Driving Forward HVMI Plans Golf Outing By Ann Mead Ash

Kyle Robinson, executive director of Handi*Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), has a lot on his plate. Not too long ago, the ministry purchased the land at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, and work to receive approvals to locate camps, retreat centers, and day programs there is underway, with HVMI planning a capital fund campaign to begin in the fall. With all that looming, Robinson is well aware of the importance of maintaining the general budget. “Our golf outing is driving programs that are happening now,” explained Robinson. “Our general fund should be strong as we go into our capital campaign. We need to appropriately handle all the things God has given us.”

HVMI will hold its 17th annual golf outing at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Contests will include a hole-in-one competition, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, straightest drive, and a putting competition. Registration and light fare will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow the round. HVMI offers recreational camps and more to people with disabilities and also includes Minds Renewed, BASIS, and REST Ministries. Plans for the land include a camp featuring a chapel/ dining hall, a cabin, a pavilion, and more. Recreational features that HVMI hopes to add will include a pool, a playground, a basketball court, and playing fields with ADA-compliant paved walking paths. Currently, the ministry rents two camps to offer seven weeks of See Golf Outing pg 5

A Sweet Night Of Support

A Summer Experience With Purpose By Ann Mead Ash

Jennifer Eaton, manager of youth services with VisionCorps of Lancaster, laid out the rules early for the campers who took part in Camp Cool from June 17 to 21. The campers, each of whom has a vision impairment, were told that they were not allowed to come to Eaton and say, “I can’t (do something).” “They could say, ‘I need help’ or ‘I’m scared to do this,’” said Eaton. The idea behind the banned phrase was to encourage the 8- to 12-year-old students from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties to creatively utilize the expanded core curriculum that camp leaders had set out for the week. “(The curriculum is) a set See Camp Cool pg 2

to bolster social confidence with ice breaker games on the first day of camp. “We will work on socialization all week,” said Eaton, who noted that a train ride to Harrisburg was on the agenda to promote use of public transportation. “We will visit the State Museum, tour the Capitol, and ride the riverboat cruise, and … they will experience what it’s like to call for an Uber.” Eaton noted that vision-impaired campers can utilize a smartphone using VoiceOver. The campers also shopped for groceries. “(Campers received) a list of what they need to purchase, and they needed to locate the items within the store,” said Eaton, explaining that they planned to use Aira, a new technology available in certain public locations. “(Campers) can call in and get a live person who uses the camera on the phone to guide them through the grocery store,” explained Eaton, who added that campers would be encouraged to learn the basic layout and locations of types of food in grocery stores and to not shy away from asking clerks for help. During lunch at Wegman’s, campers were required to ask for large print and braille menus at the café. Eaton noted that money management would be tested. “Each (camper) will have cash

of tools that children with vision loss need to have in order to lead successful, independent lives,” explained Eaton, who added that the curriculum focuses on several areas: social interaction; transportation; orientation and mobility; recreation; assistive technology; independent living skills; career education; compensatory skills, which comprise reading and writing in different communication modes such as braille and large print; visual efficiency skills; and self-advocacy, such as asking for assistance when needed. All of the activities the campers participated in helped them to develop in these areas. On June 17, the campers journeyed to Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which is in Reinholds and is overseen by Laura Rutledge. “(Horseback riding is) a great recreational activity for children with vision loss (because of) the sensory input, the connection with the animal, and the sense of independence they get from riding,” said Eaton. “The (campers) think they are here just to play with the horse, but it’s so much more than that.” Camp Cool also included a kayaking trip to Indiantown Gap, where the group worked with Team River Runner in a program that was designed for veterans. Drew would like to see his family utilize their abilities to help children on the border of Texas and Mexico. “The solution lies in helping those countries (that people are migrating from),” he said. “Something needs to be done, and we are available to (go there).” Sweet treats that will be served at the event will include a variety of donated desserts - some in a buffet line and others at food stations. Guatemala, and Drew travels to Honduras to help children there. A recent addition to the ministry includes connecting with a missionary family working with Belizean individuals who have hearing loss. The new ministry will focus on pregnant teenage girls and new mothers. In Chicago, Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala, works with children in crisis through Reborn Ministries and a local school. The Metcalfs have also taken in orphaned children who need extra help or who are aging out of the orphanage and need to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew, who added that a 20-year-old girl who was with the family for nine months recently graduated into living and working on her own. More than half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help.

