David Griffith, director of Conestoga Valley High School’s (CVHS) fall production of “King Lear,” is acutely aware of the learning experience he is offering students. “The challenges in the play (for the students) are playing characters that are a young new generation … taking on the mantle of leadership when people have been in power for decades,” said Griffith. “They are trying to find out how one can be a leader and what the ethical and moral requirements for good leadership are.” CVHS will present “King Lear” at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. Griffith noted that the show is an abridged version that will run less than two and a half hours. At Garden Spot High School (GSHS), teacher Lei Williams teaches English as a second language. Williams was born in Vietnam, and she has relatives there. In 2015, Williams first organized for a group of GSHS students to visit Vietnam. In the summer of 2019, she led a second group of students to the country. In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. The organization’s educational committee visits nearly 20 middle and high schools a year, giving as many as 30 living history presentations. “Sometimes we have lunch, and teachers join us,” said Douglas Kelly, president of the chapter. During lunch in May, Williams talked to the veterans and asked if anyone in the group would See Veterans pg 3

On a rainy Friday morning at the end of August, Mary Henning stood outside the home where she grew up more than 50 years ago on Old Philadelphia Pike in the Bridgeport area. “There was an

empty field here, and we had an extensive garden,” said Mary of the farm her parents bought in 1960. “My dad learned the electrical trade, but he never left the farm,” she added, recalling that she and her four siblings spent their summer days doing chores. See Studebaker pg 6

At age 29, after four successful years with the Baltimore Ravens and three with the St. Louis Rams, center Jason Brown walked away from football and into an entirely unrelated career. Some people, when they retire, become “gentleman farmers, with a few acres and a handful of cattle that they can manage with low stress and minimal effort. Jason and his wife, Tay, had a much bigger dream, and they bought a 1,000acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. The one problem? Neither Jason nor Tay had experience farming. Just as he did with football skills, Jason turned to YouTube to learn what he needed to run a farm. “I grew up with a little bit of a green thumb, did a little bit of landscaping with my father, as far as planting shrubs and trees and flowers here and there, but doing it on a large scale? No, this was totally brand new to me, Jason explained in an episode of “Growing a Greener World that was reposted at https://wisdomforlife.org/firstfruitsfarm. The Browns named their new property

First Fruits Farm and pledged to give the best of each harvest to people in need in the community. In 2014, its first year of operation, the farm produced more than 120,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and more than 10,000 pounds of cucumbers. Since then, the farm has produced nearly 1 million pounds of food, and all of it has been donated to food pantries and churches. “We know we are giving our best. We are giving from the heart, and that’s what it’s all about,â€? Jason said. “In my football career, I was living a life of entertaining. Now, it’s a life of service.â€? Jason will share his story at the Lancaster Chamber’s annual agriculture industry banquet, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. “He definitely has a message that aligns with what the Chamber wants: giving back to the community,â€? said Lancaster Chamber senior business programming manager Sandi Thompson. “He took a big risk ‌ but he felt it was his calling. We want people to follow their dreams.â€? The banquet will open with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The

plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. While Jason will be the guest speaker, a short program will include the recognition of this year’s century farm and the recipient of the George C. Delp Award, which honors a person or business that makes a significant contribution to the agriculture community and demonstrates an outstanding commitment to preserving or enhancing agriculture. Additionally, Lancaster Chamber president Tom Baldrige will speak, and Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Cheryl Cook is slated to address the attendees. Thompson noted that while the Lancaster Chamber no longer has a dedicated agriculture services department in order to serve all industries, it has continued to host the banquet because it honors the foundation of Lancaster County. “Celebrating agriculture is a big part of our community, Thompson said. “We want to continue to recognize that ag is part of a large economic drive in the community. People who want to be part of that celebration may purchase tickets to attend the banquet or sign up to be an event sponsor or table patron. Thompson requested that tickets be reserved by Friday, Nov. 8, but she

