Building To Meet Needs

GOTR Fall Registration To Open

By Ann Mead Ash

Seniors looking for retirement community apartments that allow couples to remain together longer even as they face health issues will find more options in the Wheat Ridge Apartments to be constructed at Fairmount, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. When the organization broke ground for the 45-unit building, which will offer 11 different floor plans, on July 23, president/CEO Jerry Lile shared how Fairmount has been paying attention to the needs of potential residents. “Over the past two years, we heard from those on our waiting list that we should create more independent units because of growing demand in our market,” he said. “We have listened, and after numerous planning sessions, we are ready to begin.” See Fairmount pg 10

Bookworms Invited To Frolic When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” See Bookworm Frolic pg 2

During the spring 2018 semester, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster boasted teams in every school district in the county. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expects about 850 girls in elementary and middle school to sign up to benefit from the program in the new school year, noting that many of those will be introduced to the new curriculum, available to girls in the third- through fifthgrade program this fall. Girls who take part in the fall session will complete See GOTR pg 8

Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact Weaver-Kreider at 717393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org.

Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. Millers became more aware of how to live a healthier lifestyle. As a result of this new knowledge, Christ opened his first store in 1968 on the family farm. Ten years later, the store moved into its second building, which encompassed approximately 3,000 square feet. In 2007, the store was able to move into the current 10,000-square-foot building. This building features skylights, which provide ample light during the daylight hours; gas lights for evening hours as needed; and a solar hot water system on the roof.

The family-owned and -operated store is stocked with fresh, organic produce, as well as local milk, cheese, and raw milk. The aisles house bulk dried fruits, nuts, various beans, seeds and grains, special flour, gluten-free snacks, pasta, and more. Christ noted that the store will soon carry fresh (not frozen) local organic grass-fed meat. The store’s offerings also include local raw honey, Pennsylvania maple syrup, and a large variety of spices, as well as fruit juices, coconut oil, groceries, vitamins, health and beauty aids, herbs,

Paradise Bible Fellowship Schedules Block Party By Ann Mead Ash

Troybilt Rototiller

In the summer of 1953, when a group of Paradise residents purchased the former Episcopal church at 3092 Lincoln Highway East, located at the corner of Route 30 and Singer Avenue in Paradise, the new congregation began holding tent meetings in the parking lot. Fast forward more than 60 years, and Paradise Bible Fellowship Church is still inviting members of the community to connect in the church parking lot, but this time the event is the church’s annual block party. The 2018 Paradise Bible Fellowship Church block party will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature free food, games, and entertainment. Last year, the block party became a kickoff event for the church’s 5-Day Club, a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship, which will be held at the church this year from Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. each day. ages 5 to 12 are welcome at the 5-Day Club, which will offer Bible lessons, memory verses, songs, games, prizes, and other fun activities. Last year, up to 15 children attended the club, and organizers hope to see up to 40 this year. The theme of the Aug. 4 block party is “For Such a Time as This. Pastor Mark Morrison noted that the church members want the community to know that the church is aware of the challenges that families face and that the church will strive to provide help and comfort. Morrison listed issues including financial difficulties, family problems, and substance abuse among those challenges. “We want to be available (to offer help and safety), he stated. “We know everyone can’t be here on Sunday morning, but our desire is to connect (with area residents). He added that the church aims to be a community that displays Christ’s love. According to Sue Homsher, who organizes the 5-Day Club and the church’s Wednesday night program during the school year, games at the block party will include mini golf, whack-afrog, a sponge throw, and more.

Members of Paradise Bible Fellowship Church who are planning the church’s sixth annual block party on Aug. 4 include (from left) pastor Mark Morrison, Sue Homsher, Nancy Grossman, and Richard Grossman. The event will include free entertainment, food, games, and face painting. Children who participate in the games will receive tickets for prizes. A bounce house and dunk tank will be on-site, and crafts and face painting will be offered. Entertainment will be provided by The DKers, a team of jugglers who will perform at noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Morrison pointed out that this will be a return performance for the local duo, who first met when they were both students at

Hinkletown Mennonite School. Free foods that will be given away at the event will include hot dogs, popcorn, chips, water, and ice cream. Admission and all activities are free, and the event is open to the public. Parking during the block party will be available at nearby Grace Point Church. Readers who would like more information may call 717-687-7577.

