BIHUMC Schedules First Crafter’s Bazaar By Ann Mead Ash

Jo Miller, who is co-chairing the Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC) Crafter’s Bazaar with Audrey Miller, is impressed with the creations of the approximately 20 crafters who will have stands at the event. “We have a really nice selection of items,” said Jo, who noted that the organizers will have displays as well. BIHUMC’s first Crafter’s Bazaar will be held at the church, 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to crafts, the event will include food, gently used Christmas items, gift baskets, holiday craft items, and a baked goods table. Among the many craft items that will be available for purchase will be decorative snowmen, birdseed wreaths, hand-poured

palm wax candles, organic beauty products, handmade jewelry, and watercolor paintings. Other vendors will offer handmade cards and paper crafts, wool penny rugs, wall hangings, novelties, sewn dolls and animals, primitive décor, hand-painted slates and wood crafts, and fraktur prints. Food items that vendors will sell will include candy, cookies, and fudge. Treats for animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, will also be available for purchase. Jo, who is known as the “pillow lady,” said that Pillows with a Mission will be at the event. “All the profits from the pillows purchase school supplies for bags we make and fill for Mennonite Central Committee,” Jo explained. Weather permitting, Olivia’s Flower Truck will be outside the church. “(The truck) goes to local farmers markets and special events,” Audrey explained, See Crafter’s Bazaar pg 2

Preparing for the first Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church Crafter’s Bazaar, which will be held at the church on Nov. 9, are (from left) Audrey Miller, Jo Miller, Ida Dudyak, and Marge Denlinger. The event will feature a variety of crafts, lunch items, and gift baskets.

MHALC’s Gifts Of Joy Program Seeks Christmas Donors By Ann Mead Ash

“We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the things that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said McDevitt.

MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues, loneliness is often a problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding that patients may have lost supporting relationships See Gifts Of Joy pg 2

JFS To Show Free Film On Warsaw Ghetto By Ann Mead Ash

Gretchen Gaudioso (left), client and family advocate with Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC), and a donor gathered gifts for the 2018 MHALC Gifts of Joy giveaway last year. Gifts for this year’s program will benefit area residents dealing with mental health issues.

“This story is powerful because it speaks of people in the Warsaw Ghetto and how they clearly saw what their future was like,” said Bob Ruder. Ruder further explained that Jewish Family Services (JFS) was bringing “Who Will Write Our History,” a film written and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 11, as a follow-up to the group’s 2018 showing of “GI Jew.” Showings will be at 2 and 7 p.m. According to Ruder, the film goes back and forth in time, interspersing footage from World War II with presentday actors and actresses. “You go from modern to archival, so you have to pay attention,” said Ruder. “It’s powerful. It’s something that … the community will find informative and educational. See Free Film pg 3

Gifts Of Joy from pg 1 during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area residents struggling with mental illness issues and their families in three main areas - advocacy, support, and education. Advocacy services include suicide prevention programs, including a gunlock program and suicide prevention training, peer

mentorship, and child and family advocacy. Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHALC, provides Individual Education Program (IEP) advocacy and educates students on depression during mental health talks. Support programs include Compeer Lancaster, Community Support Programs, and other support groups, which Leckow noted provide socialization as well as help with specific problems. “Support groups are an alternative or supplement to counseling, where (patients) can talk to peers who are in the same situation,” said Leckow. Education services provided by MHALC include a wellness academy that features a variety of speakers, school-based training, and a partnership with Lancaster County Prison that helps connect inmates to support in prison and after they are released. MHALC strives to stop the progression of mental illness in individuals within the county. “We try to prevent people from coming to a desperate hopeless place,” said Leckow. “We are working for every counselor and service provider out there (to help connect patients with long-term support).” Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mha lancaster.org. Individuals and groups who wish to contribute to the Gifts of Joy program may call 717-397-7461 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

The youths of Hinkletown Mennonite Church will stage a production at Cocalico Middle School, 650 S. Sixth St., Denver. The cast will perform “Second Chance Christmas” and “Frantic Family Vacation” on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 and 7 p.m. This will be the 43rd consecutive year that the church youths have presented a play. Written by Regina M. Ballard, the familyfriendly plays follow the adventures and trials of the Stanton and Hill families as they interact on two separate occasions. The families find out what Christmas is really about when they are stranded together in “Second Chance Christmas.” As their family bond grows, the characters clash in “Frantic

Family Vacation” when a planned peaceful weekend away turns into a series of humorous mishaps. Admission is free, and attendees can reserve their seats 90 minutes prior to each performance. A freewill offering will be received at intermission to support Vida Missions and MDS hurricane relief. For more information, readers may call Hinkletown Mennonite Church at 717-3545213 or search for “Hinkletown Youth Play” on Facebook.

