When Dave Felty, head of the musical theater program at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), realized that this fall would
mark the 10th year since the music, worship, and performing arts division of the college began to produce musicals, he knew he had to plan a fall show that would honor the accomplishment. “This

felt like a great time to celebrate a little bit of every show we have done,” shared Felty. “We won’t hit every show, but we will hit most of them.” To mark the milestone, Felty has
planned “Tradition!” The dinner and concert format production will feature 18 students from the worship, music, and performing arts track. Shows will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, with dinner See “Tradition!” pg 2

Prayer Walk Passes Through Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash
John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the See Across America pg 8
John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. The couple stopped for dinner at the church as John worked to complete his prayer walk across America. The Halvorsens left Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 31, 2018, and arrived in Manhattan on July 31.
Themes of friendship, conflict, and forgiveness will all be explored in the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band fall drill titled “The Golden Rule.” Music will include “Be Thou My Vision” by Dallan Forgaill, Symphony No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich, “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens, and “In the Steppes of Central Asia” by Alexander Borodin. The nearly 50 members were introduced to the music and drill during a mini camp that was held Aug. 6 through 8 from 4 to 9 p.m. each day. Band camp officially ran from Aug. 12 through 16, with students meeting at the school from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. A pool party from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 16 marked the See LCHS Band pg 7

at 6 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28, with a meal at noon and concert at 1:30 p.m. A concert will also be held on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may purchase dinner and concert tickets for Friday evening or Saturday at noon or just concert tickets for each performance. The 90-minute show, which will be directed by Heather Grayberg, will feature a band on the stage and a cast dressed in elegant evening wear. Felty said that the 2008-09 school year was when LBC staged “Little Women,” a show he plans to revisit during the concert. “There is some beautiful music in ‘Little Women,’” Felty said. “We will do a lot of songs from that show.” The late Stan Deen directed a number of shows for LBC early on, including “Singin’ in the Rain.” “We will try to do some dance numbers from ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ which will be fun,” said Felty. Felty listed “The Sound of Music” and “The Pirates of Penzance” among the early shows that were staged at the school. “We are doing ‘(I Am the Very Model of a) Modern Major General,’ (from ‘Pirates’),” noted Felty.

When Felty joined the faculty at LBC, the musical theater program was really just getting started. “My first year was 2013-14,” recalled Felty. “We had three musical theater majors.” The small number did not keep Felty from staging “Seussical” at the school that winter. “Godspell” is a show that Felty said brought a lot of positive feedback to the school when it was performed. “‘Godspell’ was a huge success,” Felty noted, adding that he plans to do several songs from the show, along with a few from “Fiddler on the Roof,” from which the concert takes its name. Felty said he plans to draw from “The Sound of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Music Man,” among other shows that have been featured at the school. “This will be music that people will recognize for the most part,” he noted. Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

