“Isn’t he handsome?” Erika Herold practically gushed. Herold’s praise was not for a significant other or family member. Rather, it was bestowed on 6-month-old yellow Labrador named Woody who was happily rolling in the grass at Herold’s feet. Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, and other Woodstream employees raised $5,000 to sponsor Woody to become a United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) service dog. Woody is several months into the BARKS Prison Program, through which he is being trained by an inmate at Moshannon Valley Correction Center in Phillipsburg. While at the prison, Woody is living with his inmate handler around the clock. The inmate training program has proven to

be successful. Normally, inmates teach puppies up to 50 commands, but many dogs are reaching that goal ahead of schedule. On June 8, Woody, accompanied by UDS staff accountant Mary Langton, visited Woody’s sponsors when the corporation held a company picnic at its facility. Langton said that Woody will spend a total of 18 months working with a designated inmate. “Woody will come back to us for (his) final six months of training to refine the skills he will need to (work with) the client he is chosen (to serve),” explained Langton. Langton is pleased with Woody’s progress so far. “He is very smart, and he seems to bond quickly,” she said. As Woody lolled in the grass and employee sponsors rubbed his stomach, Langton noted, “He is not afraid of crowds.” Herold met Woody for the first time See Service Dog pg 3

Four days after being named 2018 recipient of the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award by Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, Lisa Wood, special education teacher at George Washington Elementary School in Lancaster, was still processing the experience. “I am still trying to find the words to express how honored I am,” said Wood. “I am still floating.” Wood received the award at a special event hosted by GOTR at The Inn at Leola Village on the evening of May 31. There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly than utilizing the foster care system. To help raise funds to support the work of Safe Families, BCS will hold a golf tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, See Safe Families pg 5

Baby “Clark” was born while his mother was incarcerated. Bethany Christian Services’ Safe Families for Children program was able to provide Clark with a host home until his mother was released to care for him. The program is one of many that will be supported by the organization’s annual golf tournament on Sept. 26.

Registration via www.active.com, which will include a nominal fee, will close on July 13. Readers may also register by downloading a form from www.elancolibrary.org or picking one up at the library. At 10 a.m., families are invited to the Terre Hill Park for a free Story Walk involving a number of consecutive story stations. “The Story Walk will be an approximately 1-mile walk through the park,” said Smith, who added that Carla Castro, assistant director and youth services librarian, will lead the walk. “Stations will have printed out pages from a story book, and we will read each page and (complete) the story as we walk,” explained Smith. The run will take place on the third day of Terre Hill Days, an annual event held in the Terre Hill Park that includes live music, food, rides, and games. Terre Hill Days will run from Thursday, July 19, through Sunday, July 22.

Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library, has long been a runner, but she has never directed a race, until now. “I am a little disappointed that I won’t be actually running (the Shoe-Fly), because I will be organizing the race,” said Smith. Despite wishing she could also run the race, Smith is excited to be putting together the 2018 Shoe-Fly because last year she wanted to run the race and learned that it was not scheduled. In 2017, Smith was hoping to run the trifecta, then organized by the Garden Spot Cross Country Booster Club. The trifecta included the Farmers 5K, held each April; the Shoe-Fly 5 held during Terre Hill Days; and the Ox Trot, held during Bowmansville Days. “I couldn’t find registration for the Shoe-Fly,” said Smith. “I learned that the booster club would only be holding the Farmers 5K.” Smith also learned that Christian Taylor, husband of Andi Taylor, president of the Friends of the ELANCO Library, had become the race director for the 2017 Ox Trot. “Christian said, ‘Heather, you could (direct the Shoe-Fly) as a fundraiser for the library.’”

Smith took his words to heart, and the first Shoe-Fly 5 presented by the ELANCO Library will be held on Saturday, July 21, beginning at 8 a.m. The run will step off from the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill, adjacent to the Terre Hill Park. Packet pickup and registration on the day of the event will take place from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Parking and restroom facilities will be available at the park. Smith said the Shoe-Fly course, which will be the same as it was in the past, is challenging because it is hilly, and the weather tends to be warm at the time of year it is held. The 5-miler offers a variety of hills cutting through Lancaster County farmland. The first mile is fairly flat. The second mile has the first notable hill, with the second climb occurring at about 3.5 miles. Those climbs are followed by a final flat mile through town. Because of the steep inclines, water stations will be strategically placed along the route. Refreshments will be available after the race. In addition, the Terre Hill Days committee will hold an a la carte breakfast at the park pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. that day. The race will offer prizes to the first three male and female runners to cross the finish line. Prizes will also be given to male and female Pictured on front: Heather runners who finish first through Smith, director of the

