Get the Jesus Advantage

Ron Buch, senior pastor with Breakout Ministries, traces the organization’s Jesus Advantage addiction recovery to the emotional healing offered by the Spiritual Boot Camp the ministry has offered since 2008. “A friend who works for Teen Challenge called it JA (Jesus Advantage). “In the recovery world, we are presenting it as JA,” said Buch. “We said, ‘Let’s do the Jesus Advantage and teach how to get free.’” Buch explained that while many people try to willfully stop addiction, JA includes a spiritual component that can lead to transformation. JA, which opens with a meal, has been offered each Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for two years now.

On Saturday, June 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., JA will hold an anniversary open house at Breakout, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The event will feature a free meal with

coffee and tea. “There will be fellowship, and we will talk about what we do,” said Buch, who added that the evening will include testimonies from people who have been positively influenced to stay free from addiction.

and conflict resolution techniques are part of addiction recovery, they do not offer you a relationship with Christ that leads to transformation.

“It is a faith-based approach to recovery,” he said. “People get saved and develop an internal perspective on the meaning of life.”

Buch noted that the program’s tagline is “Get free … stay free.” “A lot of people are working on getting free,” he said. “(They ask), ‘How do I get out of this loop?’ But we are working on once you do get freedom, how do you stay free? We focus on that relationship with God, others, and accountability.”

Breakout associate pastor Rob Weatherholtz, who specializes in addiction recovery and discipleship, said that JA focuses on continuing recovery from addiction. “You have to be delivered from that lifestyle and everything that has to do with it,” said Weatherholtz. “You have to understand the battlefield that you’re on.” Weatherholtz added that while behavior modification

Dean Graybill of Paradise was known for telling stories of his experiences with automobiles. He considered writing a book to share with family, but after talking to some friends, he realized that his tales might appeal to a wider audience. “(They) said it would be of great local interest,” reported Dean. “They said, ‘I would buy that. People would love that.’”

Mitzvah Day delivers for local nonprofits

Press of Morgantown, Dean has produced 151 pages of 165 stories with the title “Burning Rubber, Slamming Gears, & Cheap Gas,” published in mid-March. The pages are punctuated by color and blackand-white photos of vintage automobiles and trucks. Dean began writing about five years ago by sitting at the computer while listening to classic rock ’n’ roll. “It just took me back,” said Dean of the process. “If it had to do with cars, it had stuck in my memory.” Editor Keith Rohrer added color and detail to Dean’s recollections.

On April 16 at 9 a.m., more than 60 families gathered at the Shaarai Shomayim Temple in downtown Lancaster for Mitzvah Day, an annual celebration of volunteerism that serves local nonprofit organizations by doing projects such as painting, packing and cooking food, cleaning parks, and more. A short service was held before the nearly 150 volunteers set out to fulfill the Jewish commandment of doing mitzvahs - good deeds - in the form

of community services.

Bob Houghton, Sh’arim administrator with congregation Shaarai Shomayim, said that the tradition began in the mid-1990s when Rabbi Jack Paskoff suggested the event. “For the most part, many of those organizations have longstanding relationships with us not just on Mitzvah Day,” said Houghton, who noted that during a five-day summer camp for children, older participants take part in community service work on three days.

Dean Graybill

The book recounts Dean’s experiences from Maple Grove to Pequea Valley and as far south as the Norman Wood Bridge. Names and places that may be familiar to area residents include the “S” turns on Hollander Road, Victor Weaver’s Poultry, Paul Shirk’s car lot, and the New Holland Community Memorial Park, where Dean recalled hanging out in 1971 with eight other young people and their cars. Story No. 81 tells how the group cruised around New Holland and behaved themselves on the “nice straight stretch of Jackson Street,” because they knew local police watched the spot. When they moved to the lot where New Holland Ford is now located, they noticed one of their number was missing. When he arrived 10 minutes later,

they learned he had been running interference for the rest by driving exceptionally slowly, which attracted police attention and garnered him a ticket.