Rothsville Day from pg 1 Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, is grateful to all the area residents and businesses that participate in the annual event. “This is all made possible through the work of many volunteers from the various churches in the area,” said Marxen, “but it would also not be possible without the local businesses who support us financially and allow us to bring in this level of entertainment.” The 18th annual Rothsville Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. This year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration at Forney Field on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. The 5K is sponsored by WellSpan Family and Pediatric Medicine in Rothsville, and it raises funds for WellSpan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications. Free events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. include a bounce castle, barrel train rides, and games. Two of the games sponsored by the St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church will be a beanbag game and a ring-toss game. The helicopter candy drop, which is open to children age 12 and under, will take place at
10:45 a.m. Other Rothsville Community Day activities will include an egg toss, a wheelbarrow race, a pie-eating contest, and a three-legged race. Participants will be split into two age groups: children and adults. Prizes will be gift certificates to local businesses, said Marxen. Door prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the day. Food items that will be offered free to attendees will include grilled hot dogs. Free whoopie pies have been featured at past events, and Caruso’s restaurant plans to offer samples of its food. For 2019, the featured performer will be character juggler Chris Ivey, who will entertain children at 1 p.m. Ivey has entertained audiences for the past 15 years with family-friendly shows displaying his technical juggling with a theatrical flair. He won a Gold Medal at the 2002 World Juggling Championships, and he has appeared on numerous television programs. He has performed at corporations’ events, theaters, schools, and other venues. “We will have Kay Moyer back with us from Penn State Extension,” said Marxen. Moyer, who is a safety nurse educator, will bring others with her to give a presentation that will highlight dental safety, fire safety, and Lyme disease.
Character juggler Chris Ivey will entertain audiences at the 18th annual Rothsville Community Day, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. The event will include games, food, and demonstrations. Rothsville Community Day is sponsored by area churches, including Jerusalem Lutheran, Millport Mennonite, and Salem United Methodist, along with St. Paul’s E.C., in conjunction with Rothsville Fire Company and the Rothsville Ambulance Association, along with support from many local businesses. Ephrata Cloister from pg 7 The Student Historians of Ephrata Cloister are accepting new members. The group consists of students age 14 and up from public, parochial and home schools who volunteer at the museum throughout the school year. The program offers opportunities to take part in community service; develop skills in leadership, public speaking, and visitor service; and share the stories of the region’s heritage with visitors from around the world. Student Historians serve as interpreters in the historic buildings, learn traditional crafts, and develop new friendships with peers. One of the group’s programs is the annual Lantern Tours, a theatrical experience where students assume the roles of people from the past to bring history to life. The students meet weekly at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, after school on Thursdays until 5 p.m. An informational meeting for prospective students and their parents will be held at Historic Ephrata Cloister on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. There is an annual fee to participate in the Student Historian activities. For more information, readers may call Historic Ephrata Cloister at 717-7336600 during business hours. More information about the Ephrata Cloister is available at www.EphrataCloister.org. pare Liberian food. Moroccan and West African cuisine will be available as well. The House of Plethora, an apparel and accessories line inspired by East and West African influences, will be among the vendors. Three friends, Taiye, Joy, and Scovia, who are from different parts of Africa, started the company in 2018 to bring with their love for ethnic and cultural clothing and accessories to the marketplace. The friends design the clothes and accessories, which are then produced in Africa. Other designers that will be vending include Meekness Beauty, Samburu Beads, and Xtreme Beauty. All of the vendor spaces have been filled, so Dulo noted that there will be many African crafts available for sale. Additionally, an African fashion show will feature the designers’ work. Performances will be given by the Black Diamond African Dancers, Music for Everyone chorus, Kenyan Samburu dancers and singers, and African poets. The day will conclude with a parade of African flags and drumming. conclusion of camp. “‘Be Thou My Vision’ starts off with us all as friends,” said color guard captain Katie Lyle. “The (second movement) is much darker, and then the ballad starts to bring things back together.” Oliver Klemmer, who serves as student director for the band, noted that the group will be singing toward the end of “Chicago.” “The lyrics we are singing have a heavy religious undertone,” he said. “It’s about how God is always watching us, and we need to open ourselves up to Him, and it draws us closer together.” Band vice president and brass marching leader Aaron Kern added, “We realize that we are all making mistakes, and that (brings us) closer together.” Woodwind captain Sarah Scott noted that the final song requires the musicians to perform in a way that ties the loose ends together. “In the closer, we pass the melody around from section to section, and it ends up with two melodies overlapping, so we have to work together to accomplish the goal,” she said. “At the end of the closer, we will all link together in some way to show we are together again,” added wind section leader Freddy Arnold. A number of students will be spotlighted during the show. Scott noted that
the show will begin with the wind instruments and the color guards in a graceful dance on the field. During “Chicago,” Lyle and band president Bernadette Fertal will have a duet using six-foot flags. “We literally lean on each other, which is symbolic of bringing people together and leaning on each other for support,” noted Fertal. The color guard will also have a rifle line in this year’s show. Scott stated that the woodwinds will also be featured in the Shostakovich piece to highlight the harsh undertones and the tension of that movement. In addition, Oliver will play a tuba solo, and Scott will play a solo on the clarinet. Vivian Klemmer will play a mellophone solo. Elyse Shank will employ her talents on the electric violin for the melody of “Be Thou My Vision” and return to play during the final song, and guard member Caroline Erb will perform a dance solo at the beginning of the ballad. Pit ensemble leader Lizbeth Stephan will perform the beginning of “Be Thou My Vision” on the marimba, and the rest of the pit will join with her. She will play alone on the marimba while the band is singing during “Chicago” and provide the starting music for the final song. Stephan explained that the pit ensemble and drumline were combined this year and
moved to the back of the field where they will play in front of a changing backdrop that utilizes a metal framework. Band camp always provides students a chance to get to know each other better. LCHS band leadership adds an element of fun to that by holding theme days throughout camp. This year, Monday was crazy hat and socks day, and on Tuesday students were encouraged to wear red, white, and blue. Wednesday was class color day. Thursday was twin day, and Friday was section theme day. The band, under the direction of Paul Murr, will perform at several exhibitions this fall. Showcases that the band will take part in will include Manheim Township High School on Saturday, Sept. 28; Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown on Saturday, Oct. 5; and McCaskey High School on Saturday, Oct. 26. LCHS will host an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 21.