His eldest daughters, Regan, played by Madeleine King, and Gonerill, played by Beth Fasarakis, respond with flowery language of adoration, but Cordelia, played by Julia Yetman, refuses to be hypocritical and answers with honesty. Lear goes into a rage and banishes her. Cordelia leaves to marry the King of France, played by Sophia Steed. When the Earl of Kent, played by John Oeschslin, tries to show Lear he is mistaken, he is banished, as well. Fasarakis noted that she is the complete opposite of her evil character. “It is fun to order people around and be a diva,” she said. Booth stated that because of the depth of the characters and the changes they go through, many of the actors are playing a variety of types. “As time goes on, I start to lose my sanity, and I morph into some crazy guy wandering in the wilderness,” he said. Andrusky agreed. “I literally play five different people,” he mused. Chesnutt listed a number of songs from the World War II era that CBJO plans to perform with the Sweethearts. “We will do ‘Hold Tight’ with them, which is one of their favorites,” said Chesnutt, who noted that “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Bei Mir Bist Du Schön,” and “In the Mood” will also be on the playlist. “We will also play ‘Pennsylvania Polka,’” said Chesnutt. “That’s an audience favorite and a very fun piece.” In addition, after hearing the Sweethearts perform “America the Beautiful” without music, Chesnutt asked the group to perform it at the concert. “I heard the girls do it a capella, and it’s gorgeous when the three of them do it,” said Chesnutt. Olivia Daugherty, who performs regularly with CBJO, will be singing at the event, and Todd Harris, who also sings with the instrumentalists, will perform “The Way You Look Tonight.” Chesnutt said that CBJO members first started working with America’s Sweethearts in 2015, when the two groups appeared together at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Coatesville. “In 2017, we did a big Veterans Day concert with America’s Sweethearts with the big band at Willow Valley,” recalled Chesnutt, who said that the concert was fun for the band and well received by the audience. In 2018 , the groups played together at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. The Sweethearts seek to spread nostalgia and joy through their performances as they look back to the Andrews Sisters and the musical harmony they provided to the nation during a difficult time. One member of America’s Sweethearts has already inspired the members of CBJO. “We decided to make this (concert) a fundraising event for the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Chesnutt, who shared that Sweethearts member Annemarie Rosano held a fundraiser for the organization on her birthday. “One of our tenets is to provide concerts for veterans, but another way to support them is to do a fundraiser for veterans,” said Chesnutt. “America’s Sweethearts kind of pointed us toward Wounded Warrior Project as a worthwhile organization.” There is no admission fee to attend the concert. A freewill offering will be received. Net proceeds from the offering will be donated to Wounded Warrior Project. More information about CBJO may be found at www.corsairbluejazz.org. decide he would like to purchase the car, restore it, and take Mary’s parents, Martin and Elizabeth, who are both 92 and living in Lancaster area retirement communities, for a ride. Martin courted Elizabeth in the Studebaker. Martin was from Manor Township. Elizabeth lived in Blue Ball. Both graduated high school in 1945. Martin had a draft deferment because he worked on the farm, so he served stateside. Elizabeth attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, graduating in 1948. When Martin was a hospital patient, he met a few of Elizabeth’s friends who were nurses, and he attended Elizabeth’s graduation party as the date of one of them. In the fall of 1949, one of Elizabeth’s

classmates came from Sunbury to visit. The two took the bus from Blue Ball to Lancaster, where her friend picked up a ride home. Elizabeth went to the YWCA to keep busy until the bus arrived to take her home, but Martin saw her waiting and offered her a ride to Blue Ball. The pair married on April 15, 1950, and they had five children, including Suzanne Tunis and George Greider. Martin Jr. and Suzanne have died of cancer. Mary’s memories of the farm are plentiful. “We had rabbits, geese,” she recalled. “We always wanted a dog, but animals had to serve a functional purpose,” she added, noting that her father brought the children twin calves to raise. One of the

calves caused a bit of trouble. They called him Ferdinand. “One day he got loose, and I made a flying tackle and landed on him and sat on him until my siblings got there to help,” said Mary. Extracting the car from the second floor of the Greider barn was no easy task for Hegeman. Mary’s father had built a framework and shelves over the car. Hegeman and his crew spent six hours on Aug. 19 taking out the barn window and putting the car in position to remove it using the lift apparatus Hegeman rented. Hegeman, who remembers his parents having Studebakers when he was growing up, plans to restore the car and take it out for parades and shows.

