“A Night of Gospel Music,” featuring the group Heaven 4 Shore, will be held on the ballfield at Woodcrest Retreat Center, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. Funds raised by the event will help lower camping costs for children who take part in Woodcrest’s summer programs. music in 1993, has traveled many miles over the years singing Southern gospel songs. The group formed with a passion to share how God’s love and forgiveness are given freely when the gift of Christ is accepted. Heaven 4 Shore members have long held to a commitment to doing the best possible job every time they sing and trusting the Lord to do the rest. Along with the concert, a chicken barbecue meal, featuring a leg and thigh, a baked potato, baked beans, a bun, coleslaw, a baked item, and a beverage, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Woodcrest Retreat dining hall. “Come and enjoy a meal out,” invited Martin, who added that following the meal, attendees can relax in the outdoors in their favorite lawn chair while listening to the concert. member of the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and is an ambassador for Stop the Traffik. Burge noted that author Patrick Lencioni will speak about the dynamics of teams. “He is one (speaker) that (attendees) want back every year,” noted Burge. Other speakers will include pastor Craig Groeschel; entertainment marketer Bozoma Saint John; author and leadership coach Jo Saxton; speaker and researcher Jason Dorsey; Aja Brown, mayor of the city of Compton, Calif.; fashion design founder and women’s advocate Liz Bohannon; social entrepreneur Dr. Krish Kandiah; author and leadership consultant Todd Henry; author, blogger, and entrepreneur Jia Jiang; former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss; and author and producer DeVon Franklin. Burge noted that joining a localized host site has networking advantages for those who attend. “In the Ephrata community, there are so many businesses and churches (attending), and there are so many people to rub shoulders with that you never thought (you might meet).” Sahd added that last year’s event drew more than 300 attendees and that this year’s registration number is quickly approaching that mark. “ We really want to be a resource to leaders in our community at any level,” he noted, adding that all types of leaders can benefit from GLS, ranging from those leading in their own homes to those who lead large organizations. “For folks who don’t know they’re leaders, but are curious, this will inspire them,” he said. “We feel it is a unique way to resource the community, and we are uniquely equipped to provide this.” Sahd added that local organizations that plan to bring employees to the venue include CrossNet Ministries of New Holland and the Ephrata School District administrative team. Since many of the speakers will be conversing on their writing topics, LCBC is prepared to help attendees who want more content than what is available on the screen. “This is just good information,” said Burge. “You receive a notebook to take tons of notes, (but) we have a bookstore where books related to the content may be purchased.” GLS at LCBC Ephrata will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration on Aug. 8. Sanctuary doors will open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 and 9, and speakers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Because the simulcast originates in the Central time zone, the event will run until 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 8. Organizers encourage interested individuals to register for GLS prior to the event at www.LCBC church.com/GLS, but day-of registration will also be available. Readers who have questions may call 717-733-0711.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital has launched a sexual assault forensic nurse examiner (SAFE) program to care for and treat local victims of sexual assault. Nurse examiners on the team have undergone 54 hours of specialized training. The team is trained to conduct a medical forensic examination of victims, collecting and documenting evidence, and to serve as expert witnesses

in any resulting legal proceedings. The examiners collaborate with law enforcement officials and counselors to provide coordinated care to victims. Training includes sessions with live actors who teach the examiners how to approach and treat sexual assault victims. Vanessa Smith, emergency department clinical lead and coordinator of the SAFE program at WellSpan Ephrata Community

Hospital, noted that in addition to documenting the physical and medical effects of the assault, the team members will also help the victim to obtain counseling, emotional support, and appropriate follow-up care. SAFE nurses will be available around-the-clock in the WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital emergency department. Similar programs also operate at other WellSpan hospitals in Adams,

Lebanon, and York counties. The program was funded by $83,000 in support from the Ephrata Community Health Foundation, through gifts from community donors and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital physicians and staff. The Ephrata Community Health Foundation is a communitybased, not-for-profit organization that exists to inspire gifts and grants to support the health and well-being of northern Lancaster County residents.

