Weaverland Movie Night To Highlight Recent Release By Ann Mead Ash

Ken Martin and the Aglow Committee of Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community are excited to share the movie “I Can Only Imagine” with ELANCO-area residents. “We have been hearing about the movie,” said Martin, who added that a number of members of the committee had seen the film earlier this year at a Lancaster County theater. “(Those who saw it) were impressed, so we thought it would be a good thing to invite people in the local community to see,” added Martin. LMS Plans Annual Celebration Friendship Community Dinner To Focus On “Simple Joys” By Ann Mead Ash

When organizers of the Friendship Community 2018 fall banquet were searching for a keynote speaker, one staff member remembered that a friend of hers had heard “Chewbacca Mom” speak. “(The friend had) said, ‘This person is great, and she has a great message,’” recalled Kyle Gamble, marketing assistant at Friendship Community. “We were looking for someone to bring laughter and joy with a faith background,” added Gamble, noting, “This is a speaker (who) will be different from those we have had in the past.” Candace Payne, also known as “Chewbacca Mom,” filled the bill for Friendship organizers, who have engaged her to speak at the annual Friendship Community banquet on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Shady Maple See Banquet pg 2

Children’s activities and the annual Iron Bridge Run will both be part of the Lancaster Mennonite School homecoming celebration scheduled for Oct. 5 and 6 at the school’s Lancaster campus. By Ann Mead Ash

Aubrey Kreider, director of marketing and communications at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), wants area residents to know that they need not have an affiliation with the school to attend the homecoming barbecue. “People who aren’t connected to the

school should feel welcome to come to the barbecue,” said Kreider. New additions to the Friday night activities designed especially for children will include a hayride and face painting. Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) will hold festivities on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6, which will combine homecoming events with opportunities See LMS Homecoming pg 7

To that end, the organization serves 120 clients in 24 group homes. Friendship offers two day programs, home-based services, and an apartment complex in Ephrata. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but seating is limited, and reservations must be made by Friday, Oct. 12. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about Friendship may visit www.FriendshipCommunity.ne t. Donations Sought For Military Personnel Keystone Military Families invites the community to donate to its Stocking for Soldiers program. The organization’s mission is to provide caring support for deployed military members in all branches of service, no matter where they are stationed. It provides care packages, holiday packages, letters, cards, and more to military personnel. Kyle Lord founded the program in 2002. To date, this initiative has helped thousands of troops. All requests come directly from the troops, their families, or someone who knows a military member. Each package is custom made depending on the needs and requests of the troops. The program’s goal is to ship 10,000 stuffed stockings to military members this year. Community members are invited to donate signed Christmas cards, food, hygiene items, and other requested items, along with monetary donations to offset shipping costs. Die-cut Christmas card paper stockings will be provided for a perstocking fee in order to defray mailing expenses. The goal is to include one of the cards with each stocking mailed. Individuals who wish to donate may drop off supplies at Blue Ridge Communications, 804 Academy Heights Drive, Ephrata, between Monday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 18. A display will be set up in the lobby in October with brochures and a list of requested items. A list of requested care package items can also be found at www.facebook.com/ KeystoneMilitaryFamilies.

Movie Night from pg 1 Valley Road, East Earl, on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. No admission will be charged, but a freewill offering will be received. “I Can Only Imagine,” starring J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid, is based on the true story behind the creation of the MercyMe song of the same title. “I Can Only Imagine,” written by MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard, has received more air play than any other Christian contemporary song. The movie delves behind the music to explore Millard’s relationship with his father, a man filled with pain and regret that he masked with pride and anger. To deal with his own pain, Millard too chose to wear a mask. When both men learn the power of forgiveness, their lives are changed. Martin said that he hopes

audience members will be able to relate to the subject matter. “The point is for people to experience the message (of the movie),” said Martin. “The focus is on reconciliation and forgiveness.” Funds received from the freewill offering will be used to offset the costs of bringing the movie to the church to show. Money received over and above those costs will be donated to the CrossNet Food Pantry, located in the new CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center, 129 Franklin St., New Holland, and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, which is located at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill. Readers who have questions may call Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community at 717445-6348.

Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community will host a showing of “I Can Only Imagine” on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

“Gracenotes” Will Debut At Apple Festival

Reflections on Our Holy Holidays

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Two notable musicians will be featured during the 33rd annual Apple Festival hosted by Boehm’s Chapel Society. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the campus of Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street. Vocalist Katie Wieand of Strasburg and woodwind specialist Tim Price of Reading will perform with Gracenotes, a 20-piece jazz band from Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street. The group was formed by Darin Esterly, the music and arts coordinator at GCC, who plays saxophone in the band. Gracenotes is one facet of the music ministry at GCC, with many of the band members also playing in the congregation’s worship bands. Gracenotes

I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth. When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up. I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to find our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world. It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind. Anyone can download a free copy of the book Reflections on Our Holy Holidays by Lloyd Elias Scalyer. You may choose a pdf file, an ePUB file compatible with most eBook readers, or both. Instructions to do this are as follows: Go to the homepage of the website for Lititz Institute, www.lititzinstitute.org. On the homepage there is a rotating picture at the top of the page. The second picture which comes up is one of the book and the caption “Discover the Great Feasts of our Jewish Heritage.” Click on the lower right corner of this picture for a free download. Depending on your Internet speed loading the second page is variable, but in most cases the picture changes several times a minute. After clicking, you will come to a page with a copy of the book and a heading “Free EBook.” Immediately below this is the option to downlod the book. If you choose the pdf file, note the first two pages are blank; and there is no cover. If you have problems or questions, contact Lititz Institute by e-mail via the website.

erinsen. He participated in GCC’s worship conference last year, which was a highlight for Esterly and other GCC musicians. Price will have several solos during the Apple Festival performance, which will comprise two half-hour sets at 11 a.m. and noon. Wieand will also solo with Gracenotes. She holds a Master of Music in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory. Additionally, while studying in Nashville, Wieand served as a backup singer for Amy Grant, Steve Green, Martina McBride, and Nichole Nordeman. She now performs and teaches locally, and she leads the children’s music ministry at GCC. Wieand will perform jazz favorites, including “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Blue Moon,” and “Embraceable You.” Attendees are encouraged to bring

lawn chairs to relax during the concert and when taking a break from shopping the handcrafted items made by numerous vendors. Tours of the 1791 Boehm’s Chapel and a video outlining the story of Martin Boehm’s call to spread the Gospel in the 18th century will be available throughout the day. Additionally, there will be a wide variety of apple-themed food offered for purchase, including homemade apple butter, dumplings, and nuggets; homemade apple ice cream; and apple bread made by Grandview UMC members. Stehman Memorial UMC will sell hot and cold luncheon foods, and Boehm’s UMC will offer baked goods. For more information about the Apple Festival, readers may email boehmschapel@gmail.com, call 717-872-4133, or visit www.boehmschapel.org.

Schreiber Hosts Rubber Duckie Race Schreiber Pediatric held its 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sept. 9. The event raised more than $115,000 that will go directly to support Schreiber’s array of therapy and educational services. This year’s Duckie Day at Lancaster County Central Park was curtailed because of heavy rain. Schreiber still managed a successful Duckie campaign because of higher than expected Duckie ticket sales and generous sponsorship support. Day-of sales fell short of the average total of $10,000 because of the weather, but supporters have helped erase that shortfall by making contributions after the event. The largest postrace gift came from Orrstown Bank, which had originally sponsored the event and sold tickets in its Lancaster County branches. Orrstown Bank contributed an additional $15,000. Donations can

still be made via check or at www.schreiberpediatric.org/donate. This year’s event sold about 15,000 yellow and blue tickets. At the end of the festival, Schreiber ambassadors Kami Appleby, Giuliana and Paxton Grasso and Connery Pham randomly selected winning tickets, and local news reporter Mike Straub read the winning numbers. The prize-winning numbers from the yellow duck race are: $1,000 Visa gift card, 01826; Family Fun package, 13995; Dinner and a Movie Package, 04938; Local Fun for Two Package, 04508; Out to Eat Package, 08035; Ice Cream Package, 04934; Pampered Mom