Dean also recalled a 1974 incident where he was pulled over while cruising “the loop” in downtown Lancaster. “I had a 1961 Dodge Power Wagon,” he said, explaining that his four-wheel drive, heavy-duty truck had a big motor. Dean was pulled over on suspicion of having altered the suspension to make the truck sit higher. “I said, ‘This is factory suspension,’” recalled Dean. “The policeman said, ‘Yeah and I’m Elvis Presley.’” Dean agreed to go to court, and headed to Horning Dodge to secure schematics to prove the height of the truck was unchanged. At court, the

judge asked Dean and the officer who had pulled him over to take the schematics outside and look at the truck. “(The officer) could see it was original,” said Dean. “The judge said, ‘Case dismissed.’”

The final story in the book is one that Dean sneaked in as a suprise tribute to his wife, Cathy. He and Cathy met when she became friends with Dean’s sister. Dean liked it when Cathy visited their house, but he was too “bashful” to speak to her. That changed when he learned Cathy was interested in him. “I heard she wanted to go out with me, and that gave me the courage to ask her out,” he said.

Readers who are interested in a copy of Dean’s book may search for “Dean Graybill” on Facebook or email him at dehemi@comcast.net.

Many of the projects the group undertook called for outside work. Although Houghton expressed concern about the weather prior to Mitzvah Day, he noted that April 16 was beautiful and that outside activities for Clare House, Interfaith Part-

ners for the Chesapeake’s Stream Project, and Interfaith Power and Light were completed successfully. Up to 20 volunteers cleaned up Rader Park on Marietta Avenue. A second similar project involved cleaning winter trash from rain gardens on West James Street. Rain gardens collect rainwater and begin to filter out pollutants while providing a home for wildlife. “(Issues with) clean water and the environment can be overwhelming,” noted Houghton. “But if you can do this little bit, it makes a difference.”

Another emphasis is on making and packing food. Family-style meals are created for some organizations, while others, such as the local domestic violence shelter,

receive individually packed meals. Houghton mentioned that the shelter is near to the hearts of participants. “If you ask, ‘Which one do we feel for the most?’ it’s them,” shared Houghton, who said the shelter especially struggled during the pandemic when many nonprofits were forgotten.

Families with young children were assigned a project supporting the St. Anne Church brown bag lunch giveaway. “We get all the supplies and package up 100 lunches,” said Houghton, who explained that since the sandwiches included must be made at St. Anne Church, items for those are donated. “In a brown paper bag, we put everything but the sandwiches,” said Houghton, who noted that the children decorate the paper

Residents to remember ambulance association

An event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of West End Ambulance Association (WEAA) will take place on Saturday, May 13, from noon to 5 p.m. at

Maple Grove Community Center, 1420 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. All former crew members of WEAA are invited to attend, as are former crew members of St. Joseph Hospital Medic 1, a partner crew of WEAA.

Attendees are invited to bring uniforms, pictures, papers, or other items to share. They may also bring refreshments to contribute to the spread.

lunch bags. “It’s the shortest project,” he added.

Creativity is also part of a project involving Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.

During Mitzvah Day, volunteers baked brownies and made “thinking of you” cards to deliver to staff members and current residents at the house in Hershey, which provides a home away from home for families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.

During 2020, Mitzvah Day was not held due to COVID19 restrictions, but in 2021, a virtual event was held. “People picked up supplies and did the (assigned) project,” said Houghton.

More information about the congregation may be found at www.shaarai.org.

WEAA was an all-volunteer, nonprofit ambulance association founded in 1973. It started with one ambulance housed in a garage in the rear of Millersville Fire Company and grew to a fleet of four rigs and a building at 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. WEAA was replaced by Lancaster EMS (LEMSA) around 2007 or 2008. The building was given to LEMSA, and paid crews replaced the volunteers.

