Student leaders of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band were excited to be partnering with the school’s Mini-THON organization, which supports Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. “(The) theme (of the show) follows a child going through cancer,” explained Megan Lyle, marching band president and brass music section leader. The seven-minute fall drill, themed “This World of Words and Meanings,” will utilize four pieces of music to represent four stages of a child’s journey with cancer. The pieces will also symbolize the qualities represented by each of the four diamonds, acording to a story written by Christopher Millard, a See LCHS Marchers pg 8
Lancaster Catholic High School band leaders (from left) Megan Lyle, Abby Francis, Katy Arnold, Rebecca Ressel, Sebastian Clemmer, Cate Lopez, and Erik Graybill worked with about 50 other band members to master the fall drill, called “This World of Words and Meanings,” during band camp, which was held at the school in August.
When Amber Pavalko of Stevens signed on back in February to organize unite@night, an event that raises funds for CSF (Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation), she had no idea what her future held. Pavalko has been fighting Chiari malformation, a syndrome that is associated with a variety of other physical problems, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and syringomyelia since 2013. “I saw that there wasn’t (a fundraising event for CSF) here, so I wanted to do that,” said Pavalko. “That was before I needed four surgeries.” Pavalko has emerged from those surgeries feeling better than she had in years, allowing her more energy to plan the unite@night Lancaster CSF Walk for 2018, set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim See CSF Fundraiser pg 9
Herb Fest Transplanted To Leola For 2018 David Kim Performance To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along By Ann Mead Ash
Barbara Dagen, a member of the Conestoga Herb Guild and one of the organizers of the guild’s annual Herb Fest, is hoping the annual celebration’s move to Leola will grow on attendees. “We want people to know there’s a new location,” noted Dagen. This year’s Herb Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The War Memorial Building may be found along Route 23 about 6 miles north of See Herb Fest pg 3

Barbara Dagen displays items that will be featured at Herb Fest 2018 when it is held at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building on Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” SingAlong - which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The

helped to fund the program. In April, students in technology classes at Columbia High School built the raised beds for the garden and helped the elementary students to fill the space with leaf compost and soil. One local business provided discounted lumber for the project, and others donated leaf compost and topsoil. Several organizations donated seeds, and the fourthgrade classes at Park set to work planting lettuce, radishes, and other seasonally appropriate crops before the school year ended. Once the summer program began, the children who took part in the program helped to plant and tend to additional vegetables. Children not only had the chance to help plant and tend to the garden but also to prepare and enjoy fresh snacks. Whenever a bumper crop occurred, the students got to take fresh food home like on the day they gathered 26 pounds of cucumbers. Time was also spent playing games and creating garden-related crafts. Hamilton Elementary in the School District of Lancaster and Brecht Elementary in Manheim Township School District offered similar summer garden clubs. The Edible Classroom was also invited to provide garden education at Manor Township’s Playground in the Park program, where volunteers created a 20-by-50-foot garden plot for children to help tend and harvest vegetables. In addition to investing in a host of summer activities, The Edible Classroom is preparing for The Watermelon Blaster 5K and Fun Run, its inaugural fundraiser, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. Live music, fresh vegetable samples, and a watermelon seed spitting contest will all be part of the fun. For details on the event and to register, readers may visit www.theedibleclass room.org/watermelon-blaster. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2018-19 academic year. To apply for the School Garden Grant program, interested school representatives may email grace@theedibleclassroom.org. To keep up with future happenings and events, interested individuals may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom.org.

Route 30. The event was formerly held at Boettcher House in Landis Woods. Organizers of the fest pay tribute to all things herbal with displays and demonstrations, including how to create herbal wreaths. A Christmas Corner, a live plant area, and food samples will all be part of this year’s event. Additional displays will include lavender crafts, herbal soaps, plant markers, flower pots, birdhouses, garden décor, and cat and dog treats. According to Dagen, items that will be new this year will include wooden pumpkins as well as lip balms and salves made with calendula, comfrey, and plantain. Personal care items such as orange peppermint body scrub and lavender body scrub will be on display, along with seed packets, fresh plants, and bunched herbs. Food items to sample have become a traditional part of Herb Fest. Dagen noted that peach, strawberry, and blueberry jams and jams made with lavender will be at the fest, along with baked goods featuring herbal flavors. A Mediterranean sea salt blend will also be offered. According to Dagen, toilet fizzies are a new feature for 2018. “You throw it in the toilet and let it fizz and then brush it out,” she said of the lavender-citrus seasoned blend, which is septic tank safe. “It’s herbal, rather than chemical,” she added. According to the International Herb Association, the 2018 herb of the year is hops. Dagen said that the herb will be spotlighted at the fest to educate visitors. The guild uses the funds raised by the event to purchase books on the subject of herbs to donate to local libraries and to help other local nonprofit organizations. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month 10 months of the year at 7 p.m. at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association building in Leola. Club membership is limited. Readers who are interested in learning about guild membership may call Deirdre Remollino at 717-288-2126. Parking at the War Memorial Building is free, and there is no charge to attend the Herb Fest. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com. About a year ago, Leaman was discussing the future of the sing-along with supporter JM Herr. “As we move forward, we will (need a legacy),” explained Leaman. “(Herr) is friends with David Kim,” said Leaman. Herr offered to ask Kim to perform a benefit concert for the sing-along. “Kim said he would love to do it,”