Package, 00999; Handmade Wooden Toy Gift Basket, 04708; Fitness Package, 06886; and carpet cleaning kit, 08695. The prize-winning numbers from the blue duck race are: Weber grill, 0557; 39-inch flat-screen television, 0299; Hyper mountain bike, 0089; Target gift card, 0301; wine lovers gift basket, 1282; Tanger Outlets gift card, 1250; Furry Friend gift basket, 1359; Primitives by Kathy gift basket, 1357; Gardening gift basket, 1308; and lottery ticket tree, 0136. Ticket holders have until Tuesday, Oct. 9, to claim a prize, and they must present their numbered ticket stub as proof of purchase.

Proceeds from the annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival benefit the services and programs of Schreiber Pediatric, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that provides physical, occupational and speech-language therapies, as well as educational and recreational programs for thousands of children in central Pennsylvania living with congenital and acquired disabilities and developmental delays. Schreiber’s goal-oriented approach maximizes each child’s ability to function as independently as possible within the community and turn disabilities into abilities. Venture Crew 1861 Fife and Drum Corps, Gettysburg, which is chartered by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. Scoutmaster Steve Eddy welcomed the gathering and noted that the ceremony is now held yearly. He thanked Lancaster County Commissioner Craig Lehman and Rep. Keith Greiner for attending. He also introduced master of ceremonies Scout Austin Marburger, who read the instructions for retiring a flag that is no longer a fitting emblem for display. Several troop members took part in the symbolic retirement ceremony, beginning with the salute to the flag. Following a moment of silence to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country, a prayer was led by pastor John Oechslin, Boy Scouts of America district executive. Oechslin referenced those who were killed during the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. Greiner spoke, noting the importance of a ceremony being held on Patriot Day. “We are gathered here today to witness a changing of the guard,” said Greiner, “We are privileged to live in this country and under this flag. May we always be thankful for the sacrifices that

were made for us and the liberties those sacrifices were made to preserve.” Lehman also spoke about the occurrences of Sept. 11, 2001. He noted that he was struck by the fact that ordinary people did extraordinary things. Lehman referenced the phone conversation between Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer and his wife and the action Beamer and other passengers took that saved lives that day. “It’s a reminder that everything we do every day has importance. We should do what we are called to do to the best of our abilities,” he said. “When we are united as one, there is no better country in the world.” The Scouts then began separating the colors of the War Memorial flag, beginning by using scissors to remove the blue field from the stripes and then separating the red and white stripes. Scout Devin Nafziger read “Remember Me,” a piece that encourages listeners to remember to treat the flag with honor. Following the retirement of the flag, the gathering moved to the back of the building, where fire pits had been prepared to consume hundreds of retired flags. Venture Crew 1861 Fife and Drum Corps played during the burning of the retired flags.

Orange St., Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. Marichelle Roque-Lutz started writing her memoir five years ago for her four daughters, and she waited two years for their approval to publish it. The 300-page memoir encompasses her life and those of her daughters in the Philippines, a threeyear sojourn in Nigeria that separated her from two of her daughters, and the family’s reunification and assimilation into American life as immigrants. Roque-Lutz previously was an associate research editor of Chicago magazine. In the Philippines, she was editor of the weekly magazine Woman’s Home Companion before marrying her second husband and immigrating to the United States in 1981. Cloister Dumpling Sale Planned purchase apple dumplings. This year, the apple dumplings will be joined by apple and pumpkin pies. The event supports the return of original artifacts to the Cloister museum collection.

Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (PCA&D) has announced the artists for the 2018 Mosaic Project, an annual multicultural exhibition and educational program for students and families in Lancaster County. Several public events for the Mosaic Project are planned at PCA&D, 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster. An artist lecture with Stan Squirewell will take place on Friday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. An opening reception with Maria Dumlao and Squirewell will be held on Oct. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. An artist lecture with Dumlao will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. The artwork will be on exhibit from Oct. 5 through Friday, Dec. 7. The project will feature Dumlao’s recent work, which explores individual and collective history as viewed through lenses of history, popular culture, mythic folklore, landscapes, and creatures. Squirewell’s work is multilayered and tackles themes such as race and memory through mythology, sacred geometry and science. Dumlao, a visual artist working in various combined media, including film, video, sound, photography, and installation, was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the U.S. with her family. She received a bachelor’s degree in studio art and art history from Rutgers College and a master’s degree in studio art at Hunter College-CUNY. Dumlao is currently an associate professor at Bucks County Community College.