Lottery registration will open on Wednesday, Aug. 8. On Friday, Aug. 17, the computer lottery will choose girls at random for teams at each participating school. Following the lottery, registration will reopen and participants will be chosen on a first-come, firstserved basis until a team is full through Tuesday, Sept. 11. The first GOTR practices at area schools will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. According to West, girls who would like to register can find a list of teams on the previously mentioned website. “If you don’t see your school listed as a team on our website, we will not have a team there unless we find coaches,” West explained. “Don’t assume there will be a team there in the fall because there was one in the spring.” To offer more teams at more schools, West and GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson are recruiting coaches. “The coaching opportunity is one you will never forget,” stated Johnson. “(If an individual) has an interest in being a role model for girls and helping to pave the way to their futures, contact us,” she added. According to West and Johnson, coaching is an investment of less than four hours per week. Teams meet directly after school for 90-minute practices two afternoons a week, and there is a short amount of preparation time required for reading over the lesson. Head coaches must be at least 18 years of age, but assistant coaches can be in ninth through 12th grades. Individuals who are interested in coaching are asked to complete a volunteer application by clicking on the volunteer tab at http://gotrlancaster.org. Training sessions will be held for volunteer coaches.

the program by completing a 5K at Millersville University in November. GOTR is a youth development program that works with girls to help them find their potential and pursue their dreams. The goal of the program is to give girls access to their inner strength by working with trained coaches in small groups. During the program, girls in elementary and middle school are encouraged to develop skills and habits they can rely on throughout life. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. The middle school program goes by the name Heart and Sole. West described the new curriculum as having the same great mission, but utilizing new activities and exercises. “The first four weeks, lessons focus on the girl herself,” explained West, who noted that participants will delve into what makes each girl a great friend or helper and discovering what she likes about herself. “They really look inward,” she said. During the second four weeks, the girls take what they have learned and apply it to working to function as a team, focusing on cooperation, collaboration, and completing projects together. During the remainder of the program, the team undertakes a community impact project, which gives coaches an opportunity to talk about how the individual is part of a greater world and how to make an impact. Girls who wish to take part in the fall program may do so through a lottery registration program at http://gotr lancaster.org.

individuals through an interactive and engaging curriculum. One of the Leap Into Language students, Younis, 9, returned for his second summer. He said that a friend told him about the program. EMM staff members observed the growth of returning students like Younis. “I can really see how much he has grown,” said Angie Earl, EMM community engagement coordinator, referring to the English-language familiarity of another student who was participating in the program for his third year. “He is much more comfortable interacting with others and has a huge smile on his face as he greets people, whereas the first year he was so quiet and didn’t want to engage much at all with others.”

Eastern Mennonite Mission’s Kingdom Teams provided opportunities for local youth groups to serve students with refugee status and other nonnative English speakers enrolled in the Leap Into Language Program, offered by IU13 Community Education’s Refugee Center and Community School this summer.

During activities like Ultimate Frisbee, origami, and Minute-to-Win-It games, students were encouraged to practice speaking English with youth group participants. In addition to benefiting the English-language learners, the Kingdom Team program was beneficial for youth group members. Mellinger Mennonite Church youth group member Brenda Weaver shared that Kingdom Teams helped the youths to grow in their leadership skills. After two days of watching Kingdom Team staff members lead the activities, Mellinger youths had the opportunity to take the reins and direct the activities for the Leap Into Language students. Ellen Lapp has served two years as a Kingdom Team staff member. When she heard that there was an entirely new Kingdom Team staff this summer, Lapp decided to join the team again this year. “I thought that having somebody from last year that (previous participants) already knew and somewhat respected would be pretty helpful,” she remarked. Lapp’s familiarity with many of the students has been a significant asset to Kingdom Teams. Continuing her vocational journey, Lapp will be taking another See Teams pg 11

