Everence Schedules Stewardship University 2020 By Ann Mead Ash
Lynette Morales, the Everence church relations representative who coordinates Stewardship University, wants Lancaster County residents to know that the yearly event is not just about money. “It is a day of holistic stewardship, said Morales, who noted that the workshops offered are designed to answer questions like: What does it mean to be a good steward of the Gospel? Or of the gifts God has given me? Stewardship University 2020 will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a time of worship, after which keynote speaker Hank Johnson of Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church will speak on “Being the Body of Christ. The opening will be followed by
more than 30 workshops divided into 12 tracks, with three workshops per track. “We have a millennials track, a mental health track, a Bible and stewardship track, family and community, 55 and older, (and more), said Morales. “This year the workshops are incredible, she added. Among this year’s workshop titles are “Missions in Your Own Backyard, “Combatting Human Trafficking, “55 and Counting, “Elevate Your Nutrition, “Kingdom Entrepreneurship, “Make Medicare an Easy Step, and “Overcoming Burnout and Disappointment. Morales pointed out that experts in specific fields will teach the workshops. “We have one called ‘Modern-Day Lepers,’ she said, noting that the workshop will focus on integrating sex offenders who have come out of incarceration into a church community. Family Fun With The Thunder By Ann Mead Ash
Lucas Morrison, age 15, is listed as the Stat Guy for the Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s basketball team playing home games at Warwick Middle School (WMS), but according to his mother, head coach Malin Morrison, he does
much more. “(Lucas) does all my promotions and statistics and everything I need on the computer, said Malin, who noted that Lucas announces games and helps out during practice. While Lucas is a busy guy, he does not think of his work with the team in terms of job duties. “It’s a lot of fun doing this, he said. “We’re not just a team. It’s kind of like a family. We are that close. The Thunder began playing in the area in the fall of 2019 See Ephrata Thunder pg 4
The Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s American Basketball Association team, plays home games at Warwick Middle School (WMS). The Thunder is both owned and coached by Malin Morrison of Manheim (center).
Phoebe Roe participated in the York County Stars pageant in 2019. This year, she plans to take part in the first Everybody Shines pageant for individuals with disabilities, organized by Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates. The event will be held at the Farm and Home Center on Feb. 16.

Resilience from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers trauma-informed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life,” stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure.” According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) demonstrated how traumatic childhood events can be the root cause of many social, emotional, and cognitive impair-
ments that contribute to an increase in high-risk health behaviors, chronic health conditions, emotional and behavioral dysfunction, and early death. Examples of ACEs are physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; and forms of household dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse childhood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are),” summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and well-being and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in students.
Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and others who are interested. In the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem,” stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a trauma-informed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how

the adult can best work with the child to address the behavior. Eshleman encourages adults to stay positive and open-minded in their interactions with others. Anyone interested in partnering with the ACT Foundation or in hosting one of the organization’s courses is welcome to contact Jeanne Dailey, director of operations, at 717-808-7134 or jeannedailey@gmail.com. ACT Foundation courses, which are all approved for Act 48 credits, include Introduction to Emotional Trauma, Trauma in the Classroom, Trauma and Sensory Processing Disorder, an interactional workshop for advanced skill building, and a two-part series on both Complex Trauma and Mindfulness. More information is available at www.aboutchildtrauma.org or on the “About Child Trauma” Facebook page. Pictured on front: Lark Eshleman serves as executive director of the About Child Trauma Foundation and is one of several professionals in the organization who is available to present Pennsylvania Department of Educationapproved Act 48 traumainformed courses that cover topics including emotional trauma, complex trauma, trauma and sensory processing disorder, and mindfulness.

Shiloh was only a few weeks old when she underwent open heart surgery to correct four congenital heart defects. Children born with critical congenital heart defects like Shiloh’s have a much greater chance to enjoy a long and healthy life than they could only a few decades ago thanks to the advanced detection and surgical interventions available today. Shiloh’s parents, Austin and Addie Moran, will share their story as part of the annual Open Your Heart appeal. The Lancaster Heart Ball will also include silent and live auctions, a special performance by American Music Theatre developed exclusively for the Heart Ball, dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in research.

