Church Posts Dramatic Presentation Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Bowmansville, will host “Christmas Through the Ages,” a dramatic and musical presentation by Piercing Word, on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. Audience members will see the story of Christ’s birth
passed down through the ages from Luke to a medieval monk to Victorian carolers to a modern-day mother and child decorating for Christmas. The actors’ lines are taken word-forword from Luke 1-2 and other passages of Scripture. The show
Restaurants
features original music as well as selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including the “Hallelujah” chorus. There will be an opportunity to make freewill donation at the end of the performance. Piercing Word has been performing Scripture-based performances since 2007. “Christmas Through the Ages” is quadruple-cast to enable its presentation at 37 locations across Lancaster County and beyond this
Christmas season. Piercing Word’s mission is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” Piercing Word challenges everyone to memorize Scripture, and the group aims to equip people to do so by providing memorization workshops and discipleship programs. For more information about the performance at Cornerstone, readers may contact pastor Jahn M. Horgen at 717-445-0582.

PVPL Schedules Annual Fundraising Gala a By Ann Mead Ash
Library director Catherine O’Sullivan cannot wait to see the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) after it is set up and decorated for the annual Tasting Gala. “This is one of our major fundraisers, and it’s beautiful,” said O’Sullivan. “The library is transformed with candlelight and tablecloths.” The 2018 event, which will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, will offer attendees tastings of a variety of foods and beverages. This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables
offered samplings of roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and burgundy reduction, along with the popular creamy crab and corn chowder. “The soup is the high point,” said O’Sullivan. “That is a big (draw).” Shrimp cocktail, hoisin grilled pork tenderloin with Asian slaw, and local cheeses will also be served. This year’s dessert table will feature a variety of sweets, including chocolates donated by local businesses. Hot milk sponge cake will be brought to the venue by Sadie Ebersol, and sweet treats will be provided by a neighboring bakery. International coffees and teas

The Salvation Army will benefit from an annual holiday donation drive being organized by Sheetz For the Kidz. During the month of December, customers can donate at checkout at all Sheetz store locations. One hundred percent of customer donations will go directly to support the children. Each of the 582 stores will support 16 children from its local community by partnering with The Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families. Employees will volunteer their time to shop for items, wrap items and host holiday parties for the children and their families. At the parties, Santa will greet the children and present them with new toys, along with clothes and other items meeting basic needs. The children and their families will enjoy food, crafts, games and opportunities to take pictures with Santa. In addition to donating during checkout, readers may support the program by purchasing specially marked items at Sheetz, with a portion of proceeds supporting the holiday donation drive; shopping on AmazonSmile at https://smile. amazon.com and selecting Sheetz For the Kidz as the charity they would like to support; donating at www.sheetz forthekidz.org; or purchasing Sheetz Art Project swag at www.sheetzshop.com.

Michael R. Molla was installed as the third president of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was bookended by a kickoff breakfast, featuring community engagement tips from Michael Bunting of Lancaster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepening connections. The program reintroduced PCA&D to the Lancaster community and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Special speakers were Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists; Fred Lazarus IV, president emeritus of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and the Hon. Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster city. The event also included a video message from Samuel “Sammy” Hoi, president of Maryland Institute College of Art. Afterward, the PCA&D family and members of the Lancaster community gathered at PCA&D for a celebration that included food from the many traditions represented in Lancaster, along with music. All elements of the celebration related specifically to Lancaster. Molla said that his alma mater, Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., was like PCA&D in being a small, focused, personal college

that emphasizes individual student’s needs, active learning and mentorship. Molla served at MICA for a total of 26 years and led the college in the areas of student affairs, operations and strategic initiatives. As the associate vice president of student affairs, he launched MICA’s first residence life program and established a student affairs division for the college, which included on-site counseling and health care services, as well as diversity and safety initiatives. As vice president of operations, Molla was responsible for the development of the Campus Master Plan, including the design and construction of resident facilities; numerous academic, studio and shop spaces; a center for graduate education; and, most recently, an undergraduate design center. In the vice president of strategic initiatives position, Molla was responsible for strengthening the relationship between MICA and the city of Baltimore, including facilitating new urban initiatives to engage the community in support of the arts and expanding opportunities to city residents. In Lancaster, Molla seeks to explore the possibilities of the college’s contributions to the city of Lancaster and vice versa. local nonprofit and they know it matters. By paying it back, in turn, they help someone else.” LDHL gives loans once a year, and Lancaster County students attending an accredited program anywhere in the world full time may borrow money up to four years. Loans are not automatically renewed; borrowers must reapply every year. The amount awarded depends on how much money LDHL has received from community donors and student repayments; it has no endowment and receives no government funding. In August 2018, LDHL loaned $1,025,100 to 604 students. “The more money we receive, the more money we can give out,” Livengood remarked. Thanks to community support, the maximum amount a student may borrow each year has increased to $1,700. The maximum student debt is currently
a six-month grace period after graduation before they must start repaying their loan at the rate of $100 a month. LDHL officials hope that this holiday season folks will be inspired to participate in the organization’s first-ever Secret Santa event, which aims to pay off a portion of students’ debts anonymously. “The general idea was suggested by board members,” Livengood explained. “It’s based off the idea of people paying off layaways (at superstores), school lunch accounts, and electric bills. We thought it was a cool concept and a unique way to donate during the holiday season.” Donations to LDHL are taxdeductible. Organizations and individuals may donate to Secret Santa through Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. All of the funds will be divided among the borrowers,

