Servant Stage, LBC To Produce “Titanic” Musical By Ann Mead Ash

Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,” the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,” said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depiction” of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,” said Calderon. “That’s the magic of the show … the power of the story.” Calderon is working with Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer to bring the show to the stage in See “Titanic” pg 4

When pastor David Heil preached the first service for the congregation that was to become Faith Evangelical Congregational (E. C.) Church on Sept. 22, 1968, his topic was “What Is the Church?” Heil delivered the sermon at Locust Grove Mennonite School along Old Philadelphia Pike to a gathering of 56. On Sunday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m., Faith E. C. Church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will celebrate 50 years of existence since that initial service. Area residents, especially those who have a connection to the church, are welcome to attend. Current pastor Joel Kime is looking forward to the activities planned for that morning. “We will have a special See 50th Anniversary pg 3

When Landis Homes resident Jacqueline Myers was a child, she lived with her parents in Belgium, where they ran a home for orphaned children. Following World War II, Myers recalled that many colorful quilts were donated to the orphanage by Mennonite organizations in the United States. When she immigrated, Myers aimed to learn quilting, and she eventually retired to Lancaster County, where she learned the art. Now, Myers is giving back by donating her Magic Tiles quilted piece to be auctioned at the Landis Homes Fellowship Day, which will be held at the community, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, on Saturday, Sept. 8. “(My family) received so many good things from people here; it was only fitting that we repay,” said Myers. Landis Homes’ 46th annual Fellowship Day, which includes barbecue chicken meals and live and silent auctions featuring work by local artists along with new items donated by local businesses, will benefit the organization’s Caring Fund, which supports benevolent care for persons who have exhausted their finances. The day will kick off when food stands open at 7 a.m. Among the many foods that will be available for purchase this year will be doughnuts, baked goods, hot dogs, fruit cups, sub sandwiches, soup, ice cream, and more. The chicken barbecue will open at 10:30 a.m., and options will consist of a half-chicken only or a meal including a

half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, and a beverage. The Market Place will include yard sale items, gift certificates, an art gallery, a pantry, and a produce stand. Share-A-Meal Adventures, gift certificates, and a variety of handmade items will also be sold. Grandma’s Attic and the Linen Closet are traditional sale areas where attendees may find gently used treasures available for purchase. The live auction will begin at 9 a.m. with home and yard items going up for bids. At 10:45 a.m., the artwork donated by a number of local painters, potters, and artists working in fused glass will cross the block. According to Alonna Sprunger, director of advancement for Landis Homes, paintings will include historical pieces depicting a Lancaster County covered bridge, outdoor scenes by Jane Wooster Scott, and a painting by Steve Wilson. Pieces by well-known area artists Suk Shuglie and Freiman Stoltzfus will also be sold. New items donated by businesses from throughout the county are often picked up by volunteer Roy Weaver. “I visit about 50 places,” noted Weaver. This year, he procured two ice cream makers from a well-known store in the northeastern part of the county. He recalled a Southern-area toy manufacturer that gave him a high chair for a previous auction that became a rocking chair when it was turned upside down. At 10:30 a.m., Fill the Gap opportunities

will be presented to bidders. Fill the Gap is a special opportunity to help cover the difference between what insurance covers and the actual cost for residents who have exhausted their resources. For only $75, a bidder can cover a half-day of care, and for a little over $1,000 a bidder can cover a week. Individuals who cannot attend the auction but wish to help Landis Homes reach the Fill the Gap goal of $45,000 may contact Sprunger at 717-381-3580 or asprunger@landishomes.org. At 1:30 p.m., a variety of quilts and wall hangings will go up for bids. “The quilts are phenomenal this year,” noted Sprunger. Many of the quilts are created by Landis Homes quilters, but churches donate, as well. Patterns will include Dresden Plate Pinwheel, Amish Lone Star, Log Cabin, and Copper Pennies. Children’s activities will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and will include a visit from local radio personality Lisa Landis, as well as a bounce castle, face painting, barrel train rides, and balloons. Readers who would like to learn more about Fellowship Day or view auction items may visit www.landishomes.org. More information is available by calling 717-569-3271. Pictured on front: Roy Weaver (left), Jacqueline Myers, and Sadie are looking forward to the 46th annual Landis Homes Fellowship Day, to be held at the retirement community on Sept. 8. The day will feature a chicken barbecue, an auction of artwork by well-known local artists, and more.