when UDS held a sponsor meetand-greet event just before Woody left for Moshannon. “This is the first time we have sponsored a service dog, said Herold, adding that the idea was brought to the company by an employee whose spouse is associated with UDS. During the training period, Herold receives updates concerning Woody, which she passes along to employees. One of the privileges sponsors appreciate is the honor of helping to choose a moniker for their designated pup. “We had a company contest to name him, said Herold, who passed along the three suggestions that received the most votes to UDS. “(Because UDS staff members) don’t know what disabilities the person he is matched with will have, they consider names for how easily they can be pronounced, so his name will work with anyone who is assigned to him, Herold said, adding that she was glad “Woody was chosen because it reflects the company name. Herold said that when company staff first heard about the service dog sponsorship program, they were intrigued. “We said, ‘Wow, this is something we want to do,’ she shared. “It’s a win-win. Herold explained that the employee sponsors were happy to know they are helping the inmate who is training the dog because that person receives the opportunity to become certified as a trainer and gain competence in an area. “When he comes out (of prison, the inmate) has training to (work with) service dogs. It gives him a niche skill, said Herold. Of course, Herold is most excited about the chance Woody has to positively affect the life of a person with a disability. “He is going to be a lifeline, said Herold. “(Woody)

John Styer, one of the organizers of Terre Hill Days, places great importance on the caliber of the acts he lines up to entertain attendees at the annual four-day event. “We like to keep (the entertainment) fresh, so we have lots of new (performances) we are looking forward to (this year),” stated Styer. This year’s Terre Hill Days will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 19 through 22. The fun will kick off on July 19 at 5 p.m., when the rides, games, and food vendors will open. Magic by Jonathan will begin at 6:30 p.m. A strolling variety show by Crickett the Entertainer will start at 7 p.m. Face painting by donation will be available for children near the main stage. Styer stated that this year’s event will include expanded food offerings, such as barbecue. Funnel cakes, ice cream, and other traditional fare will also be available for purchase. There will also be more variety offered in the amusement rides at the park. Wristbands entitling the wearer to unlimited rides may be purchased for July 19 to be used between 6 and 9 p.m. In 2017, the organizing committee planned a local music night to open the event, and the idea proved so popular it will return this year on July 19 with Rugged Cross, featuring local pastor Keith Blackwell, at 6:30 p.m. and the country gospel

sounds of The Martin Sisters Band at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, July 20, the event will open at 5 p.m. and a pie-eating competition will be held at 5:30 p.m. The annual classic car cruise will commence at 6 p.m., and the magic and fun of the Insanity Factor will take center stage at 6:30 p.m. Strolling hula hoop entertainment by Acts of Jennius will be ongoing in the park from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Styer stated that interactive hula hoop fun will be an option for children. According to Styer, attendees have often requested a specific West Virginia show band play at the venue. “Rick K and the Allnighters play music from the ’60s through to the ’90s,” said Styer. The band will play at 7 p.m. On Saturday, July 21, the ELANCO Library will hold the Shoe-Fly 5-mile race at 8 a.m., followed by a book walk in the park. An a la carte breakfast will be held at the pavilion at 9 a.m., and an arts and crafts fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Games, rides, and food stands will open at 11 a.m. Entertainment on July 21 will begin at 11 a.m. with Marty Loose and One Voice. John Collins will stroll the park with his accordion from 1 until 3:30 p.m. The annual Outhouse Races will coincide with a visit from Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot, at 1 p.m. Outhouse teams may register up until shortly before the races begin. The Miron Brothers will play folk, country, and Americana on the side stage at 2 p.m., and at

Terre Hill Days will bring entertainment, a car show, and an expanded variety of rides to the Terre Hill Park from July 19 through 22. Organizers have lined up a number of musical acts, along with the traditional Outhouse Races, arts and crafts show, and fireworks. 3:30 p.m., an airplane will drop sweets from the sky for a candy scramble. Old Time Country Music will return to the venue to play at 4 p.m. Mr. Sneakers will perform illusions designed for people of all ages to enjoy at 6 p.m., and Chad Reinert, a former county native who now makes his home in Nashville, will take to the main stage to play country music at 7 p.m. Reinert’s performance will be followed by a fireworks display sponsored by local residents. “None of the funds raised by

Terre Hill Days go to (pay for) fireworks,” noted Styer. On July 22, a church service will be held in the park at 10:30 a.m., followed by a community picnic at noon. Attendees are invited to bring a covered dish to share. Entertainment during the picnic will be provided by Nicholas DiSanto, the one-man band. “DiSanto makes his own instruments from scratch,” shared Styer. Readers who would like more information may visit www.terrehilldays.com or call 717-445-4581.

