Long’s Park Concert Series To Highlight Well-Known Music By Ann Mead Ash

Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music everybody knows was key,” said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.” With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held in Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup.

Celtic band Réalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. This year, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will emphasize familiar tunes, with a tribute weekend scheduled in June. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the

founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is very engaging and will be great for the crowd,” said Deck.

The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,” according to Deck. See Long’s Park pg 2

FAMILY ADVENTURES

Lifetree Café, located at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will explore how to have family adventures on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. The program, titled “Low-Cost, No-Cost Adventures,” will feature a filmed interview with a family that regularly sets off on family adventures. Participants will get practical tips for having low-cost or no-cost adventures and explore the barriers to family adventures. Admission is free. For details, contact 717-473-9115 or ltclancaster@gmail.com.

According to Kate Lowry, a member of the Junior League of Lancaster, the organization has been looking for more ways to make a positive impact on the local community. “We did a community impact assessment about five years ago,” explained Lowry. “ We looked at challenges and issues, and we did an assessment of what the community needs and where the gaps are.” One result of that assessment is the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project. For the educational program, the group has entered into in partnership with J. E. Fritz Elementary School, The Stone Independent School, and the Lancaster Science Factory.

Stone Independent School students who are working with the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project include (from left) Philip, Sophia, Lily, and Kristen. The Junior League hopes to eventually put a similar system in each county school.

Living Ministries is preparing to open The Point @ Doneckers, which will be housed in the Doneckers Building in Ephrata and will include space for two churches, a youth center, several ministries, and businesses. The two churches, New Beginnings and The Living Room, are currently meeting in the building. Restoration is scheduled to be completed by June 2020.

will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The first concert of July will feature Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bring-someone-todance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28. The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more wellknown songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance

Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. More information about the Summer Concert Series may be found by visiting www.longs

Tremblay Exhibit To Include International Flair

New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) board member Wilbur Horning recently expressed how honored the society feels to have been blessed with more than 60 original works and pencil sketches by the late Myrtle Tremblay. “We consider it a compliment,” said Wilbur recently. NHAHS will display “The Unseen Works of Myrtle Tremblay” at its museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. Tremblay was known for her paintings of Lancaster County scenery, but many of the works that will be featured in the exhibit were completed in Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and elsewhere in South America prior to Tremblay’s move to New Holland. The technique used in these paintings is considered different from her later works. Tremblay was born Myrtle Cobb in Albion, Mich., in 1908. In her youth, she taught herself to draw by copying pictures. She attended Bay City Junior College, where her talent was recognized and she became art editor of the school yearbook. Tremblay earned a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University b e fo r e a t t e n d i n g t h e A r t

Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Center in New York. Beginning in 1937, she traveled to South America, Europe, and Asia, along with the northwest United States, painting scenes from her journey. It was during this period that the works that will be on display at NHAHS were created. In the 1940s, Tremblay sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Tremblay and her husband moved to New Holland in 1952 when her husband went to work for New Holland Machine as a photographer. Tremblay remained in New Holland until she died at the age of 102. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. NHAHS board member Don Horning noted that the museum received the donation of the artwork in July of 2017. Don asked members of the Lancaster art community to help evaluate the pieces. A decision was made to tell Tremblay’s story, including a written narrative, along with examples of her art. In October 2018, Win Reber, a retired art teacher known for

New Holland Area Historical Society representatives (from left) Don Horning, Wilbur Horning, and Lou Ann Miller display works of the late Myrtle Tremblay. The historical society museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, will host an exhibit of the artist’s works throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held at the museum on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. holding lectures on various artrelated topics for community groups, began helping to sort and catalog the art. “Win caught the vision, and we met, and he started working,” said Don, adding, “The goal is to preserve (Tremblay’s) memory.” Reber held a lecture on Tremblay in March and an abbreviated show of Tremblay’s international paintings was on display at Garden Spot Village in April. NHAHS is also grateful to Joyce Heberlein and Julia and Terry Swartz for their help in preserving Tremblay’s story.

