Penn State Master Gardeners

By Ann Mead Ash

According to Dara Slater, director of the Gerald G. Huesken Middle School play, “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey,” by Tim Kelly, the show has graced the school stage at least twice before - first in 1999 and again in 2008. Slater has chosen to present the story again because she enjoys the humor and nostalgia associated with the Indiana Jones-style comedy. “It’s a really funny plot and a funny premise,” shared Slater. “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey” will be staged at the school, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Conestoga Valley School District-area senior citizens who wish to attend may do so for free on Thursday, See “Hurricane Smith” pg 5

Sweet Pea Plans First Fundraising Skate By Ann Mead Ash

Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, wanted to hold a fundraiser that would be inclusive of the entire community. “Our board members … were thinking of things our children like to do that would be a fun way to get the community involved,” said Cole. After a little brainstorming, the group decided to hold the first Sweet Pea Skate at The Castle Roller Skating, 1400 Elm Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 4. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a special low admission price will be charged until 7:30 p.m. All funds

Area Residents Invited To “Thirsty?”

When Lancaster Bible College (LBC) senior Ken Hatridge considered what his senior project should entail, he decided to focus on his future. “My passion is to work with choirs and orchestras within the church once I graduate,” said Hatridge, who has been interning under Calvary Church choir and orchestra director John Frye for more than a year. Working with the Calvary choir of about 90 and orchestra with up to 40 members, Hatridge will present his senior project, titled “Thirsty? Come See “Thirsty?” pg 12

A year ago, Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons conceived the idea of holding a yard sale in a revelation she refers to as a “God moment.” Simmons partnered with fellow church member Lorin Wortel, and the two worked with others in the congregation to hold the first indoor yard sale. The successful sale raised more than $8,000 toward replacing the roof on the nearly 300-year-old church. This year, the large stained glass window on the north side of the sanctuary is in need of restoration, and Simmons and Wortel have partnered again to organize the second indoor yard sale to See Yard Sale pg 4

Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church members display items that will be sold at the church’s second indoor yard sale to help raise funds for building maintenance. This year’s sale will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on March 20 and 21.

a separate fee to rent skates. The event will end at 10 p.m. Cole and the other organizers hope to have up to a dozen prizes donated by local businesses to give away during the event. So far, a sheet cake, a gift card for ice cream, a basket of prizes, a three-month athletic center subscription, and gift certificates to local restaurants are among the prizes. In addition, the rink will give away prizes, such as a party at the rink, as part of its normal activities. Funds raised by the event will help to support Sweet Pea’s 10th annual Sisters and Brothers Picnic, which will be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. The event is for children who had a sibling who was lost during pregnancy or infancy. Parents are invited to bring their surviving and subsequent children. “The picnic includes parking, free admission, pizza, and a sundae bar,” said Cole. A special part of the picnic is a chance to visit land inside Dutch Wonderland that has been designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole. According to Cole, the feeling of losing a child is not forgotten by a family. “We

Simmons and Wortel noted that funds raised by the yard sale are used only for building maintenance and that last year’s event drew volunteers from throughout the congregation. “Last year’s sale involved almost every church member,” said Simmons. “There’s a community feeling because everyone (participates),” added Wortel. Simmons stated that the Salem Hellers congregation shares the building with All Saints Church and that the yard sale involves all who worship in the building. “This is a project both congregations can help with because it repairs our house of worship,” she said, adding that Salem Hellers holds services at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday and that All Saints meets at 10:45 a.m. Items that are left after the sale will be donated to local organizations. “Hurricane Smith” from pg 1 March 26, at 6:30 p.m. The play-within-a-play story of Hurricane Smith takes place on a movie set where a film director, played by Richard Zapata, is finishing up directing a film. Gloria Daily, a student and aspiring writer, played by Cora Glacken, arrives with her school drama club in tow and her original script under her arm. Daily’s story involves the orphaned Hurricane Smith, a famous explorer, played by Evan Zimmerman, whose parents reportedly died in the Amazon while he was still a child. His father disappeared while searching for the

Garden of the Golden Monkey. When Hurricane is given a golden monkey by a mysterious foreigner, he sets out to discover the fate of his parents with the lovely photojournalist Linda Zest, played by Alison Harner. The duo encounter adventure including plane crashes, parachute jumps, and the Cobra People, led by Cobra Woman, played by Avery Hehnley. Slater noted that the large cast of nearly 30 students is an energetic and enthusiastic group, which can be challenging. The play calls for staged combat as well, which she said the students are working

to learn for the show. According to Slater, the plot offers audiences a taste of swashbuckling comedy. “It is supposed to be kind of hokey,” noted Slater, adding that one of her favorite parts is when Smith and Zest arrive in the Amazon, where they are required to swim rapids and climb mountains. “The way the teenage playwright chooses to depict that is by having them climb ladders and pretend they’re swimming through sheets of fabric,” she said. “I like the fact that you can capitalize on the corniness of it.” While the presentation focuses on fun and humor, Slater relayed that there is a message. “The reason (Smith) goes back to the

