Hartz Physical Therapy Creates Charitable Arm BY ANN MEAD ASH

At the end of 2020, HARTZ Physical Therapy, with five locations in Lancaster County, formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Fund. The mission for the new organization is “to strengthen our community through philanthropic support for essential charitable organizations in Lancaster County.”

Pack 82 visited the West Earl Police (top left photo). Venture Crew 82 also navigated a 50-mile canoe trip from Selinsgrove to Harrisburg (bottom left photo) and took part in a simulated river rescue during 2020.

Brownstown Youths Scout On OVID-19 restrictions have put a damper on many group activities. However, Brownstown’s Boy Scouts of America Pack 82, Troop 82, and Crew 82 refused to give up their actitivies entirely. Instead, the group found safe ways to stay active during 2020. “‘Scout On’ has been an informal charge for us,” said Erin Blank, Scoutmaster of Scouts BSA Troop 82. “Now we are reaping the benefits of doing exactly that, and our kids are leading the way through these tough times. This could not happen without the invested support and enthusiasm from all of our participating families.” Weekly Zoom meetings for both the pack and the troop kept the Scouts in touch. The pack also met monthly at West Earl Lions Park, and the Crew holds two Zoom meetings per month. “Pack 82 worked with chartering organization West Earl Lions to secure new facilities in the local area to continue to meet together,” said

Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Bart Eckhardt had the idea to have Scouts earn an Emergency Preparation Merit Badge during COVID. On a foggy day in December 2020, nine young women ages 11 through 17 performed a Conestoga River rescue drill using a 200-pound safety dummy. They extracted the body from the water and practiced a number of emergency scenarios. “It became (important) to look at how we handle the unknowns in our lives,” recalled Blank. “Our three older Scouts - a lifeguard, an EMT, and a Scout camp leader - stepped in to mentor the younger Scouts through the process, while adult leaders worked as dispatch responders, bystanders, and helpful observers,” said Blank. Pack 82 went from 13 members to 32 youths in a very short time and is always welcoming more. Readers who would like more information on the group may visit https://BSA82.org or email Scoutmaster@BSA82.org.

Building For The Future LCHS Plans Remodel And Expansion BY ANN MEAD ASH

As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer.

Blank. During the summer, a COVID safety policy was adopted to allow Scouts to hold in-person activities. This resulted in meeting at the West Earl Township Municipal Building for a brief time. In summer, when Lancaster County went into the green zone, an Arrow of Light ceremony for seven Cubs and Courts of Honor for 20 Scouts and 12 Venturers were held. Additional activities included a visit to the West Earl Police and a campout in West Earl Lions Club Park for about a half dozen Cub families. The troop took several camping trips to places like Susquehannock State Park and Gettysburg’s Daniel Lady Farm. Venture Crew 82 also navigated a 50-mile canoe trip from Selinsgrove to Harrisburg, camping on islands along the way. In November 2020, the Cubs and Scouts worked to collect more than 10,000 pounds of food for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and a New Holland area food pantry as part of Scouting for Food.

That goal provides only a glimpse into the HARTZ story, which began more than 20 years ago when Brian Hartz, a Lititz native, and his wife, Amy, originally from Mechanicsburg, met while attending Rider University in New Jersey. Vintage Revival Spring Fever Market Slated Debbie Luther, market facilitator for the Vintage Revival Market, recently recalled the origins of the gathering. “A group of ladies used to meet in a Walmart parking lot to share vintage items found at yard sales and auctions,” said Luther, adding that she thinks those meetups began around 2012. Eventually the group began holding markets at an Akron church, and the event was held at that location for some time. Eventually, the group members became too busy to continue to run the market. Luther, who had been a vendor at the market with her own Dazzling Daisy Designs jewelry, became the facilitator, moving the market gatherings to a space in the Shops at Rockvale that once housed West Elm Outlet. The next Vintage Revival Market will be held at Suite 1079, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public, and it will feature more than 50 vendors, live music, food trucks, and giveaways. Among the many vendors will be

choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with selfesteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,”

Carrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows

participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. Both teams were hot from beyond the arc, which is where Rumbaugh amassed the bulk of his points, draining five three-pointers. The Bucks collected a grand total of 21 points from three-point range, with two additional treys Photo by Bob Devonshire coming from Austen The Buckskins’ Kyle Thrush fights through Wertz (nine points) and a pick by Ephrata’s Robert Campbell dur- Cooper McCloud (five ing Conestoga Valley’s 55-51 victory over points), proving themthe host Mountaineers on February 5. selves to be a serious longdistance threat, but the Cedars responded with six of their own, and held the edge on the inside game. Lebanon capitalized on 14 trips to the free throw line, making eight, while the Bucks only visited the line three times, converting two. On February 5th, CV outscored the Ephrata Mountaineers 55-52 to grab a win on the road. The opening of the Photo by Bob Devonshire Friday night clash Cameron Swinton drives past Moun- belonged to the Mountaineer defender Andre Weidman in CV’s taineers, who jumped 55-51, Section Two victory in Ephrata on ahead 13-9 after the first February 5. period, but a 15-8 CV run

in the second demonstrated the Bucks had the ability to make pivotal adjustments. The halftime scoreboard read 2421, giving CV a three-point advantage, and that slim lead turned out to be the exact difference in the final score. The Bucks and Mountaineers matched each other point-for-point in a 17-17 third quarter and then mirrored each other again with a 14-14 fourth quarter. “Both teams competed hard and had scoring runs to keep the game interesting,” noted coach Jim Shipper who made a few halftime tweaks to the CV offense. “We had a few new wrinkles within our offense, and I was happy to see the boys execute those plays.” A team-focused mentality is a big part of Shipper’s coaching strategy, and the successful implementation of that emphasis showcased eight players contributing to the scoring, with three in double digits. Rumbaugh led all scorers with 17 and was balanced by 15 from Austin Wertz. Titus York was CV’s third player in double digits, coming alive in the second half where he netted 10 of his 12 points. “I felt the half-court offense was more consistent tonight. We did a better job finishing around the rim,” the coach went on to say. The Bucks currently hold an overall record of 5-6 (3-5 league), and hope the coming weeks provide plenty of opportunity for continued growth. “The key to our success is, and will always be, accepting our role and contributing within our role,” concluded Shipper. “We must play as a team and defend as a team. When we do that, we give ourselves a chance to win every night.” WRESTLING With the post-season rapidly approaching, the Buckskin grapplers flexed their muscles at a quad

match held at Conestoga Valley on February 6th, going a collective 2-1 with wins over Central Dauphin East (47-12) and Dover Area (48-30), and a 41-30 loss to Exeter Township High School. CV freshman Luke Morley continues to step up for the Bucks and earned a fall in his 113-pound match against CD East, and Keaton Fischer (138) and Robby Swift (160) each produced a technical fall. Rey Ortiz (120) and Macoy Kneisley (152) pulled in additional CV points by decision in the landslide win. Against Dover, CV had to work their way out of an early 18-6 deficit, but flipped the script to end up with a 48-30 success. Keaton Fischer kicked off a massive momentum shift with his fall in the 138-pound bout. In the subsequent seven bouts, CV added four more falls, with Luke Needham (145), Kneisley (152), Nate Kirchner (172), and Josue Marente (215) each pinning their opponent. Exeter Township pumped the brakes on CV, earning a full sweep for the day, defeating the Bucks 4130, but Fischer, Needham, Marente, and Morley each picked up another fall in loss. “After starting the season 1-3, the team has won six of its last seven dual meets and secured another winning record,” praised coach Trent Turner. This season’s 7-4 dual meet record marks the 12th consecutive season the Buckskins have finished in the positive. After one last dual anticipated against Daniel Boone, the Bucks will then turn their attention to the League Championships slated for February 13. SWIMMING As was too often the story in 20-21 winter seasons, the CV swim club was plagued by sickness and quarantines, leaving them short on opportunities and athletes they might have hoped would fill the lanes and top the podi-

ums at the LL League Championships held at Wilson High School on February 5th and 6th. Despite the absences and disappointments, CV senior Micah Leaman powered ahead to earn a pair of medals in the championship event. Leaman’s success came in the 500 free where the senior touched in second place with a time of 4:56.14 as well as a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:01.51). Jordan Holmes finished just short of the medal rankings with her ninth-place finish in the backstroke (1:03.43) and also supplied a 12th in the 50 free (26.33). Daniel Ivanchikov also had a ninth-place finish, his coming in the butterfly (59.79), which he paired with a backstroke performance of 1:01.27 for 15th. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Laela Robinson produced a massive effort in CV’s recent trip to Lebanon, netting 22 points but the Lady Bucks ultimately fell 63-45 to the Cedars. Robinson extended the Cedars defense with her outside shooting, knocking in six three-pointers in her season-high, but the storyline tipped in favor of the Lady Cedars who made headway at the line netting 14-of-25 in free throws to edge away in the final quarter. The night before, while hosting Warwick, the Buckskins fell 54-32. This time Taylor Hehnly paced the CV offense with 11 points, and

Yazmeen Norris chipped in another seven. The two setbacks bring the Lady Bucks total game count to four and levels their record at 2-2, as Covid related postponements have wreaked havoc on the squad’s schedule. With hopes that February will hold much more opportunity and success, the team will attempt to fit in at least six more section games before the League season deadline, February 22.

