Making Masks In Leola By Ann Mead Ash

Heather Marston is normally busy teaching 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds at Leola Nursery School at Conestoga Church of the Brethren. On March 13, when it was announced that the day care center and schools were closed due to the COVID19 crisis, Marston went home to hunker down with her two Conestoga Valley High School teenagers and her husband. It was not very long before the avid seamstress was looking for ways to lend her talents to aid to those facing the crisis on a daily basis. When a neighbor told Marston about the need for masks, Marston began looking at websites for medical mask designs. Marston knew she could not create N95-compliant masks, but she heard that cloth masks could still help. “(The cloth masks) will not stop the virus,” said Marston.

“But (wearers) are putting these over the top of their existing masks to increase the longevity of those.” Marston originally was giving her masks to two local nurses to distribute to those who need them. “There are people who are working in the hospital systems who are required to wear masks, but they are not on the front lines,” she noted, adding that there are other vocations and venues where masks are now being required, such as food warehouses. Since Gov. Wolf recommended wearing masks in public places as of April 3, Marston has had requests for masks from more than 30 individuals. She is prioritizing distribution with medical staff receiving masks first, followed by the elderly and immunocompromised, and then essential workers. Before Marston began making

“Our mission must go on,” said Stacie Blake, chief executive officer of the YWCA Lancaster. “We are excited to provide a positive opportunity for our community to persevere and unite together virtually to take a stand against racism.” As a virtual race, the event technically began on March 25 at midnight and will run through Saturday, April 25, at 11:59 p.m. Those wishing to take part in the event are asked to run or walk 3.1 miles on a treadmill, trail, track, or road anytime before 11:59 p.m. on April 25. Those who complete the event will earn a commemorative T-shirt and See Race Against Racism pg 5

In response to COVID-19 restrictions, runners who choose to participate in the Race Against Racism sponsored by the YWCA Lancaster may do so virtually. Participants may complete the 5K distance at any time until 11:59 p.m. on April 25.

New Takes On Education By Leah Sintic

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the areas experiencing a massive adjustment is the education system. Public school, private school, student, teacher, parent - no one is exempt from the farreaching repercussions after a statewide mandate closed schools in mid-March. School administrative teams across Lancaster County have had to adjust quickly, all while keeping the safety of students and the community at the forefront of their decisions. School districts countywide have ramped up their online communication portals, offering

Organization Uses Civil Engineering To Impact Eternity “It will stretch you and sometimes make you uncomfortable, but it will be a life-changing experience,” shared Jim Boyer, speaking about mission work with Friends In Action (FIA), such as his recent short-term trip to the Pacific island country of Vanuatu. Boyer, who is currently the president and managing principal at David Miller/Associates Inc. in Lancaster, has more than 30 years of engineering experience. With headquarters in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before.

Race Against Racism Goes Virtual The Race Against Racism, a fundraiser of the YWCA Lancaster that is believed to be the longestrunning consecutive race against racism in the country, announced on March 20 that the event will transition to a virtual race for 2020. The change is in alignment with guidelines from CDC health and government officials outlined to deal with the COVID-19 crisis and to prioritize the health and safety of runners and others.

have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk.” The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. The finished products are then delivered to senior communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities,” explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students.” For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.

needs of their families.” The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more,” explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. I’m hopeful we will also be able to use a video conferencing program so that I can interact with my students in a live setting.” Conestoga Valley (CV) schools also enacted measures to move toward online delivery, directing faculty to connect with families via applications such as Zoom, a virtual conferencing application, and establishing office hours to keep communication flowing. Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this time of crisis.” “Neither our teachers nor our students signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality,” Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be

critical updates. While the game plan moving forward varies by educational institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brickand-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students,” which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “We feel it is important to challenge our students to keep moving academically,” explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships.” Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the event the school closure mandate is lifted, MCCS faculty members are prepared to complete the duration of the year via the new remote delivery if necessary. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) also went live with its online format on March 23, providing assigned coursework for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in five core courses along with optional enrichment activities. The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a high-quality academic experience even during this time of crisis.” The statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the

providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs.” In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for inhome technology. Three of Bethany Eaby’s four children attend school in the Manheim Township School District. With the closure of schools in March, suddenly her fifthgrade, third-grade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect,” elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects, and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful,” she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide

explained Boyer. “As the students developed the preliminary designs, we quickly realized that more detailed topographic survey information was needed to determine the feasibility of the project and to eventually develop the final designs.” The project was launched in response to the villagers and local pastors who reached out to FIA leaders about the severe hardships caused by water scarcity in their region. “Our children and people are sick due to disease and sanitation issues from water shortages, especially in the dry season,” reported Manuel, a nurse practitioner who serves a population of almost 2,344 villagers in more than 500 households spanning 50 to 60 villages. The top three health issues in Vanuatu are water-related: scabies, skin diseases, and malaria. Just to have enough drinking water for one day, the villagers must walk an hour each way to catch water in containers that often previously held kerosene or oil. Boyer and his fellow volunteers have prepared the way for future workers to continue this life-changing WASH (Water And Sanitation Health) initiative. FIA has secured a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the demands of thousands of villagers nearby. Over the course of the next five years, more volunteer teams will work to run 16 miles of gravityfed piping from the source to 30 villages, three schools, and two clinics below, providing clean water to more than 3,500 people. “There is so much value in the work that FIA does,” stated Boyer. “It’s more difficult for people to understand the message of Christ if they are without basic needs. But if those needs can be practically met, it opens a lot of doors.” FIA is currently recruiting more volunteers for trips to Vanuatu planned in June and August. Laborers are needed to continue progress on a base camp being constructed to house future teams working on the water projects as well as a projected youth and Bible conference center that will be used to equip indigenous leaders to take the Gospel into neighboring villages. “Past teams have made great progress repairing and repainting machinery, constructing cabins

and bunk rooms, and beginning work on a kitchen/dining building,” relayed Brosey, “but we are still in need of individuals to help with plumbing, painting, construction of kitchen cabinets, and laying of tile floors, plus electrical wiring of the kitchen/dining building.” In addition, two or three people are needed for two weeks each in August to run a bulldozer, a trackhoe, and a skid steer to construct a

recalled a sling she made of soft flannel before her daughter was born. “I am cutting that up to make masks with, said Marston, who also decided to use a flannel sheet that did not fit any of her beds. Each mask includes one layer of flannel, which goes against the face, and one layer of cotton. To secure the mask, Marston first thought of using elastic or bias tape, but she had neither. She put out the word to friends that she needed bias tape, and a friend she attended high school with donated two spools, dropping them on Marston’s porch. Each spool held 125 yards of red bias tape. On March 19, local business owner Gina Dissinger created a Facebook group, Essential Businesses Open in New Holland During Crisis. On March 22, Marston posted a photo of the masks she was making to the group page with a message to other sewers who might want to make masks. She noted that she would pick up masks or they could be dropped on her porch, or she would meet sewers in the parking lot at Lickity Split in New Holland. “I am hoping to collect as many as I can, wrote Marston, noting that masks would be donated to local hospitals. Since then, she has been working with her friend Dianne Miller

to create the masks. She thanked area resident Robin Timpson for donating masks that will be sent to a physical therapy center supporting an elderly population and to a midwife who is in need of masks for herself and clients. Marston and her friends have made and donated about 300 masks as of early April, and they are still sewing. She has recently been contacted by small businesses in food delivery requesting masks for employees. Recently, Marston began working on a second similar project. “I talked to a hospital administrator, and she would like 200 headbands with buttons, Marston said in a message. The headbands allow health care personnel to keep masks on for an extended period without ear discomfort because the elastic is held in place by the buttons on the headbands rather than going around the ears. “I have given materials to five families to cut out masks or headbands, and I have two families that will be sewing buttons, Marston reported. Marston invites those who would like to make masks or headbands and have questions to email her at hlk1230@aol.com or search for her name on Facebook. She is now accepting donations for the masks to enable sewers to purchase supplies.

Since Humanity Fest cannot be held this year, organizers hope that virtual racers will encourage each other by posting photos and videos experiences on social media. They may search for “Race Against Racism” on Facebook and @RARLancaster on Instagram. People should utilize the hashtags #RARLancaster and #VirtualRace. “We can’t wait to see your creative videos and photos of how you are running your race,” said Blake. The YWCA is planning to hold a community celebration on a date that has not been determined. Participants in the virtual race will be able to pick up their race swag at that event. Funds raised by the event are used to address racism issues, through efforts such as the YWCA Lancaster’s Social Justice and Advocacy programs, as well as supporting those who seek

The Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) benefit golf outing has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. The golf committee has postponed the event out of the concern for clients, residents, staff, and a community of supporters, For those who have already committed as sponsors or have registered to golf in the event, originally scheduled for Friday, June 5, reservations will be transferred to July 24. The needs of Landis ADS clients and its families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Although ADS clients are staying safe by staying home, this puts tremendous pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. It is important to be prepared for their return when Landis ADS is permitted to open. The registration deadline for sponsors and golfers is Friday, July 10. For more information about the event, readers may visit https://landisadultday.org/golf/ or contact Amy Henriques at 717-381-3584. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registration or sponsorship as a charitable donation. Those who prefer that their contribution be handled differently may email Henriques at ahenriques@landis.org. All eligible sponsors are listed on the website, and their ads will be in the golf booklet. The commitment deadline for all sponsorships is now July 10 in order to be included in the golf booklet.

reusable water bottle. The Kids’ Fun Run, for children age 12 and under, will also be held. Youngsters are asked to participate in a virtual 100-yard dash to earn a bandanna and ribbon. Adults and children who wish to participate are asked to register at https://ywcalancaster.org/race againstracism/ and download a virtual race bib. Those who had already registered for the race will be automatically transitioned to the virtual race. There is a discount for those age 14 and under who run, and the fee for the Kids’ Fun Run is nominal. The race encourages team participation, and there is a special link at the site for virtual race registration for team captains. The site suggests those wishing to form teams invite employees, friends, and family. Awards will be given out to the largest teams representing a number of categories, including place of worship and large and small businesses. Normally, the race, which

Companies Partner To Provide Equipment Safety Training A partnership between JLG Industries Inc. and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has resulted in enhanced future equipment training at the ABC Keystone Chapter with the delivery of three pieces of equipment to the chapter training facility in Manheim on March 5. The equipment includes a rough terrain forklift, a 1930ES scissors lift and a E300AJP boom lift. JLG Industries Inc. and ABC National formed a strategic partnership in 2018 to help solve industry challenges with worldclass education, training and equipment solutions. As part of this partnership, ABC Keystone member companies and chapter employees have provided user feedback to JLG Industries through time spent evaluating and testing equipment at the JLG facility in McConnellsburg. In 2019, ABC Keystone’s director of safety services, Kevin B. Keith, became the first JLG equipment-trained instructor across ABC’s 69 chapters. With the upcoming American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 92.20 suite of changes, the unique certification that Keith holds allows ABC Keystone to provide better training and service to its members and employees.

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other customers entering. Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to respect the purpose of the early opening. Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all in-store pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are

immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct parking spaces at their local store. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the pharmacy. Once the customer arrives at the store, they call the pharmacy regarding their prescription pickup. A pharmacy team member will then deliver the prescriptions to the customer’s vehicle, verifying the customer’s information while having them sign in order to receive. For senior customers who do not wish to come into the store, The Giant Company is now offering UPS mailing of prescriptions. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the local Giant or Martin’s pharmacy. The prescription will arrive in two business days and there will be no shipping charge at this time. The Giant Company continues to offer delivery and pickup through Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. Available slots are limited, and the company is working to expand capacity. Currently, only contactless deliveries are available to all customers in all areas until further notice. Contactless delivery means that the driver will practice social distancing during the delivery process. For more information on the Giant Company’s efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, readers may visit https://giant foodstores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.

Sheetz recently announced a new SHcan and Go! feature allowing customers to scan and pay for convenience items through the Sheetz app. Now available at all 600 Sheetz locations, this new feature minimizes interaction in the checkout process in support of social distancing recommendations. The SHcan and Go! feature activates through the Sheetz app when in-store and can be used for convenience items such as beverages and snacks. It is not available for gas, age-restricted items requiring proof of identification, or Sheetz’s Made-to-Order food and Sheetz Brothers coffee items. Madeto-Order and Sheetz Brothers coffee items can continue to be ordered and purchased separately through the app or online 24/7. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Sheetz has instituted several changes including suspending self-serve coffee, self-serve fountain beverages, fresh brewed tea, frozen beverages and milkshakes as well as self-serve bakery items. Sheetz is also encouraging social distancing and has implemented enhanced routine daily cleaning procedures with a focus on high-touch surface areas such as gas pumps, order points, counter tops, checkout lines and door handles. Sheetz is also re-training all employees on proper hand washing and hygiene and reinforcing these procedures.