Kyle Lehman, a formally trained baritone vocalist, has been the featured soloist for numerous ensembles including Laudate Mennonite Ensemble, Heart and Voice Men’s Choir, and Faith Builders Chorale. Accompanied by pianist Drew
Barnard, he will perform classical and sacred pieces. The EMS Band is a group of formally trained instrumentalists and vocalists that came together as a result of their connections with Ephrata Mennonite School. The group performs a wide array of musical genres including classical, Latin American, modern folk, and bluegrass. A ticket price has been set for adults, with free admission for children under age 12. To purchase tickets, readers may visit https://bit.ly/LMHSMusicNight or call 717-393-9745. Another workshop that Morales elaborated on will work to teach churches and families the best ways to respond to children with autism, ADHD, and developmental differences. She pointed out that one workshop will focus on the serious problem of depression and suicide among teenagers. Jazmine Rivera, administrative assistant/centennial coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), one of the sponsors of the event, attended in 2018. “I was interested in seeing financial plans and how to map myself, and my goal was to learn as much as I could,” said Rivera. “Some of the classes were really helpful and meaningful. It was really great to listen to the thoughts and ideas.” Attending the event spurred Rivera to have a few ideas of her own, which she shared with Morales. “(Rivera) said, ‘This is awesome, but where are the young people?’” recalled Morales. Not only did Rivera have suggestions for attracting millennials, she also

Other players hail from Reading, Coatesville, and Philadelphia, while some are from as far away as Florida and Michigan. According to Lucas, Thunder games have been both close and exciting. “Last night we won by one point,” he said, referring to a Jan. 4 game against the Hub City Hogs in Hagerstown, Md. “Our point guard hit a last-second buzzer beater to win the game.” The home game on Jan. 5 was not low on excitement either, with the Thunder trailing for the entire first half and rallying just before the buzzer, but the shallow bench of the opposing Philadelphia Cannons team was a weakness Malin used to her advantage. Wearing the Cannons out, the Thunder triumphed 130 to 126 at the end of the game. For more information on the Thunder, readers may visit www.ephratathunder.com.

Two of the team’s players were American, and when she played basketball against them, they suggested she play for a college team in the United States. “I got to go to Wilmington College to play basketball,” said Malin, who later transferred to the University of Delaware, eventually earning a degree in physical therapy and Jewish studies. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The professional National Basketball Association developed out of the ABA in the 1960s. Well-known players, like Julius Erving, got their starts in the league. A few of the Thunder players are from Lancaster County. “Tyler Mercer, No. 35, is from Ephrata High School, and he is our youngest player,” said Malin of the 6-foot-4-inch power forward. Guard Nasir McFadden, No. 10, played for Thaddeus Stevens, where he averaged 21 points per game. Quentin Davis,

Section Two loss to E-town last Tuesday at Elizabethtown College. by Leah Sintic
Tuesday held team losses for both boys (122-47) and girls swimming (109-61) against Elizabethtown, but several events boasted CV swimmers claiming the top spots. Karli Raasch raced her way to the front of three events, registering wins in the 200 free (2:05.07), the butterfly (1:01.58), and was joined by Asha Marwaha, Nina Kramer, and Sarah Marston for a 4:12.24 victory in the 400 free relay. CV’s Micah Leaman cruised to top honors in the 100 backstroke with his 59.44, TJ Conlin touched first in the 200 free (2:06.24), and Joshua Proch’s time of 1:02.18 gave the Buckskins another triumph in the butterfly. The Thursday before held much to celebrate, as the girls team brought home a 96-71 win over Lancaster
Catholic and honored their senior swimmers, who each made big contributions that night. Senior Sarah Marston produced a massive effort, emerging as a quadruple winner taking first in two individual events, 50 free (26.07) and 100 fly (1:01.66), as well as swimming a leg of two first-place relay teams in the 200 medley and 200 free. “Sarah has been a huge part of the CV girls wins over her four years,” pointed out head coach Barb Raasch. “She is extremely versatile and will swim wherever the team needs her.” Fellow senior Nina Kramer won the breaststroke with a season personal best time of 1:19.84, to celebrate her senior night. “Nina has dealt with many injuries over her four years but has never given up,” praised Raasch. “She is a leader during practice and meets and

