Police Department Aids Local Families By Ann Mead Ash
In mid-April, Steve Zerbe, chief of the East Lampeter Township Police Department, asked detective Joe Edgell for ideas on how to help the community, especially those who were not able to work due to COVID-19 restrictions. Joe took the question to his wife, Tina, who had worked with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services in the past. Tina turned to Katie Reiff, social worker with Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD). While Tina and Katie were brainstorming about the best way to help area families, Joe and the other detectives at the police department were talking as well. “(The detectives) were talking about (purchasing) pizzas (for families), but that only (provides) one meal for one night,” recalled Tina. “Then one of the detectives suggested giving gift cards

The effort brought in more than $4,500 in gift cards to local grocery stores.

Forty-eight percent of the world's mail volume is handled by the Postal Service.
Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health (CHI), is firm when discussing the beliefs of the organization’s board concerning the new St. John Neumann School for Children and Families that CHI is building on Locust Street in Columbia. “Everything we offer should be available to everybody,” said Goropoulos. “Every student will have every opportunity within the center. Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our family-focused approach to child care See New School pg 3

Outdoor Dining Space By Ann Mead Ash
When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many began thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. For Tina Edgell, one of the owners at Revere Tavern, located at 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, first learned from the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association at the end of May that outdoor dining would be allowed. “We thought, ‘Now we will make our

On April 24, Tina posted on her Facebook page to let others know about the drive. On April 28, the police department posted on its own page. The department’s post read, in part, “As we continue to navigate life during this devastating pandemic, the East Lampeter Township Police would like to recognize an immediate need within our community. There are numerous CVSD families who have been hit the hardest during these unprecedented times making it difficult to provide basic needs for their families.” The post went on to ask for donations of grocery store gift cards through May 8, and it ended with the words, “Let’s build a stronger community together!” See Police Department pg 6

Benefit Golf Outing Rescheduled The annual Landis Adult Day Services Benefit Golf Outing, originally scheduled to be held on June 5, has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24. The event will take place at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Tee times will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Reservations have been transferred to July 24 for those who had already committed as sponsors or golfers for the June 5 event. The needs of Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) clients and their families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Clients are staying safe by staying home, but this change puts pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. Proceeds from the golf outing will help Landis ADS to prepare for clients’ return when the service is permitted to open. Registrations for sponsors and golfers will be accepted until Friday, July 10. To register and for more information, readers may visit https://landisadult day.org/golf/. Information is also available by contacting Janice Nikoloff, events specialist, at 717-381-3580. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registrations and sponsorships to be charitable donations to Landis ADS. Anyone who prefers his or her contribution to be handled differently may contact Nikoloff at jnikoloff@landis.org. For information about Foxchase Golf Club, readers may visit https://foxchasegolf.com/.

New School from pg 1 revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the
curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),”
Michelle Keim, food service and nutrition manager, is excited about the progress being made on the kitchen at St. John Neumann School for Children and Families. Developing good nutritional habits will be part of the school’s health and wellness curriculum.

members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet to both floors over the top of the parking lot,” said Goropoulos. COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. Readers who want to learn more about CHI and the new school in Columbia may visit https://stjosephchildrens health.org.

said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Students who attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and livestreamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits containing printed materials and activities for the week will be mailed to each participant registering by Monday, July 6. to proceed in that direction. Late that night she received a text from Kimberly Nichols, one of the restaurant managers. “(Nichols) had been working with our skeleton crew nonstop,” recalled Edgell. “Her text said, ‘I know how we’re going to do this.’” The next day, Nichols presented Edgell with what they have come to call “the pallet plan.” Edgell posted a request for pallets on Facebook, and a former employee contacted her to say he could get all the pallets she would need. The next step was to create a wall of pallets linked by pieces of rope. Some of the pallets were painted and decorated with planters. A number of tables, some with umbrellas, were gathered and placed six feet apart. Lanterns from inside the restaurant were moved outside as well. The new outdoor dining space opened on June 5. Although weather that first night put a damper on business, the next day the weather cooperated, and the venue sold out for the evening. Now the outdoor dining area features 17 tables. Diners should wear masks to enter the area, and reservations are required. A limited menu including some dinner items is served Wednesdays through Sundays. Hours are 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 4 to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Curbside pickup and partial occupancy

Coconut oil is a great source of fat. Consuming fat helps you stay satisfied longer and also gives you a boost of energy. Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional)

In May, the seniors of Veritas Academy, a classical Christian school in Leola, presented and defended their capstone senior theses, completing not only a year’s worth of research and writing, but an academic career of honing their learning, research, logic, reasoning, and communication skills. In classical Christian education, grammar (the knowledge of facts), logic, and rhetoric comprise the three progressive stages students go through from kindergarten through 12th grade. With rhetoric being the final phase, graduating seniors must put their skills and knowledge to the test by choosing,

The 2020 senior thesis presentations looked quite different from previous years due to the shutdown measures imposed to stem the spread of COVID-19. Each student spent months choosing and extensively researching his or her topic and writing a comprehensive, minimum 20-page paper. This paper was then refined and then submitted to a group of panelists who are considered authorities with experience on the topic. Each student then gave a presentation summarizing his or her paper to an audience and the panelists, after which each panelist challenged the student with questions about his or her statements. Students were evaluated on their ability to defend their See Veritas pg 8

YWCA Seeks Nominations and professional endeavors while supporting, embodying, and complementing YWCA Lancaster’s mission. The Women of Achievement Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at noon. It may look a bit different this year as staff plan, observing the current guidelines for public gatherings. Regardless of how many people are able to gather in one room, four outstanding women in the community will be honored. A new category has been added for young women ages 16 to 20. The YWCA also wants to offer a special opportunity and recognition for women who

arguments, maintain poise, communicate effectively, and more in this required project. Veritas students also complete a junior thesis paper, presentation, and defense in their 11th-grade year, which must be centered on a theological topic and defended before a panel of pastors, professors, and teachers. They also complete formal classes in logic and rhetoric and continually work on these skills in all subjects, which often are taught using the Socratic method. Having the opportunity to engage in difficult dialogue, think on their feet, and even admit uncertainty or potential flaws in arguments with professionals in their fields of study gave these graduates practice in not only respectful dialogue and sound debate strategy, but also good listening skills.