Gala Will Benefit Alzheimer’s Association

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Say the word “gala” and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-double-digits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “We want it to be affordable,” said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too.” Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light” this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted. Guests may visit food stations, where they may partake of wings, empanadas, meatballs, charcuterie, a version of cheesesteaks, scones, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, and more. Some beverages will be included, and others may be purchased separately. Two Pints Shy, a power folk band that strives to be fun and energetic, will perform music for dancing. The group plays covers from six decades as well as some originals. A silent auction will run during the event. Trips to a themed amusement park in Florida, Las Vegas, and New York will be up for bids. Other items in the auction will include a firepit filled with goodies, themed baskets, certificates for lunches with government officials, golf and spa packages, a Penn State University-themed cornhole game, Lancaster Barnstormers swag and VIP packages, a pilot lesson, and more. Bids will also be accepted for hours of care provided by a licensed professional caregiving business. Additionally, there will be opportunities to enter a prize drawing. The proceeds from the Grand Purple Gala will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by way of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The tagline of the signature fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association is “lead

the way to Alzheimer’s first survivor.” Currently, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to www.alz.org. The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact,” Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease.” Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process,” Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Folks may buy tickets in advance for a discount by visiting https://717 events.ticketspice.com/the -grand-purple-gala, or they may pay full price at the door. For more information, readers may contact Frazier at 717-587-2209 or leeny626@aol.com or find “The Grand Purple Gala” on Facebook.

ics systems the league had seen, league member Pam Lazos contacted Mike Simpson, director of The Stone Independent School, in the summer of 2018. Simpson was interested, and he put Lazos in contact with Darby Schock, who teaches math and science at Stone. League members worked with Fritz and the Science Factory on a similar time table. In January 2019, the aquaponics tanks arrived. At Stone, freshman and sophomore students assembled the tanks and prepared the clay media and peat plugs before adding arugula, rainbow Swiss chard, and dill. Kristen, a student at The Stone Independent School, said that the class members working on the project feed the fish, test the water, and check on the plants. Water is tested for pH range, temperature, and contamination. Schock noted that the project lends itself to a variety of lessons. “We can teach photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle in the water, aquaculture, raising fish, (and) the environment the fish like,” he said. “There are chemistry elements to (testing the water).” At the Lancaster Science Factory, director Emily Landis noted that the tank was set up to cycle for about six weeks before seven active fish were added. “The most important thing about setting up is establishing the right balance,” said Landis. Lazos noted that the cycling creates a colony of beneficial bacteria. “The fish waste creates ammonia that is pumped up to the top and converted into nutrients the plant can intake. Nitrites are converted to nitrate to feed the plants.” At the top, rosemary, parsley, and tiny tomato plants are growing. Landis said that the 50,000 to 60,000 yearly Science Factory visitors will have the opportunity to read signage that

explains the cycle and all the chemistry behind it. “Our STEM educator, Angel Kilyan, is a chemist, so she would like to integrate the aquaponics in the ecology and chemistry programming,” said Landis. The Junior League of Lancaster is working toward putting an aquaponics tank in each Lancaster County school. Readers who would like to learn more about how the program could become part of their neighborhood school may contact the league at girlsinstem@jllancaster.org. The Junior League of Lancaster is an organization of women who promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and work to improve the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Jennie Groff spoke to Sacred Heart Middle School students about starting a business.

Sacred Heart Middle School students recently participated in the school’s first Youth Entrepreneur Summit, featuring Jennie Groff of the Lancaster Stroopie Company. The topic was “How to Start a Business.” Groff shared how her business started from an idea, which led to the formation of goals to fit in with the needs of the community. She said she is motivated by the refugee women who work for her company. These women are from Burma, Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the presentation, Groff encouraged the students to think about what they are passionate about and what

comes naturally. She shared that her entrepreneurial spirit was present when she was a young girl, as she created a business selling beverages to employees at her family’s dairy farm.

She also emphasized the importance of learning to work with others, which may be achieved by participating in group projects in school, and of developing strong writing skills. Sacred Heart Middle School plans to host a Youth Entrepreneur Summit each month.

Lady Bucks Lax Evens Record at 8-8 by Leah Sintic

Team and personal triumphs were on display in girls lacrosse last week and a pair of CV wins boosted the Lady Bucks record to 8-8, leaving the squad hoping a strong end of season push will land them into the post-season mix. Thursday night held a 13-1 victory over non-league opponent CD East. After a relatively quiet first half, the