is loved by her teammates.” The third CV senior, Gabby Barone, is in her first year on the varsity swim team, and jumped into the program showing great aptitude and effort that has been an immense boost to the team. “Gabby has an incredible work ethic and is willing to learn as much as she can in order to swim more events,” described Raasch. “She shows great sportsmanship and encourages all the swimmers to do their best.” All three seniors were a part of the first place 200 free relay, teaming up with sophomore Jordan Holmes, bringing in points against Lancaster Catholic with their combined time of 1:53.77. For the boys, the evening went 113-54 in favor of the Crusaders, but
once again plenty of individual achievements were on display. Josh Proch and TJ Conlin, both seniors and captains, put up personal best times in their events to make the night even more memorable. Proch’s 2:07.9 in the 200 free earned him second place and was a career best. “Josh loves to race and always wants to win,” elaborated Raasch. “He has lettered each season and has also gone to leagues every year,” she went on to say. Conlin, a transfer student, has only had one season at CV, but has still made a lasting impact, particularly in his preferred sprint freestyle events. Jumping in to help where needed, Conlin has also made contributions in the 200 IM and breaststroke events. “TJ has been a huge help to our

small team,” praised Raasch. “He keeps us all laughing during practices and meets with his wit and humor.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL Buckskin basketball picked up some additional momentum with last Tuesday’s home court victory over the Cocalico Eagles, 65-58. The seven-point success flipped the script on the Eagles, who had been the ones to prevail in the teams’ first round meeting of the season, 60-46, in early December. The Eagles held a slight advantage, 15-13, after the first period, but the improved Buckskin squad wasn’t about to surrender. They put together a particularly strong second and third quarter, outscoring Cocalico 36-25, to jump into the lead for the final period. Austin Wertz and Bradley Stoltzfus
were the evening’s high scorers, providing CV with 20 and 18 points respectively. Luke Rumbaugh supplemented the attack with an additional dozen points, all collected from beyond the arc, drawing the Eagle defense out and opening up options inside. Stoltzfus’ composure from the line was a clutch element in the win shooting 89 percent, sinking eight-ofnine attempts. “The team was focused, carried out the game plan, and played hard,” praised head coach Brad Herr, pointing out the collective 16-of-19 performance at the line and only four turnovers in the entire game. “This allowed us to maximize our possessions and play a much more efficient game.”

Art Exhibit Reception Set A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles - A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to
meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of artwork Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an
artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies. For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Community RoomonKing and choose Events.

BOWLING Robbie Jack’s 637 series led the way for CV in a 7-0 loss to Ephrata last Tuesday, the highlight of the night coming in his first game of the series, in which Jack rolled an impressive 242. A similar story played out the previous Thursday in a 7-0 loss to Cedar Crest with Jack producing an even
higher 659 series and the second highest single game of the night, 255. “They are all improving and stepping up for each other,” noted head coach Doug Davidson. “The improvement is well beyond the wins and losses of matches when we start pushing the higher average teams to bowl their best to beat us,” he added.
KDC Plans Relocation KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property. In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA executive director Hannah Smith-Brubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. Smith-Brubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16. KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

