Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish/food item to share, along with a serving utensil. Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could

squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. “Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge See Ease The Burden pg 12

Local Author Wins National Award By Ann Mead Ash
Joel Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness” is the recipient of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge award known as the George Washington Honor Medal. Moore was notified of the award in a letter from the Freedoms Foundation dated Sept. 12. “Journey Into Darkness” tells the story of a few of the more than 200,000 boys and youths who took part in the battles of the Civil War. Moore began the work in 1960 when he was still in high school. The writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed, and as the years passed, the author attended college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a See Local Author pg 9

Pictured on front: Daniel McCaughn (left) and Carlos Cordero (right) will teach English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at The Factory Ministries in Paradise beginning at the end of January. The pair are seeking volunteers to help neighbors to learn English.

PUBLISHED WEDNESDAYS
A year ago, Pequea Valley High School senior Carlos Cordero and some of his fellow Advanced Placement students were asked to help a new student from Guatemala to translate from Spanish to English. Cordero and the student worked on grammar, formal and informal speech, and subject-verb agreement. “Now he is doing great,” said Cordero. This year, when several more new students needed help with English as a Second Language (ESL), Cordero began to wonder how their parents could support them academically as they learned English. Cordero’s father, Daniel McCaughn, has experience helping those who do not speak English with applications for citizenship. Cordero came to him with a question. Cordero recalled, “I said, ‘When we have all these students who don’t speak English, how can their parents help them learn English or anything (else they need to study)?’” McCaughn did a little research and discovered ESL programs in Lancaster city and in West Chester. “What about that 40minute stretch of Route 30 (and what if) people can’t go to either of those places?” asked McCaughn. “How will people assimilate if no one will help them?” Cordero, who is preparing to attend college out of the area after graduating, wanted to do a type of senior project before he left. Working together with Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory Ministries, he and McCaughn have created “The Moses Project” with the tagline, “For we were once all strangers in a strange land,” a reference to Exodus 2:22. A volunteer meeting will be held in early January, and free two-hour classes for adults who want to learn English are scheduled to begin at the end of January, probably on Thursday evenings. Father and son are working to create the course. “We are buying books and lesson plans,” said McCaughn, who added that The Factory Pantry will be used to help teach adult students about grocery shopping. “We will train and educate people how to shop smart in a supermarket,” said McCaughn.
Volunteers will play a critical role by providing listening ears during small group sessions that follow the group lesson. “It won’t just be book learning,” explained McCaughn. “It’s a practical application of conversational English.” Volunteers need not be teachers. “We want people who just want to come help their neighbors learn to speak English,” said McCaughn. Zimmerman believes this is the first time this service will be available in the community for adults. “We are calling those folks out who want (to volunteer) to be part of these (adults’) journey and education (in ESL),” Zimmerman said. Both McCaughn and Cordero have experience living in places where the native language was not their first language. “I was in the Air Force for 20 years, and I lived all over the world,” said McCaughn. Cordero’s mother, who is from Peru, spoke Spanish to him as a child, and he needed an ESL program to learn English when he entered school. McCaughn said that he understands how hard it is to fit in when you cannot understand your neighbors. “It is so much easier to assimilate to a culture if you can speak the language,” he said. “Even if you speak it poorly, people will respect the effort.” McCaughn learned a number of languages living around the globe. “It was amazing how much I could become a part of my community (once I learned the language),” he said. McCaughn hopes that local residents will volunteer to help for the good of all who live in the Pequea Valley area. “This is a community-based program, started by community members to help our neighbors,” he said. “This is (an) opportunity to be a part of helping your neighbors to live a better and easier life.” Those who would like to volunteer or learn more about the program may call 717-687-9594 or email shira@thefactory ministries.com.

Safety Vest Frolic Slated Residents of the local community are invited to join Fairmount residents on Friday, Dec. 13, at 9:30 a.m. for a Safety Vest Frolic in the Crest View Gathering Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of the Fairmount campus.
Kay L. Moyer, a safety nurse educator from the Cooperative Extension Service, will supply the materials to make vests and assemble kits to donate to local schoolchildren who walk or bike on back roads. Those would like to help cut pieces of fab-
ric fastener or reflective tape for the vests or assemble the cut pieces into kits are invited to attend. Anyone not able to attend the frolic but interested in helping in their own home may call 717-394-6851. Due to increased
demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are needed also to purchase additional materials for more vests. Parents or teachers of young students who may need vests are welcome to call the aforementioned number. Directions to Fairmount are available at www.FairmountHomes.org.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions
T
people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to
be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of
their loved ones this holiday season. Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases. Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts.
Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses. Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their
convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints.
Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience
Responses
Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53

Wrapping Gifts Is An Old Tradition
T
he holiday season is rife with tradition. One of the most recognizable traditions involves wrapping gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old, with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668. The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts. As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its
origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman founded the first gift wrap company in the United States in 1903. Unfortunately for gift givers back then, adhesive tape had not yet been invented, and wouldn’t be for another 27 years.

Personalization
Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more unique products, including customized items.