Up to 150 volunteers took part in indoor and outdoor community service projects when Shaarai Shomayim held its annual Mitzvah Day.

You are invited to explore 55 activities throughout the region, including things to do, see and eat. Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a unique bucket list to highlight activities and places in America’s 55th National Heritage Area.

“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”

Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.

As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as yearround activities to explore.

“Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.

SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.

“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. For more information, visit www.goodsamservices.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local

businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be

offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

Summer camp preparation tips Landis Valley slates events

Summer camp season will soon be here. Throngs of children will board buses each morning or pack their parents’ cars full of essentials to survive a few weeks away from home. Families getting prepared for camp may consider the following suggestions to ensure that kids have an enjoyable time away.

When selecting a camp, parents may want to find out if the camp is accredited. To receive accreditation, camps must meet more than 300 standards related to program quality, safety, and health, according to the American Camp Association.

A child’s readiness also should be considered. There is no magic age when a child will be ready to go to camp, but generally, kids who are ages 7 or 8 may be able to start a resident sleep-away camp. Kids may begin day camp as early as age 3, the same age many kids begin attending preschool. Parents should consider whether the child has spent time away from home at friends’ or family members’ houses; without these preparatory experiences, kids might be better off attending a day camp.

Parents are encouraged to

Golf outing

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”

enable children to connect with fellow campers. If possible, attend a meet-and-greet prior to the start of the season. Neighborhood day camps tend to draw kids from local communities, so there is already a chance kids will know a few fellow campers.

Once at camp, kids should introduce themselves to camp counselors and other program directors early on, and kids are urged to ask questions about specific programs. Counselors can direct campers toward activities they may enjoy.

Much of summer camp will likely be smooth sailing, but it is reasonable to expect some bumps along the way. Campers should not expect perfection, but instead, if something goes awry, they should use the situation as a learning experience on how to handle adversity and try to find the fun in it anyway. Even a medical situation can be overcome, particularly because camps staff qualified medical personnel to ensure children are safe and well.

Summer camp can be a great experience, especially when families take pre-camp measures aimed at ensuring kids have a fun season.

Buckskins track teams sweep visiting Solanco

The weather may have been more fitting of a late season cross country meet but that did not affect the Conestoga Valley track and field teams in their sweep of Solanco on May 1st. The boys romped 109-41 with the Lady Buckskins posting a modest 81-68 victory.

The boys did their heavy lifting on the track where they won every event. Zach Phy and Timothy Gitonga were the lone repeat solo winners with Phy taking the 100m and the 300H while Gitonga claimed the 1600m and 3200m. Aiden Zimmerman claimed two of CV’s three field wins with a 121-2 toss in the discus and a 170-4 heave in the javelin.

Phy picked up another win when he joined Jayden Johnson, Hoffner and Michael Jackson to post a 44.9 in the 400m relay. Hoffner, David Irwin, Caron Miller, and Nigel Marquez teamed up for a 1600m win while Jordan Craighead, Micah Mao, Mason Denlinger, and Irwin opened with a 3200m relay win. Johnson added a 200m win and

Miller an 800m win with Joey Castronova and Caleb Malari rounding out the winners.

For the Lady Buckskins it was Alondra Ortiz and Brooke Denlinger leading the way with two solo wins and two relay victories apiece. Ortiz did her work in the 100m and 200m while Denlinger claimed the 100H and 300H. The pair enjoyed wins in two relay races as well with Hallie Schnapf and Mae Lindor joining for a 400m relay win and Bellemarie Alston and Elli Hershey for a 1600m relay win. Alston, along with Meagan Kime, Kylee Antrim and Seana Dougherty posted a 10:32.1 to take the 3200m relay. Alston and Felicia Pius picked up the final two wins on the track while Kaitlyn Williams took the javelin with a toss of 98-5.

VOLLEYBALL

In their only match over the last week, CV ended up on the wrong side of a 3-0 loss to Hempfield with the Knights posting wins of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20. Drew Hultstrand collected 18 assists to go with eight digs while Carson Hoover finished with seven kills and one ace.

