Trip Helps Deepen Biblical Understanding
More than 20 years ago, a group of Christian men began taking a golf excursion that involved Bible study. Dubbed Bibles and Bogeys, the yearly event led to six attendees forming a weekly Bible study group that meets at a local restaurant early each Friday morning. About two years ago, group member Tom Despard turned to fellow member Neil McCauley and asked if he would like to help organize a benefit golf tournament. “I said, ‘Are you crazy?’” recalled McCauley, pointing to the plethora of golf tournaments held in the area. However, McCauley soon changed his mind about the effort. “Tom told me about Safe Families for Children (a ministry of Bethany Christian Services (BCS)), and I said, ‘I am in,’” shared McCauley. The resulting golf tournament, named the See Golf Tournament pg 8

The tournament will raise funds for Safe Families for Children, a ministry of Bethany Christian Services that offers an alternative to foster care.

In June 1976, Theresa Newell made her first trip to Israel. “The first day I was there, we were taken to the Western Wall,” recalled Newell. “When I walked up to the wall to pray, God just met me there, and I said, ‘Father, I am here,’ and I heard, ‘… and you’ll be back.’” Newell, who is director of communications for CMJ USA, has now led more than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to See Israel Trip pg 7

the Crossings Meeting Room at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The entrance is via the main entrance of the new Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes. The display is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 19, through Wednesday, Sept. 26, and will be open daily from 2 to 7 p.m., with other hours by appointment. An opening reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19. A century ago, the United States had just entered “The Great War.” While many endorsed the effort, there were persons who could not in good conscience be involved in the killing of other humans. Often at great cost, even including death in a few cases, they spoke through their words and actions of a different path. A series of educational meetings will be held alongside the exhibit, focusing on conscientious objection to war. “Voices of Conscience: The Witness of Conscientious Objectors in WWI” will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, at Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. The program will feature a dramatic reading of the court martial trial of Elbert Hostetler. Dr. Steve Nolt, senior scholar at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, will speak on peace churches and World See Exhibit pg 7

Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program), said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth, Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through mid-August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program, she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang, said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and glutenfree treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby. “That was a very successful day, said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building), Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect, Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help, she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of
(participants’) days. Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables), said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in special-needs classes and camps since she was 8, said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us. Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. Individuals with questions may email reeniepanzini@aol.com.

Archery Shoot from pg 1 to take part in the morning shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. The shoot will consist of a 30target course featuring North American wildlife 3-D targets, including turkey and a bobcat. Organizers noted that about half the targets are deer. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., when a hot brunch will be served. The speaker during brunch will be Frank Rice, pastor at Ephrata Grace Fellowship Church, who will give a short meditation on a hunting-related topic. The course will reopen from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget, explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Initially, they consisted of an image on the front and a space to write the address on the back. In 1907, the divided back was introduced. “Until then, they couldn’t write more than the address on the back, so often they wrote (in small letters) around the border on the front,” Greider explained. Postcards from that time period still exist, as do others produced in the years since. Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383
Arcadia Road, Lancaster. A total of 25 dealers from five states are slated to offer postcards with the themes of advertising, holidays, real photos, town views, and more. Prices typically range from a quarter to hundreds of dollars. Additionally, club members will exhibit boards displaying groups of cards in the subjects of Pennsylvania views, transportation, advertising, and real photos pre-1950. “You can look at the boards and get an idea of what (the subject) is all about,” Greider remarked. The expo is popular among postcard collectors, and a line usually forms at the door before the venue opens. The club also welcomes individuals who are new to the hobby. “People come in who’ve inherited cards and don’t know what to do with them,”
Lancaster County Postcard Club members (from left) Jere Greider, Dede Schaeffer, Steven Mummert, Leighton Stover, and Susan Glass invite the public to attend the 26th annual Postcard Exposition, which will be held at the Farm and Home Center on Aug. 18.

