“I will give thanks to the Lord because of His righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.”

Honoring veterans

On Saturday, Dec. 14, as part of the Wreaths Across America (WAA) effort, which places wreaths on the graves of those who served in the military, 3,000 wreaths will be distributed to cemeteries in the Pequea Valley and Octorara school districts. This is the sixth year that Gap resident Paula Diem has coordinated the project, which involves Pequea Valley schools, the Gap Fire Company, and about 100 members of the area Boy and Girl Scout organizations. “This year, we are honoring the Scouts who are our feet on the ground,” said Diem. The Scouts will be honored during a special ceremony, which will be held at noon at the Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), 166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. The 30-minute ceremony will feature a speaker, wreaths presented by eight veterans, and a 21-rifle salute. Representatives of Parkesburg VFW Post 4480 will present the colors, and Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) sophomore Spencer Groff will play taps. The event is free and open to the community.

“It’s a great ceremony,” said Erik Orndorff, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent.

After the ceremony, the eight wreaths presented to honor the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, Space Force, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard, and POW/MIAs will be transported to the Gap VFW building by Dick Martin for display by the VFW auxiliary.

To distribute the wreaths to graves in 30 cemeteries, Diem contacted Orndorff and John Trovato, PVHS principal. Each year, the district sends several students to the Gap Fire Company, where the wreaths will be delivered this year by a Tyson truck at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. “(The students) help, along with the community volunteers, to unload the wreaths and arrange them by cemetery so they are prepared to be delivered,” said Diem.

“On Friday night, a team of eight volunteers mark each box of wreaths in four places,” reported Diem. On Saturday, Dec. 13, representatives of fire companies located in PVSD and Octorara School District will pick up the wreaths

and deliver them to cemeteries.

Orndorff and Trovato visit a different cemetery each year to help with the effort. This year, Diem suggested they place wreaths on the graves of Revolutionary War veterans. “We have (a total of) 100 Revolutionary War veterans (in the area), and each (grave) gets a wreath,” noted Diem.

The relationship between the Gap WAA chapter and PVSD dates back to 2019 when Diem first organized the chapter. Diem asked PVSD for help, and Orndorff and Trovato stepped up to provide. Trovato was quick to point out that two PVHS teachers have been devoted participants. “We have two facilitators - Rob Dorshimer and Tyler Espie - who help support this

really worthy cause,” said Trovato. “They feel this is an important cause, and they recruit kids they think should be part of this.”

WAA has its roots in Maine in the early 1990s. In 2005, the project began to gain national attention. Diem began her efforts in the Gap area after attending several WAA ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. “We had six months to prepare,” recalled Diem. “We started with 1,250 wreaths.”

The costs of the wreaths are covered by fundraisers and donations from local individuals and businesses.

Readers who would like to help with the local WAA effort may call 717-587-1315. More information about WAA may be found at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church, Paradise, and moderator of a group of Pequea Valley-area pastors and others in ministry that meets for lunch each month, is clear about the meaning behind holding a Christmas tree lighting event for the community. “Not everyone is going to celebrate Christmas for the same reasons we do, but there is some common grace in celebrating light over darkness and giving over receiving,” said Fisher. “This event allows us to display unity and celebrate the community.”

The third annual Paradise Community Christmas Tree Lighting will be held at the Together Community Center, which houses The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. The event will immediately follow The Factory’s Gingerbread Extravaganza, which will begin at 6 p.m. More information about the Extravaganza may be found at https://thefactoryministries.com under “Program Calendar.”

“This event, which happens on the front lawn, allows us to display unity and celebrate the community,” said Fisher, who noted the festivities will include refreshments, music,

Of Dickens and dance

When Grace Mae Bell had the idea to “merge a classic story with contemporary issues,” she had a few goals in mind. “I wanted to combine the modern-day reality of our tech-driven lives with Dickens’ timeless Christmas tale,” said Bell, who has always loved “A Christmas Carol.”“I wanted to highlight the importance of reconnecting with our loved ones and the true meaning of Christmas through the powerful medium of dance.”

Bell’s vision will come to life at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with the presentation of “The Unplugged Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The show features Aaliyah Lapp dancing the role of Eva. The Ghost of Christmas Past will be played by Naomi Grace Byers. The Ghost of Christmas Present will be played by Hannah Stoltzfoos, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will be danced by Isaac Baloche. Meghan

Miller will play Carolyn, a character whose role is similar to that of Bob Cratchit in “A Christmas Carol.” In the 7 p.m. show on Dec. 7, the lead role of Eva will be danced by understudy Araunah Boll. Tickets may be purchased by looking for “Unplugged Christmas Carol” at https://cavod .org/events. Tickets at the door will be based on availability.

