In “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” LMHS students speak language of theater

Second Veterans Expo planned

This is the second year that the Ephrata Lions Club has organized a Veterans Expo on Veterans Day weekend. For 2024, the club has partnered with the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of LancasterSanta Marie Assembly 915 to provide dinners for attendees.

“That’s a complimentary plated meal for veterans,” said Lions Club representative Steve Montpetit, who is helping to plan the event.

As with last year’s expo, more than 20 veteran artisans and veteran-owned businesses will be present along with a number of nonprofit organizations that support veterans. The Ephrata Lions Club Veterans Expo will be held in the ballroom at the American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Lions have lined up a variety of vendors to set up displays at the event. “We will have woodworking and a couple

Annunciation, projection and dialogue are all key components of the language of theater. It’s a language that helps performers deliver their message and connect with the audience.

The cast of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) is exploring the language of the theater and learning about communication in the process.

“I’m hoping they take some theater techniques away from this,” said Katelyn Coryell, the director of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” of her cast members. “I hope they grow as communicators, as effective collaborators and contributors to their community. I want them to understand the motivation

behind the critiques. They’re putting in significant amounts of time outside of our rehearsals just to understand the whys of the words they are saying. If the actors don’t understand the words they’re saying, the

audience isn’t going to get any of this.”

LMHS will present its interpretation of Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 7 to 9, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. at

CCOB’s birthday party is 300 years in the making

Over the past three centuries, Conestoga Church of the Brethren (CCOB) has affected scores of lives, touched innumerable hearts and bestowed countless blessings. But the church has also received its own fair share of blessings.

As CCOB prepares to celebrate its tercentenary, the milestone has provided some of its members an opportunity to reflect on how God has worked through the historic church for the good of the community.

The fall play is an estimated two and a half hours long including intermission.

“It’s a retelling of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet,’” said Coryell. “The takeaway is, ‘What impact are you leaving on the world?’ I think (the students are) definitely taking it to heart.”

“In my opinion, this play has been underappreciated,” Coryell continued. “I wanted to provide the students with an opportunity to dig into elevated language and the whys of words.”

According to Christy Burke, children’s ministry director with Grace Point Church, BLAST stands for Building Lives And Sharing Truth. BLAST - brought about by a partnership between Grace Point and The Factory Ministries - returned to The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, in mid-October, meeting each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The first session will last through Nov. 20.

BLAST is open to children in the Pequea Valley area age 3 through grade five. According to Cassady Foote, member of the BLAST leadership team, attendees are divided by grades, with all preschoolers meeting in the Braves Learning Center. “It’s a small group focus for kids to play games and build relationships,” explained Burke. “But we also dive deeper into Bible stories in a fun way.” Each session of BLAST - fall, winter, and spring - has a different theme. The fall program is focused on the parables of Jesus.

Each BLAST session begins with a large group time where a Bible story is introduced. Next, attendees move to a variety of stations, including a craft center, game time in the gym, and a snack. Preschoolers spend the whole time in the Braves Learning Center.

The final night of each session is reserved for family members to attend along with the children, and a meal is served for all attendees. “We set the gym up with stations that give (parents) a sneak peek at what we’ve been doing at BLAST,” explained Foote. “It’s all in the gym, and they go to different stations and there’s crafts and games.”

Burke said that the final BLAST of each session is always especially fun. “It’s not just the kids (participating) with parents standing there watching,” she explained. “On family night, all of the stations are done together by parents and kids.”

Foote said that the program moved from Grace Point to The Factory two years ago. Foote serves along with Burke, Liana Rogers, and Lauren Petersheim.

Karla Beiler, elementary programs director with The Factory, works with Grace Point to coordinate the program. All volunteers have the necessary clearances.

Beiler said she was happy to join forces with the church to offer area children a Wednesday night program at the facility. “I love the partnership with Grace Point and to be able to host an event that the community can feel safe coming to,” she noted. “It’s a Gospel-centered program, which I really love.”

According to Burke, children who wish to attend need not be connected to The Factory, Grace Point, or any area church, and there is no cost to take part. “Since we moved here, we have seen a

lot more people who don’t go to Grace Point or The Factory (attend),” said Foote.

Readers who would like to know more about BLAST or register their children may visit https://gracepoint paradise.com and click on “BLAST” under the “Ministries” tab.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies

Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

Giant and Martin’s phar-

macies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 18 and up without a prescription If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores.com/ pages/tgc-vaccines or www .martinsfoods.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines.

Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site.

In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.

The cast’s work on “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” began in late August, during the second week of school, with auditions. Since then, the student performers have been fine-tuning

their trade for two hours after school, four times a week.

“These kids are working so hard on this,” said Coryell. “This isn’t like any theater they’ve done before. During the performances, they definitely experience nerves. But nerves can be a good thing because you’re on your toes, aware and present. One of the joys of live theater is spontaneity.”

ON-SITE PUBLIC AUCTION

and God has been faithful to this congregation,” said Ruth Morgan, a member of CCOB’s 300th anniversary celebration committee.

“Those words are used often, but it’s accurate and true. God remains faithful to this congregation.”

“In the history of the United States, (300 years) is a long time,” she added. “But in God’s eye, it’s just a blink.”

“We are here to honor God,” said Phoebe Oellig, another member of CCOB’s 300th anniversary celebration committee.

“We are thankful for our heritage. It’s a heritage we can be proud of. We look forward to being a blessing to our community in the future.”

Located at 114 E. Main St., Leola, CCOB has a host of activities planned for the second weekend in November to commemorate the 300th anniversary of its founding on Nov. 17, 1724.

The festivities will be kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a family fun day. The event will feature food, games, a candy scramble, music, giveaways and fun.

At 7 p.m. that evening, speaker Jeff Bach, an author, Church of the Brethren minister and director emeritus of Elizabethtown College’s Young

Center, will address the gathering. Bach’s address will be followed by a dessert social.

Then on Sunday, Nov. 10, the anniversary will be reflected upon during a celebration service at 10:15 a.m., when former pastors and members will speak about their times at the church. A celebration lunch will be served after the service.

The events are free to attend and open to the public, but reservations for the celebratory meal are requested by calling 717-656-2493 or by searching for “Conestoga Church of the Brethren” on Facebook by Monday, Nov. 4.

“It’s almost like a homecoming,” said Oellig. “Some of those who worshiped here in the past are planning to come back. It’ll be a time to reminisce and connect with the past. In all that we do, we want to glorify God. I think God will give us a blessing that day.”

Over the two days of the celebration, several hundred people are expected to attend.

“This is not a fundraiser,” said Morgan. “That is not our intention. We are celebrating. This is a birthday party. It’s an anniversary celebration.”

CCOB, which was started through the collaboration of seven original members five years before Lancaster County was established, is recognized as the third-oldest Brethren congregation in the country and the oldest in the county. Today, CCOB’s pastor is Jere Cassel, and the church includes 75 active members.

“This is important from an historical perspective,” said Morgan. “Conestoga Church of the Brethren is a mother church to many other congregations. Some parts of the congregation divided and spread out to other parts of Lancaster County, Lebanon County and Berks County.”

“We are here to honor God, and we are here to serve the community,” said Oellig. “There’s a spiritual component and a practical component. Many of our members have served locally and internationally.”