Buckskins were up 3-0, but the team caught fire for a 10-1 second half. Abigail Morley lit up the offensive surge, netting six goals, while supporting performances from Taylor Zimmerman (2 goals, 4 assists) and Hannah Chadwick (2, 3) balanced the attack. Madison Buckley, Hayley Schwartz, and Aubrey Lester each scored once. On Monday the Lady Bucks registered a victory in their final league showdown,

overcoming Penn Manor, 16-9. “We played a complete game as a team,” celebrated head coach Mike Chadwick. “Our defense stopped their main player which allowed us to put pressure on others and create turnovers.” The Bucks and Comets showed similar aggressiveness on the front line with CV barely outshooting Manor 22-21, but CV keeper, Anna Kollbotn came through in a big way for Conestoga, snatching up 12 saves to squelch more than half of the Comets attempts. Transitioning the ball to the other end of the field was another strength the club has been honing. “We cleared the ball extremely well, which allowed us to create scoring opportunities,” elaborated Chadwick. Ready to capitalize on those opportunities was Allyson Andrews, H. Chadwick, and Morley each notching four goals in the victory. Their scoring success caused both H. Chadwick and Morley to breach the 100-career goal milestone during the contest, along with Andrews who reached the benchmark the previous week. “We played with patience and

reduced forced passes; this allowed us to create mismatches and get high percentage shots,” Chadwick praised his front line. Senior influence has been strong with this year’s seven seniors filling roles as first-year players, team manager, and seasoned veterans. “Allyson Andrews, Hannah Chadwick, Lauryn Hall, and Natalie Kiel have contributed so much to the turn around of this program,” explained Chadwick noting their off-season efforts. “Reese Lapp and Anna Kollbotn played for the first time and each made a significant impact on our team and results, and our manager, Ashley Fidler, has been fantastic handling our scorebook and other details,” he added. Despite just one year on the Buckskin squad, Kollbotn has over 100 saves to her credit. “This is a special senior class. I know each will go onto great things in the next chapter of their lives,” summarized Chadwick. BASEBALL Last week, CV baseball battled through three disappointments before their efforts were rewarded

with a win. In the mix during every contest, but just not quite able to finish with the lead, the Bucks took losses from Solanco (6-4), Elizabethtown (5-3), and Lampeter-Strasburg (10-3), but stuck with it to come from behind in Thursday evening’s 7-6 win over Lebanon. All signs seemed to be pointing in favor of Lebanon after four frames, and the Bucks found themselves down 6-1, but a massive team effort in the fifth plated five runs to level the score. From there it was a united defense and one more run that clinched the game. Nathan Scheid and Carson Crouse

shared the mound striking out a combined 11 batters, they were both effective on offense as well. Crouse suppled two hits and Scheid was responsible for two RBIs. Keegan Martin also picked up a pair of hits. With nine seniors slated to graduate this year, coach Jeffrey Craig reflects back on the four-year progression of these athletes pointing out their growth in both skill and character, culminating in a bittersweet point where one chapter closes and another begins. “One part is happy to see them continue on their life’s journey, while the other part is sad that I won’t have the opportunity to interact with them on a daily basis,” Craig explained of

took a moment at the meet to honor the achievements of the class. “This senior class has been the backbone of the team for the last few years, and I have really enjoyed coaching them,” credited coach Nick Loreto. “They will be hard to replace a n d definitely will be missed.” SOFTBALL The Lady Bucks pulled out an exhilarating win at Elizabethtown last week bookended by losses to Lampeter-Strasburg (15-0) and Solanco (9-6). Tuesday’s 8-6 triumph at Elizabethtown was late game thriller for CV. Etown scored first, but CV pushed three runs across in the seventh to take the lead, 3-1. The Bears knotted things up in their subsequent at bat propelling the game into additional innings. Five consecutive hits in the eighth, including a triple from Lexi Mellinger, produced five more CV runs, all while facing two outs. Though the Bears rallied to plate three in response, the CV defense managed to find three outs before the Bears could make up the ground. “Lexi is one of my most consistent hitters,” head coach Larry Minney said of the three-year all-star and senior. Monday’s 6-4 loss to Solanco might

not have been a win, but still displayed a unified Buckskin effort and included a time to honor the senior team members. “This was one of the better games we played this year,” noted Minney. “Everyone on the team played well and there was no one player,” he added, a fitting way to describe the contest, as he pointed out the leadership, hard work, and self-sacrificing examples set by the team’s seven graduating athletes. BOYS’ LACROSSE CV boys’ lacrosse split results in their final two league matches of the season, falling 16-6 to Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic on Thursday, but claiming a 17-4 victory over Garden Spot two days before. The exciting win over Garden Spot thrilled their home crowd and paid homage to their senior players at the same time. Ryan Querry’s five goals paced the offensive blitz, followed by four from Steven Emerson, two from Will Stone and Gage McClune, and one apiece from Zach Fisher, Charles Braught, Daniel Ackiewicz, and Conrad Dillman. Goalkeeping responsibilities were shared by Andrew Roland (eight saves) and CJ Ballard (four saves).