Vacation Bible school (VBS) is an important part of summer for Grace Church at Willow Valley, 300 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, so rather than cancel it entirely when COVID-19 prompted a shutdown, the children’s ministry team opted for a different look. This year, “drive-through VBS will be presented in the form of a take-home activity kit, which families may pick up at the church from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 18. “The drive-through idea came from an article I read on wearekidmin.com, explained Bethany Hirschy, director of children’s ministries and communications. “A local church hosted a kids’ church drive-through where they handed out care packages containing snacks and a family game. We loved the idea, so we adapted it to fit VBS. Every family will receive bags filled with activity pages, craft kits, snack recipes, and other items. Adult involvement with the activities will be encouraged but not required. “Our main goal in vacation Bible school is to reach kids and families who don’t know Jesus, so we wanted to create something that is simple and easy to use and does not necessarily require parents to become a ‘VBS leader’ at home, Hirschy said. The title of this year’s VBS curriculum is “Incrediworld Amazement Park: A Thrill Ride Through God’s Creation. It is produced by Answers in Genesis (AiG) and is an adaptation of AiG’s 2012 curriculum. A link to Grace Church’s YouTube channel will be included with the activity bags so that VBS participants may view song playlists and other videos provided by AiG. “We have used Answers’ VBS over the
past few years because we have been so impressed with their curriculum, Hirschy said. “We know that we can trust that it will be biblically sound, gospel-centered, and created with excellence. Hirschy noted that she has been told that this will be the first time in more than 30 years of VBS at Grace Church that children

A golf outing on July 31 will benefit Strasburg-based INCREASE Youth Ministry, which offers activities such as bowling for students in grades six to 12.
“Our heart really is to just be available to the kids in this community. We want to walk through life with them, and we want folks to partner with us, said INCREASE Youth Ministry board secretary Karen Peters. INCREASE launched in 2011 as an offshoot of a church-affiliated youth center in Strasburg. Karen’s husband, Ron, has been the executive director since its beginning. Ron has an extensive background in youth ministry, and Karen is a kindergarten teacher. The couple is active at Threshold Church. Karen noted that while no particular church provides oversight to INCREASE, it has support and involvement from members of local congregations. The ministry is small, with about a dozen students in grades six to 12 from several school districts attending events. It lacks a physical location, so every Thursday evening, Ron and Karen, along with other volunteers, pick up attendees in Strasburg, head to a local restaurant for supper, and then spend a few hours at Camp Andrews in Holtwood playing and learning about God before returning students to their respective homes. “We like to get outside as much as we can, Karen remarked. “Camp Andrews is very generous to let us use their space. Once a month, the ministry hosts an outing neither on a Thursday nor at Camp Andrews. Past events have included bowling, roller skating, a ski trip, and music festivals. Consent forms signed by parents or guardians are required for every event. Although INCREASE primarily serves Lampeter-Strasburg students, young people from other districts are welcome to attend as well. “If there’s a parent willing to drive in and meet us halfway, we’re more than willing to work out a way to make that happen, Karen said. During the shutdown, the Thursday evening activities and the monthly excursions were canceled. The second annual golf tournament, originally set for May 8, was postponed to Friday, July 31. The tournament had been scheduled in May so it was not too close to the organization’s major fundraiser, a breakfast buffet and silent auction that regularly takes place in September, Karen said. The golf outing will be held at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Registration will open at 7 a.m., and the shotgun start will take place at 8 a.m. Morning refreshments will be offered before the round, and lunch will be available afterward. Karen noted that the method of service will be determined by what is safe at that time. A cost has been set to participate in the tournament. Tee box sponsorships are also available. Both registrations and sponsorships may be submitted using the form at https://in creaseyouth.com/golf/. Proceeds from the golf outing will help INCREASE Youth Ministry continue to serve local students. All of the activities are offered at no cost to participants. “We want them to hang out with us and hear about the hope of Christ at the same time, Karen said. She noted that many of the young people who attend INCREASE events are not affiliated with a local church. The ministry endeavors to provide students with a safe
place to be themselves, share their stories, and see Christian faith lived out in caring, compassionate ways. Obtaining a permanent facility is a priority, Karen related, as it would increase ministry opportunities. A capital campaign has not been created yet, and all donations currently go into the general fund. “We’re asking a lot, but the Lord’s been faithful, she said. Karen invites readers to pray for the ministry, to register for the golf tournament, and to mark their calendars for the breakfast banquet, which has been set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at Willow Street Mennonite Church. “Whatever it might look like, we’re going to make something happen that morning, she promised. For more information about INCREASE Youth Ministry, readers may call or text Ron at 717-575-8353 or visit https://in creaseyouth.com/.

of Jesus, she added. The shutdown has been challenging as the church had to move its services and programs online. The cessation of the human element provided by meeting together was the most difficult to endure, Hirschy said. However, she has seen some good come from this time. “We tend to do the things we’ve always done, just because we have always done them that way, and although that isn’t necessarily bad, we have been forced to rethink nearly everything that we do, causing us to look at why we do it and to consider if