In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s ecommerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. Giant Direct provides customers with a wide assortment of products with

Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications. To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription. For more information on the KidCents program, readers may visit www.kid cents.com. Additional information about Rite Aid can be found at www.riteaid.com.

Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.” When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables

replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill. Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live. The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of See Home pg 9

The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223-225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building,

formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped

Exhibit To Spotlight Tie-Dye Art “Tie-Dye With a Twist,” an eclectic collection of tie-dyed fabric designs from award-winning tie-dye artist Michael Martelli, will be featured at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, during August. The public is invited to experience the exhibit on opening night during a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2. Martelli’s work takes tie-dye to the gallery exhibition scene. Using a variety of media, Martelli presents his artistically crafted tie-dyes in new ways. Pieces are presented traditionally as fabric and also as hard pieces with the fabric stretched over wood and finished with a hard resin coating. Martelli decided to try his hand at tiedye while recovering from a series of health crises. As his skills improved, he began to find new ways to approach his art and build his understanding of the

Programs Will Spotlight Local History LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, has announced a number of upcoming events and programs. For more information, readers may visit www.lancasterhistory.org. The African American Heritage Walking Tour will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tours will depart from the Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. Participants will learn about Lancaster’s abolitionists, Underground Railroad agents, religious leaders, and entrepreneurs on a tour of 14 historic sites in downtown Lancaster. Tickets are available day-of. “I Carry It About With Me Always: The Letters of Buck & Mary,” a living history program at President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, will be held on Aug. 3, with tours at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. In this first-person presentation, old college friends James Buchanan “Buck” Henry and Christian Scharff catch up during a holiday at Lake George. Visitors will learn about the tension between Buck and his uncle, President James Buchanan, and how that tension drove him to visit Lake George in the first place. However, in the midst of his respite from the political world, Buck has left his sweetheart, Mary, behind. Visitors will hear the correspondence between Buck and Mary and learn more about their relationship and how letter-writing enabled them to remain close. Summer Story Time at LancasterHistory will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. A museum educator will read aloud from a book centered on a historical theme and then lead a craft inspired by the theme. Summer Story Time is open to all children, though it is

recommended for those ages 4 through 9. To register for the free program, readers may visit www.lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633. The 2019 summer internship graduation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 5 p.m. at LancasterHistory. Seven college interns will present on the projects they have completed over the course of the summer under the supervision of LancasterHistory’s staff in five museum departments. The project presentations will be followed by a brief graduation ceremony and presentation of awards. “Creating Habitats for Butterflies,” part of the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at LancasterHistory. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum, the program will feature York County Master Gardener Deb Carman explaining how individuals can create habitats for butterflies in all their life stages, how native plants impact butterflies, and how to employ butterfly-friendly gardening techniques. Advance tickets are recommended as at-door tickets are not guaranteed. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 717-392-4633. Separate fees have been set for adults age 18 and up and for children age 17 and under. The program will be free for members of the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum (registration required). “Go At Your Own Pace” Saturday Tours at Wheatland will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 31, with tour entries every 15 minutes from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Guides will be stationed throughout the presidential mansion. The ticket price also includes admission to the museum exhibitions at LancasterHistory.

Students Seek Host Families ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE), in cooperation with community high schools around the USA, is looking for local families to host boys and girls, ages 15 to 18, from a variety of countries, including Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, and others. ASSE students come to practice their English and experience American culture, such as food, sports, shopping, etc. The students also love to share their own culture and language with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a

rich cultural experience. In addition, ASSE students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident, and liability insurance. ASSE students are academically selected into the program, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries, and personal interests. To become a host family or to find out how to become involved with ASSE in the local community, readers may call the ASSE Eastern Regional Office at 800677-2773 or visit www.host.asse .com to choose a student and begin a host family application.
