At Feathered Sanctuary, exotic birds are never homeless
BY JEFF FALK
The Feathered Sanctuary, located at 562 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand, is one of only a few exotic bird rescues in Pennsylvania. The relationship that exists between domesticated birds and people strikes at the heart of what the Feathered Sanctuary does.
“These birds are exotic,” said Sharon Shaub, the Feathered Sanctuary’s manager. “Anybody can have a dog. Not everyone can have a bird. Dogs like everybody. A bird has to like you and you have to know how to take care of a bird. If they do, they’ll love you.”
Feathered Sanctuary is currently home to 60 exotic birds - parakeets, parrots, cockatoos, macaws and cockatiels. Many of them have been surrendered to the Feathered Sanctuary, and most are waiting to be adopted by their forever homes.
“When the phone rings, we never know what kinds of friends we’re getting, where they’re from or what their circumstances are,” said Shaub. “Most of the time, people will call us and want to relinquish their birds. Sometimes owners go into the hospital and have no one to take care of them. Birds outlive their owners. Birds live a long time.”
“We’re all volunteers and we just love the birds,” added Shaub. “It’s not their fault they don’t have a home. We’ve made them our pets and our responsibility.”
For visitors, the atmosphere at the Feathered Sanctuary can be a little overwhelming at first. Coming from all directions, there’s energy and sounds and
sights that can only be compared to a menagerie.
“It’s just fun,” said Shaub of the rescue’s indoor environment.
just imitating. They’re big and they’re beautiful.”
The Feathered Sanctuary is certainly a unique nonprofit. But like most nonprofits, it has a need for funds and volunteers.
Ephrata Eats is good food seasoned for a reason
BY JEFF FALK
Innovative nonprofits really deserve a lot of credit; they come up with some very creative ways to raise money.
Take Good Samaritan Services and its upcoming Ephrata Eats
outing as an example. It’s an event featuring food, drink and fellowship, all in the name of healthy housing and sound financial practices.
“People love eating good food for a good cause,” said Mandy Ramos, Good Samaritan Services’

“There are no other rescues around,” said Shaub. “I get calls from Connecticut and Baltimore, and the only (other) two I know of are in New Jersey. That’s why we stay open; we want to help (the birds). Birds are expensive. They have to have a good cage and good food. If you don’t feed them good food, you’re not going to have a healthy bird.”
Feathered Sanctuary was started by Pequea resident Lynne Rothweiler in the late 1990s.

On a Saturday in July of 2020, Tim Rogers learned online that his brother-in-law, Justo Smoker, had been arrested for the kidnapping of Linda Stoltzfoos, a young Amish woman abducted in Bird-in-Hand and later murdered.
Tim and his daughter, Megan Shertzer, who was the only other family member at home, were reeling from the shock of the news when the doorbell rang. “My first thought was that I didn’t want to go to the door,” recalled Tim.
Waiting on the front step was an Amish neighbor who had heard the news and brought her family along with flowers and vegetables from her garden. The woman had been the teacher in the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse on the day of that tragedy in 2008. “She said, ‘I want you to know that there’s hope and God will take care of you,’” Tim reported. “We could see the tears in her eyes, and they were in mine too,” he noted, adding, “(That she would be) the person at the door offering what she offered,” recalled Tim. “It was

director of community engagement. “It’s a wide variety of food, everything from savory to sweet. It’s not a fancy event. It’s held at your local brewing company. You’re probably going to run into someone you know. It’s a very light event. It’s a very social event. You’re going to have a chance to win things and help a local nonprofit. We really want to make it an event where everyone has a good time.”
Good Samaritan Services will hold its Ephrata Eats event at Pour Man’s Brewing Company, 24 E. Main St., Ephrata, on Tuesday, March 12, at 6 p.m. More than 10 northern Lancaster County restaurants will be there with their unique culinary offerings.
Those attending will be afforded an opportunity
to vote for their favorite dishes.
There will also be music, giveaway drawings, other games and a direct appeal for Good Samaritan funding.
“One of our marketing aspects comes from when people see the restaurants who are going to be there,” said Ramos. “They know they’re going to have fun trying food they never tried before. The event is designed to bring in new people. We’re hoping a mix of marketing will get them there. But we also want our current donors there, those who already believe in the work we’re doing.”
“We love alliteration, and we live in Ephrata,” Ramos continued. “We wanted an event to showcase vendors. We assume our friends here in Ephrata like to eat.”
Ramos said Good Samaritan Services is hoping to attract 150 to 200 attendees to Ephrata Eats. It’s a turnout that would raise an estimated $50,000 of Good Samaritan Services’ multi-million-dollar operating budget.
“It’s a portion of what we need to run our nonprofit in Lancaster and Chester counties,” said Ramos. “We exist to help people move from crisis to stability. Housing is a big part of it, but it doesn’t
end with housing. It’s individual case management. We have a case manager who can help you with all your needs to hit stability. (Clients) have an advocate who is helping them with everything. It addresses the whole person.”
Functioning under the motto “Restoring Hope, Transforming Lives,” Good Samaritan Services operates in five locationsPhoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square, Lancaster city and Ephrata. The nonprofit, which addresses homelessness and poverty issues, was founded in Phoenixville in 1999 and opened its Ephrata office in 2011.
“Over the last 13 years, our commitment in this community has been to helping our neighbors,” said Ramos. “We want everyone in our community to have a chance to live a great life. We know this community. That’s why we wanted to have this event in Ephrata. We’re passionate about it. That’s what keeps us going every day.”

