Students To Stage Funny Fairy Tale Heart Gallery
Plans Art Auction
By Ann Mead Ash
When Dara Slater, director of the Gerald G. Huesken Middle School production of “Haphazardly Ever After,” chose the show, she did so because the play did not fit the mold of a typical fairy tale. “(The play) has a lot of surprises,” noted Slater. “It’s not predictable.” Middle school students will present the play at the school, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Conestoga Valley School District-area senior citizens who wish to attend may do so for free on Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. “Haphazardly Ever After,” by Jeff Fluerty, is the story of King Barnabas, played by Mason Hutchinson, and Queen Mildred, played by Sierra Land, who are anxious to live happily ever - as soon as their four adult children move out of the castle. As narrated by Elle Emrey, the royal offspring are obnoxious and difficult, but most of all blocking their parents from living in peace. Princess Cinnamon, played by Mary Eckert, is less than nice; Princess Peppermint, played by Sarina Nickison, is less than a genius; Prince Hairgel, played by William Roland, is more concerned with appearance than substance; and Prince Slacker, played by Evan Zimmerman, is See Funny Fairy Tale pg 5
Members of the cast of the Gerald G. Huesken Middle School production of “Haphazardly Ever After” include (front, from left) Sierra Land, Mason Hutchinson, (back) Evan Zimmerman, William Roland, Sarina Nickison, and Mary Eckert. The show will play at the school on March 29 and 30.

Cavod To Present “Anne Of Green Gables” Community Invited To Catch “Big Fish” At LCHS By Ann Mead Ash
“The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation,” said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a great-grandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family.” Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences introduced to the red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables,” adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 5 and 12; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14. Ashley Gage plays Anne Shirley, an

Lancaster Catholic High School student cast members of “Big Fish” are preparing to stage the show at the school from March 28 through 31. By Ann Mead Ash
Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director, chose the musical “Big Fish” for the school’s spring production because she loves the story,
which is based on the Daniel Wallace novel of the same name, but she also chose it for the message it holds. “I want (audience members) to hold tight to their family relationships,” she said. “If there’s anything that’s broken or strained, (I See “Big Fish” pg 8

they had the whole show.” Slater also added that the cast members are working well together and learning from each other. “When (some cast members) see their peers develop a character and bring it to life, it motivates (them) to do the same,” she said. According to Slater, “Haphazardly Ever After” is a fastpaced production that should appeal to all generations. “This is a show where you can bring small children and teenagers and grandparents, and everyone is going find it funny and enjoyable,” she said. Slater also feels that audience members will see themselves and their children in some of the characters, and that the ending has a realistic ring to it. “The message is that happiness sometimes comes in unexpected places,” explained Slater. “You can live happily ever after in a way you hadn’t anticipated.” Tickets for the show may be purchased from any cast member, by visiting www.showtix4u.com, or at the door prior to the show. a tad lazy. To remedy the situation, the king and queen turn to a royal therapist, played by Sachi Singh, and royal teachers, played by Anna Hartraft and Paige Harris. They even consider marrying off their children to royal suitors, played by Brodie Kauffman, Connor Nafziger, and Carly Shiffer. W hen none of the solutions work, the queen turns to the Magic Mirror, played by Sadie Yudof, and a fairy godmother, played by Hartraft. Daunted by costs and the need for permits, the couple decides on a do-ityourself fairy tale they see advertised at the Enchanted Depot. W hen royal chaos ensues, three fairies (played by Ella Wanner, Allison Harner, and Avery Hehnly), along with royal servants (played by Sean Bell, Haley Jack, and Devin Zook), and a page, played by Paige Harris, intervene in a final attempt to help the couple achieve their dream. Slater said that the play, which was published in 2013, contains a number of references to aspects of popular culture. “The lazy prince is always on his smartphone playing Angry Peasants,” said Slater, who added that the show boasts a number of special effects made possible by faculty member Chris Miller. Challenges of the play have included a rehearsal schedule that has been interrupted by snow days and some physical humor that Slater called “initially daunting.” “There’s a fight sequence behind the sofa where the students pop up at different times,” she said, adding that the actors have mastered the complicated choreography of the scene. Slater has been impressed by other accomplishments of the 23-member cast. “I told them they needed to be off book by Friday, March 1,” recalled Slater, who scheduled the first practice for mid-January. “By March 1,

“Big Fish” from pg 1 hope they) try to heal that (because) we don’t know when our last moment will be.” “Big Fish,” a tale of extraordinary proportions, will be staged at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 28 through 30, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Wagner noted that students will sell daffodils during performance breaks to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. “During the show, there is one moment when (audience members will have a chance to) hold up the daffodils they purchased and be a part of the show,” explained Wagner. The play focuses on Will Bloom, played by Kameron Garcia, who is struggling with his relationship with his father, Edward, a former traveling salesman, played by Tony Dominguez. As Will prepares to become a father, he reflects on his own childhood and the extravagant
stories his father told him that included mermaids and other fantastic elements. As an adult, Will feels the tales told by his oftenabsent father were simply myths. He has even stopped believing the story of how his father proposed to his mother, Sandra, played by Claire Wolfe, in a field of daffodils. But, as Edward begins to lose his battle with cancer, Will decides to visit, and with encouragement from his wife, Josephine, played by Aria Yang, Will sets off to learn the truth. “Will’s wife, Josephine, (tells him), ‘If you understand the stories, you will understand the man,’” said Wagner, who added that the audience will see the stories come to life before their eyes in a tale that employs both comedy and drama. The musical will have the 35member cast singing and dancing in styles that range from classic Broadway to country and folk for
the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” Wagner cited “The River Between Us,” which is sung by Edward and Will about their broken relationship, and “I Don’t Need a Roof,” which is sung by Sandra to Edward. As Sandra, Wolfe will age from age 18 into middle age. “I like playing the young version of Sandra. She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have fun).” Dominguez likes how
the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the song) ‘Fight the Dragons,’” said Dominguez, who added that Edward sings this song to Will. “(In the song, Edward) is saying he will fight the dragons and win the battles, and he hopes that one day his son will fight the dragons with him and carry on to fight them himself,” explained Dominguez. “That song really touches my heart because I lost my father at the age of 6, and this entire musical has helped me connect with (who he was) better.” To help prepare the actors, Wagner scheduled a master class with Broadway performer Ciara Renée for March 16. Renée was a member of the 2013 Broadway cast of “Big Fish.” Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “Big Fish” may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

