Club Welcomes Applications For Bike Grants By Ann Mead Ash

“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes. LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https://lancasterbikeclub.net/ grant-program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15.

“It is a simple application process,” said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.” Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant. “I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle See Bike Grants pg 10

Power Packs - Serving And Growing By Ann Mead Ash

Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in See Power Packs pg 3

Bicyclists take part in the Covered Bridge Ride organized each August by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride raises funds that the club uses to give out grants to area organizations for bicycles, bike racks, signage, and more. Applications for this year’s grant program are due by Feb. 15.

Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director of Power Packs Project in 2018, holds a jar of peanut butter, one of many staples the program provides to area families in need. The program also provides recipes and low-cost ingredients needed to make them.

Joanne Ranck Dirks, assistant manager for the Farm & Gardens at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, is looking forward to the interactive segment of the upcoming workshop focusing on traditional seeds and Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “All of us eat food, and many of (the attendees) will be gardeners,” shared Dirks. “When we make space for discussion, everyone can join in.” The winter workshop, which will be held at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, will be broken into two parts. The 9 a.m. to noon session will include an

William Woys Weaver interactive session on seeds native to the Americas and the Three Sisters garden method. The second session, which will also take place on Feb. 23, will run from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature a lecture See Workshop pg 4

According to Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church in Paradise, parenting is not always easy, and church members would like to offer local parents a little help. “This is a way for us to come alongside parents and (offer them) resources (for) what we think is a really difficult job: to raise kids in 2019,â€? said Fisher. “It’s a different climate (than in the past).â€? With that goal in mind, Keystone will hold “Family Flight Planâ€? featuring guest speaker Jeff Reed on Sunday, Feb. 10. Reed will speak at both morning services, which will be held at 9 and 10:35 a.m., at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, and he will hold a special conference session from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. “We want to be an encouragement to parents and to acknowledge that their job with their (children can be) hard,â€? said Fisher. “We want to let them know they’re not alone in the challenges they’re facing and that we have resources ‌ to both encourage and inspire them with tools and training to direct their kids to know and love Jesus.â€? Fisher noted that parents of children from elementary age through high school could benefit from the workshop as could grandparents. In fact, even though the title is “Family Flight Plan,â€? Fisher said that anyone in leadership may gain helpful information from Reed’s teaching. Reed is a Lifeway representative who Pictured on front: Jeff Reed

“Hearts For Lancaster Fundraiser Set The third annual “Hearts for Lancaster Valentine’s Day fundraiser, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square, is slated to kick off. Individuals may order large personalized red hearts to be suspended from the lamp posts in the downtown Lancaster area. In addition, individuals may express their affection for their furry friends, as dog bones, hearts, and dog silhouettes may be ordered and will be hung on the fence in front of Binns Park. The items will be hung on Saturday, Feb. 2, and remain for two weeks. The fundraising effort is authorized by the City of Lancaster and supports the mission of Rotary International. Proceeds will sustain the community

projects, grants, and gifts sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square. In past years, the proceeds from the sale of hearts have allowed the Penn Square Rotary Club to purchase two new bicycles and radio equipment for the Lancaster City Alliance’s Bike Ambassadors, equipment for Arbor Place and North Star Initiative’s Harbor House, scholarships for Music for Everyone, and sewer guards for some of the sewer grates in Lancaster. To order a heart, readers may visit www.lancpennsquarerotary.org. To learn more about the club, readers are invited to join a club gathering on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Federal Taphouse, 201 N. Queen St., Lancaster.

