Church Yard Sale Will Fund Roof Project By Ann Mead Ash

In fall of 2018, when Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons heard that the church building needed a new roof, she had an idea. “I thought, ‘If we have a yard sale and people donate (items to sell), all the money we would make would be profit,’” said Simmons. Simmons took her idea to Lorin Wortel, who is chair of the capital campaign for the new roof, and they presented the suggestion to the church consistory board, and it was approved. The resulting indoor yard sale will be held in the basement of the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 30, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Simmons began gathering items for the sale in early October. “I was moving,

and I had a lot of things (to donate),” said Simmons. “We announced (that we were accepting contributions), and people began to bring donations in,” recalled Simmons, who noted that several of the five rooms set aside for the sale are already brimming. “ We have a lot of brand-new Pfaltzgraff dishes,” shared Simmons, who added that many pieces and familiar patterns are represented. Other new items will include brand-name uniform shirts and pants, new pants with tags, and new pillows made with a brandname foam. Because many of the church members are at the age where they are downsizing to different living accommodations or have estates to liquidate, there are antiques and a great many household items among the donations. Simmons said there will be a lot of See Church Yard Sale pg 6

The sale will be held in the church basement on March 29 and 30.

Promise Players To Present “Mobile Home Sweet Home” Ungemach is also a volunteer at the organization that will be benefited by the proceeds from the show’s performances. Formed in 2016 in response to a need to go beyond offering emergency shelter, Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) provides services to end the cycle of poverty while transforming the lives of families and individuals. Using the Housing First model, ECHOS assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, or in need of services who are already connected with the Elizabethtown area, including Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown. “You have to be sympathetic (to the people we serve),” Ungemach commented. “I’m so fortunate to have a home, but in other circumstances I could be there (where our clients are).”

Compassion is key when interacting with folks in need, as well as with anyone in general, and that is a message that comes through in “Mobile Home Sweet Home.” “It’s about relationships and not judging people,” said musical director Nancy Snyder, who will also appear in the show as Jennifer Crown. “Mobile Home Sweet Home” will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28; Fridays, March 22 and 29; and Saturdays, March 23 and 30. Matinees will start at 2:30 p.m. on March 23 and 30 and on Sundays, March 24 and 31. The doors will open one hour prior to show time. Child care for preschoolers will be offered during the shows. “When I picked up the script (for a read-through), I laughed multiple times,” Promise Players community Christian theater group director Doreen Creighton said of choosing this spring’s play, “Mobile Home Sweet Home” by Pat Cook. “There’s a lot of sarcasm, and Tim (Strawser) pulls it off very well.” At the center of it all is Strawser’s character, Loff DuVall, who has run the Hampton Court trailer park with his wife, May June (Linda Ross), for more years than he can count. Loff is hoping to take May June on a vacation to escape the zaniness of the residents. Vonell Rafferty (Laura Scott-Wise) tries multiple income schemes, the latest of which is searching for treasure with a metal detector. Lydia Spagway (Melody Risser) needs help removing her grandchild’s

hand from where it is stuck in a toilet. Rhonda DeFalco (Wanda Jenkins) just wants to gossip, and Goose Halford (Ken Hess) tells long stories, such as how his grandpa has a metal plate in his head. “The kids used to catch him asleep and put ‘frigerator magnets on his forehead,” Goose relates to Loff. Compounding the stress is a request from Loff’s future daughter-in-law, Anne (Christine Tedesco), who wants to film a reality television show in Hampton Court. And, to add insult to injury, Etta Frobisher (Creighton) has it in for Hampton Court. “She’s being nitpicky and trying to find anything to get this shut down,” Creighton said of her character. “She’s bossy and hungry for power. She’s just a bully.” Frobisher is not any kinder to her younger sister, Edith Maxwell, who is played by Creighton’s reallife older sister, Karen Ungemach.