With 10 seniors graduating this year, their absence will be felt, but their legacy will continue. “Our seniors have invested a lot into our program,” stated head coach Cameron Tough. “My hope is that the example that they set will be followed by the underclassmen. I’m very proud of each senior on our team.” TENNIS Buckskin tennis sent six individuals to represent at the L-L Tennis Championships last week, where doubles pair Owen Horst and Matthew Hoy produced the best run making it to match point in a second round super tiebreaker against Cocalico, before falling 1-6, 6-3, 11-9. Donegal opponents proved to be formidable in singles action where Hoy, Luca Puleo and Tegan Lapp all battled hard but fell in straight sets. As the season draws to a close, the team will say goodbye to four influential senior members; Steven Diaz, Devin Gerety, Hoy, and Lapp. “The group of seniors has shown great leadership and guidance for the team,” credited head coach Dale Gregg. “They set a positive sportsmanship attitude that became contagious throughout the team, and they will be missed next season.”

the conflicting emotions saying goodbye to the group. “They have grown in every facet of the game, and they have also grown into fine young men,” he continued. “They are willing to volunteer at school and in the community, and they have shown tremendous character fighting through adversity, never quitting.” VOLLEYBALL Buckskin volleyball tore up the court last week, blanking back-toback competitors Reading and JP McCaskey. Early in the season, the squad faced several setbacks, but hard work and determination have paid big dividends as the team has turned the season around. “We are striving every day to learn from those experiences and to better ourselves as individuals on the court and to combine into a complete team,” reflected head coach Blake Youndt. On Tuesday, the team took down McCaskey (25-11, 25-18, 25-15), never allowing the Tornados to gain their footing. Robbie Krasinski delivered four aces to a scrambling McCaskey defense. Shertzer brothers Tanner and Sawyer teamed up to compliment the attack with Tanner putting up 27 assists, most often completed by Sawyer’s 14 kills. Carlos Barbosa anchored the defense with 15 digs and Jeremiah Pha, Jayden Rice, and T. Shertzer each produced a block in the team effort. The previous night it was Reading who met their demise in three quick sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-19). T. Shertzer was good for 23 assists in addition to three aces, S. Sawyer powered 10 kills, Barbosa 13 digs, and Pha had a pair of blocks. TRACK The Lady Bucks dominated almost every category in last Monday’s 93-56 track and field win over McCaskey, improving their dual meet record to 4-1. Jordyn Hock topped two sprints clocking 12.2 in the 100m, and 25.3 in the 200m. Sarah Castronova claimed the final sprint with a 59.6 in the 400m. Jane Livingston took care of the hurdles with 13.9 in the 100m, and 44.5 in the 300m, and Aviona Saunders also won two events with her 17-5.5 long jump and 36-6.5 triple jump. More first place points flooded in with Alisan Dodd’s 5-1 high jump, Marianna Dariychuk’s 87-11 javelin, and Jess Teleguz’ 8-6 pole vault. CV also claimed two relay events with the foursome of Castronova, Livingston, Hock, and Dana Wentz for a 48.6 in the 4x100 and a four-minute flat 4x400. The boys fell by a final count of 88-62, but picked up a slew of points in the jumps led by Joe Cardina’s wins in high (6-2) and triple (43-2.5). Obed Bamungwa’s 20-9 long jump was good enough for second. CV went one and two in the pole vault thanks to Kyle Funck’s 9-6 success, followed by Tyler Yutz’ 8-6. Distance runner Nate Grucelski pulled in additional points with the fastest 1600 of the day, a 4:23.1, and Josh Mathiot produced the best shotput of the day at 43-1.5. Track and field will graduate 11 girls and eight boys this spring, and

Living Ministries from pg 1 executive director David Knowles. Under the umbrella will be New Beginnings Church, an organization with roots in Akron, which has been meeting at the Doneckers Building under different leadership for about five years. “They were an existing church renting this space,” said Knowles. Meanwhile, Living Ministries was looking for a permanent home that was centrally located for the Friday Night Skate and a church called The Living Room. “We found this building,” recalled Knowles, who shared that the ministry purchased the building at what he called “a phenomenal price” in April 2018. Since then, Knowles, who became lead pastor of New Beginnings in September 2018, has been working with associate

pastors Brad Vater and Nelson Sepulveda, along with church members, to renovate the building. New Beginnings Church, which Knowles said observes a more traditional style of worship, currently meets in the building on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. for coffee with a service at 10 a.m. Living Ministries, which was founded by Knowles, grew out of a youth outreach called the Friday Night Skate. “We had been going from parking lot to parking lot at churches and building skate park ramps for youths to use,” recalled Knowles. The Friday Night Skate is currently meeting monthly in Ephrata, but the gathering will meet on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. in a designated area of The Point when the building is completed.