Every year, two nationally renowned artists are invited to participate in PCA&D’s Mosaic Project. These artists are selected for their commitment to creating high quality artwork, which explores themes of individual and cultural identity. Mosaic artists from

previous years are listed at http://pcad.edu/gallery/the-mosaic-project. The educational component of The Mosaic Project is specifically for high school and middle school students. High school students from the School District of Lancaster and the Pequea Valley School District will spend a full day at PCA&D with the Mosaic Project artists, as well as PCA&D faculty and students. In addition, full scholarships will be awarded to middle school students to attend PCA&D’s Exploring the Mosaic Project studio art class on Saturdays in October. CV Lady Booters Post Mixed Results When hosting Township, the Bucks fell behind by two in the first half and were unable to work their way back into contention despite earning seven corners and firing seven shots on goal. CV’s Brooke Eberly gathered three saves in each contest. “We learn from every loss and ever win, and hopefully we come out a better, more experience team,” continued Dearolf. BOYS’ SOCCER CV boys’ soccer has worked their way into a winning streak, picking up two more victories last week to boost their overall record to 6-5 and league record to 4-2. The Buckskins topped both league opponents by the same score, 2-1, including a come-from-behind thriller over Township last Thursday. The Streaks went up early, notching their goal at the 29th minute to hold the only tally heading into the half. “We did not show the best energy and urgency in the first half, but did enough to hold Township to a single goal,” explained head coach Dave Hartlaub. The second half displayed a rejuvenated Buckskin squad finding the equalizer off the foot of Ethan Bredeman. With the clock winding down, and overtime looking inevitable, there was time for CV to create one more attack, a success that culminated in Robbie Krasinski’s tenth goal of the season fired into the back of the Township net with less than a minute remaining in regulation. “In the second half we were able to capitalize on two important moments,” Hartlaub continued. “It was a fantastic team win and performance, and we Photo by Vaughn Brown hope to continue to grow Photo by Vaughn Brown The Buckskins’ Cassandra Malles moves in to chal- Conestoga Valley’s Ella Obioma maneuvers past from it.” lenge the advance by Warwick’s Caitlyn Grodzicki Warwick defender Emily Behn during a Section One In Monday night’s match in Lititz last Monday. during last Monday’s Section Two battle in Lititz. 2-1 takedown of Sophomore Adrianna Neiman tapped in the golden goal against CV girls’ soccer took a hit early on Township, her first this season, 18 last week, falling 5-1 to undefeated minutes into the contest off an assist Hempfield, but rebounded with a 1-0 from Madison Delgado. win over Manheim Township at home Neiman’s goal was one of only two on Thursday. registered shots on goal for CV, but cohesive defense allowed the team to hang on for the win. “We defended very well as a team,” acknowledged head coach Keith Nagley. “They had more possession, but we limited their chances on goal.” Township’s opportunities came in the form of three corners and four shots on goal, but CV keeper Alyson Riggle held her ground and gathered three saves. Tuesday, at Hempfield, the Bucks’ lone goal was netted by Delgado, but the Photo by Vaughn Brown efficient Black Knight CV captain Carli Eberly controls the ball in attack buried CV in a front of Warwick’s Kate Dickow during a deficit they were unable to overcome. The early minutes looked promising for the visitors as Ana Weis dished Delgado the assist that Delgado converted just five minutes in, giving CV the initial lead. The tide quickly turned in favor of the Knights and once they opened scoring on their end, they quickly put distance between the teams on the scoreboard accumulating five unanswered goals. FIELD HOCKEY CV field hockey is hoping to put a quick end to a recent string of loses after picking up two defeats last week. Unable to connect with the back of the cage in either contest, the Bucks continued to battle, playing strong defense to keep the goal count low in a 1-0 loss to Warwick last Monday, followed by a 2-0 loss to Manheim Township on Friday. Against Warwick, defense was the name of the game, with neither team breaking the goal line in regulation, sending the teams into overtime to determine the outcome. Warwick succeeded in notching the lone goal of the match. “We played a strong defensive game against Warwick. We are a young team but we worked hard and never gave up,” encouraged head coach Kelly Dearolf.

