Community Invited To Faith Church Picnic By Ann Mead Ash
When Becky Naughton and Kim Sinopoli sat down with other members of the Faith Evangelical Congregational Church’s fellowship team to brainstorm events, Sinopoli had an idea. “We were trying to think of different ways to bring (church members) together, but also to include people from the community because we have a lot of room for growth,” said Sinopoli. “Food and fellowship go together. I know communities as a whole will always enjoy some food and entertainment.” Out of Sinopoli’s thoughts has grown the church’s first community picnic. The event, which will feature games and entertainment, is planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. on the church grounds at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Guests are welcome to arrive at 4 p.m., and food
will be served at 5 p.m. There is no need to preregister. The event will be held rain or shine. “We are promoting (the picnic) to local neighborhood (residents),” explained Kristen Hershey, a member of the church outreach committee. “(Area residents) can just show up,” she added. “Bring a lawn chair.” The picnic will include free food, games, and an illusionist. According to Naughton, the menu will include smoked pulled pork sandwiches, beef barbecue sandwiches, and hot dogs. In addition, church members will provide sides and desserts. “We will have plenty of food,” said Naughton, who added that a popcorn machine will be on-site and water ice will be given away. Sinopoli noted that organizers have lined up entertainer Papa Tater to perform throughout the event. “He will do two shows and spend extra time doing See Picnic pg 3

Door prizes, golf, and good friends were all present at the 2018 Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament. This year’s event, which will benefit the Mental Health America of Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, will be held at Overlook Golf Course on Sept. 21. By Ann Mead Ash
When Jerilyn Oehme planned the first Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of her father in 2018, she had three goals. After losing her father to suicide, Jerilyn wanted to raise funds for Mental
Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to help with that organization’s Suicide Prevention Coalition projects. She also wanted to raise awareness of and change the stigma surrounding suicide. Lastly, she hoped that her father’s male friends would come to the outing to remember her father and See Golf Tournament pg 2

pin awards for both male and female players. Other giveaways will be held during the tournament as well. Dinner, following the tournament, is planned for 5:30 p.m. “It will be a backyard barbecue meal catered by Overlook,” said Jerilyn, who added that the hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans on the menu are foods that were favored by her father. Jerilyn recently met with Kim McDevitt, who had become executive director of MHALC just before last year’s tournament. “(McDevitt) has a lot of great ideas and initiatives,” said Jerilyn. One of those initiatives is a program that will give out free gunlocks and suicide prevention information to those who purchase firearms. “The tournament, in memory of Mr. Oehme, has not only brought to light how nondiscriminating the disease is, but has also brought awareness to the epidemic we are struggling with,”
said McDevitt. “The proceeds of the tournament have allowed us to increase suicide prevention in education and support in schools and senior centers, (and) it has also allowed us to increase efforts in our gunlock project.” Jerilyn has also been encouraged by the frank discussions of suicide she has heard in the media. “It has been cool in the past year hearing how much more (suicide) is being talked about,” she said, pointing to the book and podcast titled “Life After Suicide” by Dr. Jennifer Ashton. Jerilyn noted, “People are talking about it and talking about mental health. Not to normalize it, but to make it so it’s OK to talk when you struggle.” Jerilyn is asking those who wish to participate in the tournament to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who would like to take part may call 717-572-1653 or email jco001@lvc.edu.

Moms in Prayer International will soon kick off another season of praying for children and schools. In Lancaster County, many groups will meet weekly. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide group of praying mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other women. In addition to a traditional/one-school Moms in Prayer group, there are also church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, prodigal, military, college, career, language-based, grandmothers’ and working mothers’ groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer International has one goal: to impact children and schools for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Mothers in more than 140 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour praying through the four steps of prayer: praising God for who He is, silently confessing any sins, thanking God for what He has done, and interceding on behalf of children, teachers, and school staff members. Additionally, Moms in Prayer will hold Bless Our School Sunday on Sept. 15. On this date, churches around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in their congregations. For more information about Moms in Prayer International, to find a group, or more information about Bless Our Schools Sunday, readers may visit www.momsinprayer.org. Individuals can locate a group through the Moms in Prayer website by selecting Get Involved, or they may contact Sue Forry at 4stepsofprayer@gmail.com.

After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancaster-area firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real - you’re doing what they were doing: climbing steps.” Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too.

Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it