The Launies from pg 1 Celtic duo The Launies, consisting of Jamie O’Brien and Henry Koretzky, will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 16. The doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will start at 7:30 p.m. London-Irishman O’Brien lived in Pennsylvania for almost 20 years before moving to Arizona in 2006. He currently performs regularly throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, the Southwest and Hawaii,

and he also tours frequently in Canada and Europe. His repertoire includes songs he learned at hooleys (family gatherings) from parents, grandparents and other relatives, along with other tunes he picked up from fellow Irish musicians on his journey through Europe and across the Atlantic to the U.S. He also plays island music he learned while collaborating with musicians in Hawaii. Koretzky, from Harrisburg, performs an eclectic mix, including

bluegrass, swing, and country. He sings and plays the mandolin, mandocello and guitar as a solo performer, accompanist and band member. In addition to The Launies, he performs with Sink or Swing, the Harrisburg Mandolin Orchestra and others. In The Launies, O’Brien sings and plays the guitar and ukulele, and Koretzky contributes vocals, mandolin and mandocello. Together, the musicians present a wideranging selection of music from

styles found on both sides of the Atlantic, accompanied by descriptions of the material. Admission to the concert is free. The cafe offers coffee beverages, Italian sodas, and baked goods for sale. Sophomore Karli Raasch and senior Nick Lynam made quite a splash at the PIAA District III meet on March 1st and 2nd, combining for a total of three podium finishes to represent the CV swimmers. Raasch raced her way to two thirdplace finishes with a season best time of 2:07.6 in the 200 IM and a lifetime best of 57.01 in the 100 butterfly. Raasch shaved a full two seconds off of her 200 IM seed time of 2:09.87, and exceeded expectations with her podium finish in the butterfly coming into the event seeded ninth. “Karli had a pretty nice meet, celebrated head coach Barb Raasch. Lynam earned himself second

place in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.12, just behind Muhlenberg’s Roanoke Shirk, who set a new district record with his time of 1:39.06. Lynam was also in the mix during the 500 free event, finishing just short of the podium in fourth, with a time of 4:36.34. “Nick is definitely looking towards the State meet, noted Raasch. Both Raasch and Lynam’s performances put them in contention for an appearance at States, with competition to be held at Bucknell University in mid-March. Final place seedings were not determined at press time. Sarah Marston, a junior, completed the 200 free in under two minutes, for a season-best time

of 1:59.69 to touch in 16th, and also put up a time of 54.49 in the 100 free coming in 15th. Marston and Raasch were accompanied by Avery Heisey and Lauren Nedrow to compete in two relay events and their combined efforts earned them a 10th place finish in the 400 free (3:46.59) and 14th in the 200 free (1:44.18). Auden Block was the sixth member of the Buckskin swim team to represent CV at the District meet and the senior finished strong with a lifetime best, 55.96, in his 100 butterfly event. “He took almost a full second off his seed time, breaking 56 for the first time, praised Raasch. “A nice way to end his high school swimming career.

New Student Loan Program Posted Prospective college students who may be applying for financial aid this year are encouraged to consider the new PA Forward Student Loan Program. The PA Forward State Grant Program provides low-cost, alternative student loans for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as loans for parent borrowers. The program is designed to complement other forms of student aid, such as the PA State Grant Program and low-cost federal loans. Pennsylvania students who need help paying for college after exhausting their eligibility for gift aid and low-cost federal student loans are encouraged to

apply. Additionally, borrowers who are in repayment and want to combine their debt after graduation to outstanding student debts and achieve a lower monthly payment can benefit from a PA Forward Refinance Loan. PHEAA is the lender and servicer of the loans, with taxexempt financing provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. PA Forward participants can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitively low interest rates. There are immediate credit approvals and flexible repayment options, with no application or origination fees. Borrowers can get discounted interest rates by enrolling in an automatic direct debit repayment program and simply by graduating. Borrowers can receive a .25 percent interest rate reduction for enrolling in an automatic direct debit program and an additional .50 percent interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Borrowers also benefit from a six-month grace