The local chapter opened in Dauphin County in 2011, and the Lancaster branch began serving clients about five years ago. The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host families within the chapter. “We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those

utilizing the service,” said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis.” According to Romberger, advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved,” said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family.” In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. The organization works closely with all parties involved to provide support until the crisis has passed, an average of 45 days. A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time,” said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network.” Romberger

added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment for an illness, such as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right

out of the hospital when he was (only) four days old,” said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as

GOTR Coach from pg 1 disabilities. “Seeing the change in the girls was really inspiring,” said Wood. “I wanted to be part of that.” In 2015, Wood began coaching at Washington. During the spring season, the two Washington teams boasted a total of 33 girls. “I rallied the girls by taking them to my classroom, and I told them about (GOTR) and showed them videos,” said Wood of the enrollment. “The girls wanted to be part of this amazing thing.” One of those girls, Alashana Ramos, nominated Wood for the Ellen Award. Ramos had tragically lost a cousin this year, and she wrote about how Wood was there for her during that difficult time.

West, along with Lancaster GOTR executive director Carrie Johnson; board member Kate Mullen; West’s daughters, Alex and Regan; and Doutrich, formed the selection committee that chose Wood from more than 60 nominees. According to Johnson, coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, principals, staff members, colleagues, spouses, family members, friends, parents, and the girls who make up the GOTR teams. Wood’s relationship with GOTR began in 2012 when she started helping to coach Team Empowered, composed of girls in the School District of Lancaster with physical and intellectual

Wood said she has been especially impressed with components of the GOTR curriculum. “(Understanding) empathy is a huge strategy in the (GOTR) toolbox,” she said. “How to make a friend and how to be a good friend is another great lesson.” Wood also lauded the requirement that teams complete a community impact project. “Our community impact project (involved) a third-grader who was severely burned the day after Christmas,” said Wood. “Our girls decided to put together a sunshine basket for her.” After reaching out to the child’s parents, the coaches learned that the girl would need bedding and that she loves unicorns. “The teams held a flower sale and raised $305 that went toward

Wood has chosen the Washington Elementary TEAM mentor partnership program. She will donate her winnings to that program through the Lancaster Education Foundation. Wood also received a special bracelet. Wood noted that she believes she has benefited from coaching GOTR teams. “This program is life changing, and not just for the girls but for the coaches too,” said Wood. “It has made me more accountable (because) I am teaching these girls skills and strategies, and I need to be using them myself. (I wish) I had had these coaches as leaders (when I was a girl).” Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Group Plans Data Reveal The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) will host a Data Reveal on Wednesday, July 18, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Chamber, 115 E. King St., Lancaster. For the past two years, the CPBGH has focused on creating a data cohort for health care data in the region. CPBGH will share the following categories of information with attendees: the demographics of the population represented, chronic disease prevalence, cost of care and employee cost share, as well as information on costs by provider. CPBGH will also share its path forward for access to its Community Lens view of its data and plans to work with other health care coalitions to enhance benchmarking opportunities. The public is invited to attend. There is a registration fee, and CPBGH members will receive a discount. Registration will include breakfast. To register, readers may visit www.cpbgh.org.

The second of five free concerts in the Sounds of Strasburg series will take place at the Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The open-air concert, which will be held in the park’s amphitheater, will feature local bands Featherburn and The Ultramarines. Featherburn will open the evening’s performances. This will be the band’s second gig at the park; the dynamic group was a hit when it performed there last year. Featherburn is a trio led by Strasburg resident John “Milo Milosich, who plays accordion and guitar and sings. Tom Doorly is the bassist, and James Munster plays guitar. “Our visitors loved their quirky, accordion-powered, theatrical folk, punk, and eastern European rock show, shared Dale Kaufman, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation. “Their show will be sure to please as it will be a high energy, cosmic folk-romp, party-starting set. The Ultramarines will be the second act of the night.

