LMS students to present what they’ve learned about Charlie Brown
T
he singing accentuates the acting, and the dancing accentuates the singing. In theatrical circles, musical performers are known as triple threats due to their ability to act, sing and dance. Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) is enlisting the talents of about a half-dozen triple threats to pull off the production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” “Musical theater is really a heightened art form,” said K atelyn Cor yell, L ancaster Mennonite’s first-year director. “Singing happens when words aren’t enough for the depth of the moment, and dancing happens when singing isn’t enough for the depth of the moment. A musical definitely takes a different approach than a play. I find musicals to be super, super fun just because they’re larger than life.”
LMS will present “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” as its winter musical on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22, 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. The performance will be staged within the confines of the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. “It’s set in a day of the life of Charlie Brown, and it’s like watching a singing and dancing comic strip,” said Coryell. “When Charles Schulz wrote the comic strip in the 1950s, he did not intend it to just reach children. With approved credit, He had the kids as the central SPECIAL FINANCING for up to 12 SPECIAL MONTHS FINANCING see store for details. for up to 12 M characters talking about issues FEBRUARY 15th - FEBRUARY 26th FEBRUARY 15th - FEBRU that face adults. It explores and emphasizes the importance of human touch and human interaction. But what Bonnie Keller has discovered about baby cuddling is that it can be a symbiotic relationship. Yes, baby cuddling is a real thing, and it’s as heartwarming as it sounds. A resident of Manheim Township and a retired private adoption agency director, Keller performs her fascinating volunteer work in the neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU) of Women & Babies Hospital, 690 Good Drive, Lancaster. “Most of them are little wee ones,” said Keller of the babies she snuggles. “The littlest people you’ve ever seen, and they need help to grow. It’s very comforting to see them grow every week. It’s very satisfying seeing the flower open up.” Keller is one of 60 volunteers who cuddle babies inside Women & Babies’ NICU - 52 women and eight men from all

the tables. “I think the atmosphere is the thing people like,” said Sensenig. All proceeds from the supper will go to Align Life Ministries. Salem Hellers is hoping to serve 155 to 175 lasagna dinners, a total that would raise between $1,500 and $2,000 for the cause. “We probably support 24 different ministries, locally and overseas,” said Sensenig. “This year we thought Align would be a good one because it’s in the forefront of people’s minds, because it’s so much in the news.” Known locally as “The Church on the Hill,” Salem E v a n g e l i c a l R e fo r m e d Church, Hellers has roots in Germany and Switzerland and was founded in 1729, a year before the city of Lancaster was established. The church characterizes its mission with three G’s - “Glorify God, Grow in the Spirit and Go into the World with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” “We used to go on adult mission trips,” said Sensenig. “We always had a bazaar in the fall and the lasagna dinners to pay for them. Most of us are older now and we don’t go anywhere. We started to give the money we raised to the ministries we support.” For additional information about Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, go to www.salemhellers.com. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

us,” said Maggie Sensenig, Salem Hellers’ missions chairperson, of the up to 24 volunteers who help serve the dinner. “We’re growing by opening ourselves to the community. Hopefully people will see us, and it will help the community grow. We’re passing on the profits. When people come here, they have a feeling of joyfulness and happiness. They know we have Jesus Christ in our lives. They can see how we work together. But the biggest thing is that they get that feeling.” Salem Hellers’ lasagna supper will be served on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church. The meal, which consists of a generous portion of lasagna, a piece of garlic bread, a salad and a drink, can be eaten on-site or picked up as takeout. The dinners can be paid for at the door the day of the event. Tickets will not be sold prior to the lasagna supper. The lasagna dinner features three types of lasagna - hamburger, a mixture of Italian sausage and hamburger or veggie with red sauce. Desserts will also be available for purchase. “People do love it,” said Sensenig of the Italian delicacy. “It’s not a complicated thing to make and you can make a whole bunch of it. Some people are really impressed. ... A lot of community people come back year after year. A lot of us have family who come and support it too.” Salem Hellers enhances its in-house lasagna dining experience by creating an ambiance that includes mood lighting, romantic music, decorations and candles on