“Discipleship sessions were a big area of focus,” said Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) Kingdom Team director Krista Martin when asked to highlight what is new for the program this year. In addition to participating in activities and sessions designed to strengthen individual discipleship journeys, Kingdom Teams provided opportunities for youth groups to serve students with refugee status and other non-native English speakers enrolled in the Leap Into Language Program, offered by IU13 Community Education’s Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds Junior High School in the School District of Lancaster. Lile was the first of several speakers to address the gathering, which was moved inside Fairmount’s Wheat Ridge Chapel when thunderstorms threatened the construction site directly behind the building. “Fairmount is blessed with more than 330 residents and many great team members across our campus,” Lile noted as he welcomed the group. Lile added that he feels blessed to work with supportive staff and board members and thanked them for their dedication and service. He also thanked the construction company, developers, bank representatives, and others that helped make the groundbreaking possible. Ken Burkholder, chair of Fairmount’s board of directors, spoke about how the new building fits into Fairmount’s 50year-old mission. “Fairmount is not about buildings or about being big,” he said. “It’s about caring for people with compassion.” Burkholder went on to discuss the organization’s stance that each individual is specially created by God, noting that Fairmount provides care in accordance with that definition. He noted that the new building will enhance the organization’s mission in several ways. “As people live longer, we want to make it so couples can stay together as long as possible,” said Burkholder, who noted that some of the goals are making apartments

affordable and utilizing floor plans that allow for residents to be cared for in their own apartments. “Fairmount’s mission is founded in Christ’s love and Mennonite values. We strive to enrich the lives of those we serve,” he said, adding, “We came to this point through faith … that the Lord Jesus Christ is guiding us. I see His hand has been in this for 50 years, and I believe in the next 50 He will be with us (as well).” DJ Risk of Paul Risk Construction, which will handle the building of the new facility, thanked the Fairmount team. He noted that in addition to the 45 apartments, a second project will involve renovating the organization’s personal care facility in multiple phases. Before introducing Fairmount chaplain Paul Gehman, who offered the prayer of dedication, Lile noted that the administration and board of Fairmount esteems the practice of prayer. “We recognize value of prayer and that all things should be brought before the Lord,” said Lile. “We ask Him to be present during the project. We pray this project will bring honor and glory to Him.” Gehman thanked the Lord for the work that has been done in planning the expansion. “Before we even start to turn the sod, we believe Your blessing has been evident,” he prayed. He asked for safety and blessings upon those who will perform the construction work, adding that the success of the project is

EMM assignment as a mission intern this fall in East Africa. In a variety of ways, Kingdom Teams are encouraging personal growth: Students in the Leap Into Language Program are becoming more comfortable with English, youth group participants are learning how to lead, and Kingdom Team staff members are gaining the skills to step into new ventures after this summer. “Kingdom Teams provide opportunities for growth on many levels and for all involved. Youth group participants have been challenged to know the transforming love of Christ for themselves and then to share it with the world around them,” Martin explained. “Through participating in the Leap Into Language Program, the youths can have times to practice what they are learning in the morning discipleship sessions and can discover many Godgiven talents they did not know they had.” For more information about the Kingdom Team program, readers may call EMM at 717-898-2251 or visit www.emm.org.

The 29th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has something to celebrate, more than even before, at the close of the event’s fundraising year. Not only did the convoy attract 539 trucks to participate in this year’s event, but the event broke its own goal by raising a total of $501,387. This record-breaking and historic total will grant the wishes of 50 children within the Susquehanna Valley community. The driver community was dedicated to making sure those 50 wishes were granted as they continued to fundraise for several weeks after the convoy. The Lancaster community also attributed to the fundraising by showing their immense community spirit and support on Mother’s Day, despite the less than stellar weather conditions.
