HOLIDAY MEAL
St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 929 N. Duke St., Lancaster, will sponsor its 28th annual Christmas Day dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 25, for those who will spend Christmas alone or for those unable to afford a meal. Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Transportation is available in the Lancaster city area by calling St. Anne Church at 717-392-2225 or Lisa Wood at 717-669-6282 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and leaving a message by Saturday, Dec. 22. The dining area is not wheelchair-accessible.
“You show up with a friend or come alone and make a friend,” said Kathi Markley, a member of the Lancaster Road Runners Club. Markley was referencing the annual free Christmas Eve Run the club has held for about two decades. Markley wants those considering taking part to know that they will have company along the route no matter what their pace. “There are faster people (and) middle-of-the-pack runners and people who meander slowly,” she said. “You don’t have to feel like you have to be an Olympic-caliber athlete (to take part).” Markley and other club members have planned this year’s run to begin with runners meeting near the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company, 33-35 N. Market St., Lancaster, adjacent to Central Market, at 8:45 a.m. on
Monday, Dec. 24. The run will begin at 9 a.m. Runners need not be club members to join in the event. According to Markley, the run follows a course that is a modified version of the Red Rose Run. “(The Red Rose Run) normally starts in Binns Park area,” explained Markley, “but this starts near Central Market and loops through Lancaster County Park.” She noted that the course, which runs downhill on Duke Street, is about 4 miles in length. “There is a flat section through County Park, and if you’re running with a friend and chatting it goes by quickly,” she said. “Coming back there’s a change of climb.” Markley added that there is a group of members who often walk the course. Following the run, participants generally take some time to mingle by browsing through Central Market and See Road Runners pg 7

A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,” she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. When Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) sophomore Holly Butler applied to take part in the New York City-based Camp Broadway performance in the 87th annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, she thought being chosen would be a longshot at best. “I genuinely didn’t think I was going to get in,” said Holly. On Nov. 19, just a few days before flying to California with her parents, the reality still had not sunk in. “It’s not processing that I will be in Hollywood and on television,” said Holly, sitting at the piano in her music room. Holly was one of 63 young people, ages 12 to 17, who took part in the parade, which was held on Nov. 25. The event will be televised on The Hallmark See Local Girl pg 7
Members and friends of the Lancaster Road Runners Club will gather once again on the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company for a special free Christmas Eve Run, with participants meeting at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 24. Interested area residents are welcome to take part in the 4-mile jaunt.

Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New York City. helped her enter into creativity. Other students shared about how they had a greater sense of respect and appreciation for people around them as a result of disconnecting from their smartphones. A common observation among the students and staff members who took on the challenge was that they had more time due to not using their smartphones or social media accounts. The goal was not just to disconnect from technology, but to also use the time as an opportunity for students to reconnect with their communities. Focusing on how disconnection from others can eventually lead to dehumanization, the Derksens addressed human rights crises in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Syria. As the 550 students exited the auditorium after the last session, teachers stood at the doorways with bowls of chocolate truffles. Each student was handed a truffle and sent off with the statement “You are a gift.” Lancaster Mennonite School holds chapel services four times per week at its Lancaster Campus.