GOTR from pg 3 explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games - that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “We need our coaches to lead now more than ever.” West agreed. “(The girls) need the social interaction

with friends in a safe environment, and that’s what GOTR is,” she said. “GOTR is a safe space where girls can gather and truly belong,” Johnson stated. Registration for the spring season will open on Monday, March 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 29. Readers who wish to register a girl or volunteer may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Individuals with questions may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

GOAL Project Plans Workshop

HARTZ Physical Therapy from pg 1

www.gordonvillefc.com

GORDONVILLE FIRE CO. ANNUAL SPRING

AUCTION

In addition to the Fall Blast, HARTZ has partnered with Water Street Mission (WSM) and matched employee contributions to the Lancaster County Foundation Extraordinary Give, in addition to other fundraisers. According to Amy, one idea behind founding the organization was to consolidate efforts. “The 501(c)(3) is to bring all our community engagement ideas under one umbrella,” she said, noting that it is important to be able to support charities that staff members feel passionate about. “This (helps) us to support the community in a way we weren’t previously able to do with a piecemeal approach,” Amy said. “Often with smaller Lancaster County-based charities, they don’t have a fundraising (arm),” said Enck, who added that the practice has developed relationships with many of those organizations. “Now we can grow that,” she added. “It’s exciting (to have a 501(c)(3)). It is a whole new chapter.” Readers who would like to know more about the fund may visit www.hartzpt.com.

One employee who was inspired was physical therapy assistant Wendy Enck, who has been with the practice for 19 years. Enck recalled how Brian would encourage employees to participate in area 5K running events. “The more (5Ks) we did, we thought, ‘We could hold this ourselves,’” said Enck, who researched how to organize a 5K and then became the race director for the first HARTZ Physical Therapy Fall Blast held at John Bonfield Elementary School in the fall of 2004. “The course is great for beginners,” said Enck. “It’s not very hilly.” In the years since the first 5K was held, the run has raised more than $240,000 for local charities. Local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Girls on the Run, and Power Packs Project. Brian noted that organizations that benefit from the Fall Blast are chosen based on applications received from the charities. “We narrow it down to three (applicants), and then we present those to our entire staff (for a vote),” said Brian. “Amy and I don’t make these decisions. Our entire staff is engaged.”

The Giant Company recently announced it has joined the GreenChill program, a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership with food retailers, refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their environmental impacts. As a program partner, GreenChill provides the Giant Company and other industry stakeholders with information and assistance to transition to environmentally-friendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant they use, eliminate refrigerant leaks, implement environmental best practices and adopt green refrigeration technologies. There are more

than 12,500 GreenChill partner stores throughout the country. The Giant Company is currently performing refrigerant conversions, installing leak detectors and replacing older refrigeration units when possible within its nearly 190 stores. For more information on the EPA’s GreenChill Program, readers may visit www.epa.gov/greenchill. The Giant Company also announced that it has been awarded the 2020 Gold Plate Award by the FMI Foundation in the COVID-19 Heroes category. This category, which is new to the annual awards program, recognizes charitable programs that help families share meals together during the pandemic.

The Giant Company accepted its 2020 Gold Plate Award for its program “The Giant Company Is for Today’s Table” during National Family Meals Month at the virtual FMI Midwinter Executive Conference on Jan. 26. This is the second Gold Plate Award for the Giant Company; it was recognized in 2018 for its “Power of One More Family Meal” campaign. During National Family Meals Month last September, the Giant Company launched its For Today’s Table brand platform, which included refreshed uniforms and store décor, merchandising innovations and more. Customers were encouraged to share photos of their family connecting over a meal on social media

using #ForTodaysTable during the month. For every photo shared, the Giant Company donated the cash equivalent to provide 100 meals to neighbors in need. In addition, ads were developed featuring real families with footage of their daily lives, including mealtime, for television and radio spots. The Giant Company distributed red tables, benches and picnic blankets throughout the community and to area food banks. On Sept. 26, 2020, National Family Day, the first 100 customers in stores also received a picnic blanket. The Giant Company rewarded its own team members, as well, providing $100 in Grocery Dollars to each of its 35,000 team members.