Western Dressage Championships Planned The third annual Pennsylvania Western Dressage Championships will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Crescendo Training Centre, 288 S. Fairmount Road, Ephrata. It will be co-hosted by Blue Goose Stable and Crescendo Training Centre. The show is sanctioned by the United States Equestrian Federation, as well as the Western Dressage Association of America. The venue is different from the previous two years, when the event was held in Cochranville. The show will feature all levels of Western Dressage from Intro through Level 4, as well as Western Dressage Suitability and Hack, Equitation and Musical Freestyle. Prizes will be awarded in the championship classes. Western Dressage is a growing discipline that combines the structure and precision of traditional dressage with the American-made Western style of riding. The Western Dressage division was added to the United States Equestrian Federation a few years ago and has seen a steady increase of interest and participation over the past few years. Admission to the show is free to spectators, and food will be available. Sponsorships and program advertisements are available. For more information, readers may contact Kriss Phelps at 717-475-3047.

service, and Bishop Bruce Hill will be our speaker,” said Kime. “We have invited all the former (living) senior pastors, and they have confirmed they will be in attendance,” noted Kime, adding that all the living charter members of the church have been invited to attend as well. Among the activities organizers have planned for the celebration is an opportunity for those who were present at the founding to recall that time and share memories with the gathering. “We will have a panel discussion with early participants like pastor David Heffner and others who are still living (and who) remember what it was like when it was a church plant at Locust Grove,” said

Kime. “I think it will be interesting to hear their stories.” Kime noted that members John Spayd and Larry and Alice Royer will be present for the question-and-answer session. The service will be followed by refreshments, including cake. Kime explained that Faith E. C. Church is a daughter church of Grace E. C. Church, which was once located in Lancaster at Shippen and Locust streets. Later the church merged with another E. C. church in East Petersburg, where it is still located. “(Grace) was once a huge church with over 1,000 people,” said Kime. “People were coming from (the Conestoga Valley) area into the city, and they had a vision to start a church (in the Conestoga Valley area).”

Kime credited Heil, who is no longer living, with having the vision to plant Faith on Old Philadelphia Pike. The current church was built in 1971 on 2.8 acres of land purchased from Raymond Landis. The building sports a large portico on the side that faces Old Philadelphia Pike. In the 16 years Kime has served the church, he said the portico has been damaged four times by large vehicles utilizing the church parking lot to change direction. Two of the accidents caused significant damage to the portico, and following one of the incidents, church members discovered a time capsule behind the cornerstone. “We found this box … that was put there when the cornerstone was laid,” said Kime. The metal box contained a wealth of information about the founding of the church, including the bulletin from the

groundbreaking ceremony held on March 28, 1971, and the bulletin from the ceremony held for the laying of the cornerstone on Oct. 21, 1971. The box also contained a brief history of the church written by Heil and Heffner in May of 1969. Heil pastored both Grace and Faith churches until David Heffner was called to be the first full-time pastor of Faith in 1969. The church held its first vacation Bible school in August of 1969, and by March 22, 1979, the Sunday service attendance had exceeded 100. Attendance increased steadily, even before the building was completed, and by October 1971, attendance at worship numbered almost 150 persons. Readers who have questions about the anniversary event may call the church at 717-393-5345.