Baby cuddler from pg 1 “Sometimes mom is really sick,” said Bowers. “Giving birth isn’t easy. Some moms have other children at home or have to go back to work. Sometimes it’s teenage moms who have to go back to school. Moms and dads just aren’t here all the time.” The NICU’s baby cuddling program has a waiting list that the hospital reviews once a year. Before they are accepted into the program, baby cuddlers undergo a thorough background check and training. They work in three-hour shifts, and a baby cuddler is on duty at the NICU 24/7. “We rock a lot of times,” said Keller. “ We also do the classic rock back and fo r t h w h i l e s t a n d i n g . Over that time, she has learned to manage the emotional attachments that develop between herself and the infants. “Wednesdays are the best part of my week,” said Keller of her 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift. “I end up coming out of there happy every time. I almost have a renewed outlook on life. Just feeling them and looking into their faces, that’s my reward.” “You become temporarily emotionally attached,” Keller added. “The day of discharge is a happy day. parts of Lancaster County. The babies are also from everywhere in Lancaster County, infants as young as 22 weeks old and usually facing some type of health challenge. Typically, the babies’ stays in the NICU range from seven days to four months. “Some are premature and can’t fight off infections,” said Margi Bowers, nurse manager of Women & Babies’ NICU. “There is research that shows infants who receive human touch have more positive outcomes, like gaining weight faster. Evidence shows that human touch increases the likelihood of trusting relationships later in life.” “It gives them a place in the world by looking into another person’s face,” said Keller. “Human interaction is so important to development. Human interaction helps them to eat better and sleep better. If we can be there when mom and dad can’t, that’s great.”

Concert to feature Steel Radiance The band Steel Radiance will perform at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park on Friday, Feb. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The all-female group will perform high-energy renditions of classic rock songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, such as “I Love Rock ‘òn’ Roll,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” “Pride and Joy” and “Sweet Caroline.” Steel Radiance formed nine years ago. Deb Olsen, the group’s drummer, said she had long wanted to play in an all-female band, and she was impressed at an open-mic night by a
performance by vocalist and guitarist Gabbie Bonet. Bonet had shared the stage with performers such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Carlos Santana, and was interested in the idea of a new band. In addition to Olsen and Bonet, Steel Radiance features two other central Pennsylvania women vocalist Terri Brown and bass guitarist Lisa Rettew. Its performances included a show at the Eicher in February 2023. There is a cover charge. TMD’s Traveling Bar will be serve drinks, and Brewster’s Bar-B-Que will sell food.

OASUS system is designed to ensure a safe and stable foundation for physical therapy sessions. T his secure structure accommodates children of different ages, heights, weights and abilities, and those with various therapy goals. The design of the OASUS system encourages the use of core and side muscles, essential for learning to stand and

The training event also provided an opportunity for the squadron members to earn certifications and strengthen their teamwork and leadership skills.

They are suppor ted by four stage managers and 10 members of the sound, lighting, makeup and costume crew. Senior Julia Fisher will star in the role of Charl i e B ro w n , s e n i o r I l s e Ness will play Snoopy, junior Mara Carlson will tackle the role of Luc y Van Pelt, junior Kayden Beidler will portray Linus Van Pelt and sophomore Landon Nyveldt will play Schroeder. “I have really enjoyed exploring the character of Charlie Brown and the world of the Peanuts,” said Julia. “All of the characters are innocent children, but they still connect with ver y grown-up feelings. Charlie Brown is a ver y sad 6-year-old, but he still tries to make other people feel happy. This is a very impressive thing for a 6-year-old to do. Even as teenagers and adults, we are not always there for other people when we are feeling sad or upset.” “ The show is giving them an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge,” said Coryell. “It creates a lot of light b u l b m o m e n t s . T h at ’s probably the most rewarding part for me.” “But I also hope (the students are) lear ning effective communication skills,” Coryell continued. “This is a collaboration. Hopefully they’re growing in their passion and understanding of other people. I hope they ’re giving themselves permission to fail and they’re learning to pick themselves up again. Theater is an awesome way to learn to approach life that way.” Auditions for the music a l p re s e n t at i o n co m menced around Thanksgiving, not long after the completion of LMS ’ fall play. Having those landmarks is impor tant to me as a director and my cast, b e c a u s e w h e n yo u h i t t he m , i t le t s u s k now where we are.” Of course, the shows represent the payoff. They’re rewards for all the hard work done behind the scenes. “On the nights of the per formance, (the students) have a lot of different things in their minds the lyrics of the songs, the notes, their choreography,” said Coryell. “There are a lot of moving parts. There are a lot of butterf lies and that’s OK . All that matters is that you get the butterflies flying in the right directions.” To get tickets for Lancaster Mennonite School’s performance of “ You’re a Good Man, Charlie B r o w n ,” g o t o w w w .lancastermennonite .org/events/hs- winter - mu s ic a l - yo u re - a - go o d -man- charlie-brown or call the LMS box office at 717-740-2456.