Improved customer service
Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.
percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can

The Origin of Stockings Rooted in Legend

ome holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many celebrants. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls.
and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters’ ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes, St. Nicholas was wandering through the man’s town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which
were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.
According to Smithsonian. com, this father was struggling to make ends meet

“(Sanborn) thought it looked interesting,” said Moore, who in February of 1989 received a letter from Sanborn saying he had nominated Moore for the award. Moore kept a copy of the letter, but he never heard any more about the award. In 2017, Moore tried to contact Sanborn, wanting to show him the published work. He spoke with a representative of the Freedoms Foundation named Kevin Ferris. Ferris was unable to connect Moore with Sanborn, but he did

teaching career. By 1989, Moore had completed much of the manuscript, but the first book in the series was not published until 2011. Asked how he came to receive the award, Moore leaned back and said, “That is an interesting story.” The story actually began in the 1980s, when Moore offered some photographs to Paul Sanborn, who was then a historian with the Freedoms Foundation. At the same time, he showed Sanborn the manuscript for “Journey Into Darkness.”

give Moore information on how to submit an application for consideration for the award. On Dec. 17, 2018, Moore submitted his work in the public communications category of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards program. The entry included a one-page summary and several supporting documents, which could be letters of commendation, photographs, news clippings, or a supporting video. Included with Moore’s submission was a note of commendation from Lloyd Alexander, author of “The Black Cauldron.” “(Alexander) lived in the area where I was teaching when I taught at The Episcopal Academy’s Devon campus,” explained Moore, who visited Alexander with his students. Moore also shared his work with Alexander, who in December of 1989 sent Moore a letter noting how much he enjoyed the class visits and adding, “Best yet is your gift of the ‘Journey Into Darkness’ volumes. ... Now that I see the books all together, I … am enormously impressed.” Moore also included a letter from Jim Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust. Moore had originally contacted the trust concerning a historic site called Stones River National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Up From Corinth,” one of the books in the “Journey Into Darkness” series, describes the extremely difficult battle that began in that area on New Year’s Eve of 1862 in the pouring rain. “I sent him the excerpt (describing the battle),” said Moore. “(Lighthizer) wrote back that one of the key components of the Civil War Trust’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of battlefields in our nation’s history. “He said, ‘Your thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written series supplements this mission very well.’” Each June, Moore takes part in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. A young man named Paul Wunderlich works with him portraying 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem to tell visitors the story of one of the boys of the war. The Freedoms Foundation National Awards have recognized responsible citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal since 1949, honoring more than 50,000 citizens. Moore will receive the medal at an awards ceremony scheduled to be conducted at the Valley Forge Volunteer Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation in February 2020.

that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit, the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly.
ETB founders were inspired by occurrences at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Birdin-Hand, where High and Herr attend. The first involved a young couple. When the husband died of cancer, the wife was left with significant medical bills and funeral expenses. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country
because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The emphasis is on grassroots … local,” said Herr. “Any donations to Ease the Burden stay here in Lancaster County.” Lapp added that the trio will be
working to raise funds. “There are lots of ways to fill the grain bin,” she said. “It’s about relationships, but we hope to hold events, and we hope individuals will see the need and feel led to give,” she said, adding that ETB is already working with small businesses. ETB has a website that offers information about the mission and how the organization works, and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.ETBLancaster.org.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR QUALITY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION?
Did Yeshua (Jesus) lie?
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 16:25). “He who conceals his sins does not prosper; but whoever confessses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of His hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name and the name of His Son? Tell me if you know!” (Proverbs 30:4). “Seek the L-rd while He may be found; call on Him while He is near” (Isaiah 55:6). Now immediately without hesitation, ask The Almighty One if Yeshua is His Son and ask Him to reveal His Son to you. Yeshua said that He was The Almighty One’s Son and that He and His Father are one (John 5:17-18, 10:30 & 38 & 17:1). He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Also, “He that does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (John 5:23). Also, “The Father judges no man but has entrusted all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22). “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned; but whoever does not believe is condemend already, because he does not believe in the name of the Son of The Almighty One” (John 3:18).

You must decide this for yourself. There can be no middle ground, either He lied or He told the truth. If you think He was an outright liar there is no reason to read any further. You might as well put the paper down and hope that you are 100% correct. If you aren’t you are doomed. If on the other hand, you believe that Yeshua did not lie, the following is for you.

Loan Program from pg 1 “Along with federal student aid, that gets them a little bit closer (to covering school costs),” said LDHL board president Samantha Eck. Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Specialized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). “It’s a pilot, (so) I’m sure we will learn things doing it,” Eck said. “Our goal will be to open (the program) to any (school), but we have to start with baby steps.” The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007. Klein had distributed funds to several organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time
has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Universal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. While business principles can be learned in a traditional four-year college, trades like auto repair are typically leaned at a different kind of school, and LDHL wanted to support those efforts. “This is a need that our community has,” Eck remarked, adding that while public perception may be that attending trade, occupational, and technical programs is relatively low cost, the reality is
that tuition may run as high as $20,000. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan program, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in time for new sessions at the LCCTC. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan. Borrowers will also need co-signers for the loans, and repayment will begin six months after the recipient graduates or leaves school. Individuals who are interested in learning more and applying can do so at https://lancdollars.org/ tote-loan. Those with questions about the new program may call the LDHL office at 717-397-7920 or email info@lancdollars.org.

