A Glimpse Inside Agriculture At Family Farm Days By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“That was good ice cream and chocolate milk,” Danelle Fernandez commented as she wiped the drips off her fingers. The miniature ice cream cones and samples of chocolate milk have long been a staple of Family Farm Days at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. Fernandez, who lives in Pasadena, Md., but grew up in Lancaster, arranged for her sisters and their father to meet her at Oregon Dairy when Family Farm Days opened on June 11. “I remember coming as a kid, and I wanted to share the fun and the chocolate milk with my daughter,” she explained. Adelaide Fernandez, 10 months, appeared to be having a blast as she munched on chicken tenders and french fries, licked up vanilla ice cream, and dug through field corn at a sensory table. Her cousins, 3-year-old Ellison See Family Farm Days pg 7
Wagon rides, livestock, barrel trains, a mobile aquaponics lab, and more were all part of the annual Family Farm Days event, which was held at Oregon Dairy on June 11 to 13.

Bill Cole Named Railroad Museum Volunteer Of The Year
Project Garners Win For Local Student By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
“I am a model railroader,” said Bill Cole proudly. “I love trains all the time.” A man who first fell in love with trains when he received one for Christmas at the age of 5 growing up in Minnesota could not resist visiting a railroad museum after moving to Lancaster. But making just the occasional visit to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, became a thing of the past when Cole retired. Instead, after picking up a volunteer brochure around 2012, Cole signed on to work in the museum archives. One day a week, he scans and catalogs photo collections and helps prepare documents

When Barbara Slothower, Garden Spot Village (GSV) resident and retired Havertown science teacher, learned that fellow St. Stephen Reformed Church attendee and Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) student Jordis Patterson had an interest in aeroponics, she invited the youngster to visit the GSV aeroponic greenhouse, which had opened in spring 2016. Fast forward three years to February 2019 when Patterson was mulling over possible science projects to complete for the HMS Academic Fair. “I wanted to compare and contrast seeds grown in potting soil versus seeds grown aeroponically,” said Patterson, who had See Science Project pg 5

been reading up on the subject. The problem was that the apparatus needed for the experiment was cost prohibitive. When Slothower heard about the situation, she enlisted Scott Weaver, GSV director of campus services, to ask if there might be a way Patterson could use the GSV aeroponic equipment to complete her project. Slothower explained that the GSV greenhouse located along Kinzer Avenue grows Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, and more vegetables to be used in the GSV kitchens. Extra vegetables are sold or donated to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Because the aeroponic greenhouse has limited hours, Weaver offered to move several of the portable pods to the GSV conservatory, where Patterson could monitor their growth on a daily basis at a time convenient to her. By March 12, Patterson’s science teacher, Michael Lichty, had approved her project, and the pods were in place. Patterson planted Rex butterhead lettuce seeds from the same seed packets into pots. Some seeds were planted in potting soil, and some were planted in the pods in rockwool that had been soaked in water. For the first three days after the seeds were planted, Slothower visited and recorded information so that Patterson could attend a school trip. Once Patterson returned, she juggled checking the plants with playing defense on the HMS soccer team. Because of the location of the seeds in the conservatory, she could check them daily until well into the evening, often arriving after 5:30 p.m. to measure the height and width of the plants, count the number of leaves, and take photos. She also checked temperature, humidity, and weather, and every three days, she turned the pods. She often met up with Slothower during these visits. Patterson’s hypothesis proposed that seeds planted at the same time exposed to the same conditions should grow to the same size at approximately the same rate, but the data she was gathering was proving her suppositions wrong. “In 48 hours the aeroponics were up, but it took days for the (seeds) in potting soil,” recalled Slothower. “I proved my hypothesis wrong because there was a big difference in size (of the plants),” said Patterson, who added that she also wanted to see if aeroponic vegetables could be grown economically in small spaces like apartments. “I proved that right,” said a smiling Patterson. “Aeroponics are faster and low maintenance.” Patterson presented the results of her project in a display that included her hypothesis, purpose, necessary materials, variables, procedure, research, and conclusion. She also included a special thanks to Slothower, Weaver, and GSV. In addition to her display, she gave a three-tofive-minute oral presentation to the impartial HMS judges. After hearing her teacher praise her project, Patterson had a suspicion she might do well in the judging. On April 25, she was awarded first place in the Academic Fair competition, beating out her 18 classmates’ submissions. One of her proudest moments came when she recalled her science teacher mentioning one judge who never gave high scores to the projects. The judge had given Patterson’s project all top scores.