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) students were recently challenged to go 48 hours without using their smartphones or social media accounts. Jimm and Kaylene Derksen, chapel speakers for LMS’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, focused on the theme “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Beautiful” over four different sessions. They highlighted the kinds of disconnection from God and other people that one can experience, sometimes resulting from smartphone addiction. The Derksens are both certified soul care providers and also staff members at Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Jimm is a personnel placement coach and Kaylene is the development director. One of EMM’s three core values is well-being. EMM seeks to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of its workers and those whom they serve around the world, as well as stakeholders. Lancaster Mennonite School students are among those whose well-being EMM seeks to enhance. Students were encouraged to fill their smartphone voids by journaling about what they noticed. One student observed a woman sitting on a bench next to her making a scarf. The student was inspired to make a scarf as a result of stopping to notice the woman next to her. GCCWS Will Host “A Great Celebration” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The theme for Christmas at Grace Community Church of Willow Street (GCCWS) this year is “A Great Celebration.” “During a staff meeting, (lead pastor) Mike (Sigman) said, ‘We’re going to have a great celebration. Bring me your ideas,’ so we’re going to do as many things as we can,” explained worship coordinator Alyssa Mayersky. Because Christmas will be observed on a Tuesday this year, GCCWS, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will hold seven services over the course of three days. They will all be livestreamed at www.gccws.net. Identical Christmas-focused worship services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. All four services will conclude with the singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight. Sunday school for children from nursery age through fifth grade will be offered at 9:15 and 11 a.m. Identical family celebrations will be held at 2 and 4 p.m. on
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
Monday, Dec. 24. The services are expected to run for an hour and will include congregational singing, a short children’s message, the distribution of a gift to each child, and the performance of a fully produced musical. “The Mystery of the Manger: It’s the Gospel Truth” was created by Celeste Clydesdale and arranged by David T. Clydesdale. It is directed by Katie Wieand and involves approximately 50 children. The musical will relate the tale of an investigative reporter who attends a dress rehearsal for a Christmas production on the search for the true story of Christmas. “The goal is for the children to be ministers. They’ll lead the worship,” said children’s ministry director Patty Deiter. “It’s a great opportunity for them and a blessing to the congregation.” GCCWS will also hold a Christmas celebration at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 in the Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The school was the temporary meeting space for GCCWS for 13 weeks this summer while the church had its parking lot enlarged and an addition put on the building. GCCWS has elected to keep its sanctuary of modest size to provide a small church feel, but church leaders would like to host one Christmas service where most of the church

During the music-heavy event, Sigman is slated to preach an evangelistic sermon about Mary’s response to the announcement of Jesus’ impending birth. “It’s definitely a big undertaking,” worship pastor David Julian commented. “Every single piece has a different arrangement of instruments. We intentionally textured it that way.” Julian noted that the music will cover a range of styles, including bluegrass and rock. There will be an a capella choir, strings, and a horn section, as well as spoken word performances.

Markley said that the number of runners depends on the weather. “We have had as many as 40 or as few as 10, she noted. Readers who would like more information may visit www.lrrclub.org and click on “LRRClub Christmas Eve Run on Dec. 24. In addition to the free Christmas Eve Run, Markley noted that the club holds free Tuesday night fun runs in Long’s Park and Sunday morning trail runs at Lancaster County Park. “These are free and open to everyone, she stated, adding that often the

The Tinseltown tradition is presented and produced by Associated Television International. The Butlers were seated on bleachers in front of Hollywood landmark Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to watch their daughter perform. The young woman’s adventure to Hollywood began several months ago when she applied to take part in a summer camp in New England. “I saw an ad on Instagram for the Boston Conservatory, and I thought it would be amazing to attend because they are one of the largest schools for vocal training for theater, said Holly, who did some research and auditioned to take
part. Not expecting to be accepted, she was thrilled to be able to attend for two weeks of intensive vocal and choral training in July. “It was the best experience of my life, Holly recalled. Because of her participation in the camp, Holly received an email invitation to take part in the Hollywood Christmas Parade. In September, Holly sent a video of her doing the dance steps as well as singing a requested piece of music. Because the organization employed a rolling audition process, Holly learned the same day that she had been accepted. On Nov. 17, Holly received the music for the performance, and on Thanksgiving Day, she and her parents flew to California, where she rehearsed at Universal Studios on Nov. 23 and 24. The group performed a choreographed number to “A Christmas Song from “Elf The Musical by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin. amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a ninemember board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole
holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.” Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),” noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have

Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center in Lancaster during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) in support of the lives of those with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers in the Sears Mall of Park City Center every hour, every day during mall open hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to cover all available shifts; a shift is typically two to four hours. Individuals age 14 and older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. Church, community, civic, or school groups are welcome to sign up. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or lorispradling@hotmail.com. Calvary Homes’ board of directors recently announced the naming of the new chapel in honor of Dr. Eric Crichton, resident and former pastor of Calvary Church in Lancaster. The announcement was made during the retirement community’s annual Thanksgiving Praise Celebration held on Nov. 5. Crichton served as the senior pastor of Calvary Church for 23 years. In the following 34 years, Eric, now 97, and his late wife, Dorothy, moved to Calvary Homes retirement community, where he continued his service in the areas of board chair, committee leadership, and pulpit supply, while also serving various interim pastoral roles in the northeast. To be known as Crichton Chapel, the new assembly space will become a focal point for religious services and a wide variety
of other programs, many being offered by outside groups. The new 120-seat chapel, now under construction, is a key feature of a $2 million capital campaign called “Caring and Preparing for Today and Tomorrow. This campaign is intended to raise funds in partial support of a $13 million renovation of the community’s main facilities, which is now underway. So far, the community has raised $745,000 in gifts and pledges toward the $2 million goal, which is to be reached by 2022. Calvary Homes invites friends of the community and those influenced by Crichton’s ministry over 57 years to join in support of the chapel’s naming by providing gifts in honor of Crichton’s ministry. The chapel is slated to be dedicated in a celebration event when it is completed. Calvary Homes
The Rev. Bob Reid (left), board member, and Clifford K. Hurter (right), CEO, recently recognized Dr. Eric Crichton, for whom Calvary Homes’ new chapel will be named. expects the major phases of the campaign to be completed in late 2019. Those interested in supporting Crichton Chapel or the renova-
tion project should contact director of development Dan Snyder at 717-824-8816 or email development@calvaryhomes.org or visit www.calvaryhomes.org.

On All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, fourth-grade students at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH) remembered the saints who have gone before them with a special presentation for the school community and families. Under the direction of teacher Theresa Chanko, each student chose and researched the life of a saint. Students then dressed in costumes and told the stories of the saints’ lives to their
schoolmates. The presentations provided historical facts about the saints and offered insight into the lives of the saints. Saints chosen by students this year included St. Nicholas Charnetsky, St. Josephine Bakhita, St. Leopold Mandic, and St. Dorothy of Caesarea. The Lancaster City Alliance and community members of all ages planted 35 trees recently in areas of Lancaster city with little to no greenery. The trees will create a dramatic new entrance to the city’s southern gateway at South Queen Street and Highland Avenue. The tree planting is one part of the South Prince & South Queen Streets Neighborhood Enhancement Project, led by Lancaster City Alliance. The overall project includes improvements to fronts of homes, Adopt-A-Block participation, placement of sidewalk trash cans, and 100 trees for the neighborhood. The project stems from requests from neighbors and is part of recommendations in the city’s Building on Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan. The recently planted trees were made possible through many groups working together to benefit the city. This includes Lancaster City Alliance, City of Lancaster, Community Action Partnership, and Lancaster Tree Tenders. Funding was provided by the High Family Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ TreeVitalize Program. Service Project Benefits The Pet Pantry During the month of October, St. Anne School students collected toys, treats, leashes, bowls, and cat food and dog food to donate to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The Pet
Pantry offers assistance to families and animals in the community through the operation of a pet food bank program; sponsorship of lowcost spay, neuter, and vaccination
programs; and support of animal rescue through the organization’s adoption program. The St. Anne students chose to help the Pet Pantry in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast day is Oct. 4. St. Anne School encourages its students to model Jesus every day in their service to others both within the school and beyond its walls. Each month, a different service project is designated to educate the students about people in the community who could benefit from their service. Other service projects have focused on donations of food and cards for the St. St. Anne School teacher Donna Copeland (center) and kindergarten Anne School Brown Bag Lunch students (from left) Natalie Mazur, Eliza Brobst, Ira Chanko and Program, scarves and gloves for Henrik Snavely display the items collected for the Pet Pantry.