There are some lessons we should never forget.” The film tells the story of historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who led a group of journalists and others who were among the more than 400,000 people trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto by Nazis in 1940. The group determined to keep journals that would tell their story to the people who would come after them. “(The group) journaled and put their journals in tin cans in the basement of a house and covered (them) safely,” said Ruder, who noted that most of those living in the ghetto were exterminated by the Nazis. “People came back and dug through the ruins, and they found these documents hidden away,” he said. “(The journals) were a thorough and comprehensive description of the events that took place in the ghetto.” Ruder explained that JFS of Lancaster is a charitable organization in keeping with Jewish values. The organization helps those in need of food or housing. “We also provide gift cards to grocery stores for people,” said Ruder, who added that JFS also keeps a durable medical equipment loan closet. “If people are in need of walkers or wheelchairs or shower chairs, crutches, and canes, they

can call us and pick out the item, and it’s theirs to use as long as they want with no strings attached,” said Ruder. The organization is nonprofit, nondenominational, and nonsectarian. “We help everybody,” said Ruder. In recent years, JFS expanded its mission to include programs that members believed would interest the greater community. “We have done programs having to do with discrimination and with special needs children in schools … diversity … antiSemitism … and hate,” said Ruder. For Veterans Day 2018, the group decided to offer a free movie. “‘GI Jews’ gives you goosebumps,” said Ruder. “It was very moving and well received by the community.” Because of the positive response to the film, JFS decided to offer another film this Veterans Day. JFS is grateful to the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster for support of the program. Dr. Jack Fischel, founder of the Holocaust Conference at Millersville University, will speak briefly prior to the 2 p.m. showing of the film. According to Ruder, the theater holds 125 attendees. He said that organizers hope to fill the venue for both showings. Although it is free to attend the film, it is necessary to reserve tickets beforehand at www.jfslancaster.org/who-will-write-our -history.html.

Sudan Rebirth Ministry’s (SRM) sixth annual banquet will feature the ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to the United States, Philip Jada Natana, as the guest speaker. Natana, who has extensive diplomatic experience, was involved during the creation of South Sudan in 2011. He assumed his current post in Washington, D.C., in September 2018. Jacob Guot, founder of SRM, will also be a featured guest at this year’s banquet.

The fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Celebration Center of First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The goal of the event is to specifically raise educational scholarship funds for South Sudanese students from kindergarten through college in order to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in the world’s newest country. relationship with Guot, who is a “Lost Boy of Sudan, one of thousands who escaped Sudan’s civil war, walked more than 1,000 miles across East Africa, and grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Guot immigrated to the United States, where he completed his GED, became a citizen, and answered God’s call to serve his people in Bor, South Sudan. A chance meeting with Lancaster’s First United Methodist Church minister Kent Kroehler, who is now retired, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years. He graduated from Lancaster Bible College before moving to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of

a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love. Guot and Kroehler, along with many friends from First United Methodist Church and the Lancaster area, created SRM to support the education and development of South Sudanese people. SRM is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country and is committed to serving the promising students of South Sudan. McBride, Eby Team For Third Place In District by Leah Sintic

The dynamic duo of Jacquelyn McBride and Rachel Eby are still on a roll, extending their individual postseason into November, after their milestone third-place doubles finish in the District III tournament. The performance qualified the pair

for the next level of competition, slating them to compete in the first round of the PIAA State tournament on November 1 at Hershey Racquet Club. “It was a wonderful way for them to demonstrate their heart and competitiveness,” celebrated head coach Dale Gregg. “I am so proud of Jacquelyn and Rachel for never giving up, working

Conestoga Valley’s Rachel Eby, left, and Jacquelyn McBride came from behind to defeat Conrad Weiser’s Janay Lewis and Michelle Timothy, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to finish third in the District Three AAA Doubles Championships at Hershey Racquet Club on October 19 and qualify for the PIAA state championships.

together, and ultimately achieving their goal of getting to States.” McBride and Eby earned their way to the podium finish with wins over competitors from Red Lion (6-2, 6-3), and Dallastown (6-3, 7-6 (5)), before suffering their first defeat from eventual champions, Avery Palandjian and Scotty Reynolds of Manheim Township (6-1, 6-0). The loss bumped the CV pair into a battle for third against Janey Lewis and Michele Timothy from Conrad Weiser, in which McBride and Eby fought back from an early deficit to claim both third place and the bid for States in an intense faceoff 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6). The win over Conrad Weiser didn’t come easily, but the persistence of McBride and Eby coupled with their ability to complement each other’s game earned them the high stakes victory. “The girls picked up for each other. When one was not at their best, the other hit winners,” noted Gregg. The final set held nine match points against the Buckskin twosome, but each time the girls rallied to take the next point. In the tiebreaker round to be awarded to the first team to reach seven points by two, Conrad’s duo held a substantial 6-1 lead and had five consecutive opportunities to finish CV off; but five straight points went in Buckskin favor, allowing McBride and Eby to level out the score and earn two match points of their own. On the second one, an 8-7 advantage, the CV pair got the job done. “We picked up our game and went aggressive,” described Gregg. “After a tremendous rally at the net, we were able to hit a passing shotoff Jacquelyn’s racquet, securing

