A special connection

Aaron’s Acres campers have chance to “horse around” at GMTRC

“Describingthe emotional connection between a horse and a human is hard to verbalize, but it’s easy to witness,” said Jennifer Rummel, executive director at Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), who has spent time as a buddy to visiting Aaron’s Acres campers. “A horse’s non-judgmental nature, its ability to communicate without language, and its therapeutic movement are inviting to people with special needs.”

Most summers since July of 2011, a partnership between Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21 through a summer camp, has brought campers to the GMTRC facility in Leola to experience that unique connection with a therapy horse. During the visits, campers ride horses and learn about equine care to engage in sensory processing activities.

Working with volunteers and staff members, campers also have the opportunity to lead a horse through an obstacle course. “Volunteersand staff for both Aaron’s Acres and GMTRC work with the campers to help them with the obstacle course as well as other activities,” said Rummel, who noted that activities include a scavenger hunt, a painting activity, equine grooming and care, and on-lead adaptive horseback riding. “(The activities are) based on each camper’s individual abilities and needs,” noted Rummel, who added that GMTRC will use about 10 volunteers to prepare for and carry out each of the six visits planned during the months of June and July. In 2022, more than 20 volunteers gave nearly 200 total hours to GMTRC during Aaron’s Acres’ visits. Aaron’s Acres also brings volunteers, along with

At Lancaster Science Factory, kids experiment in fun

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.

At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned. This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.

Housed in a repurposed industrial building, the Lancaster Science Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families. “Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”

program staff members and others to assist the campers.

According to Rummel, there is something “magical” about experiencing the interaction between a child with unique abilities and a horse. She described watching a camper mount a horse named Violet for the first time. “(The camper) felt the connection instantly,” she recalled. “What made this moment even more special

is that this camper’s brother, who also is different-abled, was there to witness that moment.”

Elaine Burnett, program director with Aaron’s Acres, said the organization is excited to partner with GMTRC again, noting, “The program staff and volunteers at GMTRC have patience and understanding, which help them to support our participants where their needs are.” She added, During our time

together, both the Aaron’s Acres staff and GMTRC volunteers bring smiles to the participants’ faces.”

Both Aaron’s Acres and GMTRC are nonprofit organizations that accept donations to offer opportunities and services. More information about GMTRC may be found at www.greystonemanortrc.org. More about Aaron’s Acres may be learned at www.aaronsacres.org.

The Manheim Church Softball League will celebrate its 50th year of slow-pitch softball on Saturday, June 24, with fun for the whole family. The celebration will take place at the league’s main field, the pool field located adjacent to Manheim Central High School, 400 E. Adele Ave.

“We’re calling this All-Star Saturday,” said Mike Givler, president of the league. “We’ll have two all-star games as well as a home run derby and a reunion game.”

and camaraderie of the players and churches,” he said.

He also credits the league’s longevity to the support of a group of volunteers. “This league doesn’t happen year after year without lots of people helping,” he stated. “From making schedules, to the umpires, to having the teams ready to go night after night, there are just so many great people in this league.”

All-Star Saturday is an opportunity to not only focus

on the league and its history, but also honor the game and give back to the community, Givler said. “It’s going to be a great community event, with good food and fun,” he stated. “You’re going to see some really talented softball players, and you’ll be able to see some players from yesteryear try to shake off the rust and come out and play.”

The reunion game will kick off the festivities at 2 p.m. “This is open to alumni of the league, and it’s basically an old-timer’s game,” Givler said. “It’s an opportunity for players who no longer play to relive their glory days.” The first all-star game will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by the 5 p.m. home run derby for church league players. The second all-star game will begin at 6:30 p.m. “Each team is picking three all-stars from their team for the games,” Givler explained.

Along with the games, a variety of food trucks will be on-site, with food available for purchase by donation. The expenses for the food trucks are being covered by an anonymous donor, Givler said, and all donations will benefit the Home on Ferdinand and Teen Central in Manheim.

The Manheim Church Softball League will celebrate 50 years of slow-pitch softball.

Mennonite Life posts book auction

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual book auction on Friday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room and will feature a collection of rare and used books that will be up for bids.

Among the available books this year are several volumes that relate to local history and culture, such as Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia” in its original leather binding and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” (“Of the History of the Martyrs”) in its original vellum binding. “Opera Omnia” was written in 1681, and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” was published in 1722; both tomes were scribed in Dutch. Other books available to purchase will include “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth, “Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Burdge and Horst and an 1849 edition of “Martyr’s Mirror” by Thieleman J. van Braght.

Bids may be placed online and by mail until Thursday, July 13, and the auction books will be displayed in Mennonite Life’s Collections Building in the weeks leading

up to the event. For more information, visit https:// mennonitelife.org/events.

Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.

The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.

“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and

how it impacts people.”

All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the gener-

The Patriotic Stitchers group held its second annual volunteer appreciation luncheon on April 29 in the Veterans Hall of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial.

The Patriotic Stitchers is affiliated with the War Memorial Association and honors veterans who are on hospice services by presenting them with patrioticthemed blankets. Each blanket is handmade - either knit, crocheted or quilted - and bears a tag signed by the member who made it. To maximize the number of veterans the group can reach, the Patriotic Stitchers collaborate with hospices in York and Lancaster counties, including Hospice & Community Care, Caring, Amedisys, Compassus, Serenity, and ProMedica/Heartland. It also works closely with the Veterans Affairs hospitals in Coatesville and Lebanon.

Lancaster Science Factory

The Lancaster Science Factory is 17,000 square feet of 65 engaging exhibits that fall into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category. Those exhibits specifically target areas of mechanics and motion, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, light and vision, acoustics, electricity, math and robotics and sustainable energy, just to name a few.

The main exhibit hall is supported outside by a 4,000square-foot, three-season courtyard.

But the Lancaster Science Factory also hosts classes, workshops, after-school pro-

grams, summer camps and social events.

“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s hands-on. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”

In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third were local residents.

Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations. The museum staff is made up of 10 fulltime employees.

“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”

Through the inspiration of founder and former local advertising executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Sci-

ence Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.

“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”

present and shared that their collective efforts resulted in the group’s presenting more than 1,300 patriotic blankets to veterans over the last three years. ProMedica /Heartland Hospice’s Amy Roth Sandrolini, bereavement coordinator, and Christy Trump, administrator, shared stories of how much a patriotic blanket can mean to a hospice patient.

Several stories were shared

about the process and impact of presenting a patriotic blanket to a dying veteran. They highlighted the lasting legacy of the work of the Patriotic Stitchers.

Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, facilitated a group discussion so that volunteers could learn more about each other. Most volunteers work alone or in small groups, so the event provided an opportunity for them to be together in larger numbers. Rep. Keith Greiner, an early supporter of the Patriotic Stitchers, offered words of appreciation and admiration.

Food was provided by Gracie’s on West Main and paid for by ServePro of Manheim.