To modernize the story, Bell has placed Eva in a contemporary setting, where she is a corporate leader living her life at the whims of her phone.

On Christmas Eve, Eva is invited to church, but chooses to focus on her work. Exhausted, she falls asleep at her desk and dreams of the three

from pg 3

Christmas Spirits who guide her on a journey of transformation, where she must face the emptiness of her tech-driven life.

Although Bell has directed a number of productions, this is the first time she will oversee a show she wrote herself. To give dancers of all genres a chance to participate, Bell has incorporated a number of dance styles, including contemporary, ballet, lyrical, and tap. The story is told in dance, with the only dialogue provided by a narrator.

Bell’s cast of 46 features mostly teenagers, but ages range from 8 to 20. The two acts of the show include multiple scenes, with 13 dances per act. “One of the biggest challenges was seamlessly integrating the various dance genres while staying true to the story line,” said Bell, who

added, “Opportunities for growth and creativity have ultimately made the production stronger.” She pointed out that two big ensembles involve younger children. One is an emoji number, where dancers pop out of devices as emojis. “The emoji number is fun,” said Bell, adding that there are a few dances in the show that offer comedic relief in what is an intense story.

Bell’s cast members have been rehearsing on weekends since September. Over the weekend of Nov. 8, 9, and 10, the dancers experienced a breakthrough involving a particularly difficult dance sequence. “One of my favorite moments is when we have a challenging dance number,” said

Bell, who pointed out that when cast members work together as a supportive team, they are likely to overcome the challenge. “(Those

times are) rewarding to the cast and myself and a testament to their hard work and dedication,” she said. “That’s been fun to see the growth in the students.”

This is a free event, and all children from the community are welcome to attend; however, they must be accompanied by an adult. Children will be able to visit with Santa, hear the Christmas story, make crafts, and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Bring your camera to get your own personal pictures with Santa!

At 4:45 p.m., we will have our Christmas Tree Lighting.

Bell hopes audiences will enjoy the combination of the holiday favorite danced in a modern setting and relate it to their own lives. “It’s a unique blend … an experience that goes beyond mere entertainment to offer a meaningful reflection on the importance of connection in today’s digital age,” stated Bell. “The dynamic dance performance combined with the powerful narrative makes a captivating and heartwarming show that I hope will resonate deeply with today’s audiences because it reflects the challenges many people face in our tech-centric world.”

and possibly a campfire. “There will be a short program with Christmas carols and a five-minute reflection on what unites us in our shared hope before the outdoor lights are switched on,” reported Fisher. “It’s a symbolic beginning of the season.” Attendees will also have the chance to make an ornament to be placed on an artificial tree inside The Factory.

Shira Zimmerman, senior director of adult services with The Factory, attends the monthly pastors’ luncheon. “(Zimmerman) is the point person for much of the integration between The Factory Ministry opportunities and the churches,” explained Fisher.

“A lot of (Factory clients) do Christmas alone or (aren’t connected) to a church body through-

out the year,” explained Zimmerman. “If they feel the inclination to do something church related at Christmas, they don’t know where to start.” Zimmerman noted that the tree lighting is a public event hosted by pastors. “Here’s a place to start,” she said, adding that Factory communications director Ellie Green has designed a handout with information about Christmas programs and Sunday services at local churches for attendees of the tree lighting.

Fisher stated that several area churches, including Pequea Baptist, Grace Point, Hershey Mennonite, and Leacock Presbyterian, along with Keystone and The Factory Ministries, are responsible for the event. “Other churches will be represented there, as well,” noted

Fisher, who added that the tree lighting is a good fit for the pastors’ group. “It gives us an opportunity to display our unity because there is far more in our doctrine that unites us than divides us,” explained Fisher of the churches’ willingness to participate together in a community event. SINGING SPRING FOODS

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host an event focusing on Amish and Mennonite pincushions on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. at its Collections Feature program. Mennonite Life curator Emily Immel will share research and insight into the significance of the collection.

A light reception and time for holiday shopping will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the retail area of the Collections Building. The exhibit will remain available for viewing with the purchase of a Mennonite Life Museum ticket on Friday, Dec. 6.

For generations, Amish and Mennonite women have used needlework as an outlet for artistic

expression and a way to channel creativity into the domestic sphere. The pincushions in the Mennonite Life collection are colorful, detailed, elaborately patterned works of art. The Collections Feature will explore the rich history and cultural significance of the craft.

Mennonite Life members receive complimentary admission. Those interested in general admission may reserve a ticket at www.mennonitelife.org/events.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures and histories.
