Honoring veterans in Leola

While placing flags on veterans’ graves, Bob Zook paused to discuss his own family’s service to this country. Bob served from 1965 to 1968 with the Marines, and his son Jon served four years in Alaska with the Air Force before being deployed to Afghanistan, where he was assigned to remove weapons from a plane that overran the runway into an area laden with landmines.

ULTWMA organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of

all local residents.

On May 25, Bob and his wife, Barb, along with Jon, Jon’s wife, Michele, and Jon and Michele’s two children - Gavin, age 17, and Joelle, age 16 - gathered with Nancy George and Bob Ranck at the Bareville Cemetery, Brethren Church Road in Leola, to decorate 40 graves prior to Memorial Day. Barb reported that Gavin and Joelle have been helping with the flag placement since they were small children.

The group represents members of the board of trustees of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Bob Zook is president of ULTWMA. The vice president is Tim Chopp, and George serves as secretary. Board members include Donna Chopp, Connie Gross, Harold Hoover, Lin Pickel, Ranck, Gene and Janet Rodgers, and Jean Summers.

RRR to host Summer Field Day

“This is the open house of our hobby,” said Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), a local organization that will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day. “It’s our chance to show people who have no or limited exposure to this hobby what it’s all about,” stated Van Patten.

This year’s event, known to RRR members as “Summer Field Day,” will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday.

RRR president Ralph Hess noted that antennae setup will be held on Saturday between 8 and 9 a.m. “There are a lot of new hams who want to see that,” said Hess. “Ham” is another term for amateur radio. The hobby invites interested persons to experiment with electronics and communications techniques. Hams also provide a free public service to communities during a disaster or emergency - all without needing a cellphone or the internet.

up more than 400 for distribution at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center and delivered them to board members, who then placed them at six area cemeteries. In addition to Bareville, flags are placed at the Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, and Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery, where members of local Boy and Girl Scout troops help out. Flags are also used to

mark veterans’ graves at Eby’s Cemetery at Monterey Chapel and the cemetery at Stumptown Mennonite Church.

ULTWMA is a nonprofit, volunteer organization located at 54 W. Main St., Leola. ULTWMA organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of all local residents. On May 25, the organization gave out four $1,000 scholarships to Conestoga Valley High School

seniors who are children of veterans. This year, all four seniors were children of Army veterans. The 2023 recipients were Victoria Rhoads, daughter of Matt Rhoads; Trey Miller, son of Timothy Miller, Sr.; Gwen Wilde, daughter of Shane Wilde; and Lily Ennis, daughter of Sylvia Weber.

Readers who would like to learn more about the organization may visit www.facebook.com/ULTWMA.

“Thaddeus Stevens is a perfect spot (to hold field day),” noted Van Patten. “People will have their radio stations set up, and the focus is to contact other clubs across the country doing the same thing. We hope to talk to a couple hundred (individuals) or more.”

This is the 90th year hams have used field day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from

almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during field day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio.

Van Patten pointed out that in addition to contacting other clubs in the U.S., attempts will be made to

contact clubs in other countries and even hams in outer space. “We also hope to utilize the space station,” he said, noting that there is a radio aboard and that amateurs are encouraged to use the facility as a relay point. “Last year, an astronaut was participating in field day from the space station,” he added. Although RRR was not able to make contact, many clubs did. “(The astronaut) was very busy handing

out contacts the whole weekend nonstop,” said Van Patten. “The equipment to do that is very basic,” he added. “For less than $30, you can build an antenna to contact the space station.”

In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in field day. “Last year, (there were even) more because the hobby is growing every year,” said Van Patten. “(There are) more than 770,000 hams (nation-

wide) now, and there are 28,000 in Pennsylvania alone.” Hess noted that hams range in age from as young as 7 to 102. “The hobby has changed in the last five years and really (become) attainable for a number of people,” said Van Patten. “The entry point to get involved and have a radio is less than $50.” For more information about field day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl.org.