Schaeffer related. Postcards were a form of communication heavily used before telephones became standard in homes. Recipients tended to collect the missives in albums. “(Households) had their family Bible, a photo album, and a postcard album,” Schaeffer said. “They’d sit down and look through the albums on Saturday nights.” Both the images on the front and the text on the reverse of postcards tell stories. Schaeffer noted that club members have discovered cards bearing the signatures of famous folks, and she has personally rubbed shoulders with notable individuals who collect postcards. For club member Susan Glass, an interest in her hometown introduced her to deltiology the word for the study and collection of postcards. “A lot of people look for views of their hometown,” Glass commented. “Once you get hooked, then you find something else to collect.” The Lancaster County Postcard Club welcomes new members, and guests may attend club meetings free of charge. A small fee will be charged for admission to the Postcard Expo. A 4-H group will sell hot and cold food and beverages. Gift certificates to be used toward the purchase of postcards at the expo will be awarded in door prize drawings throughout the day. For more information about the club or the Postcard Exposition, readers may contact Greider at 717-413-6882 or jereg@earthlink.net.
Lancaster Church of the Brethren’s Starlight Tea Concert Series will begin its 2018-19 season with a return engagement by Musical Associates: A Chamber Chorus in Lancaster on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. The church is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. Since 2003, Musical Associates has presented choral programs of music ranging from the Medieval Period to the present day. Under the direction of Lancaster Church of the Brethren director of music Emery DeWitt, the 30-voice auditioned chorus rehearses and performs only in the summer months, allowing area professionals the opportunity to hone skills and work on challenging repertoire without the pressures of the fall and spring academic seasons. The group’s 2018 concerts explore love in all its forms and in a variety of musical styles, with a particular focus on vocal jazz. Along with several jazz love songs, the program will include Bob Chilcott’s “A Little Jazz Mass,” folk song arrangements by Cecilia McDowall, and “Heavenly Home,” a collection of three folk hymn settings by noted Church of the Brethren musician Shawn Kirchner. Musical Associates will provide music for the a worship service on Sunday, Aug. See Concert pg 10

A clearer understanding of the Bible is what Shoresh is all about. After leading so many tours of Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way, she said. “They all come back saying they

Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back, said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking, she noted. Around that same time, Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more

Despard is well-acquainted with the work of BCS, having been involved with the ministry in a number of volunteer positions for 30 years, including serving as past national board chair. He noted that BCS chapters nationwide hold golf tournaments to raise funds. When Despard told members of the Bible study group about Safe Families for Children, they became dedicated to the cause. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. The
program has been shown to be much less costly than utilizing the foster care system, and in most cases, the children are returned to their family. Mark Unger, BCS regional director, said that BCS offers two programs to help children in crisis in Lancaster County. “One is a prevention program to prevent children from having to go into foster care, and the other is Safe Families,” said Unger. McCauley noted that he and other members of the Bible study, including Dixon Miller, Allen Lafferty, Rob Lukowski, and Will Charles, are committed to the cause of Safe Families. “It’s about keeping the families together,” he said. “We all know families can get into crisis, (and Safe Families) gives the parents or grandparents a timeout.” The goal of the golf tournament is to raise $70,000 to cover a funding cut gap that BCS recently suffered. “Safe Families does not produce revenue,” explained

Unger. “It is fully funded by donations and grants.” To make the golf tournament stand out, members of the group have worked to create special contests for the event. “We are doing some unique things to make this a little different from the average (golf outing),” noted McCauley, adding that the goal is to make the outing fun without being too quirky. One example of an unusual activity will include having some old-style hickory stick golf clubs at one hole, along with a video camera. “We will allow a team to use a hickory stick without the stroke counting toward their scores, and we will video people doing this,” noted McCauley. The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Tami is a 1980 graduate of Texas Tech University and earned the rank of captain in the Air Force as an executive officer. She has been a stay-athome wife and mother for more than 30 years. The Heims have four children: Bobbi Garrett, wife of Steve of Willow Street; Joshua, husband of Kari of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Kendralyn, wife of Josh of Spring Hill, Tenn.; and
Rebekah, wife of Nathaniel of Neffsville. They have eight grandchildren and another one due in September. The Heims are members of Calvary Church. Decatur St. The concert is free and open to the public. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. Alcohol is prohibited at the family-friendly event.