Riding in the tractorpulled wagons that shuttled visitors to and from the farm, as well as taking a barrel train ride, were highlights for the Staffords. “It’s a great family-oriented event,” Danelle’s sister, Darcy Stafford, said. “I was, of course, excited to see my family, and my children love seeing the farm.” Attendees of Family Farm Days, which ran through June 13, were treated to a tour of the dairy barn; samples of several types of beverages, including kombucha and two varieties of chocolate milk; educational performances in the barnyard theater; a petting zoo; a scavenger hunt; stream studies; and a mobile aquaponics lab. turns at a corn launcher. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was slated to visit on June 13. Among the numerous exhibits from farm-related organizations, Master Gardeners Dyan Eisenberger and Jane Kintzi staffed a display from Penn State Extension on the spotted lanternfly. “It’s important to advertise current events that affect farmers and other people,” Eisenberger said. The spotted lanternfly is a highly invasive insect that has been found in southeastern Pennsylvania. Although some people think it is pretty, with white and red black-spotted wings, it destroys crops and particularly impacts the grape, hardwood, tree fruit, landscape, and nursery industries. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture are both working to keep the insect contained. A quarantine order has been issued, requiring all items moving within or out of the area to be inspected so that the transport of any living life stage of the pest can be prevented.
“It’s hatching from April to July, so people will start seeing them,” Eisenberger said. The nymphs start at about a quarter-inch in size, but they grow to four times that size. Folks who see evidence of spotted lanternflies are asked to report them at http://extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly. Family Farm Days proved to be an effective place to disseminate information about spotted lanternflies and other invasive species, including Ailanthus altissima, which is also known as the tree-of-heaven. “”People are seeking information, and that’s our job: to get the research-based information out there,” Kintzi said. And that - getting information out - was at the heart of Family Farm Days. A cooperative effort between Oregon Dairy Family Farm and the Lancaster County Agriculture Council, the event aimed to spread the word about farming and its importance for individuals and the community. For more information, readers may visit www.lancasterag council.com/resources/family -farm-days.

As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) celebrates its 40th anniversary, Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer for NHSAP, is looking forward to featuring a few new acts in the lineup, including the Temple Avenue jazz quintet, Vinegar Creek Constituency, Dreadnought Brigade, and Jubilation Jazz. But Noll is especially looking forward to the concert in the park on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. “John Bressler has not been here for many years,” said Noll of the pianist who is originally from Churchtown and who now tours internationally. Bressler is known for his passion to entertain and his raspy vocal style. The 2019 NHSAP will include more than 20 live musical presentations in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with

the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 17, concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funds to help support NHSAP are raised by the annual arts and crafts show sponsored by the organization. This year’s show will be held in the park on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers have lined up about 75 vendors for the rain-orshine event. Among the displays, shoppers will find crafters selling pottery, soap, candles, crocheted crafts, stained glass, repurposed items, wooden crafts, photography, plants, lawn ornaments, jewelry, pot holders, embroidered towels, and more. Many of the crafters will donate items to a Chinese auction. NHSAP craft fair coordinators have arranged for vendors to sell breakfast and lunch items at the event. Happy Dog will sell both breakfast and lunch foods. Foltz Pretzels will sell pretzels and lemonade, and Schatz Ice Cream will be on-site. A signed and framed Myrtle Tremblay print of a scene from Charlotte Street in Lancaster will be set up at the show. The print will be given away on Monday, Sept. 2, at the Fiddlers Picnic, which will be the final NHSAP event of the season. The season will begin with the New Holland Concert Band on Thursday, July 4. The concert will be followed by fireworks. The rain date for that event will be Friday, July 5. On Sunday, July 7, Summit Hill, a bluegrass and gospel band, will return to the park, and on Wednesday, July 10, Charlie Zahm will play. On Saturday, July 13, the popular Nomads will