Tucked among the farmlands a few miles from Strasburg’s town center is one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. Here, at the Clinic for Special Children, groundbreaking testing and research for disease-causing mutations are conducted daily. Timing is critical in preventing or limiting damage to the brain or body. Through advancements in diagnosing rare genetic diseases, therapy can start within hours of a baby’s birth. “ What makes us different from a commercial or hospital laboratory is that we perform very efficient, specialized testing, explained laboratory technician Ashlin Rodrigues. “For example, I recently received a whole blood sample around 9 a.m. and ran a genetic test to determine if the newborn had SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) since the disease ran in the family. It was completed by 11 a.m. Commercial labs may take up to 21 days to run the same test. Under the laboratory direction of Dr. Erik Puffenberger, the small clinic has identified more than 260 different gene mutations, which enables molecular diagnosis and therapy to begin the day a baby is born. While rare diseases are found within communities
throughout the world, some disorders are predominant among the Old Order Amish and Mennonite (Plain) communities due to a genetic “founder effect since their populations have remained reproductively isolated over many generations. Samples for lab testing come from these communities as far away as Indiana, Wisconsin, and New York as well as outside Plain communities from around the world, including Europe and Brazil. In 1989, the clinic opened its current location at 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, to provide a medical home for the children of these communities. The Clinic for Special Children is a nonprofit organization that provides primary pediatric care and advanced laboratory services for more than 1,000 clients and is recognized as a world leader in translational and precision medicine. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. A new fundraising event in the form of a 5K race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 8 a.m. The race will be held rain or shine. Beginning and ending at the clinic, the 3.1-mile course will take runners, joggers, and walkers along scenic country roads, winding through Lancaster County
Clinic for Special Children laboratory technicians KaLynn Loeven (left) and Ashlin Rodrigues (middle) view chromosome samples with laboratory director Dr. Erik Puffenberger. The team performs highly specialized rapid testing for rare genetic diseases. A 5K race in Strasburg on Sept. 22 will raise money for the nonprofit organization. farmland. Participants will have full use of the closed road as they venture past vineyards, see an Amish schoolhouse, and pass by acres of picturesque Amish farms. There will be free refreshments, a silent auction, a bake sale, and crafting opportunities for children among many other family-friendly activities at the race. Interested participants can register at www.ClinicforSpecialChildren.org or pick up registration forms at the clinic. The registration fee will be discounted
until Saturday, Sept. 1, and will include a goodie bag and a T-shirt as supplies last. Medals will be awarded to the first overall male and female and the top three males and females in a variety of categories ranging from age 14 to 60 and up. Prerace packet pickup will take place at the clinic on Friday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. To register, volunteer, or become an event sponsor, readers may visit www.ClinicforSpecialChildren.org or call 717-687-9407.