The Living Room is the second church that meets at The Point @ Doneckers. The Living Room developed when Knowles and his associates were searching for a church setting for youths who frequented the Friday Night Skate and their parents. “The Living Room is a nontraditional church setting that meets on Monday evening,” said Knowles. The service begins with supper at 6:30 p.m., followed by worship. “It’s very conversational,” he said. “We move the chairs and put them in circles, and we go through questions.” The two churches and the youth outreach will be the anchors for The Point @ Doneckers, but Knowles and company have much more planned for the site. “Half will be businesses, and half will be ministries,” explained Knowles, who noted that TNT Ministries and The Refuge, an addiction recovery ministry, will have offices in the building. Businesses will include a dance company, a retail store of handcrafted items, a café, and a children’s play space. Living Ministries hopes to have the building completed and all the tenants moved in by June 1, 2020, but New Beginnings and The Living Room are already meeting in the downstairs space and some of the business owners hope to have their enterprises in the building soon. Bortzel noted that adding running water in some of the classrooms is on the list of future changes. Individual cubbies will also be installed in the hallways to help prevent the spread of germs. This project is being completed with the help of members of the Garden Spot Village woodworkers group. Funding for the project is being provided by the Community Church at Garden Spot Village. Before the new cubbies are installed, however, walls and flooring in that area will need to be replaced.

credit hours in December 2018. According to NHELC assistant director Jen Morales, the center was required to make a number of changes to qualify for STARS 3. Policies, training for the staff, and paperwork were all completed with the help of a coach from the Keystone Stars program. Room assessment was an important part of the effort. “We had to look at what was in the classroom and how it was used and how the teachers interacted with the students,” said Morales, who noted that science and math equipment, furniture, ethnically diverse dolls, and wall art that depicted a variety of cultures, ages, and families were all purchased. One of the largest projects was separating the playground into dedicated areas and purchasing new equipment. “We redid our entire playground to have separate areas for children,” said Morales, who explained that the areas are divided by age with individual sections for infants, toddlers, prekindergartenage children, and school-age students. One area where NHELC shone was in the center’s openness to children with special needs. “(Keystone Stars was) impressed by our program for children with varying needs,” said Bortzel. Dawn Ranck Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, which oversees the NHELC ministry, gave special credit to Bortzel and Morales. “This would not have happened without the hard work of Wanda and Jennifer,” she said. “They (persevered) with all the details.” She also noted that she was grateful for how employees and volunteers pulled together to help gain the new rating. “The staff was willing to be trained and make adjustments,” she said. “It was really a team effort.”

PUBLIC AUCTION RURAL 1 STY. 4 BDRM. RANCHER 1 CAR GAR. - 28x28 BARN - UTILITY BLDG. 1.2 ACRES w/PASTURE EPHRATA - AKRON AREA

The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the world. In 2018, FIA volunteers reached more than 200,000 people through 10 projects in six remote locations. Their efforts provided clean water to more than 20,000 West African villagers; medical assistance to

1,200 people in the Amazon jungle; Christian radio broadcasting to more than 200,000 people in Bolivia and Brazil; community transformation projects to 1,400 Rama Cay people of Nicaragua; and discipleship training to almost 3,000 in Moldova, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia. Paul Brosey, FIA’s project and team coordinator, recently met with Merv Breckbill from Wall-to-Wall Floor Covering in Strasburg to discuss how FIA and Wall-to-Wall could partner together to impact people physically and spiritually. The business donates financially and covers some travel expenses. Dave Becker, owner and president of D.C. Welding Inc. of Elizabethtown, donates materials and volunteer hours. Offering his fabrication and repair skills, Becker has tested welding machines for FIA’s international project sites, as well as donated brackets to mount windmills and generators used at FIA’s Middletown headquarters.

MONDAY, JUNE 10 • 5 P.M.

Local business owners are invited to join FIA’s efforts by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or welcoming employees to join an FIA volunteer

work team. For more information, readers may contact Brosey at paulbrosey@fiaintl.org or 717-546-0208 or visit www.fiaintl.org.