Amazon in search of the golden monkey is because no one knows what really happened to his father,” she said. “It’s presumed that his father’s plane crashed, and (his father) died, but Hurricane doesn’t really know that (for sure).” In searching for his identity, Smith learns that the evil

Cobra Woman has taken over, and she forces the local people to work in the diamond mines. “Hurricane (has the opportunity to) throw her out of power and reinstate his father’s wife to restore justice to the village,” said Slater. Slater hopes area residents will come to enjoy the fun. “It’s a show

that is good for the whole family,” she noted. Tickets for the show may be purchased from any cast member, by searching for “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey” at www.showtix4u.com, or at the door prior to the show. Tickets will be discounted for students.

/promise-players. Payment will be accepted at the door. Children age 12 and under may donate nonperishable food items for local foods banks in lieu of payment. Free child care will be provided for children under age 6. The stage will be placed in the corner of the sanctuary and the chairs will be rearranged so that even those seated in the back corners will have a sightline to the action. The new stage location will accommodate a larger audience, too. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.” “About 10 years ago, someone approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton recalled. “The same person came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.” The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes well-known Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said. The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church, which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). After the guest musicians burst onto the scene and sing their first number, Sanders family patriarch Burl (Tim Strawser) introduces his wife, Vera (Nancy Snyder, who is also the production’s music director); their daughter June (Sarah Shirk); and their fraternal twins Denise (Sophie Hatalsky) and Dennis (Doug Hostetler). Burl’s brother, Stanley (Ken Hess), has tagged along, as he was recently released from

prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs. In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show ’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted. June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players. “It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said. Hatalsky and Hostetler are also Promise Players newcomers. Additionally, Hatalsky is new to the area, and making the cast has eased the transition. “When I moved down, I didn’t know anybody, and (the cast) felt like a family,” she commented. Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton. Dorothy Smith plays accordion and appears as Myrtle to Doreen’s Maude, two unspeaking characters referenced in the script. For more information about “ S m o k e o n t h e M o u n t a i n ,” readers may visit http://lamp cob.com/promise-players or call the church at 717-4642050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Pictured on front: The Promise Players theater group will present “Smoke on the Mountain” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on March 20 to 22 and 26 to 29.

“The house always wins” is not what people who enjoy gaming want to hear, but there is an exception. When the third biennial “The House Always Wins” fundraiser event is held on Friday, April 3, Clare House Lancaster and its residents - and, by extension, the community at large - will be the real winners. The 1920s-themed party will take place in the Imperial Grande Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, from 7 to 11 p.m. Parking will be available in the neighboring Duke Street garage, and tickets will be validated at the front desk of the hotel. The Keating Jazz Orchestra will provide music for dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a cash bar will be open. Professionals will host a variety of games. “The House Always Wins” is designed to be an enjoyable way for individuals and businesses to support Clare House Lancaster, whose mission is to help homeless women and children become stabilized and build healthy, empowered lives. The organization was founded by a group of Catholic nuns 40 years ago, said Maryanne O’Neill, who became the executive director on June 12, 2019, after

previously heading up Mom’s House of Lancaster. Clare House no longer identifies as faith-based, but a number of religious organizations in Lancaster County provide support. Clare House provides housing for single women and their children for up to a year and offers an additional six months of after care. The two houses at 342-344 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, can accommodate seven families with up to 20 children. “We are one of the few shelters that allow children - especially boys - under age 18 to stay with their moms,” O’Neill said, adding that keeping families together reduces stress on both mothers and children. Every woman is paired with a case manager, who helps her find employment and, if needed, child care. Clients are also connected with mental health services. A weekly group therapy session was recently launched at Clare House, and the feedback from the clients was overwhelmingly positive. “About 75% of people coming into our program have experienced trauma,” O’Neill reported. While women and families live at Clare House, the organization provides everything they need except for food,

