Pitching in to clean up
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Years ago, Faith Church adopted the section of Route 340 that runs in front of its location at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, through PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program. At some point, the church’s involvement in the program was not renewed, but about four years ago, church member Michelle Shertzer made the effort to get the church involved again. Shertzer was surprised to learn the section of Route 340 assigned to Faith Church was slightly different from the segment covered in the past.
The new section begins near the corner of Buckwalter Road and Old Philadelphia Pike and continues for 2 miles to Mill Creek, including both sides of the road. On Sunday, May 21, the church will hold its spring cleanup event, during which members and volunteers from the community will gather at the church and then pick up trash
along the route. Shertzer said that the activity will begin with a free lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the cleanup at 12:15 p.m. “We break into groups and section off (the area),” said Shertzer. “We park in one area and cross over and then come back.”
appropriately for the task and the weather.
According to Shertzer, PennDOT supplies all the black plastic bags for trash, white plastic bags for recyclables, and gloves for the cleanup. PennDOT picks up the bags in front of the church after the activity is completed.
Members of the community are invited to just show up to help out with the cleanup. “The minimum age to participate is 8 years old, and children must be accompanied by an adult,” Shertzer shared. Generally, the cleanup takes about an hour. Volunteers are encouraged to dress
Pieces of trash that the crew has found generally include cigarette butts, expired credit cards, and the typical cups, cans, and wrappers. Once, however, a team member discovered a horseshoe near the Smoketown Turkey Hill. About 15 minutes later, a member of the Plain community approached asking if they had found one. “His horse had thrown a shoe,” remarked Shertzer. “What was the likelihood we would find it?” Another time, a passerby asked what they were doing and then brought back bottles of water for the whole crew. “(The cleanup) is a lot of fun,” said Shertzer.
Readers who have questions about the activity may email mfshertzer@yahoo.com or call 223-281-8204.
To build hope

On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, See CSC pg 5
Finding her calling in music
BY ANN MEAD ASH
About three years ago, Debbie Fisher of Gordonville was vacationing with friends. “We were sitting around talking about (the answer to the questions) ‘Are you doing what God called you to do? What’s deep inside you?’” recalled Debbie. “I was like, ‘Well, I am in roles I like. I am a mom, wife, business owner, but I am not really (in my calling).’”
Debbie is a mother of two daughters and the wife of Dave Fisher, with whom she owns a cabinet coating and ecommerce business, but her calling was in the field of musical
performance. “When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a professional musician,” said Debbie, who was involved in choirs, worship teams, and traveling musical groups as a child and young adult. After graduating from Lancaster Mennonite School in 1997, Debbie married Dave, and they traveled west, where they started businesses. “I shelved (music),” said Debbie. “‘Never too late’ is kind of my motto (now),” said Debbie, who is in her 40s.
“What’s holding you back (from pursuing music)?” Debbie’s friends asked her, and she did not know the answer. She prayed, “Lord, here I

am. I can sing and play guitar, but I have never written a song.” Debbie also took action, making contacts in the music industry through friends in Tennessee and joining songwriting groups on social media. Within five months, during the fall of 2021, she wrote a song and submitted it in hopes of taking part in a virtual training offered by two Grammy-winning songwriters in Nashville. Debbie’s song, “This Is Part of My Story” was selected from nearly 30 other entries, and she took part in the seminar.
In July 2022, Debbie went to Nashville to record three of her songs, which began getting airplay on Southern gospel stations in the South in October of that year. “I said, ‘Yes,’ and God swung the doors wide open,” said Debbie, who discovered the You, God’s Music Showcase competition on Facebook around that same time. “I submitted a video of me singing (‘This is Part of My Story’),’” said Debbie, who was notified within a day that she had been selected for the competition. Debbie explained that the contest
has four rounds, three of which are held online. The fourth round, which is live with judges, will be held in San Antonio, Texas, in July.
For each vote in the first online round, which began April 22 and will run through Sunday, May 7, a nominal donation is required. Debbie chose for her donations to go to the Outpouring Church in Manheim. Those who would like to watch the video of Debbie and vote for her may visit https://yougodsmusic.org /music-video/this-is-part-of -my-story-by-debbie-fisher.

butalso commemorated the founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.
Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit
Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family
of patient families,” he said.
Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.
John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility
keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”
County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.
Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”
Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said,

Miller’s Smorgasbord opened in 1929. Miller’s Smorgasbord fried chicken was recognized by Food & Wine Magazine as the best fried food in Pennsylvania in 2022. Plus, Miller’s offers a variety of desserts from chocolate pecan pie to cheesecake, which are baked daily at the Miller’s Bakery.