products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons
- many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go, remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me. Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us, Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it. Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. Looking back on the opening of The Trust Performing Arts Center, located at 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, five years ago, executive director Robert Bigley admitted that the new venture held some surprises. “We didn’t really know what we were getting into,” he said, adding that the opportunity to start a downtown performing arts center has had many positive results. “We are honored to have been a part of the arts renaissance in Lancaster this past decade,” Bigley stated That delight is exhibited in the lineup that has been chosen to celebrate The Trust’s fifth anniversary. “We are pulling out all the stops,” announced Bigley. Returning artists who will perform will include the Donald Sinta Quartet, Daniel Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers, a group celebrating its 50th anniversary, will perform at The Trust for the first time. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 7, The Trust will hold its seasonal launch party, where a showcase of local choreographers will present their works in competition. “The AY/dancers will choose one of those (works) to present (at The Trust),” explained Bigley. AY/dancers will perform on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Durang Dance Collective Presentations at the venue. AY/dancers will perform three pieces by world-renowned choreographers and one by the winner of the local competition. Bigley noted that the Donald Sinta Quartet, made up of four saxophonists who play transcriptions of classical music, crossover songs, and some fun pieces, will open the season on Thursday, Oct. 4. “They played at The Trust in our first season,” recalled Bigley. “They had just won (gold) at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which is the most important chamber music competition in America.” Bigley added that the acoustics of The Trust are well suited to the group’s sound. Bigley was also excited to
announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world.” Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,” said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. New York Polyphony, a fourman Grammy-nominated classical a capella group, will return to The Trust for the third time on Sunday, Feb. 17, and Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. Christopher Shih, a local physician and pianist, has invited his friend and world-class cellist Wendy Warner, along with a few others, to perform with him on Thursday, May 2, 2019. In addition, The Trust will host four dramatic presentations, including the classic comedy “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at 7:30 p.m. on the evenings of Oct. 25 to 27 and Nov. 1 to 3 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 3. A 45-minute production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays from Dec. 1 to 22, with an additional 11 a.m. performance on Nov. 24. On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, the one-man show “Bonhoeffer in Prison” will be presented. “Freud’s Last Session,” will be presented on Friday, March 29, at 7:30p.m.; Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The play, which imagines a series of meetings between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, will be staged in the mahogany-paneled board room with a fireplace. Limited tickets will be available for this theater-in-theround experience. On the field, the more than 50 members of the band will perform a drill that will tell the story along with the music. “The drill starts with a lot of soft, curved lines and interchanging swirls,” said Rebecca Ressel, band vice president and brass marching section leader, who added that the opening has a bright, happy feeling. “As the drill moves on, it becomes sharper and more angular and the show gets darker,” added Ressel. According to student director Sebastian Clemmer, by the second movement, audience members will detect that there is trouble. “By the third piece it is very harsh,” said Clemmer. Katy Arnold, spiritual life director, public relations coordinator, and percussion section member, was quick to point out that there is a moment of hope in the third movement when the music returns to the opener for a measure. Clemmer noted that although the third piece

ends with the child dying, sadness does not prevail. “The end of the fourth movement is calm and uplifting (because) there’s a chance for redemption,” Clemmer said. Lyle explained, “The fourth movement follows the theme of (an afterlife). It’s really the beginning of something better.” Some of the lyrics to “On and On and On” will be sung by pit section leader Abby Francis. The color guard will play an important role in the drill, symbolizing the physical embodiment of the child. Color guard member Kaite Graybill will play the child, and Hillary Zink will play cancer, performing with a saber. “In the beginning all five color guard are dressed like children with teddy bears,” explained Arnold. Ressel added that the color guard members will then remove their flowing dresses to reveal tight black suits, which they will wear until the final movement when they will don white gowns. “They begin by representing a child in its innocence,” said Lyle. “The toll cancer takes on a (a child’s life is symbolized by the black outfits when that) innocence is ripped away. In the fourth movement, (the white gowns represent the) afterlife.” A Chinese lantern will be released to symbolize the soul’s journey to heaven. Lyle noted that the partnership with Mini-THON is an attempt to do something meaningful as a school community. The band leaders hope to create educational and fundraising opportunities for Mini-THON at football games and at the LCHS exhibition show. The band will perform in the Manheim Township, Ephrata, and McCaskey high school’s showcases, as well as its own. The marchers practiced the drill for three weeks in August, meeting the evenings of Aug. 4 through 9 and 21 through 23, as well as during band camp, which was held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 through 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug 17. Lyle expressed that she hopes the message of the show will resonate with audience members. “Everyone has known someone cancer has affected,” she said. “This year (our show will focus on) something that affects the entire community to raise awareness and band together to fight the problem (of childhood cancer).”

Pavalko has had 11 neurosurgeries, along with a number of other procedures and hospitalizations, since first being diagnosed. She said that she is now feeling the best she has been since she began experiencing symptoms after giving birth to her daughter, Addie, in 2013. “I have two shunts now,” said Pavalko, who added that the unusual system was installed by Dr. Kenneth Liu, a vascular neurosurgeon now based at Hershey. The shunt system has greatly reduced the intracranial hypertension caused by having too much spinal fluid. Before Liu operated, Pavalko was experiencing a number of symptoms, including a continual headache from the pressure of the fluid. “My leg was still dragging, and my hand was shaking before I had those four surgeries,” explained Pavalko. “I couldn’t see well enough to not crash into a wall, (but) now I can see again, and I can drive short distances.” Pavalko said that she is thankful for doctors like Liu who are willing to use creativity and try new technologies to treat conditions such as Chiari, EDS, and related problems. “I wouldn’t be living my life with my daughter right now if he didn’t take chances on people like me who are atypical,” she said. “That’s what I am grateful for. That’s what gives me hope.”

Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. Activities will begin at 6 p.m., and the walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. Pavalko has endeavored to keep this year’s event simple. The event will feature a walk and prizes and giveaways including gift cards and gift baskets. Food that will be available for purchase will include hot dogs, soft pretzels, and beverages. CSF is an organization founded to advance knowledge of Chiari, syringomyelia, and other related disorders. Chiari is generally a congenital condition in which the size of the back of the skull crowds neurological tissues. In this condition, the cerebellum can interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to flow into the spinal canal. Syringomyelia occurs when a syrinx, caused by a buildup of spinal fluid, forms in the spinal cord. This condition can stretch and damage nerve fibers. EDS is a connective tissue disorder caused by genetic changes in the tissues that stabilize and support joints and organs. The unite@night events are designed to provide education about Chiari and related syndromes while raising funds for research to aid those who are afflicted. Pavalko hopes to raise $5,000 with this year’s event.

One of the two original organizers will return to help manage the 40th anniversary presentation of the Long’s Park Art Festival, slated for Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 31, to Sunday, Sept. 2, at Long’s Park, Route 30 and Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1, as well as 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 2. Rick Faulkner and his late father, Dick Faulkner, were the first organizers of what is now a nationally recognized fine arts show. This year he is serving as the volunteer artistic co-director of the festival. Bonnie St. John is returning for her third year as co-director for festival operations. Rick, an artist himself stated, “The first Art Festival in Long’s Park was held July 4, 1976, presented by the Lancaster County Bicentennial Committee.” He noted that his father co-chaired the Art and Craft subcommittee of the county organization. Rick remembers that at the time of that first festival, Morris Ressel, the Lancaster city parks director, had worked with the July 4 event and liked what he saw. He approached Dick about presenting an Art Festival with the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation as a fundraiser for the foundation, which needed a

soup, hot dogs with chili or sauerkraut, side dishes, various desserts, cold beverages, and coffee. Members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band will help the Lions in the trailer. In return, the Lions will make a donation to the GSHS Marching Band Booster Club. A queen-size quilt, donated by Witmer’s Quilt Shop, will be on display. This will be the last year that the shop will donate a quilt because the enterprise is closing. Noll expressed gratitude to the owner for donating a quilt each year for many years in support of NHSAP. The donated quilt for this year bears an Indian Wedding Ring pattern and was created in shades of brown and teal. It will be given away around 6:30 p.m., according to Noll. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. “We can always take more volunteers,” said Noll, who noted that help is needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterwards. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermission are also needed. No admission will be charged for the Fiddler’s Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Readers who would like more information about the Fiddler’s Picnic or the Summer Arts Program may visit www.newhollandsummerarts.com, search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook, or email newhollandsummerarts assoc@gmail.com.

to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage. The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform each year, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own little mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play accordion, harmonica, and keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Organizers plan to have a square dance caller onsite for this year’s event. Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event, according to Noll. The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase, including hot ham sandwiches, barbecued chicken, chicken corn

new funding source for the free summer music presentations at the amphitheater. The goal was to organize and present a national-caliber art and craft festival in Lancaster. The first Labor Day show in 1979 was held in conjunction with the foundation’s annual day of music. A total of 87 artists and craftspeople exhibited. “I had recently finished my master’s degree and was not planning to become involved with the show. I had been involved with some other craft shows during my college years,” Rick recalled. “The week before the inaugural show, my father injured his back and was not able to participate. I stepped in at the last minute to organize the artists and craftspeople. From that first year we built the show with increasing attendance of both the public and artists,” he said. For the past decade, the Art Festival has been recognized as one of the top 50 fine arts shows in the United States. In the 2016, the show also ranked second on the East Coast. This year’s festival will offer 206 artist exhibitors from across the United States. Featured mediums include ceramics, digital art, drawings, decorative and wearable fiber, furniture, glass, nonprecious and precious jewelry, leather, metal, 2-D and 3-D mixed media, paintings in various media, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and woodwork. Set in Lancaster’s largest city park, the event will feature artists’ work with live demonstrations, strolling musicians, opportunities to win the work of artists, and food. More than 150 volunteers will lend their services at the event. Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate, but tickets purchased in advance at https://longspark.org/art -festival/tickets/ will be discounted. Individuals may purchase single-day tickets or three-day passes. Children age 12 and under may enter for free and can enjoy free activities in the Kids’ Art in the Park tent. In celebration of the festival’s 40th anniversary, anybody celebrating their 40th birthday this year will receive free admission as long as they bring proof of their birthday. Parking will be free, and shuttle service for purchases is complimentary. The show is presented by the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching Lancaster through art and music. All proceeds from tickets sold will benefit the foundation’s presentation of the free 2019 Summer Music Series.