the victory.” The team portion of CV tennis’ 2019 season reached its conclusion, culminating in a fourth place showing in Districts-just one spot shy of earning a collective berth in the State Tournament. GIRLS’ SOCCER A 5-1 trouncing over Red Lion in the first round of District playoffs last Tuesday left no doubt that the Lady Bucks are focused on the end goal. “The girls didn’t want the season to end,” head coach Keith Nagley stated simply. Cold, driving rain didn’t put a damper on the Buckskin night, and eighth seeded CV hosted the showdown, making quick work of

the nine seed. Ana Weiss notched the first of five successes after only two minutes on the field. Red Lion had the answer at nine minutes to relevel the scoreboard 1-1, but from then on out it was all Buckskins. Conestoga went on to score four unanswered goals, and despite the less than ideal weather, CV keeper Alyson Riggle held on to six saves. “They had to concentrate a little harder with the wet conditions,” acknowledged Nagley. Gabriella Barone Graybill and Madison Delgado each tucked in a first half goal, giving CV a 3-1 buffer headed into the latter 40 minutes.

One of two second half goals was netted by Lauren Weirich, and an own goal occurred when Delgado rocketed a corner kick off a Red Lion defender and it found its way over the goal line. Next up for the Bucks is top seed Cumberland Valley. The quarterfinal round will be reported in the next edition. FIELD HOCKEY Conestoga Valley’s field hockey squad is also on its way to the District quarterfinals, after slipping past Exeter, 1-0, in the opening round. Last Wednesday pitted seventh seeded CV against Exeter, the tenth seed, and the even match held no score until deep into the second half

PENNYSAVER mentality was number two seed Wilson. The Saturday, October 26th quarterfinal round will be recapped in next week’s edition. FOOTBALL CV football had faced a string of tough competitors heading into their final regular season clash at home against Elizabethtown on Friday, October 25. The previous week held a 30-6 disappointment on a trip to Warwick’s turf, in which the Buckskin’s

level of effort exceeded their point tally. “I was extremely pleased with the players’ effort, but we made too many fundamental mistakes to beat a good football team like Warwick,” acknowledged head coach Gerad Novak. The squad’s 2-3 league record had one final opportunity to be improved based on the outcome of their clash with Elizabethtown, but still won’t be enough to boost them into playoffs. Against Warwick, CV quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus found Zach Fisher for the TD pass, the Bucks lone trip to the end zone. “They have played hard, and never game up in any game,” credited Novak. As the season draws to a close, the team will graduate 11 seniors, who were honored during their

final home event. Brandon Camp, Zion Gadsden, Frank Haggerty, Edwin Hernandez, Leo Marente, Joshua Mathiot, Justin Norwood, Zachary Sornoza, Garrett Spangler, Bradley Stoltzfus, and Derek Ulishney represent the class of 2020, and their absence will be felt by the close squad. “I will miss the seniors and their dedication to the football program,” concluded Novak. BOYS’ SOCCER Round one of District playoffs marked the end of the road for the boys’ soccer crew, slipping behind Cumberland Valley, 2-0, last Tuesday. The Bucks wrap up the season with heads high, owning an 8-10 overall record and anticipating big things of next year’s team, expecting the vast majority of the team to return next season, losing only one graduating senior.

Defensively, it was another Eberly that kept CV’s hopes alive, with keeper Brooke Eberly snatching up five critical saves to preserve the shutout. “I am most proud that no matter what situation we are in, we never let down,” praised head coach Kelly Dearolf. “These girls are very competitive, and do a great job working together as a team.” The next test for that team

PENNYSAVER

12 - PENNYSAVER - Conestoga Valley Edition - October 30, 2019

A church so stuck in its ways that only news of the new pastor’s impending death can get its members to change - if that story sounds familiar, it is because it is. “This is the fourth time we’re doing it,” said Doreen Creighton, founder of Promise Players, a Christian theater group, and director of the group’s next production, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys.” “It’s our most requested play.” The story is also reminiscent of real-life churches that struggle with loyalty to tradition and a reluctance to change. “We love our church. Everything is wonderful,” quipped Tim Strawser, speaking as his character in the play. “The only thing that changes is the pas-

tors,” added actor Wayne Rhinier. The play addresses a number of themes, including prejudice, control issues, jumping to conclusions, and how to help others. “I’ve heard a pastor say he could do four sermons on the play alone,” said actor Ken Hess. Although there is a serious message in the play, it addresses problems in the church in a humorous way. “It’s a little over the top with some of the characters, but not too far,” Creighton commented. “It is just a funny play.” Promise Players presented “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” which was written by Andy and Jennifer Hansen, in 2001, 2004, and 2011. Many of the actors in the upcoming production also appeared in the previous productions. Reflecting on the contrasts between the 2001 and 2019 productions,

