Scout Troops Hold Flag Retirement Ceremony On Sept. 11, members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 83 and Troop 82 of Leola gathered at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, to hold a retirement ceremony for a number of flags that had become too worn and tattered to fly. The service began at 6:30 p.m. when Scoutmaster Steve Eddy welcomed the gathering. The gathering then moved outside the building to remove the flag that flies outside the ULTWMA building in preparation for its retirement. Lancaster County Commissioner Craig Lehman and Rep. Keith Greiner both attended the program and each gave a short talk. The parade back into the auditorium was led by master of ceremonies Zach Slezak. Several troop members took part in the symbolic retirement ceremony, beginning with the salute to the flag.

Following a moment of silence to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country, a prayer was led by pastor John Oechslin. The Scouts, led by Lance Rich and Harrison Booth of Troop 83, separated the colors of the ULTWMA flag, beginning by using scissors to remove the blue field from the stripes and then separating the red and white stripes. Rich read “Remember Me,” a piece that encourages listeners to remember to treat the flag with honor. The benediction was given by Oechslin. Following the retirement of the flag, the gathering moved to the back of the building, where fire pits had been prepared to ceremonially burn hundreds of retired flags. Both Lehman and Greiner remained at the event to help dispose of the flags.

BCS Schedules Fall Festival Bethany Christian Services (BCS) of Central Pennsylvania will hold a Fall Festival at Little Springs Farm, 1690 Reading Road, Mohnton, on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date for the event will be Saturday, Nov. 9. Children and their parents are invited to enjoy the festival, which will include food and animals. BCS representatives will make short presentations about the organization and the equine-assisted services provided by its partnership with Little Springs Farm. Cindy Martin of Little Springs Farm noted that she has seen children changed by the services the farm can offer in conjunction with BCS. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing a child progress from chaos to a place of healing,” she said. “I love See Fall Festival pg 6

Members of Boy Scouts Troop 82 and 83 of Leola gathered at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association building on Sept. 11 for a flag retirement ceremony. The ceremony, which has become a tradition in Leola, was attended by local representatives, area veterans, and other residents.

Aaron Wingert of Lancaster was 30 when he experienced his first epileptic seizure. “Everything is normal in your life, and then you wake up in the back of an ambulance,” he said. Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder. “I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled. Lancaster resident Kerri Michnya never remembers a time without See Walk To End Epilepsy pg 2

Michnya is EFEPA’s Lancaster County resource coordinator. She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said. “I feel really fortunate.” Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster. “It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.” The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening ceremony. The walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained. The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play on an inflatable slide. Refreshments will be provided at the event, and an afterparty will be held at Yorgos, 66 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There will also be opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes at the walk. Additionally, vendors will be on hand to offer information about pharmaceuticals, CBD, and more. The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held rain or shine. There is no charge to attend the event, but fundraising is encouraged. A minimum fundraising amount has been set to receive an event T-shirt. Proceeds from the walk will fund research into treatments and cures as well as resources for people with the disorder. Event sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information or to register for the walk, readers may visit www.EpilepsyWalkPA.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Oct. 11. Individuals may also register at the event. Michnya may be reached for questions at kmichnya@efepa.org or 717-449-1872.

seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10. Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication. DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to remove her amygdala, the area of the brain where her seizures were centralized. She considers herself cured. “Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.” Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t help with the emotional aspect.” Thankfully, he said, he discovered the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania (EFEPA) through social media a few years ago. Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures, stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of understanding people is hugely important.