“We are very excited to bring The Ultramarines to Strasburg, especially since James (Wolpert) grew up in Strasburg and many here rooted for him when he was a semifinalist on NBC-TV’s fifth season of ‘The Voice,’ Kaufman said. Wolpert is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, and he is joined by drummer Aaron Shiflet and bassist Dustin Cain. “You’ll hear this talented trio merge psychedelic, punk, surf, and blues influences into a dynamic sound that will surely create a diverse live performance for our town, Kaufman remarked. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Those who wish to eat a preshow picnic meal may use picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. “We encourage our visitors to patronize our food vendors, Kaufman commented, noting that an assortment of food, cold beverages, and Italian water ice will be available for purchase. The concert series will continue with shows on Saturdays, Aug. 4

The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club will host two picnics for those wanting to find out more about the service club and to meet current club members. The informal picnics will be held on Wednesdays, July 18 and Aug. 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the pavilion at the Strasburg Community Park, Precision Avenue, Strasburg. Sertoma is a combination of the words “Service to Mankind. The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, chartered more than 20 years ago, is one of hundreds of such clubs across the nation that are unified with the purpose of serving their respective communities and improving the quality of life for local folks in need. Members of the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club typically meet for a casual dinner once a month and raise funds by making and selling subs and helping to direct guests to parking at the Strasburg Rail Road Company’s Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine. Since the club’s inception, the majority of the funds raised by the Strasburg Sertomans annually is used to help maintain the

Strasburg Community Park. In addition, the group has contributed to many other local nonprofit entities such as the Strasburg-Heisler Library, the Strasburg Scout House, Santa’s Helpers, and the Strasburg Cemetery. The club also sponsors scholarships for Lampeter-Strasburg graduates who have communication disorders or who are going to college to help those with hearing or speech challenges. One major contribution made to the community is the organization and implementation of the annual Memorial Day Parade in Strasburg. The proceeds from poppy sales at the parade are donated to local veterans organizations. “This is a great organization for someone who is not interested in getting a lot of public acclamation, said Strasburg Area Sertoma Club president Lynda Houck. “We are not about formalities and attending endless committee meetings. We are a small but mighty group that is unassuming. Our focus and energy are directed on action. We get things done and

MONSTER TRUCK RIDES & PIT PARTY

The Mayor’s Commission to Combat Poverty’s One Good Job strategic plan to cut poverty in half in Lancaster City by 2032 cites a Franklin & Marshall College report that notes that there are “about 1,000 single, working women raising families and living in poverty.” According to the plan, connecting these women to full-time employment at sustainable wages would reduce poverty in Lancaster City by 20 to 25 percent. To that end, the Community Action Partnership (CAP) will kick off a public relations and action campaign designed to encourage women to consider new or different possibilities when thinking about their careers. The campaign, under the working title “We Can Do It,” will kick off this fall with digital advertisements encouraging women working in jobs with low wages or low advancement potential to see possibility in nontraditional career fields with a need for employees, such as welding, construction, and machining. The campaign’s call-to-action will be to connect with a CAP Navigator to map out a training or employment plan with community partners and local employers. This Navigator will address all the barriers in their household, including but not limited to transportation and child care, and will walk with them on a journey towards bettering their financial standing for their family. To find the perfect song for this campaign that reflects the spirit and heart of the Lancaster community, CAP will host a songwriting competition with a prize of $1,000 and professional studio time for the songwriter/s to record their winning song. Up to three finalists, selected by a panel of CAP staff and community members, will perform their songs live at CAP’s Block Party on Thursday, Aug. 30, (or, if event is rained out, on Friday, Aug. 31). The deadline for submission is Tuesday, July 31. Rules and regulations, as well as suggestions on how to get started writing the perfect song, are available at www.caplanc.org.

LMHS Receives Award Tracy Linn, traffic safety specialist for the Center for Traffic Safety in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, recently presented an award to Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) for displaying the greatest improvement in the 2017-18 Seat Belt Challenge from fall 2017 to spring 2018. The Center for Traffic Safety collected data on students using seat belts as they left campus in the fall and the spring. During that time, student seat belt use improved from 81 percent to 95 percent. For this achievement, the high school received an award of $500 for vehicular safety education and the use of a photo booth at a school function. Geoff Groff, the school’s driver education teacher, and principal Elvin Kennel accepted the award on behalf of the school.

Tammy Dreihaup, teacher at Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) in Ephrata, recently received a Golden Apple Award, the highest level of recognition bestowed on teachers in the Diocese of Harrisburg. Bishop Gainer presented the award to her at a banquet held at the Diocesan Center in Harrisburg. Dreihaup has taught at OMPH since 1998, serving as a classroom aide, a resource teacher, and the school librarian. She currently serves as the school’s instructional support teacher, having established the program in 2004. She also oversees the Student Support Team, is involved in the Middle States Accreditation process, serves on the school safety committee, and volunteers numerous hours at both OMPH School and OMPH Parish.