Since then, he has become a nationally celebrated vocalist and is best known as the tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band. For more than two decades he has specialized in contemporary Christian music and performed around the world, including at the White House, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. The “It Music Be Christmas” event, presented by Garden Spot Promotions and IMC Concerts, is one of a dozen concerts Phelps and his musical entourage will perform throughout the holiday season. Many of the songs featured during the evening are part of Phelps’ “It Must Be Christmas” recording, which was released last fall. The evening will also include renditions of classics like “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” and “Sleigh Bells,” along with Phelps’ new classics like “Fall On Your Knees,” “Christmas Rush,” and “Anthem of the Lord.” Information about the tour may be obtained by visiting www.itickets.com or www.davidphelps.com. Ticket information is available by calling 864-237-3214. Group ticket information is available by calling 877-392-9710.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) invites community members to donate to the Play It Forward program. Donations will go toward purchasing musical equipment and accessories requested by music teachers in the School District of Lancaster on behalf of students in need. In 2018, the Play It Forward program helped hundreds of students in need. LSO’s goal for 2019 is to once again provide all the items on the wish lists of all students who need materials to boost their music education. Gift baskets will be delivered to teachers before the Christmas holiday. LSO’s Sound Discovery Program has been providing musical instruments to children in
need in the School District of Lancaster for more than 10 years, but those instruments require accessories and maintenance that not all students and their families can afford. When LSO discovered that teachers were using their own personal funds to purchase supplies for struggling students, it created the Play It Forward program. Since 2015, the LSO has been asking music teachers in the School District of Lancaster to submit wish lists of needed items like reeds, strings, valve oil, and cork grease on behalf of their students. Through the support of donors and sponsors, LSO purchases items on the lists and delivers holiday gift baskets to music teachers.
Members of the community can support the program by donating any amount. Donations may be made by visiting www. lancastersymphony.org; by calling 717-2916440, ext. 303; or by visiting the LSO office, 48 N. Christian St., Suite 200, Lancaster. Directions for sending contributions by mail are available at the aforementioned website. Members of the community may also visit Menchey Music, 1555 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, to purchase specific music accessory items from wish lists of music teachers in the School District of Lancaster. In order to be used for the 2019 gift baskets, donations need to be made by Monday, Dec. 16.
CHRISTMAS FRUIT & SEAFOOD SALE December 21st & 23rd & 24th, 2019
This Jewish Man Antiochus Epiphanies was a descendant of a general in the army of Alexander the Great. He was the ruler of Syria in 164 BC. He tried to conquer Egypt, but Pharaoh sent him packing his bags for home. He was furious and tried to take his wrath out on Israel. He not only ordered a pig to be sacrificed on the altar in the Temple, but he also ordered local Levites to sacrifice pigs in their own town. In the town of Modin a Levite named Matthias refused to sacrifice a pig. He and his sons killed the Syrian captain and his soldiers. This started Israel’s successful three year rebellion against Syria. Israel was successful in their rebellion and the profaned Altar in the Temple was taken down and a new one was erected. There was only enough consecrated oil in the Temple to burn for one day. The Lord made that small amount of oil last for eight days, until the new consecrated oil was ready. It was decided that the victory and the miracle of the oil would be celebrated every year, as a testimony to the saving grace of our eternal Master and King. Jewish families light their Candelabra with the addition of one more candle each day until eight candles are lit. The candles are always lit with one special candle called the servant candle (Shamash). One hundred and sixty four years later, the most famous Jewish man that ever lived, stood in the Temple courts at the Feast of Dedication called Hanukkah. The people asked Him to tell them plainly, if He was the Messiah. He said “He and His Father are One” (John 10:30). He was the Prophet that Moses spoke about in Deutueronomy. 18:15ff. He said that “He is the light of the world” (John 8:12). “He brought light into the world but men loved darkness” (John 3:19). “He made the world but the world knows Him not” (John 1:10). “He laid his life down freely, no one could take it from Him” (John 10:18). His life was sacrificed for the benefit of all who would come to Him as Savior and Messiah. This was done according to “the set purpose and foreknowledge of His Heavenly Father” (Acts 2:23). He had to die, for The Scripture says “It is the blood that makes atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11). Messiah wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). He says to all who will listen “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28). “Arise, shine for thy light is come (Isaiah 60:1)” “Messiah is the light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel”. (Luke 2:32). Messiah said, “I am the root and the offspring of David. The bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16). Yeshua (Jesus the Messiah) is the only one who can save you from eternal damnation. Come unto Him so that you may have eternal life with Him and His Father, in their everlasting Kingdom. It does not matter whether you are Jewish or Gentile. He says to you PERSONALLY “Come to me and I will give you Eternal life with me”.