actress Julie Beittel remarked, “(My character) is really different. The first time, I played her as a caricature, but now she’s more real. I see ways that I’m like her.” “We were in our 30s or 40s then,” Strawser said of the first production. “Now, (the play) will speak a little louder because we are (the age of) the people who control the church.” Creighton suggested that along with age and maturity has come a deeper understanding of issues that arise in churches. “We’re human, and that’s where we need the grace of God,” she said. “Everyone has been through something in their life (and that may be) the reason why they act the way they do,” said actress Nancy Snyder. “We only see the tip of the iceberg.” Presenting the play and its valuable

helping others in the play, and we get to help (the clinic).” The play will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1; at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 9; at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays,

Nov. 3 and 10; and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8. Child care for preschoolers will be provided at all shows. Tickets may be reserved by visiting www.lampcob.com/promise-players or calling the church at 717-464-2050 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cross Plans Performance Elijah Cross will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 2. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will start at 7:30 p.m. Cross is a musician, comedian, and magician based in York. Originally from California, he is an alumnus of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where he began playing music and acting in stage productions. While still in high school, he began working as a professional magician, and shortly after graduating, he was booking music and comedy club gigs in New York. Cross settled in York in 2011, portraying Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Strand-Capitol (Appell Center) the same year. In 2013, he joined the Big Dogs of Comedy Tour, which performed at locations owned by Heritage Hills. In 2014, he appeared on FOX 43 performing his music. Cross released his debut album, “Here’s

the Skinny,” in 2016. In 2017, Cross combined his music, magic and comedy in “RISE,” a solo show at The Pullo Center, which raised $2,500 for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) York. In 2018, Elijah began giving random fans 10% to 20% of the payment he receives at gigs. He was a featured performer at the Cola Comedy Con in Columbia, S.C.; was invited by NBCUniversal to perform for its annual talent search; and was one of 32 comics from around the world selected for the 39th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition. Accessible Voting Machine Features Introduced VisionCorps clients experiencing low vision and blindness were introduced to new, accessible features of Lancaster County voting machines ahead of the upcoming election. During a recent support group meeting for individuals experiencing vision loss, Randall Wenger of the Lancaster County Board of Elections and Registration demonstrated new key features that are designed to improve the voting experience for individuals living with low vision or blindness. Lancaster is known as the first Pennsylvania county to use the most recent voting system, though it has been available in other areas of the country. The new system includes features like

changing colors (color, black and white, or inverted black and white), varying text sizes, Braille keys, and headphones. The system gives the user audio cues throughout the entire ballot navigation process and includes three wheels on the controller (move, select, or get help), each with Braille beneath it to help indicate what it does. Users will also be able to review an audible summary of the ballot at the end of the process. Poll workers will be trained on the new system to ensure voters receive the guidance they may need. Sample ballots will be available online prior to the election at www.co.lancaster.pa.us/elections.

message is a service to churchgoers, as it will hopefully inspire them to be thoughtful about their own congregations. “It means more to us,” Hess remarked. “I look at past shows as (just) a show and this one as a ministry.” Promise Players, a nonprofit theater group, is starting its 25th season. “I think God has really blessed it,” Creighton said. “I could tell so many stories of how God provided the actors we needed for each show.” Audiences have been generous in their support, as well. Since the beginning, the suggested donations for admission have been given to a charity related in some way to the respective productions, for a total of more than $224,000 in 24 years. For “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg was selected as the beneficiary as there is a child in the cast. “That’s one of the things I like about (Promise Players),” said actress Laura Scott-Wise. “We talk about

Meanwhile, we are also helping them with funds to restore the church.” The members of the United Methodist Women will run a food café and sell baked goods during the Art and Craft Market. “Their breakfast sandwiches are always a big favorite,” Mary commented. “They will have their homemade soups for sale too.” At various times throughout the event, attendees will be treated to live Christmas music performed by several of the pianists who are part of Lampeter UMC. Christians have been coming together at the Bowery Mission to offer hearty meals, hot showers, clean beds, warm clothes, and the help homeless individuals need to get off the streets and back on their feet. In the new book, Storbakken, a recent Bowery director, retraces that colorful history of the area and profiles some of the illustrious and infamous characters who have made the Bowery Mission an iconic New York institution. The book offers a lens through which to better understand the changing faces of homelessness, of American Christianity, and of New York City itself. The author will be signing books at the event.

Despite sweeping changes, it is still all too often the end of the road for troubled war veterans, drug addicts, the mentally ill, the formerly incarcerated, and others generally down on their luck.