“Titanic” from pg 1 partnership with Lancaster Bible College at the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for two weekends in September. “Titanic” will run on Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. Calderon noted that the ensemble piece tells many stories rather than one story. “You are hearing every angle of the events that are happening as they’re happening,” he said. “You get a true feel for what it was like in third class and first class and among the officers and for the crew and second class … relationships between couples and what (individual) objectives and agendas are,” said Calderon. “Titanic” has been one of Bauer’s favorites as well. “(The show) swept the Tonys, (winning) best musical, score, book, orchestration,” said Bauer, who added that the show is seldom staged because of its large cast of nearly 70 and its musical requirements. “To do it justice, it has got to have a full orchestra and a minimum of 40 incredible voices,” said Bauer. The show is musically demanding, featuring about 30 musical numbers. “The music is an integral part of the storytelling,” said Calderon. “Every scene is underscored with a theme or (musical) dynamics to make the audience feel what they’re supposed to feel.” Calderon added that the opening number, which is nearly 15 minutes long, is used as an introduction. “You meet the characters. You see the classes boarding. You see the crew assemble, and (the song) ends with the ship setting sail.” During Act 1, musical numbers are used to tell the stories of the cast members, delving into their backgrounds, hopes, and dreams. “What a Remarkable Age This Is,” is sung by the first-class passengers on the promenade deck, followed by “Lady’s Maid,” a song that describes the hopes of third class passengers coming to America. Other standout songs include “The Telegraph Song” and “The Proposal.” During Act 2, figurative masks are dropped from the characters’ faces as the ship begins to sink. “In Act 2 you start to see the real people (in) how they react (to the disaster) - especially among the first-class and upper-level crew,” said Calderon. “You get inside the characters more, and it keeps you fully invested in (the story).” Such a heavy subject is not without comic relief. Calderon described a middle-class couple named Bean from Indianapolis whose demeanors remain the same throughout the show. “All (Mrs. Bean) wants to do is rub elbows with the first class … even as the ship is going down,” he said. The performance is open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. To reserve seats, readers may visit www.servantstage company.com or call 717-560-8241.

29th annual Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue because Fairmount broke ground on July 23 for the 45-unit Wheat Ridge apartment building in the area where the barbecue has traditionally been held. On Saturday, Sept. 8, Fairmount will hold the fundraiser at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata. The event supports the organization’s Sharing Fund to aid residents who have exhausted their financial resources. The day will kick off at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast by suggested donation featuring eggs, bacon, home fries, and pancakes. Hundreds of homemade doughnuts will be available for purchase. A flea market featuring gently used items will also open at 6:30 a.m. Music by Gerald Hoover’s Men’s Chorus will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Activities for children, which will begin at 9 a.m., will include rides and games, and a barrel train will be on site. At 10:30 a.m., weather permitting, an ultra-light plane will fly over the event for a candy drop.

and a pig stomach dinner. Each year, the event also features a chicken barbecue. Drive-through pickup for chicken will remain at the Wheat Ridge campus, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Chicken barbecue will be available to eat-in at the new Farm Crest location. Additional food items for sale will include hand-cut french fries, sub sandwiches, both ham and cheese and roast beef sandwiches, chili, salad, fruit smoothies, soft pretzels, baked goods, and soft ice cream. According to Swailes, special Make a Difference opportunities will be presented to bidders. Make a Difference is a special chance to help cover the difference between what insurance covers and the actual cost for residents who have exhausted their resources. Bids will be accepted in increments of $150. “Make A Difference has been pretty popular, noted Swailes. “People don’t always win (the auction) for the thing they wanted, but they still want to donate. Passage stated that the 2017 fundraiser brought in nearly $125,000 and that organizers hope to surpass that goal with this year’s event. Readers who would like to see photos of auction items or learn more about the event may visit www.fairmount homes.org. Absentee bids will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.

