ErinBlank, committee chair for Cub Scout Pack 83, has good memories of her children taking part in Scouting. “My kids learned friendship, leadership, and empathy,” Blank stated. “They both had a good place to be able to get the clumsiness of childhood worked out over the years.” In addition to the lessons and growth her children experienced, Blank and other parents found joy in the experience.

“We really enjoyed the fun of watching these kids do crazy stuff and achieve and be recognized for their efforts,” she said.

The advent of COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 interfered with the normal activities of the group. “During COVID, the pack shut down because the leaders were

concerned about safe policies,” Blank reported. Cub Pack 83, which is open to boys and girls in the greater Conestoga Valley (CV) area, did not reinstate activities once COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. “This summer, Boys Troop 83 and Girls Troop 82, which are older Scouts, realized there weren’t enough Cubs coming up through the packs to bolster our ranks,” said Blank.

The remedy is to open Cub Scout Pack 83 again, beginning with a special kickoff event on Monday, Oct. 2, starting at 6 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. “We are bringing back Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary to our meeting place (for the evening),” said Blank. Forgotten Friend will present a program by Jesse Rothacker featuring live snakes, lizards, and turtles. Blank invited

Fundraisers couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.

Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in its eighth year of battling human trafficking

and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.

“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their support financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the backyard of the community. do so much if we had more funding.’”

The Freedom Walk is a 2-mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.

“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”

“It’s a next step for people to learn about our organization,” Thurston continued. “People are walking for people who have been enslaved. It’s beautiful because we have survivors who attend. It says, ‘We’re all in this fight together. Let’s do better.’”

Founded in 2019, the Freedom Walk will have its fourth iteration this year. In 2022, some 200 individuals took part in the event. Thurston would like to see that number rise to 250 or 300 participants this time around.

Since its inception, the Freedom Walk has included live music at the park to enhance its atmosphere and a survivors’ tent for people to learn firsthand about the devastating effects of human trafficking.

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said

Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help. The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.”

Hope.Inspire.Love. seeks to combat sex trafficking and sexual exploitation through traumainformed mentorship, outreach and awareness and prevention education.

“Our (mission) isn’t a short-term relationship; it’s a long-term solution,” Thurston said. “We started with prevention and education. But

I said, ‘We’ve got to do more.’ As we’ve evolved, we’ve added more staff. We developed our mentoring program and our job skills training. I think we’ve grown more than we expected.”

For additional information about the Freedom Walk or to register, go to www.hopeinspirelove .org/freedomwalk.

Church sets spaghetti meal

The community is invited to a free hot meal, to be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3183 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The meal will be hosted by the church’s mission committee.

The meal will consist of spaghetti, meatballs and sauce, a tossed salad, garlic bread or plain bread, applesauce, and a dessert. The meal will be served in the handicapped-accessible Smith Fellowship Hall.

local boys and girls who are interested in joining the pack and their families to come and enjoy the interactive and educational animal show.

Blank noted that leaders from Scouts BSA Troops 82 and 83 will provide den chiefs and adult den leaders who are ready to help parents who are new to the Cub Scout experience. “Our goal is to help mentor parents this year so that next year, they can take the pack in more exciting directions,” explained Blank. “We have the support for them.” She added that while the pack meets in CV, children from adjoining areas are also welcome. “We have (participants) from outside CV,” she said. “If it’s a good fit, we will take them.”

According to Blank, the youngsters who participated prior to COVID-19 restrictions took part in a number of activities. “They slept on the USS New Jersey just outside Philly, and they also slept on the USS Constitution in Baltimore,” she recalled. Blank reported that the pack members also hiked in Gettysburg and canoed in local waters.

Blank encouraged families to come to the kickoff event and bring younger children along. “We expect whole families to be present, so parents and younger siblings are welcome,” she said. “Our Cub Scout pack believes in family participation, and leaders are used to (smaller children) running around.”

“He said, ‘We are ramping up our program, and we need more cars,’” recalled Miller, who has a connection to Concordville Nissan in Glen Mills. Miller’s first move was to purchase three Rogues, but she went on to purchase a total of 12 vehicles to help participants to go into the community to work. “We have received grants for all these vehicles from multiple areas,” said Miller, who noted individual in grants of $25,000 helped her to purchase pre-owned certified vehicles. “Concordville Nissan believes in what we do,” explained Miller. “They work

with us to keep (a vehicle purchase) within our grant budget.”

Participants who take part in two LVS programs are driven to community locations to work. “We have Small Group Employment (SGE),” said Miller, who noted that the program takes a group of participants to perform tasks such as cleaning at a local business such as Conestoga Wood Specialties, Signature Custom Cabinetry, or Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. She added that LVS is looking for more local businesses to take part in this program.

A second program is called Community Participation Specialists (CPS). In CPS, participants visit nonprofits

such as CrossNet, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, and Unto in Mount Joy. A group of participants called SHINESharing Hope In Neighborly Encounters - makes lasagna in local church kitchens and then delivers meals to area residents who are struggling in some way.

“We need drivers,” noted Miller, who added that the ratio of one staff member to three participants is the norm. Drivers may start picking up participants as early as 5:30 a.m.

“It’s not just driving,” noted Miller, who drives participants herself. “(A driver) may have to help the participant in, and buckle the seatbelt,” she said. “Some participants do not have the dexterity in their fingers (to fasten the belt).” LVS has two

wheelchair buses, as well.

LVS is looking to expand its Strengthening Pathways program, which offers diverse adult education opportunities for the enhancement of individuals’ skills and quality of life. “We have a waiting list for participants,” said Miller, who added that the vocational rehabilitation program is expanding into Chester County, as well. “Two of the cars travel to Chester (County) to work with participants at jobs,” said Miller, whose affinity for the transportation piece is related to her work scheduling vehicles, checking pre-trip inspection reports, scheduling maintenance and inspections, and dealing with mechanical issues.