“The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”
The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.

Gabriel Chamber Ensemble to close concert series
Throughout the 2022-23 Arts & Culture season, The Trust Performing Arts Center has partnered with Lancaster International Piano Festival (LIPF) for a series of concerts. The third and final concert in the series is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in the Great Hall of The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, and will feature the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting high-quality performances of chamber music repertoire.
The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble consists of Simon Maurer and Dana Allaband on violin, Agnès Maurer on viola, Ai-Lin Hsieh on cello and Xun Pan on piano. Now in its 34th season in Schuylkill County, the ensemble offers a wide selection of chamber music masterpieces and features invited professional guest artists.
In addition, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble has initiated community and educational outreach programs to develop chamber music audiences and the musicians of the future. To further its mission, the ensemble created the Gabriel Youth Orchestra to provide an opportunity for middle and high school students from throughout the region to play in a professionally managed and conducted setting.
The first LIPF concert in the series, held in October, featured award-winning virtuosic prodigy Qianxiang “Daniel” Ma, a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School who is instructed by Pan, and the second concert, in February, showcased cellist Hai-Ye Ni in a joint performance with Pan. There are different ways to describe when a team follows a setback with another setback and none of them conjure good thoughts but that is where the CV softball team is currently. After dropping seven of their last eight games the Lady Buckskins sit at 5-8 overall and currently reside outside the 16-team District 3-5A playoff field.
The Lady ‘Bucks did manage to break up the run with a win on April 19th, but it proved to be a blip with Lampeter-Strasburg handing out a
loss on the 21st. The 7-2 setback went on Rhiannon Henry’s record with the senior hurler tallying six strikeouts while allowing just four earned runs. Brylee Bateson picked up the lone RBI for CV with a fifth inning single.
One day later the Lady Buckskins ended up on the wrong side of an 11-4 final with Governor Mifflin inflicting the damage. Henry took another loss despite allowing only three earned runs as eight CV errors tipped the scales to the Lady Mustangs side. Bateson covered the final two outs and was hit
with an unearned run of her own. Bateson, Bianca Henry, and Kaitlyn Humphreville totaled four hits and three RBI.
Conestoga Valley’s third loss in as many games was the most difficult with CV going hitless to give Ephrata the 1-0 win. Henry finished with five strikeouts and two walks but took the loss after a single CV error allowed an unearned run to cross.
The win on April 19th came over Lebanon with Conestoga Valley needing five innings to collect the 14-3 victory. Henry gave way to Bateson in the circle with the junior allowing four hits and three runs to go with five strikeouts and three walks. Alexa Freeburn drove in three runs on two hits while Henry, Isabella Rodriguez and Laila Smith all finished with two RBI.
TENNIS
In the case of most sports teams, the best way to finish a season is with a win. That is exactly what the boy’s tennis team did, even if it was a regular season finale, the Buckskins still clipped Penn Manor by a 6-1 final. Michael Horst, Fabian Heine, and Nolan Miller did half the work in singles action with all three posting a win. The trio also helped secure CV’s first team points with a sweep in doubles action where Horst teamed with Yuji Wenger, Heine with Boro Krstic, and Miller with Eli Lefever.
VOLLEYBALL
Shirk’s Bike Shop 15th Annual Spring Sale!
The boys’ volleyball team continues to walk the line, the playoff line. The Buckskins are 5-4 overall tucked just inside the District 3-3A playoff field as the season hits the home stretch.
One of those losses came on the 20th when a visit from Warwick resulted in a 3-1 loss where CV kept the Warriors from the sweep with a 25-23 game three win. That proved to delay the inevitable by one game with Warwick adding a 25-14 match sealing result to their 25-12 and 25-23 opening wins. Caron Hoover finished with 15 kills and Drew Hultstrand collected 30 assists. Rowan Aisenbrey added 14 digs.