That day was the beginning of a journey that would show the Rogers family the depth of grace to be offered by the family members of Linda Stoltz -
foos and the greater community. Those experiences would lead both Tim and Megan to begin journaling - recording events as well as their emotional reactions and the questions the situation forced them to examine. The result of
those writings is “Beechdale Road,” a self-published book that represents Tim and Megan’s goal to share with others the hope and mercy they found in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Because Stoltzfoos was an aide to children with

special needs in a one-room schoolhouse, part of the proceeds from the sale of “Beechdale Road” will help support Amish special education in Lancaster County.
For Megan, the crime committed by someone she knew and cared for brought her face-to-face with questions she never anticipated having to answer. “(Justo) was a fun uncle,” she recalled. “One of the biggest things I have wrestled with is what to do when someone has done such a horrific, evil thing when that’s not who you know them to be.” Megan pointed to memories of an uncle she knew to be silly, safe, funny, caring, and supportive. “What do you do with that when we often want to define people as good or bad?” she asked. “What do you do when they’re both?”
What Megan learned through the experience is that “we are all both good and bad.” “It’s easy to forget that because then it affects us and it’s about us and not just those bad people out there who do bad things. It was a battle for me to learn (that).”
After Tim and Megan each discovered that the other was recording events and feelings, they began sharing their writings with each other. They discussed working
together on a project in an open-ended manner. “It was never, ‘We are going to write a book and this is how we’re going to do it, and it will be done by this time,’” said Megan.
One day Tim told a therapist who was helping the family deal with the situation about the understanding he and his family had received in the wake of the tragedy. “I shared a vignette of a moment that had happened with the Amish community,” recalled Tim. “(The therapist said), ‘That is so powerful; you need to
write this down.’” That conversation led to Tim and Megan beginning to put their writings into order. “We thought there was enough that could be helpful to put out to people,” said Tim. “The story for us is the grace of the Amish community and the mercy they offered to us in the middle of such a terrible tragedy. It was such a gift to us,” he said.
“Beechdale Road” will be available at the Gordonville Book Store and all Good’s Store locations beginning on Monday, April 1. More information about the book, including upcoming speaking engagements, may be found at www .beechdaleroad.com.

Before moving to its current location in December of 2023, the rescue experienced consistent growth and placed dozens of rescued birds in new homes.
“If you were interested in adopting a bird, you’d come here and look around,” said Shaub.
“Hopefully one of the birds would pick you. You can’t make the birds like you. That’s their prerogative. We want them to know
the person when they go home with them. There are some people birds just love. They’re smart. They’re very smart.”
“Every animal should be rescued,” Shaub continued. “So many need homes now. There are too many animals out there. Exotic birds are good pets.”

Students invited to enter art contest
The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.
Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.
In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.
Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.

STEPS
Orchestra to present “The Four Seasons”
Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” featuring William Hagen, in concerts on Friday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 9, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. The performances will take place at the Gardner Theatre at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road. A free pre-concert lecture will be presented 45 minutes before each performance. In addition to the Vivaldi piece, the program will feature “Simple Symphony” by Benjamin Britten. Composed when Britten was 20 years old, this work is an exploration of
youthful exuberance and creativity. The concert will also include Arvo Pärt’s homage to Britten, “Cantus in Memory of Britten.”
A native of Salt Lake City, Hagen began taking violin lessons at age 4 and debuted with the Utah Symphony at age 9. His training included studying at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, with Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School, and at the Kronberg Academy in Germany. He is an alumnus of the Verbier Academy in Switzerland, the Perlman Music Program, and the Aspen Music Festival.
Hagen has performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony, the Chamber
Orchestra of Europe, the San Francisco Symphony, and others. He has also performed at chamber music festivals and various European venues. Hagen won third prize at the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, making him one of the highest-ranking Americans ever in the competition. He performs on the 1732 Arkwright Lady Rebecca Sylvan Stradivarius, on loan from the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation.

Club plans bird-related program, field trips
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has planned several programs, which are free and open to the public.
The LCBC will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.
Todd Underwood, a pro-
fessor of biology at Kutztown University (KU), will present Migration Patterns and Overwintering Locations of Veeries in South America. Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song.
Using the latest tracking technology, Underwood
followed the migration of veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America. The presentation will discuss patterns of veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of these birds in South America.
Underwood earned a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada. At KU, he teaches courses on topics such as ornithology and animal behavior, and he studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood parasitism. Recently, he began a long-term study of the ecology of veeries breeding at French Creek State Park. Christopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a co-author on this presentation.
For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer two field trips in March. Preregistration by 6 p.m. the day before the trip is required.
On Saturday, March 9, John Lahr will lead a trip at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area at 4:30 p.m. Participants will look for American woodcock and waterfowl. The main objective of the trip is to hear or view the courtship display