“We children were thrilled to go back to school,” said Mary. “The other students would complain that they were bored over the summer, but we had worked shelling peas.” Mary’s attention on Aug. 23 was called to the second floor of the barn located just adjacent to the house. Using a type of lift, Pieter Hegeman, a local landscaper and lifelong friend of Mary’s brother, John, who died due to cancer, was working to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor. The car has been awaiting restoration since about 1965, when Mary’s father, Martin Greider, used a block and tackle, ramps, and the driving skills of his son, Martin Jr., to move the car to its lofty perch. Concerned about some limbs on an oak tree on the property, Mary had contacted Hegeman as she was preparing the place for auction on Sept. 28. The two were walking the property sharing memories of their childhoods when Tim DeGraves, who was also a friend of John’s, pulled into the driveway in a sports car. “I introduced him (to) Pieter, and they started talking about the car,” said Mary. DeGraves remembered the Studebaker on the second floor of the barn, and the trio made their way up the stairs to see it. The year 1948 was special to Hegeman because it was the year that his parents began their landscaping business in Holland. It did not take Hegeman long to

“Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program. “Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.”

Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the

Though the loss brought the season to a close, it in no way diminished the collection of achievements that the Lady Bucks earned along the way, including co-claiming the LL league Section One title alongside Penn Manor. Conestoga Valley’s season boasted 15 wins, tripling the amount of victories earned in their 2018 season, all while holding their regular season competition to a mere 10 goals-the least amount in all of the LL League. “It was great to watch this team grow this season,” reflected head coach Kelly Dearolf. “They made school history ending at the top of Section I, and won in the first round of league and district playoffs.” The successes were a team-wide Photo by Bob Devonshire CV quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus sets up to pass during the effort, and the seven individual players Buckskins’ season finale against E-town on October 25. were honored with all-star recognition by the league. The first team all-star list included four CV names, goalkeeper Brooke Eberly (90 saves), center back Bella Silvaggio, Carli Eberly (11 goals, 7 assists), and lead scorer Ellie Livingston (17 goals, 6 assists). Abigail Morley (13 goals, 2 assists) was named to the second team, and honorable mentions were given to left back Hannah Lally and mid back Lillian Buckwalter. GIRLS’ SOCCER The quarterfinal round of Districts, held Saturday, October 26, was also the end of the road for the Buckskin girls’ soccer squad, after battling it out with Cumberland Valley, but slipping in an overtime loss, 3-2. The Eagles came out hot, notching a Photo by Bob Devonshire goal almost immediately, but CV’s MadiAvery Tran returns a kickoff for the Buckskins during their 17-10 son Delgado hit her first of two at 12 loss to visiting E-town on October 25. minutes to level the scoreboard. Unfortunately, Cumberland retook the lead just three minutes later. Midway through the second half, Delgado found the netting again, forcing overtime, but the Eagles’ Caroline Shultz powered her second goal of the night, clinching the connotched points in the second. Etown, however, squeezed in one extra trip to the end zone to create the seven-point difference. Quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus ran in CV’s third quarter success, and Nathan Heck made good on the extra point as well as a fourth quarter field goal, but time expired before the Bucks could match the Bears 17 first half points. The loss marked the conclusion of the season, leaving the Bucks with a 2-4

“The girls as a whole ran very well,” praised Amway. For the boys, front-runner Emmanuel Gitonga captured the best time with 17:11.6 good enough for 64th place out of 300. Jesse Kanagy, a junior, placed 135th, saving his best race of the season for last, joining the ranks of those to complete the course in under 18 minutes, with a time of 17:51.6. “Jesse had his breakout race of the year,” noted Amway. Dante Velasco (18:38.7), Ethan Logue (18:47.2), Adam Harris (18:54.3), Micah Aldrich (18:57.8), and Tyler Slingluff (19:43.3), also represented CV at the season end event.

VOLLEYBALL CV’s first round District Three matchup pitted them against an undefeated Hempfield squad. The No. 2 seed Knights posted a 3-0 loss on the 15th seed Buckskins on October 26 and brought their playoff appearance to a halt. Despite the short trip into the playoff bracket, just making it there was an achievement in itself, punching their ticket to playoffs for the first time in eight years. “They have set a standard for the next group of players moving up,” summarized head coach Dewey Barlow of the squad who finished the year with a winning record of 10-9.