has developed a relationship with Keystone. He has served in full-time ministry for more than 20 years. His past titles have included student pastor, worship pastor, children’s pastor, executive pastor, senior pastor, and family pastor. “(Reed) has a rich background in helping to equip parents to raise up children in biblical ways, said Fisher, who noted that Reed has shared his abilities in training with Keystone at a past parenting conference. According to Fisher, the “Family Flight Plan title relates to the illustration Reed will use in teaching the workshop. “(Reed will use that analogy) to give parents a vision of what they need to do for a (child) to take off before leaving the nest, explained Fisher. “Our goal is to send them off where they are able to fly on their own, (including) what we might want to do to prepare them for the day that they flap their wings and soar. Lauren Smoker, communication coordinator for Keystone, added that Reed’s illustration depicts the parents as watching from the tower. “(The parents) can see the bigger picture in directing (their children) for takeoff, Smoker explained. The evening conference will include light refreshments, table talk and discussion time, and a question-and-answer period. There will also be a special activity for all children up to and through fourth grade. There is no cost to hear Reed speak, but those who plan to attend the 6 p.m. workshop are asked to register at www.keystonechurch.org/family or by calling 717-768-7213.

most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We

need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-at-Home Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacksproject.org.

AHA Sets National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. Individuals are encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive. In 2004, the AHA created Go Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. on the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and its influence on the distinctive cuisine associated with this ethnic group. Both sessions will be presented by William Woys Weaver, an internationally known food historian, who makes his home in Devon. He is the author of a number of cookbooks, including the award-winning “Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking.” According to Dirks,

Weaver has donated seeds to the Landis Valley heirloom seed program. She shared that Weaver became interested in seeds when he discovered that his grandfather, an avid gardener, had been working to preserve seeds from traditional plants. “(Weaver) committed to growing (the seeds) and keeping them growing,” said Dirks, who added that heirloom seeds must be grown to keep the species alive.

“When you talk about seed preservation, it means growing them in the garden on a rotating basis,” she explained. The morning session of the upcoming workshop will be divided into three parts. Part one will explore the impact of Native American seeds. “It’s amazing how many have origins in South and Central America,” said Dirks. “(The seeds) migrated north with the Native American peoples.” The workshop will include time for round table discussion and a presentation on Three Sisters gardening, which focuses on growing corn, beans, and squash. Dirks said that the practice originated in South America. “(Three Sisters gardening) is a Native American term and a practice the early settlers would have learned from their Native American neighbors, and it still works,” she explained. During the afternoon workshop, Weaver will delve into the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and the foods that this type of garden brought to the tables of different regions of Pennsylvania. The four-part session will begin with the seeds the immigrants brought with them. “Some of those seeds had also come from South America,” said Dirks, explaining that Spanish and Italian explorers brought seeds back to their homelands and that those seeds moved north through Europe