effort that brings together SPC, the local arm of the U.S. Veterans Affairs, the West Lampeter Police Department, and Morr’s Shooting Range and Gun Shop. SPC, a creation of MHALC, is working in partnership with other local entities to put gun lock kits in the hands of each person who purchases a gun in hopes of preventing both suicides and unintentional deaths by firearm. Leckow explained that the time of purchase is a crucial moment. “(If the clerk says,) ‘We are trying to prevent suicide by firearm, and we’d like you to accept this (free) lock’ … at that possible point of interaction that may … dissuade someone having mental health issues (from using) a firearm against themself,” explained Leckow. Leckow noted that MHALC would like to see gun shop owners and personnel receive QPR Suicide Prevention Training. QPR stands for “Question Persuade Refer.” Training will teach personnel to recognize warning signs that an individual is in suicide crisis and to ask questions and refer that person for help. MHALC will hold training sessions in the organization’s Lancaster County office, 245 Butler Ave., Suite 203, Lancaster, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 2, Oct. 4, and Dec. 6. Registration is required to attend. Interested individuals may call 717-3977461 to register. Leckow noted that customized and abbreviated training can be arranged as well. Beginning Thursday, Aug. 1, gun lock kits will be available at the MHALC office upon request to mha@mhalancaster.org. On June 9, American Heritage Girls (AHG) Troop PA0412 held its Court of Awards at Lake View Bible Church in Manheim. AHG is a character development organization for girls ages 5 to 18 with emphases on faith, service, and fun. AHG Troop PA0412 meets every other Monday evening from September through May at Lake View Bible Church. During the Court of Awards ceremony, the girls received the badges, patches, and service stars that they had earned since the start of 2019. Service stars are awarded for different hours of service depending on the girl’s age. Troop PA0412 had a combined total of 225 hours of service, and 110 badges were earned by completing requirements set by the national organization. The evening opened and closed with a flag ceremony led by the girls. The Sacagawea Award, a special level recognition for the Tenderhearts (ages 6 to 9), was awarded to Jamie Black of Leola, Jocelyn Coulson of Lancaster, Emma Creighton of Manheim, Lylii Funk of Elizabethtown, Lila King of Lancaster, and Delaina Rohrer of Lancaster. To earn the Sacagawea Award, girls must earn at least one badge from each of the six frontiers: Heritage, Family Living, the Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal Well-Being, and Science and Technology; perform a minimum of five hours of service for each year of participation; attend multiple special events; make a presentation showcasing what they love about AHG and display it in a public place for two weeks; and attend a meeting and special event with the

Explorers (ages 9 to 12). Finally, they must participate in an interview called the Board of Review with three or four adults from the troop. Mya Higgins earned the Harriet Tubman Award, which is the level award for Pioneers (ages 12 to 14). Mya is the daughter of Brad and Tammy Higgins of Lancaster. For this award, a girl must earn a minimum of one badge from each frontier at the Pioneer level, perform a minimum of 15 hours of service for each year of participation, attend multiple special events, and mentor a younger unit or group by holding a regular meeting as well as planning and organizing a special event for that group. Additionally, she must spend a minimum of 10 hours in planning, organizing, and implementing a multi-troop or community outreach activity. The final step is a Board of Review interview. Mya worked to help the younger girls earn their PRAY patch by holding a regular meeting during which she taught the Parable of the Fig Tree and prepared a corresponding craft for the Explorers, Tenderhearts, and Pathfinders. For her special event, Mya planned a Veterans Day flag ceremony. Veterans and their families were invited to stand front and center to receive a rose

Mya also shared the history of Veterans Day, including how it was added to the national calendar. Mya’s multi-troop outreach project involved teaching 21 girls, ranging from ages 5 to 12, at a Heimlich Heroes event. Each participant received a certificate of completion after passing both a written test and successful handson application of the maneuver, which included simulating the rescue of a person in need and self-help. “This project was meaningful to me because I am here today as a result of a Heimlich hero, who saved

my mom when she was a little girl. When everyone else panicked, he acted with swift, calm resolve,” Mya shared. “Years later, my mama saved my little sister’s life by responding similarly. Additionally, my papa has always taught me it is better to be prepared and not need it than to need it and not be prepared. I suppose I saw a parallel between the two. I am grateful for the privilege to have shared a life-saving skill with those younger girls.” To learn more about American Heritage Girls or to find a troop to become involved in, interested individuals may visit https://american heritagegirls.org.
