The 2018 Steps to Success Early Learning Center Spring Carnival in Leola raised nearly $1,000 for the organization. This year, organizer Tracie Hanson, assistant and curriculum director at Steps to Success, is hoping to surpass that goal. “Funds raised by the carnival will be used to purchase classroom supplies,” said Hanson. The free spring carnival will be held at Steps to Success, 56 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to a silent auction, the event will feature face painting, entertainment, a bounce house, and carnival-style games. Food items will be available for purchase, as well. A focus of the event will be games for children to enjoy. “We will have everything from skill games to fish pond games,” said Hanson, who noted that obstacle courses, face painting, and entertainment suitable

Hungry attendees will have opportunities to buy refreshments, including hot dogs, chips, cookies, baked goods, and beverages. According to Hanson, a number of area businesses have donated items for the silent auction. Experiences that will be auctioned will include Christian theater tickets, dinner theater tickets, and gift cards. “We have several donations from throughout the county,” said Hanson. “They’re still coming in.” Hanson hopes to have at least 60 items up for bids in the silent auction, which will open at 10 a.m. Winners will be announced at 12:45 p.m. Steps to Success provides preschool and day care services in addition to

Golfers Invited To Take A Swing Against Homelessness Cavod Theatre EPC To Host Annual Outing By Kaylee Rex
When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS).
•Mother’s Day Truck Convoy to benefit Make-A-Wish at Burle Business Park in Lancaster: Sunday, May 12 York County •Special Olympics – York County’s spring games at the Grumbacher Center at York College: Saturday, May 4 •44th annual Olde York Street Fair in Continental Square, York: Sunday, May 12
The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness
among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both See Golf Outing pg 7
Sherry (left) received a Certificate of Achievement after graduating from Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services’ two-year program. She was congratulated by Christy Stoltzfus, the family resource coordinator who worked with her.

Lacrosse Team Battles Ephrata, Shows Improvment by Leah Sintic
Buckskin lacrosse faced off against Ephrata for the second time this season in last Tuesday’s showdown, and although the Mountaineers once again managed to edge ahead in the 15-9 win, the CV squad displayed plenty of growth. Having only managed to slip in two goals against Ephrata in their first meeting (17-2), this recent clash showed a much more prepared Buckskin club, diversifying their offense with six different attackers netting goals. “Our team has grown and changed since we played them last,” commended head coach Cameron Tough. Lead scorer Charles Braught notched a hat trick, bringing his mid-season total to an impressive 28. Braught wasn’t alone on the front line as Logan Weaver and Gage
McClune each came through with two goals, while Ryan Querry and Will Stone added one apiece. Both keepers, Andrew Roland for CV, and Brock Boyer for Ephrata, registered nine saves, but the Mountaineers outshot the Bucks, 24-18, giving themselves more opportunities for success. VOLLEYBALL Back-to-back wins to open last week gave the CV boys volleyball club a big momentum boost, taking down both Manheim Township and Wilson in 3-0 sweeps. In Tuesday’s win over Township, the Buckskins’ strong serving helped them run away with the contest from the first set (25-13, 25-11, 25-16). Jeremiah Pha, Tanner Shertzer, and Dominic Brabant each fired two aces over the net in the course of the match, never allowing Township to fully gain their defensive footing.
T. Shertzer also dished out 21 assists, and brother, Sawyer Shertzer, was ready to capitalize with 13 kills in the decisive victory. “Team on-court communication is better, and we are making smarter, quick decisions on plays,” noted head coach Blake Youndt of the teams’ continued growth. Against Wilson on Monday, the set scores were much closer, but CV managed to pull off three consecutive wins (25-18, 25-23, 25-23). Pha again dished a pair of aces, S. Shertzer led in kills (14), and T. Shertzer had 32 assists. Defensively, the Bucks were tested by Wilson’s fight in the final two sets, but a pair of blocks from Robbie Krasinski as well as 16 digs from Carlos Barbosa helped squelch the comeback threat. “They’re starting to hold their posture higher during matches and exude more
confidence in themselves and one another. This week we’ve played our best, and look to be hitting stride,” summarized Youndt. With these two victories, the Bucks have leveled both their league record at 3-3, as well as their overall record at 4-4. The young squad now turns their attention to the latter half of the season excited to display their improvement. TRACK AND FIELD The Buckskin squads participated in last week’s Black Knight Invitational at Hempfield, and it turned out to be a record-breaking occasion, thanks to Jane Livingston’s hurdles performances. Livingstone flew ahead of the competition in the 100 hurdle event, clocking a 13.62 to set the all-time Lancaster-Lebanon League record as well as hold the current PA #1 and US #6 time. Livingston complimented that performance with 300 hurdles win (43.77), another current number one time in the state and second quickest in the L-L league all-time records. “Jane focuses on improving her hurdling technique and speed, trying
to focus on only the things that she is in control of,” explained girls track coach Nick Loreto. “Her goal is to always improve her times and run the best races she can on a given day. If a record is broken, it is a nice bonus, but her focus is the same as everyone
on the team-and that is to improve in her events.” Sarah Castronova crossed third in the 400 (58.97), and Dana Wentz placed fourth in the 100 (12.65) and seventh in the 200 (26.43), to represent CV in the sprinting events.