and then returned to America with Pennsylvania settlers. Another segment of the afternoon presentation will focus on the foods that are traditional among Pennsylvania Dutch families. “(The kitchen garden) was the woman’s garden close to the kitchen,” said Dirks, who noted that foursquare gardens usually contained carrots, bush beans, and pole beans, with a border of medicinal herbs, along with cooking herbs. Potatoes, cabbages, and onions that were used in bulk were grown in large fields. According to Dirks, Weaver will also spend time discussing the distinctions between types of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. “In the third part (of the afternoon session, Weaver) will talk about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and how it’s not all the same,” said Dirks. “There are (foods) our grandparents and great grandparents cooked, that we don’t cook so much,” she added, noting that schnitz un knepp, a dish made with ham, apples, and dumplings, is not cooked as often as it once was. There is a cost to attend each workshop. The long-held tradition of the annual mid-winter meeting of area beef cattle producers will celebrate its 50-year milestone at the upcoming Lancaster Cattle Feeders Day on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We as organizers wanted to mark this special event with a range of speakers who will ... educate producers on ways to improve their operation (and) also for participants to see how the beef cattle business has grown and changed in 50 years, as well as get a fresh perspective on the future of the industry,” said Cheryl Fairbairn, Penn State animal science educator. The day will begin with a recollection of the past 50 years of Lancaster Cattle Feeders Day and the Lancaster Stockyards by Chet Hughes, former Lancaster County livestock agent. The history of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association (VCA) and its part in the history of Lancaster County’s beef industry will be reviewed by Reggie Reynolds, member of the VCA board of directors. Next, Dr. Sara Place, senior director of sustainable beef production research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), will discuss beef sustainability in her presentation “Beyond the Headlines and Toward the Facts.” Later, Dr. Tara Felix will give an update on Penn State’s Calf-Fed Project and talk about feed efficiency tools. The meeting will also serve as Beef Quality Assurance recertification for attendees who need to update their certificates. first came to America as an exchange student,” McCritty said. “Africans celebrate the happiness and sadness of life with dance and rhythms - suffering but still smiling. My work reflects the experience of my transitions, reflecting my West African roots and the rhythm of my life in Lancaster. These two rhythms are deeply connected to me.” McCritty uses mixed media and found objects as she seeks to reveal the emotions of happiness, sadness, and discomfort, along with the notion of elegance, dignity, pride, and passion. “The materials that connect with my creations are ones like metal, wood, and cardboard that reflect everyday life. Where someone else might throw them away, I incorporate them into works of art,” she commented. Music groups both large and small will be showcased when the We the People First Friday series presents “Lancaster Gospel Roots” on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Scheduled performers include the Gospel Sounds of Lancaster featuring Soul House vocalist Amy Shaffer, the Anthony Pieruccini Jazz Trio, Ray’s Temple Church of God in Christ Choir, Fairview Full Gospel Church, spoken word artist David Barton, and the Cielos Abierto Dance Troupe. The evening will end with the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. The concert has its roots in a program that has historically been organized by Barton. This year, the Ware Center has taken on the role of producing the show. Barton is still involved with the planning, and many of the groups have appeared in the event previously. “The big addition would be the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. At 60 to 70 voices strong, they will be a great addition to the lineup and a rousing way to end the evening,” said Ware Center arts communication manager Amy Banks. “We really wanted to represent gospel music through different communities here in the city, and as a result, we will have a diverse mix of music, dance, and spoken word.” Banks noted that nearly all of the performers are from Lancaster, but Fairview Full Gospel Church is from York. While gospel music is religious and spiritual in nature, Banks said that she considers the First Friday concert a secular event where attendees might have a personal experience of the Spirit through performing arts. “My hope would be that attendees will have an uplifting and joyous experience,” she remarked. Additionally, a reception for the art exhibit “Head Series” by Gerry McCritty will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on First Friday in the Ware Center’s Regitz Gallery. The exhibit will run from Feb. 1 through Friday, Feb. 22. McCritty has been painting and sculpting for more than 30 years. She described the nature of her visual artistry as earthly and rhythmic, and she aims to bring out emotions felt globally in today’s world. “I was born in Liberia, West Africa, and

CV’s Boys” Swimmers Top Ephrata, Now 5-0 by Leah Sintic

The boys’ swim team dove into last week with a perfect league record, facing a match against Ephrata on Tuesday, and emerged with that record still intact, now boasting a 5-0 run in L-L League meets. Leading the Section Two pack, the Buckskins raced to a 90-74 win over Ephrata, leaving just one more league match on the schedule before playoffs. “The boys are really excited to be in the hunt for the Section title,” acknowledged head coach Barb Raasch. “I think it’s adding lots of positive energy, and rather than pressure, they’re looking at it as an adrenaline rush.” That adrenaline propelled the Bucks to six first place touches in the individual events against the Mountaineers, raking in the points needed for the win. Nick Lynam topped two categories taking the 100 free in 49.73 and the 200 free in 1:46.48. Robbie Krasinski’s 24.07 was the quickest time in the 50 free, and Micah Leaman claimed the 500 in 5:09.47. Scooping up victories in two more categories was Auden Block’s 58.79 backstroke and Sheldon Hertzler’s breaststroke win in 1:07.57. Lynam, Leaman, Block, and Krasinski teamed up for the team’s one relay triumph, combining for a 1:48.12 in the 200 medley. For the girls, the meet resulted in a 103-64 loss to the Mountaineers, but the CV squad still managed to collect four top individual times as well as two relay victories.

