According to John Styer, organizer of Christmas in the Park, a Terre Hill Days celebration, this year’s event will include the Christmas Light Trail, which will feature more than 100,000 lights, 25 new light displays, and two new scenes. “Those scenes will be a vintage Christmas (theme) and an enchanted forest (theme),” said Styer. He added that the interactive walkthrough Nativity display will be back as well. Styer and company - up to 20 volunteers - began setting up the Christmas Light Trail in the middle of October. He said it will take 100 volunteers to stage
the event, which will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, Fridays through Sundays, Dec. 6 through 8 and 13 through 15, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. each evening. The event is free to attend, but tickets are required to visit the Light Trail or take a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Tickets to those activities may be purchased at the event with cash or a credit card or online at www .terrehilldays.com on the “Christmas in the Park” page. There is no charge for children age 3 and under to participate.
Entertainment, which was a highlight of the 2023 event, will be available in two locations for the entirety of the celebration.
Live musical groups will include
the New Holland Brass Band, Holiday Horns, Nick DiSanto - the one-man band, Elvis impersonator Jeff Krick Jr., and the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble. Jazz fans may enjoy the Bailey Fulginiti Quartet, and bluegrass fans will have the chance to hear the sounds of Ironwood Drive Band. Groups of strolling carolers, including carolers from Cavod, will sing each night.
“More than a dozen local holiday craft vendors will offer a variety of holiday-themed gifts,” said Styer, who noted that the Terre Hill Area Historical Society will be on-site with a train display.
“The Choo Choo Barn will bring their mobile holiday-themed toy train display, and they will have
a Wurlitzer Band Organ at the parking area,” Styer pointed out, adding that the festive mini golf will be back, as will live ice carving. “Our new carver will (create a) Santa and a fireplace, among other holiday-themed creations,” said Styer, who added that White Oak Ice Company will provide the ice for carving.
The Terre Hill Days food pavilion will be open for the event, and a number of other vendors will be available. “We have expanded our food vendor offerings,” said Styer, who noted that in addition to the returning Castanedas Mexican, vendors offering soft pretzels, french fries, mini doughnuts, pulled pork nachos, kettle corn, and funnel cakes will be present.

When Grace Mae Bell had the idea to “merge a classic story with contemporary issues,” she had a few goals in mind. “I wanted to combine the modern-day reality of our tech-driven lives with Dickens’ timeless Christmas tale,” said Bell, who has always loved “A Christmas Carol.” “I wanted to highlight the importance of reconnecting with our loved ones and the true meaning of Christmas through the powerful medium of dance.”
Bell’s vision will come to life at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with the presentation of “The Unplugged Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The show features Aaliyah Lapp dancing the role of Eva. The Ghost of Christmas Past will be played by Naomi Grace Byers. The Ghost of Christmas Present will be played by Hannah Stoltzfoos, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will be danced by Isaac Baloche. Meghan Miller will play Carolyn, a character whose role is similar to that of Bob Cratchit in “A Christmas Carol.” In the 7 p.m. show on Dec. 7, the lead role of Eva will

“Burn calories, not your turkey” is the theme of the 33rd annual Turkey Bowl to be held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, at Tel Hai Camp & Retreat in Honey Brook. The event will feature a 5K cross-country race that will take participants through the camp and around the lake. The event will also include a 1-mile children’s fun run.
This year’s event will begin with registration and race packet pickup from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run, which is open to children age 12 and under, will begin at 9:10 a.m. Parents may run alongside their child in the fun run at no charge. The 5K race will follow at 9:40 a.m.
“We are using Second Wind Race Timing for our chip timing for our races again this year,” explained Bruce Gregory, Tel Hai Camp program director. “We continue to offer online registration, which can be accessed from the Turkey Bowl page of our website, as well as mail-in registration forms. Online registration will be open until the end of check-in on race day. Participants will need to register online before (they) arrive or when (they) arrive using (their) cell phones.”
Gregory said the event was well-attended last year.
“Last year, we had 652 total participants, up quite a bit from the last two years,” he noted. “We had 493 finishers in the 5K race and 111 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun run.”
The 5K is a 3.1-mile race that will cover a mixture of paved, gravel and grassy paths, including some hills. The kids’ fun run will stay on the main campus.
Children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. Firstplace trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups.
Gregory reported that the top overall times for the 2023 5K course were 17 minutes and 37 seconds for males and 20:53 for females.
Gregory said the race has become a popular Thanksgiving Day tradition in the area. Both local runners and outof-town visitors for the holiday participate in the event. “Besides the Honey Brook areas, I know we have runners from the Downingtown area, the Gap and Oxford areas and the New Holland area,” he stated, adding, “We are sponsored by over 15 local businesses and individuals who are listed on the Turkey Bowl page of our website.”

To modernize the story, Bell has placed Eva in a contemporary setting, where she is a corporate leader living her life at the whims of her phone. On Christmas Eve, Eva is invited to church, but chooses to focus on her work. Exhausted, she falls asleep at her desk and dreams of the three Christmas Spirits who guide her on a journey of transformation, where she must face the emptiness of her tech-driven life.
Although Bell has directed a number of productions, this is the first time she will oversee a show she wrote herself. To give dancers of all genres a chance to participate, Bell has incorporated a number of dance styles, including contemporary, ballet, lyrical, and tap. The story is told in dance, with the only dialogue provided by a narrator.
Bell’s cast of 46 features mostly teenagers, but ages range from 8 to 20.
The two acts of the show include multiple scenes, with 13 dances per act.
“One of the biggest challenges was seamlessly integrating the various dance genres while staying true to the story line,” said Bell, who added, “Opportunities for growth and creativity have ultimately made the production stronger.” She pointed out that two big ensembles involve younger children.
One is an emoji number, where dancers pop out of devices as emojis. “The emoji number is fun,” said Bell, adding that there are a few dances in the show that offer comedic relief in what is an intense story.
Bell’s cast members have been rehearsing on weekends since September. Over the weekend of Nov. 8, 9, and 10, the dancers experienced a breakthrough involving a particularly difficult dance sequence. “One of my favorite moments is when we have a challenging dance number,” said Bell, who pointed out that when cast members work together as a supportive team, they are likely to overcome the challenge.

rewarding to the cast and myself and a testament to their hard work and dedication,” she said. “That’s been fun to see the growth in the students.”
Bell hopes audiences will enjoy the combination of the holiday favorite danced in a modern setting and relate it to their own lives. “It’s a unique blend … an experience that goes beyond mere entertainment to offer a meaningful reflection on the importance of connection in today’s digital age,” stated Bell. “The dynamic dance performance combined with the powerful narrative makes a captivating and heartwarming show that I hope will resonate deeply with today’s audiences because it reflects the challenges many people face in our tech-centric world.”