Buckskin goalie Brooke Eberly moves out to make one of her three saves in Conestoga Valley’s Section One battle at Warwick last Monday.

Hempfield, the Buckskins came out hot, knocking in both of their goals within the first 10 minutes and held on for the win. “We have been getting better and starting to find our style of play with each game,” noted Hartlaub. Lead scorer, Krasinski opened the scoring, finding the net at the seventh minute, followed three minutes later by another well-placed shot from Bredeman. “The boys knew that we need to start getting results, our start was good, and we were able to frustrate Hempfield with our team defending,” added Hartlaub. Despite the Knights outshooting the Bucks 6-4 and earning eight corner kick opportunities, the CV defense was able to hold them at bay, allowing only one second half ball to cross the goal line. “Hempfield kept coming at us. Our boys did a great job of resisting the pressure and though we gave away a goal with 17 minutes left, the boys stayed focused and saw out the win,” summarized Hartlaub. TENNIS Inclement weather has a way of cramping schedules, and the CV tennis squad felt that squeeze as they packed the remainder of their regular season matches into the final days before the post-season. That meant three straight days of competition for CV, who ended the

week with back-to-back victories over JP McCaskey and Cedar Crest, after falling behind Manheim Township last Wednesday. “We have had a number of rainouts that are now being squeezed into the later part of the season,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. “All teams are in the same boat, so we are trying to take one day at a time.” Friday the girls were riding the momentum of their previous days’ victory and produced a 7-0 sweep over McCaskey. The previous night was a pivotal 61 win over Cedar Crest and showed a resilient CV team, eager to get back up on top after slipping 7-0 to Township on Wednesday. “They came out ready to play. They also knew that with a win against Cedar Crest we would clinch our first LL team playoff berth since 2001,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. Catherine Scala, Jacquelyn McBride, Rachel Eby, and Sophia Steed rose to the challenge in singles play defeating their competitors to seal the triumph. “I mentioned to the team after the loss to Manheim Township that your true character shows when adversity comes. I am pleased with how the girls responded,” praised Gregg. “We stepped up to secure the victory.” The squad’s 5-1 league record (11-1 overall), allows them to sit in the second-place rank of LL Section one

opportunity to win a stay in a Lancaster County bed-and-breakfast. Mom’s House executive director Sara Johns and gala committee member Carole Kirchner related that the client speakers are slated to be an adult who attended Mom’s House as a child, a mother who graduated from the program, and a father who has participated in the program as well. “We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care, Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms and dads to get their educations, Kirchner added. The mission of Mom’s House of Lancaster, located at 415 S. Queen St., Lancaster, is to break the cycle of poverty by helping single parents reach their educational goals. Parents may be pursuing their GED or a master’s degree or anything in between, but all participants have access to parenting and life skills classes, tutoring, a food bank, a children’s clothing closet, a scholarship program, counseling, referral services, and encouragement and support. A major part of the Mom’s House program is the free state-accredited Keystone Star 3 early learning center for children age 6 weeks through preschool age whose parents are Mom’s House participants. “All of our kids leave our program kindergarten ready, or they are set up with an Individualized Education Program, Johns said, noting that a variety of therapists provide services to children at Mom’s House as needed. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years, said gala committee chair Dan Massey. Individual contributions are the primary source of funding Mom’s House, Johns said, and the gala provides additional support. “Community awareness (of the existence and purpose of Mom’s House) is still a big portion of why we do the gala, Massey commented. “In the first two years, it was mostly about awareness while raising some funds. Now it’s 50-50. “(The gala) is a fantastic evening to see what donations have done, Johns said. “Whether you’re sitting at a table with a current mom or listening to a former child speak, it’s inspiring to hear how we’re changing the future. Friday, Oct. 5, has been set as
