On Oct. 10, when the third session of the SEEDS free English as a second language (ESL) classes began meeting at Faith Church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, a few extra child care helpers were there to share their golf skills with the youngest attendees. “Tonight our Conestoga Valley High School golf team will help provide the childcare,” said Kristen Hershey prior to the event. Kristen is vice president with the nonprofit SEEDS, an organization formed
over the last several years to serve residents of the Conestoga Valley School District. Kristen’s husband, Brandon, who coaches the team, volunteered players to help out for the evening. “Brandon (and the team) will take the kids outside to play and introduce them to some golf skills as a fun way to keep busy,” said Kristen. SEEDS stands for selfless love, empowerment, equity, deliberate partnership, and stewardship. Minding the mills New book explores history of Lancaster County water wheels BY ANN MEAD ASH
Author Donald Kautz will sign copies of his recent book about Lancaster County mills.
It began with an interest in taking pictures. “I am an amateur photographer,” said Don Kautz, author of the recently published “Mills of Lancaster County.” “I started photographing gristmills in 2014 because I liked how they looked.” Kautz’s hobby has produced a book - his second, actually - titled “Mills of Lancaster County,” published by Maschof Press. Kautz will sign copies of the book and chat with interested buyers at the Groff Store House, located at 433 Newport Road,
Ronks, adjacent to the Mascot Roller Mill, on Friday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Kautz’s new book will point readers to locations in Lancaster County where mills once existed or can still be seen. “There are about 100 left, but they vary from complete ruins to private residences and everything in between,” said Kautz. “The first part of the book talks about all the existing mills and tells their stories,” he said, noting that if a covered bridge that was accompanied by a mill still stands, he has covered it in the book. “The second half of the See Mills pg 3

book is a catalog of all 300 some mills that have existed in the county with their information “Who was the owner and when did they close?” Kautz added that the second part of the book could be helpful to those doing genealogical research. According to Kautz, waterpowered milling peaked around the Civil War with methods such as steam and eventually diesel replacing water power. “In the 20th century, electricity became the power, but some of the water powered mills were used to generate electricity in the early years,” Kautz explained. Kautz pointed out that most mills closed in the early 20th century, with the Mascot mill being an exception. “The first mill at Mascot was built in 1738,” Kautz said, adding that the current building sports a stone dated 1767, but that the building was raised up to four stories in the 1830s. The mill closed in 1977. “That’s not typical. That’s a pretty long run,” said Kautz. Mascot was one of many area mills that also served as a post office. “You came there to get your mail, your flour, and to catch up on the local
news,” said Kautz. “Mills were a gathering place,” he added, noting that the placement of roads and communities was affected by the location of a mill. Kautz’s first book, “The Conestoga River: A History,” grew out of his interest in the Conestoga Navigation Company, which opened the river up to navigation from Lancaster to Safe Harbor. “I was giving some talks about that and someone suggested I write a book,” recalled Kautz, who noted that the river, which has its origins in Berks County travels into Caernarvon Township, through Bridgeport, and eventually to Manor Township, entering the Susquehanna River at Safe Harbor. CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Epiphany Homeschool Theatre Academy, a new theater program for homeschool students in central Pennsylvania, will present “Radium Girls” as its debut production at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Show dates and times are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 9 and 10, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. “Radium Girls,” written by D.W. Gregory, is based on the true story of female laborers who were poisoned and killed by their factory’s radiumbased paint from 1918 to the 1940s. “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of the workers as they fought for their day in court. The play’s themes include the pursuit of both health and wealth, the power of the underdog and the injustices that laborers in America have faced. Cast members include middle-schoolers and high-school students who first learned of the play when it was performed at Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School. “Our kids wanted to tackle something with substance,” said Tammy Bartlett, one of the founding members of Epiphany Homeschool Theatre Academy, when explaining how the play was chosen. “One of the girls had a friend who was in ‘Radium’ at L-S, and she thought the show was great. I spoke to the kids, and they were very excited. They wanted something that would be challenging and have a powerful message. Many of these kids are ‘actor’s actors,’ and they wanted to delve into character and emotion.” Bartlett noted that the venue is not a traditional stage but a black box theater, which is a more intimate performing space. “That is a very unique experience for

The West Earl Township Board of Supervisors invites the public to a special meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. at the West Earl Township Municipal Building, 157 W. Metzler Road, Brownstown. This date reflects a change to the originally scheduled event. At the meeting, members of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC) will recognize the West Earl Township Police Department for receiving accreditation. Light refreshments will be served afterward. In July, a team of assessors from PLEAC spent two days conducting an on-site assessment of the agency to ensure its compliance with PLEAC standards and best practices in law
enforcement. The assessment team evaluated every aspect of the police department, including its policies, procedures, training, facilities and equipment. The assessors also conducted ride-alongs with West Earl police officers. After the assessment, the PLEAC team recommended that the West Earl Township Police Department be recognized as an accredited law enforcement agency. On Oct. 26, the West Earl Township Police Department was awarded a Certificate of Law Enforcement Accreditation after a unanimous vote by PLEAC at a ceremony held in Harrisburg. The department is now one of the 174 agencies in Pennsylvania accredited by PLEAC.