Paws In The Park from pg 1 breeding facility at the age of 11 months. To help Leo’s Helping Paws raise funds for its mission, Sandy Jones and Joanne Pursel began holding the Paws in the Park event last year. This year’s event, which is billed as a festival for dogs and their owners, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registered dogs will have the opportunity to participate in contests including a canine costume contest that was popular at the 2017 Paws in the Park event. “The canine costume contest was a huge hit, noted Jones. According to Krista Jenkins, who is organizing the 2018 contest, costumes vary from homemade to storebought. Pursel recalled that members of one family incorporated their children in a stroller by coordinating their costumes with their dog’s. Games will include musical hoops, a version of musical chairs where dogs sit in hoops when the music stops. Other games

Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, founders of Leo’s Helping Paws, set a specific goal when they created the organization more than four years ago to support dog rescue groups by providing grants. “We knew in order to save dogs, you needed funding (because) vet bills are a major part of a rescue, said Styer. “We knew we needed to fundraise, so we founded a team. “We wanted to help all rescues, Buchter added, noting that rescue organizations that are eligible for grants from Leo’s must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. “We started with (rescues located in) Pennsylvania, but we have added bordering states including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a food and supply bank that accepts food, treats, blankets, towels, and anything else a rescue could use. Leo’s is named after an 11-yearold corgi that was rescued from a local

will also go up for bids. Food trucks that will be on-site at the park will offer barbecue, hamburgers, chicken fingers, french fries, and hot dogs for purchase. Organizers hope to offer vegetarian options as well. According to Styer, Leo’s Helping Paws has given more than $255,000 in grants to more than 100 rescue organizations. “A typical adoption fee could be between $200 and $350, said Styer. “But sometimes a dog will require more than $1,000 of vet care. The adoption fee never covers all that. Buchter added that grants from Leo’s can be crucial to rescues. “A large vet bill can put a rescue under, she noted. Organizers plan to have the Lancaster City Police K-9 Unit return for a demonstration during the event, and at least 10 rescue groups will be in attendance with adoptable dogs. “They bring dogs that are adoptable, but they (can’t be) adopted that day, explained Jones. “They are just for people to (meet). New Jersey-based author Patti Kerr, known for her book “Magical Dogs, will sell her book “Magical Dogs 2, donating all the profits from the day to the cause. “She writes about rescued dogs and their stories, explained Pursel. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Bedouin Fires, a folk and rock group, formed in 2005 when Scott Weyman, providing drums and vocals, and Caley Roark, playing the keyboard, horn, and harmonica, united their musical talents for a variety show. After Roark recruited friend Kirk Landis, a singer and guitarist, the trio initially held practices in the local high school’s band room. The band expanded its sound in 2007 when mutual friend John Girvin joined the group to sing and play the bass. The quartet played throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, winning a Battle of the Bands competition in 2010 and co-headlining the 2012 Barnfire Music Festival. The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will offers tours of the upper levels of the 1743 Sisters’ House on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors to the historic Ephrata Cloister often ask what is upstairs. Special limited tours will reveal the answer to the question with visits to the upper levels of the 1743 Sisters’ House. During the work to return the colonial site to an original appearance, the upper levels received minimal restoration. They contain 275-year-old floors, shelves, benches, and hearths, allowing historians to explore the technologies, materials, and techniques employed by the builders in the 1700s. Access to the upper levels is restricted to help preserve these rare resources. Tours of the upper floors are limited to

visitors age 10 and up, and require good eyesight, along with the ability to climb steep and winding stairs. Canes, walkers or other assistance devices are not permitted. Persons with breathing or heart problems may encounter difficulties on this tour. Tours exploring the history of the Ephrata Cloister on the first floor of the historic structures will be offered at 10 a.m., noon, 2 and 3:30 p.m. at the standard admission rate. Scheduled tours throughout the day can only accommodate 20 guests, and advanced reservations are encouraged, with some limitations. There is an admission fee. Original compositions, modern takes on traditional hymns, and covers of rock anthems all mix in the band’s stage performances. Admission to the event is free. GTGH from pg 1 by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster County,” said Stengle. The story of Music for Everyone may be explored by visiting https://musicforeveryone.org. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, said that the