“We are trying to represent as many countries as possible,” said Dorothy Dulo, Rafiki Africa director and program manager. “We have 12 countries at the Lancaster event and three in York.” The Rafiki Africa Foundation is committed to helping African children and families transform their communities through education, health care, and economic empowerment and sustainability. Although most of the work takes place in Kenya, the annual Rafiki African Cultural Festival celebrates the diversity of African countries locally. walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first cross-country walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to an area near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayerwalkamerica.com.

When members of the Shady Maple Benevolence and Community Outreach Committee first heard about the CrossNet Ministries Pathways to Housing program, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCO-area individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness, they wanted to hold a fundraiser to help. “CrossNet is trying to (provide) apartments (for those in need), and it was something that touched our hearts,” said Gwen Zahm, who, along with fellow committee member Mylon Weaver, came up with the idea of holding a 5K run. “It felt right that (CrossNet) would benefit.” The first Shady Maple Benevolence Committee 5K Walk/Run and 1-Mile Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7:15 a.m., and the race will start at 8 a.m. Zahm said that she and Weaver originally wanted to hold the 5K on the Shady Maple campus in East Earl, but when that was not possible, she suggested the park where she was familiar with the 5K course. “It’s rolling hills and beautiful scenery,” said Zahm of the course that runners will complete in a double loop. “It goes through the trees a bit, and some of it is on gravel.” Zahm did not believe the course would be too challenging for new runners. The event will be professionally timed. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet, said that the organization believes that every person in the community should have a safe and affordable

place to live. “Pathways to Housing is a 12- to 18-month program that focuses on empowering participants to build their resources, including financial literacy, physical health care, education, and emotional resources,” explained Dahl. “Our desire is to collaborate and partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and municipalities to see participants meet their goals and find permanent housing after completing the program.” In the last year, CrossNet has provided case support to about 250 individuals in the New Holland area. Dahl is happy to be working with the local business on the event. “We are incredibly thankful Shady Maple is hosting a 5K fundraiser … for our Pathways to Housing program,” she said. “We are excited to run and walk together as a community to address homelessness in ELANCO.” Sandra Paredes, who heads the benevolence committee, noted that this is not the first time Shady Maple has partnered with CrossNet Ministries. “We appreciate that CrossNet is a ministry of integrity, which encourages us to partner with them,” said Paredes. “We have similar values,” she added, referencing the company vision statement, which is “Serving all with honor and integrity.” Paredes explained that two aspects of that vision are compassion and giving generously. “This (fundraiser) fits well with our values, vision, and mission,” she said. Individuals who wish to take part in the 5K or fun run may register online at www.pretzelcitysports.com. A nominal service fee will apply, and online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday,

church. “The response has been so positive.” John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked people along the route how the couple can pray for them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.” John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,” said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began