The Lancaster Community Market will return to the area on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at 311 Stanley K. Multiple local vendors will sell a variety of items during the event, including homemade jewelry, hand-poured candles, wreaths, dog treats and accessories and bath products. Lancaster-based author Chas Williamson will have books available for purchase and signing.

reached out wanting to support our mission, which is great because it’s such a hub for businesses in the area,” Kalbach added. “The event has had a large boost of support from the community and has helped us support so many businesses and nonprofits.”

The Lancaster Community Market drew over 1,000 attendees in its first year. Kalbach received a wave of positive feedback from those

in the community, as well as visitors of Lancaster who were pleasantly surprised by the festivities. Due to the fact that buses from surrounding areas stop at Tanger Outlets, Kalbach said the location of the market helps to promote the culture of businesses in Lancaster and extend their reach.

The Lancaster Community Market was first organized in 2021 by MJ Small Business Squad, a marketing agency that seeks to promote locally owned companies in Lancaster. MJ Squad began organizing community events after the COVID-19 pandemic to assist business owners who were heavily affected by the resulting closures. When Tanger Outlets contacted MJ Squad about hosting an event, MJ Squad’s co-founder Megan Kalbach said that she was ecstatic about the partnership. “Tanger

Ice Cream Sundae Day slated

Celtic music and dance, face painting, balloon creations and puppet shows will be featured at the Eicher Arts Center’s annual Ice Cream Sundae Day on Sunday, June 11. The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center will be accepted.

Ice cream sundaes and other refreshments will be offered free of charge from 2 to 6 p.m., while supplies last, at the arts center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park.

Closed Tues. & Thurs. jfchiropractic@gmail.com www.jangdharifamilychiropractic.com

Joyful Canvas will be on hand from 2 to 4 p.m. to provide imaginative face painting and balloon creations.

At 2:15 p.m. and again at

3:15 p.m., Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will perform “Captain Crook & the Missing Treasure.”

The Celtic Martins, which performed at the event last year, will provide the day’s music and dance entertainment from 4 to

6 p.m. The family band plays Irish and American fiddle tunes and performs Irish step-dancing.

The Eicher House was constructed as a farmhouse for the Eicher family some 290 years ago, nearly 180 years

before the property became part of the borough park.

The Eicher Arts Center Inc., a nonprofit organization, helped save the historic Eicher House from being demolished in the 1980s and helped to transform it into a showcase venue that is rented out for weddings and other private events and also used by the Eicher for a series of entertainment and cultural events for the public.

The annual event in June featuring ice cream sundaes as well as musical entertainment has become an Eicher tradition and often attracts the Eicher’s largest audience of the year.

Woman Veterans Day celebration set

Team Jennifer Cahill Charities (TJCC), an organization dedicated to supporting female

veterans and ensuring their dignified final arrangements and funerals, will host a celebration of the first-ever Woman Veterans Day in Pennsylvania. House Bill 2361 designated June 12 of each year as Woman Veterans Day in Pennsylvania.

The celebration will take place on Saturday, June 10, at Kissel Valley Farm, 645 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will serve as a platform to honor the service and sacrifice of female veterans while raising awareness of their unique needs.

One of the highlights of the event will be a courtesy luncheon provided exclusively for female veterans, catered by Mission BBQ. In addition to the meal, the luncheon will provide an opportunity for woman veterans to connect, share stories, and enjoy camaraderie.

The Woman Veterans Day event will feature a diverse range of activities and programs designed to celebrate the accomplishments of female veterans and create a supportive environment to address their specific needs.

The event will include speeches, an education and resource fair, and networking and mentorship opportunities.

For more information, to preregister, or to learn how to support TJCC’s mission, visit www.tjcc.site or contact Mike Cahill at 717-371-3035 or Denise Sheridan at 717-7153933. Preregistration is strongly encouraged.

Founded by the late Jennifer Cahill, an Air Force veteran, TJCC is committed to preplanning and prepaying the final expenses of female veterans with terminal cancer.