Kim Campbell To Speak About Alzheimer’s Moravian Manor will present its 2019 Engaging Community Dinner on Monday, Oct. 14, at Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, titled “An Evening With Kim Campbell: My Family’s Journey With Alzheimer’s,” will begin with a private reception at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 8 p.m. Kim was married to country and pop musician Glen Campbell for 34 years until Glen’s death in August of 2017, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me” shared the family’s journey and opened a national conversation about Alzheimer’s. Determined to help other families on the same journey, Kim founded CareLiving.org to encourage caregivers to take care of themselves and to improve the quality of life of families living with dementia through education, advocacy and real-world change. She also established the Kim and Glen Campbell Foundation to

promote the use of music to improve physical and mental health and thereby supplement or reduce the need for pharmacological interventions. Among her many accolades, Kim recently received the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation’s Great Ladies Award, the Us Against Alzheimer’s Women Making Change Award, and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Caregiver Leadership Award. To register for the dinner, readers may visit www.moravianmanor.org.

CV Field Hockey Upends Warwick 2-1 in OT by Leah Sintic

continued pressure paid off five minutes into overtime when Claire Ortiz connectUndefeated in league play and sited with the backboard for the golden ting on top of Section One, CV field goal, off an assist from Sydney Weaver. hockey was still riding the momentum “The whole team is having fun, worksurge from their milestone win over ing hard, and improving every day,” celpreviously undefeated Penn Manor ebrated head coach Kelly Dearolf. when they entered last week to hand Diving into the latter half of the seathe Warwick Warriors a 2-1 defeat. son, the triumph over Warwick marks the first of CV’s repeat showdowns with each of the Section One teams, and still boasting a flawless league record of 7-0-the team is hoping to keep that streak alive FOOTBALL Saturday September 21st, the Buckskins found their first victory of the season, taking down the Solanco Golden Mules by a score of 42-28. The Mules were the hosts and entered the contest having won their previous three, but the Bucks were hungry for that first win, snapping Solanco’s win streak with visits to the end zone in all four periods. “It was a great win for the team. Our kids played exceptional defense against Solanco and executed on offense,” celebrated head coach Gerad Novak. CV’s Zachary Sornoza ignited the crew with a first period fumble recovery that he delivered home to get the Bucks on the scoreboard. Solanco had the answer with a rushing touchdown of their own in the quarter, but a 13-0 run for the Bucks in the second gave them the upper hand heading into the latter half. CV’s Derek Ulishney played a monumental role in that defensive success, coming up with four solo tackles, two tackles for a loss, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a pass break-up. “He [Ulishney] was all over the field Photo by Mark Palczewski making plays,” credited Novak. “When Buckskin captain Carli Eberly battles for the ball during Conesto- Solanco ran the ball his way, he was in ga Valley’s 2-1, Section One victory over Warwick last Monday in the right spot and made the play.” Ulishney also put in big numbers Witmer. The Bucks got ahead in the first half with a goal scored by Carli Eberly, assisted by Ellie Livingston. The Warriors retaliated in the second half, knotting the game at 1-1 and forcing extra minutes. Conestoga dominated possession, outshooting the Warriors 10-6, and earning 12 corners in the match. The

on offense with five receptions, totaling 38 yards, and a fourth period touchdown. Zion Gadsden cruised his way into the end zone on a 20-yard run, and quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus found Zach Fisher for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the second. Buckskin kicker Nathan Heck went four-for-four in PAT successes, completing his first three before the break. Second half excitement built after an 88-yard kickoff return from CV’s Jaiyell Plowden picked up another six points, immediately followed by a two-point conversion from Stoltzfus to Eddie Hernandez. Stoltzfus wasn’t done earning his 190 passing yards and went on to find Ulishney on a six-yard pass, and Fisher again, this time on a 53-yard pass, for two more touchdown completions. “This is the first game we have won all three phases of the football gamePhoto by Bob Devonshire offense, defense, and special teams,” The Buckskins’ Josh Mathiot blocks Solanco’s Seth Harnish in concluded Novak, planning for much Conestoga Valley’s 42-28, Section Two win in Quarryville on more of that success in the remainder September 21.