LACROSSE

There are two sides to a win-loss record and unfortunately for the CV girl’s lacrosse team they are having trouble adding to the good side of that ledger. The Lady Bucks dropped games against Cedar Crest and York Suburban, falling to 1-13 on the year.

CV dropped that York Suburban game by a 10-8 final on Aril 28th, two days after their 7-6 setback to Cedar Crest. Jamie Handwerger finished with 13 saves against the Lady Falcons but a 2-1 first half deficit was the deciding factor. Jordyn Hironimus paced the attack with two goals while Sophia Hess, Danae Ulrich, Samantha Silvaggio and Olivia Sowal all netted one goal.

The boys’ lacrosse team inched closer to locking up a postseason berth with wins over Cedar Crest, Chambersburg, and Warwick. The results stretched CV’s winning streak to four games with a 9-6 mark to show for their efforts.

All three wins were by comfortable margins, starting with an 18-3 drubbing of Cedar Crest on April

26th. Soren Stoltzfus needed just three saves thanks to Jeff Fisher’s five goals and five assists. Add in three goals from both Hunter Silvaggio and Isaiah Sensenig, two goals from Noah Nolt and single scores from Tyson Zwaska, Justin Corson, Bryce Zwaska, Eli Tlumach and Brian Miller and you that win.

The Buckskins stepped out of the L-L for their April 29th showdown, inviting Chambersburg to town, and sending them home with a 15-1 loss. Fisher netted another five goals but only three assists while Nolt collected four scores. Tyson Zwaska, Corson and Sensenig cleaned up the scoring with two goals each. Stoltzfus finished with five saves.

Warwick was the next victim, falling by a 17-5 final on May 2nd. Nolt went crazy, outscoring the Warriors by himself with a nine-goal game. Fisher was the only other multi-goal scorer with three while Sensenig, Corson and Tlumach added one goal each. Stoltzfus had another five saves in the win.

TENNIS

The tennis season ended with the Buckskins taking part in the L-L Flight Tournament. Michael Horst knocked off Marin Davis of Warwick and Toss Weist of Ephrata before bowing out with a Flight Two semifinal loss to Manheim Township’s Zach Taylor.

the quarterfinals with a loss to Cedar Crest’s Rocco Shkreli and Joe Shkreli.

BASEBALL

Nolan Miller was the only other singles player to have any traction, topping Elizabethtown’s Ethan Duralja in the opening round of Flight Four action before falling to Manheim Township’s Jake Palandjian in the quarterfinals. Fabian Heine, in Flight Three, and Yuji Wenger, in Flight One, both dropped their opening matches to bring their singles season to a close.

Four baseball games in a sevenday stretch are a lot and when three of them end as losses it can be difficult to shake off. For Conestoga Valley, the highlight of that stretch came on April 27th with a 1-0 win over Lebanon. Owen Fisher picked up the win after covering the first four innings while Brenden Bossert covered the final three innings. Together they allowed three hits and no runs to go with nine strikeouts and two walks. Fisher helped his cause, plating the winning run with his fourth inning double.

The Buckskins opened the month of May on the wrong side of a 9-3 final with Ephrata claiming the win.

The Mountaineers plated all nine runs through three innings, giving the loss to Evan Wilson with Caden Miller covering the final two and one third innings. Jude Thompson used one of his two singles to plate CV’s two fourth inning runs while Wilson picked up the rarely seen hit by pitch RBI in the third.

Elizabethtown came to town on the 2nd, leaving with a 7-2 victory. Fisher was hit with the loss this time after covering six of the seven innings while both Seth Burkett and Thompson saw action in relief.

Thompson accounted for CV’s lone RBI by drawing a walk in the sixth inning.