Gabriella Barone was also named to the first team all-star list while second team selections included CV’s Dana Wentz and Ana Weiss, and academic all-star honors went to Lauren Weirich. A team that has earned such success is fittingly led by a great leader, and head coach Keith Nagley was recognized for his outstanding contributions and named LL League Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has been distinguished with that honor. CROSS COUNTRY Kylynn Frankford’s pace-setting time of 20:17.3 led the girls cross country harriers at the District III Championship meet held at Big Spring High School in Newville on October 26. “Kylynn ran extremely well leading the girls’ team,” head coach Mark Amway said of the sophomore. Frankford took 54th out of the 237 total runners, and was joined in the top 100 by fellow sophomore Kayla Mongiovi who clocked a 21:08.9 to come in 96th. Church Sets Multicultural Ministry Day

Millport Conservancy To Host Fall Fest By Ann Mead Ash

To Andrea Rush, executive director for the North Museum of Nature and Science, partnering with Millport Conservancy to hold a Family Fun Fall Fest just made sense. “Why wouldn’t we do this?” asked Rush. “We are very attuned to our collective impact in the community. In working together, we achieve more for the Lancaster County residents we both serve.” With that goal in mind, the organizations’ inaugural Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millport Conservancy, 737 E. Millport Road, Lititz. The event will include a variety of games and other activities, including a mini reptile petting zoo and the Great Lititz Run Pumpkin Race, which will involve real pumpkins. Organizers have put their heads together to come up with fun activities that do not skimp on educational aspects. “We have incredible science- and nature-related activities planned for the full day,” said Rush. “(Attendees) may even find a real

The Great Lititz Pumpkin Race will give those who attend a chance to paint a pumpkin, which may then be enter it into a race to see how it fares down a portion of Lititz Run. Rush noted that the partnership between the North Museum and Millport Conservancy is a natural fit. “The North Museum of Nature and Science is an organization with limited access to nature,” explained Rush. “Millport Conservancy is an incredible natural asset to Lancaster County with limited infrastructure and without education staff or internal programming resources. We were brought together upon the suggestion of Millport board president Alan Caniglia, who also serves on our board as a (Franklin & Mar-

shall College) liaison,” said Rush. The fundraiser will benefit science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming at the North Museum, along with Millport Conservancy’s work to restore Lititz Run creek, which includes soil erosion control, wetlands restoration, and stream management. Millport Conservancy was established in 1988. The 85-acre property is teeming with native wildlife and plants. In 2008, Franklin & Marshall College partnered with the conservancy in a pairing that has allowed the college to use the area for both education and research. The North Museum, located at the corner of Buchanan and College avenues in Lancaster, is open year round. It features a variety of natural collections, an active glass-enclosed beehive, a state-ofthe-art planetarium, a live animal room, and a dinosaur gallery. Tickets to the Fall Fest may be purchased at www.northmuseum.org/events/fallfest/. Tickets, which are discounted for children, are tax deductible.

Magician Brett Myers recently announced that the Magic & Wonder Show formerly located at the Bird-in-Hand Stage will move to a new location for its fifth season in Lancaster County. The theater previously known as Rainbow Comedy Playhouse is being transformed into the Magic & Wonder Theater and will offer multiple shows a week from April through December. The magician explained that the new venue at 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, will allow for larger, more astonishing illusions. Additionally, his wife, Labrina, will be able to soar high in the air with her aerial act. While Magic & Wonder has no connection to the former Rainbow Comedy Playhouse, Myers announced that anyone who purchased a season pass for 2019 or 2020 at Rainbow Comedy Playhouse is invited to contact the new theater to receive a free 2020 season pass to the new 2020 Magic &