Sophomore Karli Raasch had a big night, pulling in two individual wins, 200 free (2:02.16) and breaststroke (1:12.5), as well as contributing to both CV relay wins. Jordan Holmes, Laurel Tuckey, and Lauren Nedrow joined Raasch in the 200 free relay, combining for a 1:50.04; followed by the combo of Sarah Marston, Nedrow, Tuckey, and Raasch to claim the 400 free in 4:02.85. Marston also added a top time in the 200 IM (2:20.14), and Nedrow touched first in the butterfly (1:08.82). WRESTLING Last Wednesday the Bucks hosted the seventh, and final regular season league competition-which also happened to be the last obstacle standing between CV and the 2018-2019 L-L Section One season title. Becoming section champs was an achievement the squad set out to reach togetherand that’s exactly what they did, overcoming Cocalico by a margin of 58-10, the perfect cap to the league portion of the regular season. The Bucks headed into Wednesday’s showdown against Cocalico with a stellar 6-0 record behind them, a passionate coaching staff leading them, and an enthusiastic home crowd supporting them-all combining for a near perfect night in Witmer. “It is very rewarding to have won the Section One title outright this year,” celebrated head coach Trent Turner. The last time CV topped the ranks as regular season champs was in the 2016-2017 season, and they had to

share the podium with co-champs Penn Manor and Cocalico in a threeway tie, but this time, the Buckskins’ flawless 7-0 record was unmatched. “It’s a great feeling to have sole possession of this one. The team made it a goal and worked hard to accomplish it together,” Turner added. Fittingly, the last two obstacles that the Buckskins had to overcome were the very two opponents they shared the title with two years ago. Two weeks ago, the Bucks took down Penn Manor by a count of 40-31 to remain the only undefeated Section One team, but the job wasn’t complete until they had also conquered Cocalico. Pumped with adrenaline and backed by their home crowd, the CV matmen racked up 34 unanswered points in the first seven bouts of the contest. Rafael Rodriguez at 120 started the night with a fall, and points awarded by decision flooded in from Cameron Kistler (126), Austin Rider (138), David Dariychuk (145), Isiah Gantt (182), and Leo Marente (220). Andrew Dariychuk (132) earned a technical fall and Josh MacNamara (160) pinned his opponent in 4:33. “The keys to our success have been an experience squad, good team leadership, and a buy-in by our wrestlers to our team core covenant centered around the principles of Brotherhood, Hardwork, Heart, and Respect,” noted Turner. “This has helped to provide direction for our team and has helped to

keep our attention on what is ultimately most important.” With so much to celebrate, it was the perfect evening to honor the contributions of the senior grapplers, and recognize their role in such a phenomenal season. “Our senior class provided excellent leadership and experience, which was a very key component to our section title run. I’m very happy for them,” summarized Turner. RIFLE Regrouping after an early week loss, the CV marksman fired back in their second contest of last week to pick up their seventh league win. Thursday, the squad hosted Wilson and a pair of 100s supplied by Madeleine King and Alex Stoudt led the team to a 492-488 triumph. Though not their best collective performance of the season, Chase Miller’s 98, along with a pair of 97s from Montana Habecker and Garret Yoder proved to be enough to top Wilson. The club took a step back in a 498-492 loss to at Manheim Township on the prior Tuesday. With three of the Blue Streaks’ marksman hitting 100s, the showdown went comfortably in favor of Township. Providing a highlight for CV was Darren McGallicher who hit a perfect 100, but the remaining scores were not enough to erase the deficit. With only three league matches remaining in the regular season schedule,