which the women can usually get for themselves with SNAP or TANF benefits. If they do not have benefits, the case manager helps them to apply, and the Clare House community rallies around the client. “That’s what’s great about the Lancaster community,” case manager Michelle Rybner remarked. “If we need something, we reach out to our partners.” While parents are focusing on workplace development and saving for living in their own homes, Clare House staff members strive to keep life typical for the children. Birthday celebrations are routinely held for the youngsters. “We aim to be family-friendly,” O’Neill said. Sometimes the parents are little more than children themselves. Clare House has been increasingly serving young people transitioning out of foster care as well as high school students. “It takes time to build rapport,” said program director Dawn Allen, adding that she is thrilled when a client moves from reticence to openness. Clare House Lancaster is entirely donor-funded, making fundraisers like “The House Always Wins” an important part of its budget. Volunteers are also crucial to operations, as they help with maintenance, child care, homework, and encouragement for clients. O’Neill would like to develop a mentorship program and welcomes inquiries from interested volunteers. Sponsorships and tickets are available for “The House Always Wins.” Tickets must be purchased in advance. Admission will be restricted to adults age 21 and older. To buy tickets or learn more, readers may visit www.clarehouselanc aster.org or call 717-291-8967.

He receives occupational therapy, working on building strength and endurance in his muscles. He has been coming to Schreiber for a little more than a year, and his mother Nicole said he has made tremendous progress. He and his parents live in Penn Township near Manheim. Jalaya Cooper, who turned 10 in January, was diagnosed with hypotonia, meaning low muscle tone, at the age of 7 months. Since then, she has received therapy to treat this condition and help her overcome a series of developmental delays. Schreiber’s 38th annual gala will be held on Saturday, March 21, at Listrak’s headquarters, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. This year’s gala, with the theme “A Schreiber Big ‘80s Party,” will be offered with the support of many sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor Brittany’s Hope. Among the new features for this year’s gala are the new location, the first appearance by the Uptown Band, and the first use of text-to-give technology during a special portion of the live auction to raise money for the Schreiber Endowment Fund. The gala will also include formal introductions of this year’s Schreiber ambassador children. The stories among the ambassadors are all different, and their challenges are unique, but their families have one thing in common: They sought and received assistance from Schreiber. David Albino, who turned 5 in January, was born with cerebral palsy. He started services with Schreiber when he was an infant and now receives occupational, physical and speech-language therapies and attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool. As a result of his work at Schreiber, David has learned to sit up, stand, speak and walk and continues to improve his ability to move independently with his walker and to

Worthy?” Other choir selections will include “The Solid Rock,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and “All the Way My Savior Leads Me.” The Calvary orchestra will play “Festival of Praise Medley,” and Hatridge will lead the congregation on “My Eyes Are Dry” and “Fairest Lord Jesus.” Hatridge noted that the concert will conclude with a hymn sing and be followed by a time of refreshment and fellowship. Prior to coming to LBC, Hatridge lived near Bath, Maine, where he worked as a timber framer at the Shelter Institute. “This is career number two,” said Hatridge, who grew up in southern Missouri. During the 13 years he worked as a timber framer, Hatridge also served as a volunteer music minister, running choir rehearsals at a nearby church. “About three and a half years ago, God called me to full-time ministry,” said Hatridge, who began matriculating through the LBC accelerated undergraduate online degree program. In December 2017, Hatridge completed his associate degree in biblical studies. Shortly thereafter, a decision was made to continue his education toward a worship arts degree at LBC. “We uprooted family and came down here,” said Hatridge, who brought his wife, Jennifer, and three of his four children to Lancaster. Stephen Rotay, president and owner of Rotay Capital Finance in Lancaster, and Bob Reagan, senior vice president with North Mill Capital LLC based in Princeton, N.J., recently hosted a networking occasion for 30 local financial experts, lenders and vendors. The evening function was held in early February at the Hampton Club of Lancaster. A reception, dinner and interactive presentation included an informational exchange on how to further help small businesses and individuals with finance and lending alternatives to traditional banks or having to meet the investment criteria of private equity or venture capital firms, among others. According to Rotay, the event supported current views about the lending industry, foreseeing a good market ahead for consumers who need more sources of capital to operate, expand and provide work for their businesses, staff and labor. Also discussed was how Rotay and Reagan work together for their clients with customized financing

and D.C. for Energy Kinetics, and Scott Ansel of Meyer Oil Company, Cleona, president of the Southeast PA Chapter of OESP, participated in the donation. According to HVAC/R instructor Michael Arnt, the new boiler will allow students to train on the same type of equipment that they will see when they are out on the job. He added that supply costs are a significant factor in determining the specific hands-on work that is done in class. Arnt said that donations of materials like the new boiler make a huge difference in the overall education of the students in his class.