Quilts from pg 1 2019 marks the 10th year that the American Quilter’s Society (AQS) has hosted a QuiltWeek Show in Lancaster. The event will be held from Wednesday, March 27, to Saturday, March 30, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. “More than 15,000 people will meet in Lancaster, one of the oldest inland towns in the United States, to enjoy a four-day quilting and fiber arts showcase event,” said AQS executive show director Bonnie Browning. “Each QuiltWeek Show is about bringing quilters together to share ideas and inspiration, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Lancaster.” AQS QuiltWeek 2019 includes six events across the country, with its second show of the year in Lancaster. Each show offers a variety of programming, including special exhibitions, workshops by renowned instructors, contests, and a merchant mall with the latest machines, fabrics, and tools for quilters of every skill level. In addition to more than 460 quilts on display, $54,000 in prizes will be awarded during the four-day event in Lancaster. AQS-certified quilt appraisers will also be on hand to appraise new and vintage quilts for insurance documenta-
tion, sale, or donation purposes. Evening events will include “Creativity and Quilt Play: An Evening With Victoria Findlay Wolfe,” “Success With Scrap Quilts: An Evening With Deb Tucker,” and the famous All-Star Review, featuring instructors sharing techniques and comaraderie. A total of 11 exhibitions will be held over the show’s four days. For the full list of exhibitions, readers may visit https://bit.ly/2HKhxeE. A sampling includes the following: The “35 Years of AQS Anniversary Showcase” will feature 15 of the previous Best of Show winning quilts at AQS QuiltWeek Shows, which are on loan from the permanent National Quilt Museum collection. In addition, this exhibit will also include a collection of AQS show pins, a T-shirt quilt by Molinda Lauxmiller featuring shirts from previous AQS QuiltWeek shows, and other AQS memorabilia from the past 35 years. Minnesota is the home of Cherrywood and the late musician Prince, and those have been combined in “The Prince Cherrywood Challenge,” with Prince-inspired pieces created with Cherrywood hand-dyed fabric. The “50 State Salute” exhibit will feature patriotic-themed quilts
intended for the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which will distribute them to veterans and military members touched by war. The quilts are meant to inspire all levels of quiltmakers and to showcase the many possibilities for expressing gratitude to those who have served in the military through quilts. Novel depictions of famous Lone Star quilt patterns will be showcased in “Singular Stars: Lone Star Quilts From Judy Martin.” In these quilts, Martin explores strippieced Lone Stars, taking them in new directions with the addition of undulating curves, gradations of color, starburst elements, satellite stars, strip-pieced diamond borders, and other design elements. Adding an international flavor to the show, the 14th Quilt Nihon Exhibition will be displayed in Lancaster. Organized by Japan Handicraft Instructors’ Association, the largest organization of handcraft instructors in Japan, the Quilt Nihon Exhibition is one of the most prestigious international quilt contests in that country. Of the 256 entries from 11 countries in two categories - innovative traditional quilt and contemporary quilt - 82 award-winning quilts were selected for the traveling exhibition.
There is a cost to attend the QuiltWeek Show, and purchasing tickets in advance is encouraged. To buy tickets or learn more about the event, readers may visit www.quiltweek.com. Pictured on front: From ultramodern to traditional and everything in between, the American Quilter’s Society QuiltWeek Show in Lancaster will feature plenty of eye-catching coverlets and classes. To add musical accompaniment to the show, a flautist has been retained to play during transitions and key moments. “This is one way we are making it a little different, and I think that will be a lot of fun, said Huyard. Members of the cast and crew are looking forward to presenting the children’s classic that Huyard believes will resonate with area families. “There are times when Anne or Marilla become frustrated, and we can see ourselves in that, he noted. “It’s lighthearted. It has really joyful moments, and it ends very sweetly. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla, encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick Lambert. The play is co-directed by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne coming to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. “ We love the story of this orphan girl who is so lonely and who learns to love and be loved, said Huyard. “That’s what we’re all about (at Cavod). We are all orphans until we are accepted into the biblical family. There is that beautiful undertone of going from a broken family to becoming a whole family unit (in this story). To do justice to the production’s large number of scenes, Cavod is installing a turntable

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will present a program on Wednesday, March 27, titled “Trolleys” by Herb Fisher. The program will be held at 7 p.m. in the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata. Fisher will speak about the trolley system that operated in the local area prior to World War II. A special focus of his talk will be the rerouting of the Conestoga Traction Company line running between Leola and Akron and on to Ephrata. The electric trolley was the main mode of transportation for the local residents traveling from place to place, including going to work, visiting relatives and taking a Sunday joy ride. After WWII, buses and then automobiles and superhighways took the place of trolleys. All that remains of the trolley system are a few tracks and the rail trails. Fisher has been collecting information and photographs on the local trolley companies for the past 12 years. He has a collection of approximately 8,500 photographs of the trolleys and trolley tracks. Admission is free and open to the public. For details, readers may call the historical society at 717-733-1616.