Vocal Harmonix from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer
R040960
School Age Openings
By Ann Mead Ash
The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis. Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. “We’re a very caring group,” one member explained after the rehearsal concluded, again with hugs, this time for the group’s newest member, who was voted in that night. “Our sisterhood is very strong,” agreed director Lori Jo Whitehaus. “This is like a big family.” Currently, members range in age from early 20s to 91, and while there is a rigorous audition process to get in, it is unheard of to be kicked out, one octogenarian said. Formerly the Red Rose City Chorus, Vocal Harmonix (VHMX) adopted its new name in January 2018 to differentiate it from the Red Rose Men’s Chorus and to reflect the fact that membership is not restricted to Lancaster city residents. In fact, members come from Lancaster, Chester, Dauphin, Berks, York, and Cumberland counties. Whitehaus explained that membership is skill-based rather than attendance-based, so it is not necessarily a hardship if folks are unable to attend every Monday evening rehearsal. Each song the group performs has a rehearsal track so that choir members can perfect their parts at home. To ensure a
near-perfect sound, each member is required to record herself singing her parts and send the recordings to her section leader for approval. The group’s hard work has paid off over the years. Most recently, VHMX placed third overall and first in the midsize division in Region 19 competition and is waiting to receive an invitation to compete at the international contest that will be held in Louisville, Ky., next year. Additionally, quartets composed of VHMX members finished eighth and 13th out of approximately 50. During the recent rehearsal, Whitehaus reported that the chorus will be ordering pins to commemorate that VHMX scored more than 600 points in adjudication. She noted that 800 is a perfect score and, like the SAT, is difficult to achieve. Leading a chorus to score more than 600 designates Whitehaus as a master director in Sweet Adelines International (SAI), which is the largest women’s singing organization in the world. VHMX has been affiliated with SAI since 1961. A few VHMX members are part of the SAI leadership team. SAI choirs - VHMX included - specialize in unaccompanied, or a capella, singing. VHMX is an a capella show chorus, with a style that is close to musical theater. The group sings a number of barbershop-style songs, but its repertoire is not restricted to that style. All of its music is performed from memory, and each piece is carefully choreographed. The group accepts perfor-
mance gigs, including singing telegrams on select holidays. “We’d love it if people need entertainment, they’d think of Vocal Harmonix,” Whitehaus said. VHMX will participate in the Lititz Fourth of July Parade on Wednesday, July 3, and sing the national anthem at a Barnstormers game on Thursday, Sept. 5. The group will also perform as part of Opera Lancaster’s Lemonade Concert Series on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. During that concert, VHMX will join Harmony Revolution, featuring members of the Red Rose Men’s Chorus, on several pieces. On the four Mondays leading up to the Aug. 1 concert - July 8, 15, 22, and 29 - at 7 p.m., folks who are interested in VHMX are welcome to attend rehearsals, where they can learn to sing a modern arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty.” “We’ll be teaching what we do,” Whitehaus said. “They can sing with us when we sing with the men without joining us.” New members are welcome at any time. Folks who would like more information may visit www.vocalharmonix.org or email vocalharmonix@gmail.com. Pictured on front: Awardwinning a capella show chorus Vocal Harmonix welcomes women who are interested in singing unaccompanied choral and barbershop-style music.

future generations,” he said, noting that it will be important to keep up with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling
hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the companyowned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses. The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding that the layout is more detailed than others at the museum. “(The layout) doesn’t run unless (a volunteer) is here to run it because it is a little more complicated,” he said. “You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and the museum, the digital command control system for the layout is the same one Cole uses for the layout in his home basement in Lancaster. Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading. The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was
originally for the Christmas t r e e , b u t I b u i l t a l a y o u t .” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. HO did not hold Cole’s interest continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the O-gauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Kairos Health Systems worked with Value Care Alliance (VCA) recently to promote a Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) Boot Camp presented by Stephanie Corbett, DHA, of HCPro. Skilled nursing facility participants located in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee attended the program in preparation for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) post-acute care valuebased care management program, which begins in October 2019. Because a significant percentage of high intensity care is delivered in the post-acute care setting after discharge from the hospital, Kairos Health Systems and Value Care Alliance worked together to provide this program to prepare skilled nursing facilities to successfully meet the requirements of the PDPM program, which promotes meeting the increasing health care needs of patients with complex medical needs and providing