record of 3-8, leaving them with three more league showdowns in the regular season. No one had a perfect score last Thursday, but the widespread consistency of the CV marksmen paid off in a 489-488 win over Wilson. Dana Witmer’s 99 led the Buckskins to victory, with Grady Ray and Edison Stauffer hitting a pair of 98s. Madeleine King and Montana Habecker rounding out the top five with 97s. Tuesday, the CV marksmen took on Manheim Township at their home range and fell by a three-point margin, 493-490. Habecker led the CV cause with a 100, King and Ivan Shrom, put up 98s, and Wyatt Stauffer and Sierra Land provided a pair of 97s. “The CV rifle team has shown slow but steady progress,” pointed out head coach Hank Oxendine. “Several first-year shooters have improved and earned their way into the nine-person lineup.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Seemingly stuck in a series of injuries and adversity, the CV girls’ basketball team faced a loss to Cocalico last Tuesday, 56-28. Senior Savannah Byers put in nine points for the Bucks, closely followed by eight from Laela Robinson, which included her three-forfour performance from the free throw line. The Lady Bucks kept pace with the Eagles in the first half, netting their best quarter in the first with 13 points contrasted by Cocalico’s 19, but depth of the Eagles played to their favor in the subsequent periods. Four more league matchups lay ahead of the Bucks as the conclusion of the regular season rapidly approaches, eager to overcome the injuries that have plagued their roster and break their drought in league competition.

exceptional defense and hustle plays that provided his teammates with a spark off the bench,” Herr went on to say. The previous Thursday, the Bucks fell 60-50 to the Lebanon Cedars. Trailing by 14 headed into the final quarter, the Bucks made things interesting with a late game surge to gain some of those points back, outplaying the Cedars 23-19 in the final stretch, but not quite enough to make up the deficit. Stoltzfus netted 19 of the 50 CV points, and Will Stone chipped in an additional 15 in the loss. WRESTLING Continuing to make strides toward their end-of-season goals, the Buckskin grapplers brought down their latest conquest, Cocalico, last Wednesday, 37-24. Cocalico appeared to have the upper hand, holding a 21-16 advantage with only five bouts to go. Wrestling at 182 pounds, CV’s Conrad Dillman kickstarted some Buckskin momentum when his win by decision narrowed the gap to 21-19. Cocalico’s slim lead would soon be a distant memory when three-of-thefour remaining CV matmen earned falls, depositing another 18 points into CV’s total. Josue Marente (195), Leo Marente (220), and Trent Ruble (106) each pinned their opponent and swung the pendulum securely CV’s way. Earlier in the match at 145 pounds, David Dariychuk picked up an additional fall for the Bucks, giving them a total of four in the competition. The triumph marked the Buck’s fifth league victory this season, sending them into the L-L League Tournament this past weekend with an L-L record of 5-2. RIFLE A split outcome last week tacked on both a win and loss to the Buckskin

Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, will host an art exhibit featuring the work of Linda Ellen Ackley Gaston, a retired art educator and watercolorist. The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, in the Crossings Gallery in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes. Pianist Janet Eberly will provide music. In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Monday, Feb. 10. The exhibit will continue to be on display through March. Gaston earned a Bachelor of Science in art education from Penn State University and took additional art classes at Purdue University. In her younger years, she was drawn to arts and crafts. She made most of her own clothes in high school and college and made wedding dresses for her daughter and daughter-in-law. Starting out, her paintings were mostly oils until she moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1973 and connected with an accomplished watercolor teacher, Fiona Banta. Since then, watercolor has been Gaston’s main medium. Nevertheless, she experiments with many different styles, and her collection includes subject matter that is realistic, whimsical and completely abstract. In Poughkeepsie, she taught watercolor painting to children and adults in her home and other venues. In 1991, when a new art gallery opened in the Poughkeepsie area, many of the exhibiting artists were her former students. Since moving to Lancaster in 1993, she has taught at the Iris Club and at the Lancaster County Art Association, as well as teaching homeschoolers. Gaston and her husband, Charles, who are residents at Landis Homes, have four adult children, scattered from Reading to Honolulu, and four grandchildren. They also have one great-grandchild.
