Sustaining nature

Katrina

Lefever, sustainable landscape coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), vividly remembers the first BioBlitz held at MCC in 2022. “Last year, we had it in September, and we held a pawpaw fest as well,” she recalled. “We planted pawpaws in the woods and had some fruit tasting.”

While the first blitz, organized by Lefever along with naturalists Lydia Martin, Cameala Freed, and Rita Tomassetti was held in the fall. Lefever believed a summer date would attract a wider age group. The second MCC BioBlitz and Nature Fest will be held on the MCC grounds at 21 S. 12th St., Akron, on Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to join a BioBlitz team, which will count insects and plant life using the iNaturalist app or pen and paper, should register at https://mcc.org/forms/2023 -mcc-bioblitz-nature-fest by Friday, July 7. The Nature Fest is open to the public, and it will include live music, art, and plant giveaways.

Each BioBlitz team will work with a naturalist to explore the MCC campus. “There’s a stream back in the woods, and there’s a micro meadow in the Welcoming Place, which hosts many butterflies,” said Lefever.

At the Nature Fest, there will be information tables, and visitors will have the opportunity to work at an art table overseen by Tomassetti. There will be a plant and plug giveaway of native plants. Lefever explained that a plug is a very small plant. “There is soil, but it’s mostly root,” she said. A musical group called Nodding Onion will also play. “(Nodding Onion) uses PlantWave technology, which is technology that attaches electrodes to a plant,” explained Lefever, who noted that every plant creates its own music.

Lefever has been at work to change the landscape at MCC since early 2021. “We made the move to ecological landscaping, which is trying to live with rather than against nature,” said Lefever, who noted that the effort is based on the work of Doug Tallamy, a professor in the Department of

Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, who has been studying the relationship between plant life and insects for decades. “Right now, our insect and bird numbers are plummeting,” said Lefever. “We have to make changes so we are not fighting nature but living

Music in the park

“It’s wonderful especially after being cooped up with COVID-19 to be out and about,” said Akron Borough manager Sue Davidson of the free Akron Summer Concert Series, which began in Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park in June. So far, Fire in the Glen has performed on June 11, and Rizzetta’s Tones took to the park stage on July 2. “The musical variety is nice (for people of all ages),” said Davidson of the series. All concerts are held on Sunday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m.

with nature.” To that end, Lefever has identified and removed invasive plants on the property and replaced them with native plants. “It has made a difference already,” she said.

Now, Lefever would like to share the changes with area residents via the BioBlitz. “We are aware of the amazing

bounty here,” she said. “There’s a wonderful number of native plants (on the property). We want to share that with the public and make them aware.” Readers who would like to learn more may visit https://mcc.org/get -involved/events/mcc-bioblitz -nature-fest.

Feeling the power

Diana Roth, area representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was thrilled to hear the response from a parent whose child was attending the New Holland Power Camp when Roth asked if her child was enjoying the experience. “I asked a parent today if her child had fun,” said Roth. “And she said, ‘Yes.’ She said her child’s only complaint was that this is the last day. I like to hear that.”

The New Holland camp, which was held from June 19 through 22,

is one of three held in the county this summer. The Lancaster camp, which attracted about 50 students from Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church from June 12 through 15. The Manheim camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church from Monday, July 10, through Thursday, July 13. Students ages 8 to 12 who would like to take part in that camp may sign up at www.lancasterfca.org /manheim-power-camp.

Up next in the lineup will be the Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble, which will play on July 9. The ensemble was created based on inspiration from the 20th-century community mandolin orchestra tradition. The quartet includes Greg Rohrer on mandolin, Kevin Neidig on mandolin and octave mandolin, Tom Cook on mandola, and Henry Koretzky on mandocello and mandolin. Vocals are provided by Cook, Koretzky, and Neidig.

The band is known for a repertoire that includes original tunes and arrangements from members of the group and local colleagues. Group members also play a variety of songs from the jazz, swing, bluegrass, old-time folk, and world music genres.

On July 30, Mitch and the Mood Swings will bring its renditions of 1960s, rock ’n’ roll, and Motown favorites to the park. Mitch Mohler, who has been performing for more than 50 years, and his band

like to “bring a smile” to the faces of audience members.

“This is the second year for the concert series,” said Davidson, who added that the law firm of Haggerty, Silverman & Justice is again sponsoring the series. The firm also sponsored last year’s concerts. “We are so happy about that. It’s a wonderful thing to do,” said Davidson.

Concerts in the park returned to the venue last year after many years of hiatus. Davidson credited council member and chairperson of community relations Bonnie Young with working to bring the concerts back. “This is one of the many things that she does throughout the year,” said Davidson. “She does such a wonderful job.”

After the 2022 concerts were well attended, organizers decided to change the starting time from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. “We are hoping to have a bigger crowd this

year because of the time (change),” said Davidson, who noted that the park is always busy, and many people who are there for other activities stop to enjoy the concerts. She added that attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic lunch to enjoy an economical

evening out. “It’s nice that a family can do something like that without spending a lot of money and be together with other people,” she said, noting that neighbors often meet up, while others may make new acquaintances. “Please come out to enjoy the park and the concert,” she invited.

Each camp begins at 9 a.m. each day and runs until 3:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme, including a Hawaiian shirt day and a crazy day. The overall theme of this year’s camps is “Greater,” based on John 3:30. Each day begins with worship featuring the worship band from the host church and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The worship team and speaker set the tone for the day,” said Roth. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time

before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport.

Roth said that the volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school coaches, and many serve for multiple weeks. At New Holland, students could choose to participate in basketball, football, field hockey, soccer, or lacrosse. Because the New Holland camp attracted nearly 150 students, half ate lunch while the other half met with their huddle leaders for Bible study. Both high school and middle school students serve as junior hud-

dle leaders.

“A huddle is five to seven students and a leader,” said Roth. “Huddle leaders are with campers leading, guiding, encouraging, all through camp.” Fifteen coaches and 51 huddle leaders took part in the New Holland camp. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, snack, and closing assembly.

“It is a faith-based camp,” noted Roth. “The whole rea-

The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into

biogas and grid-tied electricity. Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

HARTZ Physical Therapy

(PT) recently presented a check for $9,500 to Off the Streets, a nonprofit organization that has been active in helping homeless people in Lancaster County for more than 10 years. The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s second annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament, which was held on May 12 at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

The Spring Swing Golf Tournament was organized by HARTZ PT therapists and avid golfers Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro.