The Buckskins made it three in a row on the 3rd, falling to Solanco 10-8 with the Mules scoring the winning runs in the top of the seventh. That gave the loss to Bossert with Evan Lapp covering the final one and two-thirds innings. CV used the long ball to generate their offense with Wilson, Lapp and Miller all going yard. Wilson and Lapp enjoyed back-to-back home run action in the first while Miller connected for his shot in the fourth. Brandon Hursh tacked on one last RBI with a sixth inning sac fly.

SOFTBALL

The softball team closed out April on a mini run, topping Elizabethtown and Lebanon on back-to-back days. CV needed a five-run rally to get by E-town on the 26th with Rhiannon Henry picking up the win. Alexa Freeburn led the offense with a two-hit, two-RBI game. Isabella Rodriguez, Brylee Bateson, Tori Rhoads, Kylie Metzler, and Bianca Henry all chipped in with one RBI each.

One day later the Lady Buckskins collected an 8-3 win over Lebanon with Rodriguez and Emma Wanger leading the way. Wagner had two hits to go with two RBI while Rodriguez had just one hit with her two RBI. Bianca Henry and Ashley Cirilo picked up one RBI apiece. Bateson earned the win, covering four and two-third innings with Rhiannon Henry taking over to finish things out.

Conestoga Valley suffered a setback on May 3rd, falling to Solanco by a 10-0 final. Rhiannon Henry and Bateson combined to cover the fiveinning affair with Henry absorbing nine of the 10 Solanco runs.

Fulton Bank donates to Bench Mark Program

LCHS alumni earn recognition

Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) added three new members to its Athletic Hall of Honor on April 1. The Lancaster Catholic Hall of Honor recognizes and celebrates those individuals who, through their participation, guidance, and support, have made outstanding contributions to Lancaster Catholic athletics.

Rhoades attended Kings College with the intention of playing football; however, the school discontinued football his freshman year, so he and other players formed a club team. He was invited to try out for punter for the new American Football League team the Buffalo Bills, but the military draft prevented him from doing so.

Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, has donated $22,500 to Bench Mark Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fitness-based mentoring, academic coaching and career counseling to underserved youths.

A $15,000 donation through Pennsylvania’s Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program will help expand the Student Leadership Program, which provides training to transform students into Bench Mark Program peer mentors and employees. Fulton also donated $7,500 through the state Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

Will Kiefer, executive director of Bench Mark Program,

accepted the donation from Fulton Bank staff members Phil Smith, regional commercial executive; Christie Eachus, market manager; Mark Katkovcin, consumer sales manager; and Josh Griffith, commercial banking team leader.

Bench Mark Program provides a continuum of care through a range of programs that support youths in the detention center, in the probation department, within their schools and in their community. It recently moved to a new, expanded facility at 102 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Bench Mark worked with Fulton Bank for financing to support renovation of its new facility. Robert Rhoades, Class of 1964, was recognized for his performance in football, basketball, and track. While attending LCHS, he received nine varsity letters. In football, Rhoades was a starter in football playing wide receiver, defensive back, and punter. He was chosen to play in the Lancaster County East/West All Star Football Game as a wide receiver, earning Lancaster County All Star recognition. In basketball, he was a three-year letter winner and two-year starter in basketball playing guard. In track, Rhoades was a three year letter winner, participating in javelin, broad jump, and high jump. He participated in the PA Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association (PCIAA) state track meet in all three events.

John Kunkle, Class of 1969, was recognized for his performance in football, wrestling, and track. While attending LCHS, he was a three-year letter winner and a starter in football playing defensive back and halfback. In his senior year, he was named First Team Tri-County Football League All Star at defensive back/linebacker. He helped lead his Lancaster Catholic teams to an overall record of 18-9-3. In wrestling, Kunkle was a two-year letter winner and compiled a 19-2 overall record as a senior. He also won the 1969 PCIAA State Catholic Wrestling Championship. While running track, Kunkle was a two-year letter winner, running the 880, 1-mile relay, and 2-mile relay. He earned various