Conestoga Valley rebounded nicely with a sweep of McCaskey on the 25th. Hultstrand fronted the 25-16, 2516 and 25-22 victory with 31 assists, 13 digs and two kills. Hoover added 13 kills to help the cause.
BASEBALL
A season of struggles continues for the baseball team with losses to LampeterStrasburg and Ephrata, outweighing a win over Lebanon to leave the Buckskins 4-9 on the year.
The win over Lebanon went down on the 19th with Brendan Bossert cruising to the 11-2 victory. The senior covered all seven innings, allowing just one hit and two earned runs to go with two strikeouts and four walks. Caden Miller and Evan Wilson each finished with four RBI, but Miller needed just one hit while Wilson used three.
The Buckskins tripped up on the 21st, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 5-1 final. Evan Lapp pushed CV’s lone run across with his first inning double while Owen Fisher took the loss. Fisher allowed just four hits and had seven strikeouts, but those five Pioneer runs proved too much.
Conestoga Valley dropped their April 24th showdown with Ephrata by an 11-0 final. Wilson, Lapp, and Brandon Hursh each had one single to cover the CV offense. Jude Thompson got the start and took the loss, allowing five
runs on eight hits over his five innings of work. Wilson covered the final two innings and was tagged for the final six Mountaineer runs. The pair combined for five strikeouts and six walks.
LACROSSE Winner, winner!! It may have taken 12 games, but the girls lacrosse team finally emerged victorious, topping Ephrata by a 10-9 final on the 24th. The Lady ‘Bucks jumped out to a 10-3 halftime lead and nearly saw the win slip away with six second half goals from the Lady Mountaineers shrinking the final down to one goal. Jamie Handwerger stopped seven shots to earn the win while Sophia Hess paced the offense with four goals. Alaina Culbert and Jordyn Hironimus netted two scores apiece while Rachel Tsai and Samantha Silvaggio tacked on one each.
A few days prior, on the 20th, CV absorbed a 21-3 loss to Penn Manor. This time 13 Handwerger saves were not enough with Hess, Silvaggio and Haley Givler scoring one time each.
Flipping to boys’ lacrosse, the Buckskins split the Penn Manor and Ephrata games with a win over the Comets on the 20th and a loss to the Mountaineers on the 24th.
Soren Stoltzfus tallied 11 saves in the 13-9 Penn Manor loss, adding another nine in the 14-8 win over Ephrata. Jeff Fisher totaled eight goals with six coming in the win
while Hunter Silvaggio scored three times in the win and twice in the loss. Noah Nolt added four goals and one assist over the two-game stretch while Tyson Zwaska went for three goals and two assists. Seth Frankford cleaned up the remaining two goals with both coming against the Comets.
TRACK
The drain of track’s dual meet season continued for the Buckskins on the 24th with a 95-55 loss for the girls and an 83-67 setback for the boys coming from a trip to Ephrata.
Aidan Zimmerman was the lone two-event winner on the boy’s side, topping both the javelin and discus fields. Zach Phy went solo with a 40.6 to win the 300H and took part in the victorious 400m relay along with Jayden Johnson, Colin Hoffner and Michael Jackson. Caleb Malari picked up the final win on the track with a 14.8 in the 110H. Ben Eberly in the triple jump and Meachey in the pole vault rounded out the event wins.
On the girl’s side it was Brooke Denlinger posting the double, taking both the 100H (15.6) and the 300H (49.4) while adding a leg of the winning 400m relay to her day.
Hallie Schnapf, Mae Linder,
and Alondra Ortiz joined Denlinger in the relay win. Katelyn Williams collected the final solo win, taking the javelin with a toss of 101-6.
Meagan Kime, Kylee Antrim, Seana Dougherty and Bellamarie Alston opened the meet with a win in the 3200m relay.

A long-standing tradition at OMPH School, the play depicts the last week of Jesus’ life, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. It is a tradition that helps to pre-
pare the school community for the coming of Holy Week. The activity is also intended to give the students an opportunity to consider what Jesus endured in order to bring people the Easter message of everlasting life.