Coach Oxendine took a moment to reflect on the contributions supplied by the squads seven seniors. JJ Benedict, Lexus Henkel, Darren McGallicher, Chase Miller, Kyle Morgan, Alex Stoudt, and Garret Yoder will each be graduating this spring. Their presence will be missed, but they leave behind a legacy of hard work and commitment. “The current senior class has experienced more wins since entering the program than any other senior class I have coached,” pointed out Oxendine. “They have laid the foundation for future success, and have been extremely instrumental to the current success of the program.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL In a tough, compacted schedule, made even more difficult when battling injuries, the Bucks fell to three competitors last week; Lebanon (49-33), LampeterStrasburg (51-39), and Cocalico (62-29). Parker Graff continues to step into a leadership role for the Bucks, heading up the offense with eight points against both Lebanon and Cocalico. Against Lampeter-Strasburg, Ethan Bredeman and Joe Cardina stepped up to shoulder the bulk of CV’s points with 13 and 11 respectively. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL A tumultuous week ultimately shook down to a pair of nonleague

PENNYSAVER losses and an exciting league win for the Lady Bucks, with four league contests remaining in their regular season schedule. Tuesday’s heartbreaking loss to Cocalico, 43-42, came down to the buzzer,

and tipped in favor of Cocalico with an Eagle bucket with only two seconds remaining on the clock. With most of the game displaying a one-possession scoreboard differential, CV held a slight edge, 35-31, rounding the corner into the final frame. Unfortunately, Cocalico posted their best run in the fourth, outscoring the Bucks 12-7 and coming up with the one-point advantage just seconds before time expired. Kenzie Reed had another phenomenal offensive effort for the Lady Bucks, netting a game-high 22 points. Sydney Bouder and Savannah Byers provided scoring support with seven and six points respectively. In back-to-back games the previous weekend, the Lady Bucks experienced split results, taking down Lebanon by a score of 63-35, and falling to Lampeter-Strasburg, 51-25. In the triumph over the Cedars, it was once again Reed stepping up to lead led all scorers, this time with a

monstrous 30-point contribution. The Lady Bucks, went ahead from the get-go, tallying a 16-5 first quarter and never relinquishing their hold on the contest. Outshooting the Cedars 26-9 in overall field goals, the Lady Bucks extended their advantage with a strong showing at the line, succeeding in 11-of-18 free throw attempts. Bouder led the team in free throws, going six-of-eight, to gather the majority of her eight total points, and Byers knocked in four field goals to match Boulder’s point count. Seven different players contributed to the 63-point accumulation, with Lauren Thrush netting six, Jeriyah Johnson providing five, Laela Robinson four, and a field goal from Ashley Andrew. With a current league record of 2-7, the Lady Bucks look to make a push in the final stretch of four league matches to improve their section standings and keep playoff hopes alive

Bike Grants from pg 1 racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety. Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail. In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants. It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride.

Anchor Christian Academy students recently completed extensive Winter Term Projects. Students chose a topic that piqued their interest and worked under the guidance of a teacher in the appropriate subject area. The projects were presented during a recent Winter Term Project Night. Students were challenged to research their topic in detail in order to give an oral presentation as well as produce a written paper and visual aid to demonstrate what

they learned. The research project gave students the opportunity to grow in knowledge and to experience the process of researching, gathering pertinent information, producing a paper, constructing a visual aid, and being versed enough in the chosen subject matter to present to the public. Some of topics included knife forging, cheese making, sewing a historically accurate dress from the 1800s, creating a new language, the history of sailing ships, interior design and room makeovers, raising

broiler chickens, the creation of economic systems, the production of vinyl records, quilt making, comparing sneakers, improving running times, and visiting orphanages in Peru. To learn more about Anchor Christian Academy, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, readers may visit one of several open houses, slated for Thursday, Feb. 7; Tuesday, March 12; Monday, April 8; and Monday, May 6. Registration is available at www.AnchorChristianAcademy.org.