period after graduation before the first payment is due. This allows borrowers time to get their finances in order, including time to find a job, before repayment begins. Borrowers who take full advantage of the program’s benefits could save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. PHEAA encourages students and their families to exhaust all eligibility for grants and scholarships before considering a student loan. When borrowing is necessary, students should first apply for low-cost federal student loans before turning to an alternative student loan, which may have higher interest rates. To help students make informed choices about their higher education funding plans that can prevent unnecessary or excessive borrowing, PHEAA created www.mysmartborrow ing.org. This free resource helps users understand how different career, school, and financial decisions made during the college planning process can influence their total cost of an education and their ability to repay any student loans after graduation.

Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, will host Ranky Tanky, a high-energy band offering a blend of blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues, on Friday, March 22, at 7 p.m. The band’s name comes from the West African language of Gullah. Loosely, the phrase translates to “work it” or “get funky,” a sentiment that is embodied in the band’s blend of music. Based in Charleston, S.C., the band released its debut album in October 2017. LBC students will also have the chance to perform with the musicians of Ranky Tanky, as the college’s 50-voice chorale will provide backup vocals for the awardwinning ensemble. Tickets are available for a range of prices, and group, senior, and student prices are available. For tickets and more information, readers may visit www.lbc.edu/events.

Emilly Settle, and May Settle. Kim, a seventh-grade student, was born in Myanmar. Her first language is Tedim, and her second language is Burmese. She said she likes Resurrection because it provides daily opportunities for her to learn about God in a safe environment. A firm belief in the value of Catholic education led Ganse, a retired pharmacist, to form CEF to help students like Kim. The four-year-old independent nonprofit raises money for tuition assistance. Tuition was not a barrier to education for Ganse, who attended St. Joseph School and Lancaster Catholic High School in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and he wants to help provide the same opportunity for today’s children in Lancaster. To learn more about CEF, readers may contact Ganse at 717577-2735.

LEFC Holds Groundbreaking Wood Earns Eagle Scout Award

Church Plans Renewal Meetings Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Highway, Ephrata, will hold renewal meetings from Sunday, March 17, to Wednesday, March 20. A service will take place at 10:15 a.m. on March 17, and evening services will be held each day at 7 p.m. The speaker will be Dale Keffer of Virginia. All are welcome to attend.

and a permanent baptistry. LEFC was started in the late 1970s by a group of Lancaster Bible College professors. The first official meeting was held in the Neffsville Fire Hall in 1980. The congregation later moved to the Lititz Rec Center and then purchased the Rome Mill Restaurant, now known as The Mill, in

1985. Ten years later, LEFC dedicated a new building at the current site on Pierson Road, across the street from The Mill. Since then, several expansions have been completed. According to senior pastor Tony Hunt, the new expansion is scheduled to be finished and in use by Easter of 2020.

Lancaster Evangelical Free Church recently held a groundbreaking celebration.

An image shows what Lancaster Evangelical Free Church is expected to look like after a significant expansion.

Aaron Wood, 13, of Lititz achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on Nov. 19, 2018. Aaron is the son of Mike and Jessica Wood and the brother of Adam and of Alex, who is also an Eagle Scout. Aaron started his Scouting career in Texas and then continued it in Guam before joining Troop 84 in Neffsville. To attain the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate leadership and community service by organizing and carrying out an Eagle project. Aaron’s Eagle Scout service project benefited Green Meadow Farm in Leola. Green Meadow Farm offers individualized mentoring opportunities to children and teenagers struggling with trauma or emotional difficulties. With the help of his troop, Aaron made a picnic table and mulched an area under two trees where parents and other family members can sit and relax while their child is spending time with the horses. Aaron is an eighth-grader at

Manheim Township Middle School, where he is a member of the cross-country and track teams, swim team, concert band, jazz band, AV Club, and Odyssey of the Mind program. He has also been listed on the first honor roll and has participated in County Band. He is on the equipment squad for the high school marching band, which he plans to join when he enters ninth grade.

Aaron Wood achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in November 2018.
