Spring 5K Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
In the 10 years since the Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon council was founded, the organization has racked up some significant statistics. “We’ve had 12,800 girls cross the finish line,” said executive director Carrie Johnson, referring to both completing the program’s culminating 5K and finishing the GOTR 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. In addition, those teams completed 972 community impact projects. Currently, there is a team in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon, and more than 90 teams will take part in the current session. But for Johnson, the impact goes beyond mere numbers. As the local
organization celebrates its milestone anniversary, the staff is focused on a growth mindset that is about forging stronger bonds, not only with the girls who take part in the program, but also with their families, coaches, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and anyone involved with GOTR. “We want to deepen those relationships so that (all participants)

GOTR - A Decade Of Impact
At the end of each year, Lee Deremer, founder of LifeCycles, creates a presentation that shows each young man who participates in the program how far he has ridden a bicycle by taking part in regular weekly and added challenge rides. “We hold an endof-the-year celebration (with) an awards ceremony,” said Deremer. “I list all the boys who have participated by name on a map.” Deremer uses the map to create a fictional trip for each boy. “From Lancaster to State College (equals) 160 miles of riding,” explained Deremer. have helped to lead the national effort to support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have above-average intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation. Since 2002, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster has tutored more than 175 students with a dyslexic profile. The center serves children on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or religious affiliation. While there is no fee to the students served, it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one child for one year. The center also certifies adults as tutors in Orton-Gillingham and each year offers four scholarships toward the cost of training. Miami,” Deremer is especially proud of one participant who is slated to eclipse 4,000 miles when the group starts holding regular rides again in the spring. “(That young man has) gone through Texas and Mexico to the border of Panama,” said a smiling Deremer. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church and overseen by Deremer and his wife, Marcie. The program mentors boys from the greater Lancaster area in a bicycle touring environment. All equipment is provided to the boys free of charge. Deremer said that he began LifeCycles in 2014 when he reached a point of frustration seeing young men “derailed” by their circumstances. “I could no longer stand on the sidelines,” said Deremer. “I had to see if I could bring some resources together and do something.” Deremer was specifically concerned about boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who did not have a positive male role model in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing into an adult today,” said Deremer, adding that it is increasingly difficult without a mentor to provide guidance

about how to get there. Deremer and his wife began to pray about how to proceed. “(We knew) if we did this we needed to step out in faith,” Deremer explained. “We needed to find people who shared the vision of mentoring boys in a God-honoring environment (to) give them the opportunity to grow into the young men they were created to be.” In 2014, the couple took their vision to Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, where they met with the pastors and director of community groups. “They were supportive and asked us to bring it to the mission group,” said Deremer, who also gathered friends who shared the vision to form a board and incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In May 2015, LifeCycles held its first ride. The organization now rides more than 50 times per year. “We have now traveled more than 77,000 miles together,” noted Deremer. “That’s three times around the planet without injury.” From the middle of April until early September, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in outdoor locations in Columbia and Lancaster for about 90 minutes. “We have a welcome and a message, and we stretch,” said Deremer. “We ride about an hour and then we sit down for a hot meal.” All meals are donated by people who support the vision of LifeCycles. A New Holland branch of LifeCycles rides from Garden Spot Village on Wednesday evenings from April through November. Since the organization is now in its fifth year, some of the participants are now looking forward to getting a driver’s license, while others are in college or working in the local area. “All boys are working on the same issues,” noted Deremer. “They are trying to figure out what it means to go from age 13 to young adulthood in a smart way. They have questions to work through, and we are thrilled to engage with them.” Deremer is especially excited about an upcoming fundraiser for LifeCycles. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, a number of experienced adult riders will take part in the Do Hard Things Challenge Ride, which will begin at the Pennsylvania and New York state line, near Elmira, N.Y. “We will ride (through the night) from there to Williamsport and then all along the Susquehanna River to Wrightsville,” said Deremer, who explained that riders will raise funds through sponsorships. To inquire about volunteering, readers may email director@lifecyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511. More information about LifeCycles may be found at www.lifecyclesteam.org.
Seedling Sale Serves A Dual Purpose By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.” Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public
funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three self-pollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a See Seedlings pg 10

GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given in the Game-Changing Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a twoyear program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations. The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at SponaugleWilliamson Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.
The Retired Clergy and Church Workers Association at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will sponsor an event on Thursday, March 14, with Dr. Ron Gibson. Gibson, a professor at Lancaster Bible College and former pastor at Christian Fellowship Church in New Holland, will speak on “Ministry in the Retirement Years.” The event will begin with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. The presentation will follow, and the event will conclude with lunch. The event will be held at the GSV chapel and is free of charge. All retired clergy and church workers are invited to attend. Readers should preregister by calling 717-355-6000 or 717-355-6134.