ministry cares for low-income individuals with mental health issues in a personal care facility based on the Nehemiah Homes model that offers interdependent living experiences. More information about the organization may be found at www.faithfriendship.org. Beth Horst, who founded The Edible Classroom with Grace Julian, said that they are excited to be working with local schools to create or maintain learning gardens. “We work to customize a program for the teachers, and everything is hands-on and experiential,” said Horst, who noted that summer programming is offered as well. “From seed to table, (the students) learn how to plant, tend, harvest, and eat the food they have grown,” said Horst. Information about can be found by visiting www.theedibleclassroom.org. GTGH founder Jenn Knepper noted that this year, the fair will be held close to Monday, Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was first celebrated in 1948, making 2018 the 70th anniversary of the first observance. “We will have a scavenger hunt for the children to find various declarations of the articles for human rights from among the nonprofits at the event,” said Knepper. Participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. A staffed human rights display will offer information and provide interested parties with the opportunity to ask questions. Readers who would like to learn more about GTGH may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

To put a new spin on Ernie the Muppet’s classic song, “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one, who makes fundraising so much fun.” Indeed, for three decades, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center has centered its biggest fundraiser around the floating bath toys. Schreiber supporters may purchase tickets for the 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race, which will be held as part of a Rubber Duckie Festival on Sunday, Sept. 9, in Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Each ticket corresponds with either one of 20,000 yellow racing ducks or one of 5,000 blue racing ducks that will be dropped into the Conestoga River at 5 p.m. Among the yellow ducks, the first 50 across the finish line will win prizes for people holding those tickets. The speediest yellow duck will win its ticketholder a $1,000 Visa gift card. For blue ducks, the first 10 finishers will win one of the higher-value prizes, including a Weber grill, a flat-screen TV, and a mountain bike. For each ticket purchase, supporters will receive a souvenir duckie. This year’s theme of a Schreiber Animal Kingdom includes more than a dozen different animal ducks, ranging from cows and tigers to cats and yaks. Each ticket for a blue duck comes with a limited-edition dinosaur duck. In honor of the 30th anniversary, retired racing ducks may also

be purchased as supplies last. Tickets are on sale now at the center, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, and at www.schreiberpediatric.org/ducks. They will also be available at various locations around Lancaster County between now and race day, including Root’s Country Market and Go ‘N Bananas. Readers may check the Schreiber web page for the complete list of sales locations. The Rubber Duckie Festival will be held at Central Park at 2 p.m. The outdoor affair will feature carnival games, pony rides, inflatables, face painting, crafts, food vendors, and more. All proceeds from the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will benefit the therapy and education programs of Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that provides physical, occupational, and speech-language therapies, as well as educational and recreational programs, to thousands of children in central Pennsylvania living with congenital and acquired disabilities and developmental delays. The center aims to provide everything needed for all of life’s challenges so that families and children can reach their dreams and visions, enhancing every child’s unique capabilities and helping them to achieve their fullest potential. For more information, readers may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org or call 717-393-0425.

A Woman’s Concern, a local pregnancy resource center founded in 1972, has been located in downtown Lancaster on Duke Street for more than 20 years. In August, the organization opened a new location at 1102 Millersville Pike to help support the community. The new location triples the size of the center’s original home office, enabling it to reach a new quadrant of the city while expanding its programs, services, and resources to serve more families. It will still maintain a presence in Lancaster city with its East Chestnut Street satellite location. A Woman’s Concern continues to offer free, confidential care, support, and services to women and families in need. To celebrate the opening of the new location, A Woman’s Concern will host an open house event on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will provide an opportunity for members of the community to tour the new facilities, as well as meet the staff and some of the volunteers. The celebration will include face painting, small games for children, free diapers and wipes for anyone in need, a chance to register to win a new car seat or stroller, and an opportunity to learn about the classes and services provided by A Woman’s Concern. The center provides free pregnancy