St. Thomas Episcopal Church member Frank Fryburg wanted to find a way to honor veterans on Veterans Day. Working with fellow church member Jeremiah Miller and organist and choir director Maria Thompson Corley, Fryburg is organizing “Of Thee I Sing, A Salute to America’s Veterans in Readings and Song.” The group effort will feature the church choir, individuals, and duets in military garb in a historical celebration that will begin with a focus on the Revolutionary War and move forward to a reading of a 2004 writing by 2nd Lt. Brian Humphreys, who served in the Iraq War. The free concert and reading event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster, According to Fryburg, the concert will open with the choir singing “Chester,” a popular song from the American Revolution, and a welcome by Jennifer Mattson, lead pastor of St. Thomas, who will offer a prayer for veterans. The congregation will be invited to join in on the national anthem and other songs. Readings from the history of the country that will be featured will include Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, which will be followed by “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” “America the Beautiful” will be sung with the congregation before Miller performs the George M. Cohan favorites “The Yankee Doodle Boy,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “Over There.” Fryburg will read the message Col. Charles E. Stanton gave upon arriving in France on July 4, 1917, during World War I. As the United States endeavored to return the favor France had done the fledgling nation during the Revolutionary War, Stanton noted that the friendship between the countries had not been forgotten and ended his statement with the words, “Lafayette, we are here.”

Level 1 open with owner Kriss Phelps. Naaquinos San Peppy+// is one of Crescendo’s lesson horses. WF Zeno Spirit+//, also owned and bred by Jean and James Popp, garnered three national Top 10s in dressage-Prix St. Georges and Intermediate 1 as well as western dressage Level 2. Crescendos Allegro+//, Czersk+//, Naaquinos San Peppy+// and WF Zeno Spirit+// have all received their Legion of Excellence awards, indicated by the +// after their names, for accumulated show points earned, which is the top award for performance horses in the Arabian Horse Association. Crescendo plans to return to Sport Horse Nationals in 2021 for another chance to compete against sport horses in the Arabian/Half-Arabian breed.

“We Saw the Sea,” written by Irving Berlin in 1936, which references the Navy, will be sung as a male duet. From World War II, the group will present “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B,” sung by Anne Kempsell, Kiana Corley, and Jennifer Mattson. “The White Cliffs of Dover” will be sung by Bradley Mattson. “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” will be performed as a duet by the Mattsons. Fryburg explained that in this version of the song, the man and woman sing back and forth to each other. “He will wear military attire, and she will wear casual clothes,” said Fryburg, who added that the skit will be set up with the pair sitting at writing desks so it looks like they are corresponding by letter. From the 1960s, a trio will sing Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Cruel War,” and from the 1990s, “From a Distance” will be sung as a solo by Kiana Corley. The concert will conclude with the entire choir and the congregation singing Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” which will include the introduction to the song. Fryburg said that he hopes area veterans will attend the event. “Veterans are the ones we are most anxious to see there to recognize and honor them,” he said. There is no admission fee to attend the concert, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit a fund that the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center has established to aid veterans in need. Pictured on front: St. Thomas Episcopal Church organist and choir director Maria Thompson Corley (right) will direct “Of Thee I Sing, A Salute to America’s Veterans” in Readings and Song at the church on Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. The concert is designed to honor veterans in word and song.

Speaker To Share History Program Tyler Gum, director of the Pennsylvania Military Museum and 28th Division Shrine in Boalsburg, will speak in the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata, on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. He will share about the role of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Division in the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne,

which sapped the German Army of its will to continue World War I. Twenty-six years later, the 28th Division rushed to Belgium to defend against the initial brunt of the great German counteroffensive known as the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. These two military engagements are considered to be significant turning points in world

history, and Pennsylvanians were there. This program is a joint offering of the Ephrata Public Library and the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley to commemorate the role of Pennsylvania’s veterans and their sacrifices and contributions to American history. The program is free and open to the public.

Concert, Open House from pg 15 as the Eicher Sisters House because what is now the front room was originally home to Maria and Anna Eicher, daughters of immigrant Daniel Eicher, in the 1730s. A plaque in the museum is a memorial to J. Gordon McQuate, one of the founding members of the museum. The Ephrata area resident, who died in 2009, collected Native American artifacts, was a member of the American Indian Archeological Institute and was a worker for the Council for American Indian Ministry. For the past 20 years, Jim DeFilippis, coordinator of the nonprofit Eicher Arts Center Inc., has been committed to the role of the museum in giving insights into the life

and culture of the Native Americans in the Eastern Woodlands in the years prior to the arrival of Europeans and during the early era of the European settlements. The museum’s focus is on that group of Native Americans, although items related to other Native Americans are included in its collection. DeFilippis has shown the collection to numerous local school and Scout groups as well as interested individuals and tour groups, including school groups from as far away as California. Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided. For more information, readers may may call the museum at 717738-3084.