Buckskin Matmen Compete in Districts by Leah Sintic

Conestoga Valley’s Austin Rider controls Waynesboro’s Matt McCann during a 138-pound quarterfinal match in the District Three Championships at Hersheypark Arena on February 22.
Five CV grapplers represented the Buckskins at the District III 3A championship last weekend in Hershey, and while none rose to the place in the top six of their weight class rankings, they have much to be proud of as their successful season comes to a close. Rafael Rodriguez (120), Cameron Kistler (126), Taylor Sheaffer (152), Austin Rider (138), and Josh MacNamara (160) were the five matmen that carried the CV banner at the individual portion of the District championships,
and though early bout losses for each put them out of contention for individual rankings, their hard work that brought them to this stage of the postseason is certainly an accomplishment. “A complete team effort, was a common phrase used by head coach Trent Turner to describe their season achievements. “It’s been memorable, historic, and exciting. In addition to winning the L-L League Section I regular season title with a 7-0 sweep, the squad went on to claim the District III 3A Section I championship in the post-season-for

The band will then resume playing until 10 p.m. CBJO is known for its repertoire of American big band music performances that aim to bring nostalgia and celebrate the nation’s history. CBJO will perform music associated with well-known favorites including Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, and other great artists of that era. In addition, a dancing group known as The Ladybirds will perform. “(The Ladybirds) will encourage others to get up and dance, said Divet, who added that dancing will be strongly encouraged this year. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (left photo) will play at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration at the Emerald Center (The E) on March 16 to help fund a STEM curriculum for the Access to Opportunities After-School program (right photo), also held at The E. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the band will begin to play at 8 p.m.
St. Anthony of Padua Church will offer meditative organ music during Lent Fridays, March 8 through April 12, at 1 p.m. Following the music, at 1:30 p.m., Resurrection Catholic School students will lead Stations of the Cross. On Good Friday, April 19, music will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will switch from the organ to piano, guitar and vocals. Afterward, at noon, St. Anthony’s youth ministry will present “Stations of the Cross for Families,â€? a prayerful retelling of Jesus Christ’s Passion. Parish and area musicians will play music of the Lenten season for meditation and contemplation. On March 8, Karl E. Moyer, organist at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Marietta, will open the program with the music of Camille SaintSaĂŤns, Johann Ludwig Krebs, J. S. Bach, Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner. On March 15, Terry Heisey, organist at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Lebanon, will play the organ. On March 22, Eileen Laurence will play the organ. Laurence leads the Willow Bells bell choir and the bell choir at First Presbyterian Church. Laurence also serves as a substitute organist. On March 29, Karen Eddinger, organist and Minister of Music at Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, will play the organ. On April 5, Robert Horton, organist and choirmaster at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will play the organ. On April 12, Murray Foreman, recently retired organist and director of music at Lancaster’s Grace Lutheran Church, will play the organ.
On April 19, at 11:30 a.m., Mark Erb, an organist at St. Anthony of Padua Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lancaster, will play piano. Bob Grabowski will accompany on guitar and vocals. He has served as a musician at St. Anthony of Padua and is music director there.
Program currently serves nearly 30 students in grades two through four from Nitrauer and Brecht elementary schools. “The students come Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., said Divet, who explained that the students are served a hot meal provided by a partnership with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The program includes yoga and other physical activities. Academically, there has been a focus on literacy. “We had education students from Millersville University doing one-on-one literacy intervention, and the students loved that, shared Divet. While the program has emphasized literacy, Divet noted that providing an allinclusive Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Math (STEM) component has been a goal of the program. The E is working with the North Museum in a partnership to provide a STEM program to the students. Funds raised at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration will help cover the costs of that program. Divet also hopes to raise the funds necessary to potentially hold a two-week summer program. Although the program would probably focus on literacy, a number of other activities could be included, such as yoga, team-building exercises, nutritional education, and more. Tickets for the dance may be obtained by searching “St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration, on Eventbrite. Tickets may also be purchased in person at The E.