Heart Of Lancaster Art Show Planned For Labor Day Weekend
R045608
By Chelsea Peifer
“Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice.” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. Concerts To Mark Beethoven’s Birthday The Arts at Millersville will present pianist Dr. Xun Pan in “Beethoven’s 250th Birthday Sonata Series.” The first of the concerts will feature two sonatas, “Hammerklavier” and “Pathetique,” and will take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. As 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, Millersville University plans to commemorate the composer’s legacy with Pan presenting the concert series. Pan, along with violinist Simon Maurer and cellist Emilio Colón, will perform all 50 works over a period of two and a half years at the Ware Center and internationally. Pan, a Chinese-American pianist, received his early musical training from his grandmother and parents. He continued his studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Syracuse University, and he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from Rutgers University. Pan is director of keyboard studies of the Tell School of Music at Millersville University and is a visiting professor at many universities and conservatories in China. He taught and served as chairman of the piano department at Pennsylvania Academy of Music from 1996 to 2009 and is a founding member and the artistic director of the Lancaster International Piano Festival. Maurer grew up in Switzerland in a family of siblings who all became professional musicians. He studied violin at the Conservatory in Biel and continued his studies in the U.S. Maurer performs chamber music and solo repertoire throughout the eastern U.S., western Europe and China. Solo performances in the U.S. include Schuylkill Symphony Orchestra, Bloomsburg Chamber Orchestra, Louden Symphony, Pennsylvania Sinfonia and Valley Vivaldi, and the Shenyang Symphony Orchestra in China. He is also a member of Trio Clavino, playing violin and viola with Pan and clarinetist Doris Hall Gulati. He is the founder and artistic director of Sunday Sinfonia, a string orchestra of amateur musicians based in Lancaster, and the artistic director of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble. He has been a featured soloist in Philadelphia area jazz clubs and has performed at Jazzfest in Schuylkill County and Reading. As a performer, Colón is a solo cellist, chamber musician, conductor, composer and

Cruising along the Susquehanna River in a pontoon boat while hearing about the history of the area was an activity the team at Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) wanted to offer to locals - and visitors - to make sure more people had a chance to enjoy all that the river has to offer. On July 13, SNHA launched its pilot season of River Discovery Boat Tours with resounding success. Paul Nevin, manager of Zimmerman Center for Heritage, which is operated by SNHA, said that the tours were so popular that within hours of the first round of free tickets being made available online, every spot filled up for the free pontoon boat tours offered at three times on Saturdays and Sundays in July and August. “The response has been overwhelming,” said Nevin, who is one of the three guides who alternate taking the lead for the boat tours. The tours begin and end at

the dock across the street from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Nevin said that due to the enormous popularity of the boat tours, SNHA decided to expand its pilot season to include Fridays and to extend through Sunday, Oct. 13, rather than ending in August. Reservations may be made at www.susquehanna heritage.org/programs/boat-tours. The free tours are available at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct. 13. Tickets will be released incrementally, with another block of dates opening up in mid-September. Tours will be offered again in 2020. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, as participants aboard the 10passenger pontoon boat ride south on the Lake Clarke portion of the river to the Safe Harbor Dam before circling up to Columbia and continuing back to Wrightsville. Nevin said that the tours fit well with the mission of SNHA to connect people with the Susquehanna River. Southern portions of the approximately 17-mile tour give participants a glimpse of portions of the river that cannot be seen from the roadways. “When you’re driving across the river, you don’t get the sense of scale that you do being out on a boat,” noted Nevin. Tourgoers saw plenty of wildlife on the summer tours, including numerous sightings of the often-elusive bald eagles. Visitors will get a glimpse of life along the Susquehanna River as it as today and hear about what it was like in years gone
by. Stories about the rich history of the Lake Clarke portion of the river date back to when the area was the heartland of the Native American Susquehannock people. Nevin, who also serves on the board of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, shares about the ancient Susquehanna River rock art that is primarily located in and along the river from Washington Boro to the Maryland state line. “The Native Americans saw this as a special place. They created rock art here not to make it sacred but rather because they saw it as sacred already,” remarked Nevin. “Something is special about this part of the river.” More recent history includes the construction of the railways along the river, thriving shad fisheries, and communities that grew as the Holtwood and Safe Harbor Dams were built.
According to SNHA president Mark Platts, the River Discovery Boat Tours are the first new initiative of SNHA since its Congressional designation of Lancaster and York counties as the United States’ 55th National Heritage Area in March 2019. Grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources/Heritage Areas Program and the National Park Service/Chesapeake Bay Gateways Program enabled the rides to be offered free of charge to participants in the 2019 pilot season. The tours were developed as part of the Zimmerman Center’s official role as a National Park Service Visitor Contact & Passport Station for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. More information is available at www.susquehannaheritage.org.