Sounds Of Strasburg To Close The Season

The Sounds of Strasburg concert series will conclude with a performance by Flipside and the Temple Avenue Jazz Quintet on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be hosted by the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and will take place in the soft turf and terraced amphitheater at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. “We wanted to host a dynamic concert during the Labor Day weekend because many local residents will make this a ‘staycation’ holiday. Most schools have already opened, so (we hope it) will be a popular end-of-the-summer, last-hurrah, and remain-at-home long weekend,” said Strasburg Community Parks Foundation president Dale Kaufman. “Flipside and the Temple Avenue Jazz Quintet concert will be a great way to relax (and) celebrate the holiday and the finale of our concert series.” Flipside is part of the LampeterStrasburg Community Band and has about 20 members who enjoy playing jazz music together. Likewise, Temple Avenue Jazz Quintet has a strong affinity for the genre. Temple Avenue consists mostly of music majors who are seniors at Temple University and based in Lancaster. The group formed six years ago and plays at various venues throughout the community. “They are known for bringing a fresh and energetic perspective to their repertoire. We know the audience will love their renditions of jazz classics and favorites,” Kaufman remarked. Admission to the concert will be free of charge thanks to local sponsors. Concert attendees are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the outdoor event. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show dinner may use the picnic tables in and beside the park’s scenic pavilion. Visitors are encouraged to patronize food vendors that will be on-site, offering food, cold beverages, and Italian water ice. The park’s main parking lot on Precision Avenue is reserved for handicapped-accessible parking. A golf cart shuttle service will be available for disabled guests. Ample parking may be found along Precision Avenue. Last year, the LCCC Food Hub provided fresh and nutritious food to nearly 29,000 individuals, which is an increase of more than 3,400 from 2016. The majority of clients pick up food from the Food Hub, located at the LCCC headquarters at 812 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where in addition to receiving prepacked bags of nonperishable food, they may choose fresh produce and proteins. The Food Hub also delivers food to the residents of three low-income senior high-rise buildings, provides food for caseworkers to take to clients who are unable to travel to the Food Hub, and supplies some of the components for the free community meals hosted by Lancaster County churches. By the end of July 2018, the Food Hub had served 10.7 percent more people than it had at the same time in 2017. The food distributed to these individuals was obtained through a nearly even split between purchases from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, where the Food Hub pays roughly 8 cents per pound, and items donated by individuals, local grocery stores, and restaurants. “This speaks volumes to the support of the community donating to us,” Rittenhouse remarked. Rittenhouse and Steve and Alex Schramm hope community support extends to the fourth annual TransFOREmation Golf Tournament, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. “We would love to get to $20,000,” said Steve, stating the fundraising goal for the event that he and Alex are chairing. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for the outing, and registrations for golfers will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 7. Each registered golfer will receive meals before and after the round, which will begin
Cloister Seeks Student Volunteers The Student Historians of Ephrata Cloister are accepting new members. The group consists of students age 14 and up from public, parochial and home schools who volunteer at the museum throughout the school year. The program offers opportunities to take part in community service; develop skills in leadership, public speaking, and visitor service; and share the stories of the region’s heritage with visitors from around the world. Student Historians serve as interpreters in the historic buildings, learn traditional crafts, and develop new friendships with peers. One of the group’s programs is the annual Lantern Tours, a theatrical
experience where students assume the roles of people from the past to bring history to life. The students meet weekly at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, after school on Thursdays until 5 p.m. An informational meeting for prospective students and their parents will be held at Historic Ephrata Cloister on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. There is an annual fee to participate in the Student Historian activities. For more information and to register for the first meeting on Sept. 6, readers may call Historic Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600 during business hours. More information about the Ephrata Cloister is available at www.EphrataCloister.org.