The St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration held at the Emerald Center (The E) is designed for the enjoyment of those who enjoy the sounds associated with the musical era that began in 1935. But Mollie Divet, Access to Opportunities assistant director with The E, is equally as excited about what will happen when the music stops. “(When the band) takes a break, (we will) talk about the (Access to Opportunities) After-School Program, said Divet. The second St. Patrick’s Day Big Band event, which will benefit the after-school program, will be held at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the ballroom. Big band music provided by Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), heavy hors d’oeuvres, and green beverages will all be featured at the fundraiser. Divet laid out the evening’s schedule by noting that doors will open at 7 p.m. and that background music will be played while appetizers are served. “We will make an introduction and (explain) where the proceeds will go, said Divet, who noted that the band will begin to play at 8 p.m. During the band’s break at 9 p.m., attendees will learn about the Access to Opportunities program and be given a chance to donate. Individuals will receive a carnation colored to designate a specific donation amount. Divet noted that carnations will be colored green and

Martial Arts Demonstration Planned Kirk Wolfe, pastor at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, teaches karate for several reasons, but one stands out. “The children are my favorite (students) because they think they can’t break a board,” said Wolfe. “They just need to be trained … and when they break a board, you should see their faces … and their confidence goes sky high. That is really fun to watch.” Wolfe and his assistant, Japanese exchange student Natsuki Tsuruyama, will present martial arts techniques at a free demonstration to be held at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, 5971 Division Highway, Narvon, on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include 40 minutes of demonstration, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer period. Kirk Wolfe (right), pastor of Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, learned karate in Okinawa from Master Chotoku Makabe (left). Wolfe and Japanese exchange student Natsuki Tsuruyama (not pictured) will demonstrate a variety of martial arts forms at the church on March 9.
“We will be demonstrating all the things the students will be able to learn to do as they progress through their belt ranks,” explained Wolfe, who added that Okinawan karate, which includes the weapons; Korean taekwondo; kendo, which involves a sword; jiujitsu; and judo will all be demonstrated. Tsuruyama will demonstrate kendo and jiu-itsu, and Wolfe and some of his students will break boards. “Breaking teaches focus to be able to hit a specific spot, and it shows power,” said Wolfe. Wolfe added that the weapons that will be demonstrated will include the bo staff and the sai, which is like a large fork. “Most people are familiar with these weapons (because) the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (characters) use them,” Wolfe said. In addition, Wolfe will demonstrate open-hand forms. “These are a series of movements like a dance, (and) you can use the dance to defend yourself,” he said, noting that engaging in combat is not necessary for those who learn the discipline. “A lot of people look at the sport and think, ‘I will have to fight,’ but in Okinawa, they teach forms that are like a dance in elementary schools as part of their heritage. There’s a rhythm, but (each series includes) other kinds of (karate) movements, instead of just dance movements.” Wolfe, who is originally from Lititz, honed his skills in karate when he was stationed in Okinawa in the Air Force from 1990 to 1993. “We were homeschooling and looking for a gym for (our daughters),” explained Wolfe, who found Master Chotoku Makabe at the United Services Organization (USO). “I studied with him and enjoyed it, and I went to second-degree black belt in Okinawa,” said Wolfe, who has taught in the U.S. and taken part in demonstrations in Australia and Mexico. “I go back to Okinawa and continue testing, and I take students there to experience what it is like to be there at the roots of the (sport).” Wolfe’s other credits include serving as martial arts director for a Manheim sports complex and winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Oklahoma State Games and Pennsylvania’s Keystone Games. He was also a silver medalist at the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) national event, where he represented Oklahoma. As a teacher at the U.S. Air Force Security Police Academy, he taught physical apprehension and restraint techniques, and he currently serves as a police officer with the Quarryville police department and as a negotiator for the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. He teaches martial arts lessons with the Police Athletic League in Lancaster city, and he was an adjunct taekwondo instructor for Rose State College on Oklahoma City. Following the demonstration, Wolfe plans to hold year-round weekly free classes at the church on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., beginning on March 17. Classes will be divided based on interest. Interested individuals may sign up following the demonstration or register by calling the church at 717-354-8459.