Monday, the visiting Tornados started and ended with four-run innings giving them the initial and final leads of the contest, but CV battled, producing a five-run frame in the third to hold a temporary 7-4 advantage. The teams were knotted up at eight heading into their final at bats, but unfortunately for the Bucks, the Tornados went on a surge, crossing four runs and the Bucks were unable to retaliate in kind. Relief pitcher Gavin Horning was saddled with the loss, pitching the final inning, striking out one and walking two.

last week, coming up short against both Penn Manor and McCaskey. Wednesday the Bucks hosted the Comets and succumbed to a 13-2 loss after five innings. Penn Manor opened the game with back-to-back strong at bats to jump ahead, 6-0. CV managed to respond with a run registered in both the third and fourth, but a Comet hitting surge in the fifth led to seven more runs and an early end to the contest. Keegan Martin took the loss on the hill, lasting two innings, striking out three, and walking five. In a 12-9 loss to McCaskey last

Myles Naylor of York (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) before taking a loss to flight winners AJ Krasley/Seth Markley of Lower Dauphin. Buckskin duo, Grady Ray and Jesse Hardin, fought for a comeback win in their consolation game against Jack Ramirez and Darsh Wagh of Wilson (0-6, 6-4, 14-12). On Wednesday the Bucks fell to Elizabethtown 6-1, but a number three doubles win from Nolan High and Devin Gerety (8-3) allowed CV to evade the shutout. Monday night, the club lost a close bout to Penn Manor 4-3. Hoy had another big day for the team, winning his singles match (7-5, 6-1) as well as doubles along with Owen Horst (8-3). Luca Puleo pulled in the third CV point of the match with his 6-2, 6-1 singles victory. SOFTBALL Only two runs were scored against the Lady Bucks softball squad last week, but it was enough to yield split outcomes in their two contests. After battling through 6.5 scoreless innings on Wednesday night, Penn Manor took down the Lady Bucks with a single run scored in the bottom of the seventh, when the Comets number three hitter, Emily Riggs, drove in the run with a single. Montana Habecker was in the circle for the loss, striking out one and walking two. On Monday, CV topped McCaskey, 12-1, and did most of their damage in the second and sixth innings; crossing five runs in each at bat, and gathering 11 hits. “This was a total team win. We had an outstanding game, and everyone had a hand in our offense,” commented head coach Larry Minney. Jacquelyn McBride’s bat certainly propelled the team effort in a 3-4 showing that included a triple and four RBIs, and Lexi Mellinger had a similar day going 3-4 with a pair of RBIs. The offense continued to click as as the team batted around; Olivia Mellinger and Michele Lopez each drove in a pair of runs, Laken Smith added an RBI, and Kahlan Ciardullo chipped in with a 2-4 day. Sophomore Lexi Weitzel earned the win, striking out four McCaskey batters and walking none, backed by a solid teamwide defensive effort with zero errors. “Lexi pitched a great game and also made good defensive plays,” praised Minney. “We turned two double plays, and this looked like the CV team I know we can be.” GIRLS LACROSSE In last Monday’s 22-6 home loss to Hempfield, the Knights got ahead early, working their way into a 14-5 lead after the first half. Allyson Andrews and Madison Buckley put in two goals apiece for CV, while Abigail Morley and Hayley Schwartz supplied one each in the loss. The previous Friday, April 12, it was CV that dominated the field in a 13-0 takedown of Cedar Cliff. Morley led in scoring with four goals and three assists, and Hannah Chadwick was another offensive force, notching a hat trick while lining up five assists. Andrews picked up three goals, Madison Buckley added two, and Schwartz chipped in one. Cassandra Malles and Sydney Weaver each supplied an assist in the diversified attack. CV keeper Anna Kollbotn scooped up eight saves to preserve the shutout. BASEBALL initial round in number one doubles The baseball team had a rough go with a win over Jason Nardo and
in the high jump to secure third place. Emily Castronova posted a 2:23.72 in the 800 good enough for fourth, and Aviona Saunders produced the fifth farthest long jump with a 16-7.5. For the boys, Joe Cardina had a strong showing with the day’s secondbest high jump (6-4), a fourth-place triple jump (43-0), and a sixth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (45.77). Nate Grucelski’s time of 1:56.99 in the 800 placed him in fourth, Loago Snavely crossed seventh in the 300 hurdles (41.65), and Obed Bamungwa put up a 20-7 long jump to finish in seventh. On Tuesday, the track teams went head-to-head with Warwick and took a collective loss, 89-61, for the girls, and 118-31, for the boys. As expected, Livingston owned the hurdle events, clocking a 14.4 in the 100, and 44.0 in the 300. Destiny Ellerbe continues to grab CV points in the throwing events, taking first in the shot put (33-4) as well as the discus (83-8.75). “We have seen an improved focus with Destiny this season, specifically in how she prepares and practices, and this is shown in her improvement in all three throws,” Loreto credited the sophomore. Saunders supplied the day’s best long jump (16-6), and Jess Teleguz won pole vault clearing 7-9. For the boys, Warwick dominated most events but Bamungwa was a highlight for CV claiming top marks in both the 300 hurdles (42.4), and the long jump (22-7). TENNIS After hosting the 2019 Buckskin Invitational last weekend, the CV squad tied with Wilson for a secondplace finish, just behind Lower Dauphin, and ahead of Central York. Senior Matthew Hoy earned AllTournament recognition while leading the CV rackets in the top flight. Hoy collected points in his win over Lower Dauphin’s David Murphy (6-3, 6-1) before heading to the finals for a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Sashank Sridrarl of Wilson to clinch the flight. “Matthew performed well, competing shot for shot, and exceeded my expectations,” elaborated head coach Dale Gregg. “He responded well to coaching and made adjustments throughout the day.” Other Buckskin highlights included a trip to the finals at number five singles for Luke Taylor, who overcame Hunter Scott of Central York before falling to Mark Walsh of Lower Dauphin (6-1, 6-0). Logan Mahler and Jason Schlegelmilch advanced beyond their
