Maker’s Market planned in Leola Fundraiser will help fight hunger BY ANN MEAD ASH

the annual Leola United Methodist Church Maker’s Market, who noted that the name was changed to recognize the work of the many creative vendors who take part. This year’s event will be held at the church, 7 W. Main St., Leola, on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. Geltz expects to have a number of vendors selling a variety of items, and there will be lunch items and baked goods for sale. Among the many handmade and creative items organizers hope to have on display will be jewelry (such as clay earrings and bracelets), dish scrubbies and washcloths, crocheted towels, dog and cat treats, ornaments, magnets, blankets, scarves, etched nightlights, homemade cards, seashell art, watercolor and acrylic paintings, button art, needle felting pictures, coasters, and fluid art. Candy and plants will also be sold.

Leola United Methodist Church will hold its annual Maker’s Market, which will include craft items for sale, along with food and a craft for children.

Food items that will be offered for purchase will include sub sandwiches and a variety of baked goods. Last year, market organizers offered a free make-and-take craft activity. The little owl the children made proved so popular, this year youngsters will have an opportunity to make a similar item. “They will

not end without creating a global movement,” Geltz quoted from the organization’s literature. “We are hoping to raise enough to pack bags next fall,” she added. Readers who would like more information may visit www.leola umc.com, email leolaumc@gmail.com, or call 717-656-7600.

What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Before making holiday shopping lists, visit local stores and base gift ideas on items they have in stock. Chances are those gifts will be one-of-a-kind. Gifts purchased from local stores are also likely to feature a local flair, as independent

When opportunity knocks, members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church are not afraid to answer. Years ago, the church held an annual holiday bazaar, and it seemed appropriate to bring back the tradition in the fall of 2023. At the same time, longtime parish member Bunny Ford decided to liquidate her clothing business,

craft items will be on display, including woodworking, handpainted glass ornaments, jewelry, ceramics, custom florals, stained glass, soy candles, incense, soaps, and wreaths. Artwork will include painted canvases and jewelry and canvases made with paint pouring. Sewn items will include scrubbies, tea towels, pillows, small quilts, table runners, and placemats. One vendor creates a variety of items, from purses to potholders and dog neckerchiefs, from repurposed military wear. Fudge and baked goods will also be sold. A few items have been reserved for giveaways, including an 82-by-90-inch two-sided quilt in a range of blues made by a parishioner. When Ford decided to liquidate her inventory, she wanted to make a donation to the church. A group of women including Fran Cannon and Kathy Baker offered to work with Ford on the project. They visited her location and were overwhelmed. “It was pretty awesome,” said Cannon of the number of pieces available. “We took more than 350 pieces,” she said, adding that most of the items are tops, sweaters, and jackets and some anorak jackets.” Cannon noted that the clothing mostly appeals to the mature woman but is available in a variety of sizes and multiple colors. The selection consists of all brand-new items, but prices will be discounted from the amount on the tag. Baker noted that a changing area will be available for women who would like to try on pieces. All funds raised by the sales will be used for capital improvements at the church. Food items that will be available for purchase at the event will include chicken corn soup sold by the bowl and the quart, hot dogs, chips, soda, coffee, and cookies. Kernc noted that vendor space may still be available. Those interested in renting a space may call 717-371-2142. More information about the event may be found at www.ourladyoflourdesnh.com.

businesses tend to offer products and services that are reflective of the customers and the community they serve. Sam Ebersole of Weaver’s Store in Leola, which specializes in hardware and related items, noted that local stores have good prices, convenience, and less traffic on the route there and back home. “You get service from people you know and who know the products they sell,” said Ebersole, who added that if a customer is not happy with a purchase at a local store, the return process is simple. “Just bring it in, and we will take care of it,” said Ebersole, who noted customer service is a priority. “Come right back here, and talk to us,” he added. be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 2 and 9; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 3 and 10. “The Sound of Music” follows a young postulant named Maria, played by Haleigh Swansen, who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, played by Sean Caldwell, and brings music and joy to the household. As the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the von Trapp family face a moral decision. The cast also features Monica DePaul as the Mother Abbess, Brooklyn Hilton as Liesl, Lincoln Everett as Rolf, Marcus Hartline as Max Detweiler, and Ahna Fulmer as Elsa Schraeder. Jaime was thrilled to be given the opportunity to direct the childhood favorite. “I was very excited to sign on,” she said, noting that she recalls first seeing it as a young child and that it was one of the first shows in which she acted around the age of 10. “It’s such a sweet story. It has always been a warm memory for me,” Jaime said. The musical, however, is not without its challenges. “We have a lot of kids (in the cast),” noted Jaime, who has double cast six of the seven von Trapp children. “They are fantastic,” she noted of the child actors. She also pointed out that creating a realistic set is not easy. “We want to be in the Alps and we’re not,” she stated. “Translating that onto a stage that feels true and honoring to the story without being cheesy is a challenge.” As rehearsals move forward, Jaime said that cast members are sharing their own memories of experience with the musical. “Even the kids are familiar with the story and have enjoyed digging in deeper and getting to know the characters better,” she said, noting that the story has universal themes that make it feel familiar to both cast and audience members. “We are having so much fun finding moments of humor and warmth,” she said, noting that the actors in the small ensemble are exploring the connections between characters. “(We are) finding that in the relationships … and trying to understand the joy and the humor,” she said. Of course, “The Sound of Music” is known for its music by Richard Rodgers combined with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Jaime cannot wait to

share “The Lonely Goatherd” with audiences. “It is really delightful,” she said, adding, “‘Climb Every Mountain’ is a showstopper,” and that the dancers in “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” are very gifted. “(The music) is almost subtle in its charm,” she noted. PackHOPE event to fight hunger Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, will host the fifth annual PackHOPE event on Saturday, Dec. 2. Two sessions will be offered: from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Attendees should arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to the start time of

their session for training in the main auditorium. Community members may attend with a group or individually to pack meals. The meals of rice and beans will be delivered to people in need in some of the hardestto-reach places. In addition to meeting a physical need, those

delivering the meals will share the Gospel with recipients. Volunteers have packed 100,000 meals in each of PackHOPE’s first four years, so the event is projected to reach a half a million meals this year. The cost to pack 100,000 meals is $33,333. Donations toward the effort may be made at

https://mywc.ccbchurch.com/ give_detail.php. To sign up to pack meals, visit https://mywc.ccbchurch .com/goto/forms/2060/ responses/new. For more details, email Lisa Weaver at lisaw@worship center.org.
