Members of Aaron’s Acres staff recently accepted an award presented in memory of Steven Killough.

The financial award in Killough’s name will be used for music therapy at Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp in June. “He was a musician and we thought this was the best use of the money,” said Paskoff. “We

get all types of different awards, and we get grants. Every little bit goes toward our programs. We don’t spend a lot of money on administrative costs. This is a very generous grant for us to have. The music therapy is pretty much covered.” Aaron’s Acres relies heavily on donations to fund its work. “We’re funded through a variety of ways,” said Paskoff. “We do major fundraisers throughout the year, and we have very generous donors. Parents don’t pay if they can’t afford it. We accept everyone, from (age) 5 to 21, with a variety of disabilities. We’ve never turned away a child if they couldn’t afford it or if they had a disability. We try to make it as easy as possible for the families. We have professionals in supervisory roles, which gives our parents a chance to breathe.” About 40 kids and young adults with disabilities are currently being served by Aaron’s Acres’ school year program. I use that mission and carry it back to my building. We’re learning together. My role is to take their vision and mission and pass that on to my staff and the Conestoga Valley community.” “We need to make sure we’re See Matt Fox pg 3

Nonprofits sought for PCA&D Designathon Central Pennsylvania nonprofits are encouraged to apply to participate in Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s 16th annual Designathon event, which provides branding and design work for free in a 12-hour marathon of creativity. The event is scheduled this year for Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Held by the college’s student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and headed by graphic arts department chair Maria Hostetter, the event benefits both area nonprofit organizations and the students who volunteer their time and talents. Organizations leave the event with a portfolio of professional-quality design elements, while students gain real-world experience in creating projects for clients with a

Art studio sets February exhibit For five years, Mulberry Ar t Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, brightened the dreary winter months with art from its private collection, featuring love themed works in February in a gallery staple exhibit, “Art In Love.” The show paused after 2020, as the gallery worked to navigate art in the public space during a pandemic. This winter, Mulberry Art Studios will bring the exhibition back, and it will feature works from the private collection of April M. Koppenhaver, owner and founder of Mulberry Art Studios. “Art in Love, Again” will open with a First Friday reception on Feb. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. and will be on display throughout the month of February. The Lancaster County Office of Aging has posted tips to help prevent falls during the winter months. People are advised to wear sho es w ith go o d traction. They should also dress warmly to keep their muscles relaxed, as tense muscles can adversely affect balance. Technique is important when getting out of a vehicle. People should begin by planting both feet firmly on the ground and then steadying themselves on the door frame until they have gotten their balance. T he O ff ice o f A g ing advises people to avoid shor tcuts and stay on cleared sidewalks and paths even though it may take longer. Grassy areas and slopes can be slippery like snowy steps. People should take extra time and avoid rushing. They should take short s te p s w i t h t h e i r to e s pointed slightly outward to maintain a stable support base. They should pay attention to the surfaces ahead of them and look down with their eyes only, as moving the head downward may shift a person’s balance.