down in quick sets has been a theme for the Lady Bucks all season, reflected in their 13-1 overall record and 6-1 in league play, and is evidence of both their talent and strategy. “The girls know that if we perform and finish matches without delay, we will be fresher the longer the team season goes on,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. “We needed to play well in order to finish with victories over Penn Manor and McCaskey. Each individual wanted to push themselves in order to help the team.” GIRLS’ SOCCER It was a week of mixed emotion and very few goals, but Lady Bucks soccer showed how to bounce back after taking their first league hit, a 1-0 loss to Hempfield, and flipped the script for a 1-0 overtime win against Manheim Township to stay at the top of the LL Section One standings. On the heels of their Monday loss to Hempfield, the CV squad had to regroup quickly with another formidable opponent on the horizon, slated to meet the Blue Streaks of Manheim Township last Wednesday. Township’s only league blemish entering the showdown was from the earlier season clash with the Buckskins in which CV topped Township 2-0, both goals scored by Madison Delgado. This contest’s outcome was much the same as CV outlasted the Streaks in an overtime battle determined by a single goal-again supplied by Delgado. Both teams saw their chances in regulation play, with the Streaks outshooting the Bucks 5-3, but CV keeper Alyson Riggle held fast to gather five crucial saves preserving the shutout. CV’s 5-1 league record currently ranks them number one in the Section One pool as they head into the final weeks of the regular season schedule. VOLLEYBALL Split results added both a win and a loss to the CV volleyball record last week, giving them an even 3-3 record in league play, and a 5-4 mark overall. Thursday night’s hard-fought battle at Penn Manor went in favor of the Comets after a full five-game match (16-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13). Despite CV clinching the first two games led by Savannah Byers’ offensive efforts (14 kills), the Comets came roaring back to take the final three. Jenna Sweitzer dished three aces attempting to ignite the Buckskins, and Charlize Miller came up with a game-high 32 assists. On defense, Rebecca Hartranft scrambled to supply 25 digs, but the Bucks were unable to hang on once momentum shifted to Penn Manor. The CV squad started the week strong with a sweep over Solanco on Monday, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-21), earning their third league win of the season. CeCe Leininger’s 10 kills and five aces were a major contribution to the overall energy and outcome of the contest, with 22 assists coming from Miller. Lexi McEvoy put up two blocks on defense and Hartranft supplied eight digs. BOYS’ SOCCER Boys’ soccer suffered a pair of losses last week while hosting Manheim Township and visiting Hempfield, but CV’s Richard Valverde-Gomez had a strong showing, putting in all three Buckskin goals in the contests. On Thursday the Bucks slipped behind the Blue Streaks Township by a score of 6-2. CV’s Valverde-Gomez was the first to notch a goal for either

club, scoring his first of two after only three minutes had transpired, but Township got on a roll responding with two first half goals and added four more in the second. Valverde-Gomez sent his second shot into the netting during the second half to lessen the deficit, and on the other end of the field keeper Luke Snader grabbed nine saves in the loss. A 5-1 loss marked last Tuesday’s trip to Hempfield, in a contest where CV looked strong up 1-0 at the half, but once Hempfield started scoring in the second half they ran away with the win. CV’s goal was supplied by ValverdeGomez and assisted by Aiden O’Sullivan. Keeping their heads high, the club heads into this week hoping to turn things around in league showdowns against Warwick and Cedar Crest.

Blue Ridge Communications has announced that it is again partnering with Keystone Military Families to act as a collection site for the Stockings For Soldiers program. The program generally ships 8,000 to 10,000 holiday stockings to American servicemen and women stationed around the world. The stockings are filled with donations of food, hygiene items, and other requested items, as well as holiday decorations and cards. From Oct. 1 to Saturday, Nov. 16, Blue Ridge will again use its retail centers throughout its service areas as donation collection sites. In October, a display will be set up in the lobby of the Blue Ridge office in Ephrata, which is located at 804 Academy Heights Ave. Also available will be brochures and a list of the items that are most requested. The public is invited to drop off donated items and Christmas cards with messages of hope and cheer. A list of requested care package items can also be found on the Keystone Military Families Facebook page. Monetary donations are also needed to help defray the cost of shipping the stockings. For a set donation,