That maximum amount was identified as the most LDHL may forgive without borrowers having to pay taxes on the forgiven debt. “We will use the money to pay off as many (debts) as possible,” Livengood said.
The application process for the 2019-20 school year will open on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019. Folks may learn more about Secret Santa or donate by visiting www.lancdollars.org. Those with questions may contact Livengood at 717-682-9194 or clivengood@lancdollars.org.
Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will
be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season.
Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their

Three Trips Around The Planet By Chelsea Peifer
Sometimes the wide-open road ahead can look impossible to conquer, but the leaders at Lifecycles are all about equipping students to rise to meet whatever challenges may arise. Founded by Lee DeRemer, the nonprofit mentoring program is committed to building young men of character through bicycling and outdoor adventures. One of the ways Lifecycles accomplishes that is through an annual summer challenge ride, and this year was the first time that the program offered two trips. The first summer journey, dubbed the Extreme Challenge Ride, was designed for Lifecycles participants ready for an advanced level of riding. A group of 10 teenage boys and six adult leaders spent one week navigating 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a

all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.lifecyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy. As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden - equivalent to more than three times around the planet - and over 22,000 volunteer hours and
10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 miles from Lancaster to Boston. “If you’re really ready, we’ll give you an experience you won’t forget,” said DeRemer. To inquire about volunteering at any of the locations, readers may email director@life cyclesteam.org or call 717-5862511. “We always love to have new volunteers of any age and riding ability,” remarked DeRemer.

camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.” Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C.,

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members. For complete Innovations Challenge details, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/innovation.

Luke 2:8 -12 8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

“Messiah” Sing-Along Christmas Eve Set For Dec. 28 Program Slated encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Both performances are open to anyone who wants to sing or listen. The timing of the events is designed not to interfere with Christmas and Easter schedules and to occur when professional musicians are less busy. At the event on Dec. 28, Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie will provide American Sign Language interpretation at Stevens’ suggestion. “The signers are really important,” said Leaman. “It started because Stevens came to one of the singalongs and she came up to me afterward (and mentioned having signers), and we have had signers ever since at both venues. “We may have people who can’t hear, (and also) others love it because it adds something,” Leaman added. Leaman encourages vocalists who wish to take part to practice using the “Learn and Practice Your Voice Part” link at www.messiahsingalong.com. Singers may rent or purchase music to use at the event. The event is free and open to the public. Early seating is advised. A freewill offering will be received to help finance the cost of the event. The concert is supported by local businesses, as well as the Huston Foundation, the Robert Carwithen Music Foundation, the J.S. Herr Foundation, the James M. and Lois B. Herr Family Foundation and the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.messiahsingalong.com and www.facebook.com/messiahsingalongs. Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church is located 1 mile south of Route 30 on Route 10.
Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, will present a Christmas Eve program titled “The Extra Ordinary Christmas” twice on Monday, Dec. 24. The drama is adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s
short story “Where Love Is, God Is.” No child care will be offered. Sign interpretation will be provided at the 5 p.m. program and Spanish translation at the 7 p.m. program. The community is also invited to Petra’s Sunday morning services on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 9 and 11 a.m. For more information, readers may contact Janice Baldauf at 717-354-5394, ext. 107, or janiceb@petra.church.

The Chester County Christian Chorale will present the 32nd annual Chester County “Messiah” Sing-Along on Friday, Dec. 28, at 7 p.m. at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. Area residents are invited to attend to sing or listen during the performance. Participating singers, who do not rehearse in advance, will be accompanied by a professional 16-piece orchestra. The sing-along will also feature professional soloists, including Heidi Shannon, soprano; Heidi Kurtz, mezzo soprano; Timothy Bentch, tenor; and Mark Moliterno, bass. The guest conductor will be Marcella Hostetler, Campus Chorale director at Lancaster Mennonite School. Complete biographies and photos of the soloists can be found at www.messiahsingalong.com/ the-artists. The Chester County Christian Chorale was founded in 1976 by Clair Leaman, who wanted to provide local singers an opportunity to sing with a professional orchestra and soloists, who are hired prior to the performance. On the night of the sing-along, members of the community who would like to sing in the choir are asked to arrive at the church at 6:30 p.m. Attire is business casual. Singers will then be organized by voice part. Leaman noted that between 130 to 150 singers generally take part. According to www.messiahsing along.com, the full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on Christ’s suffering and death. The third part concludes with triumph over sin and death through the Resurrection. Leaman explained that at Christmastime, the Chester County sing-along covers all of the first part, sections of the second part and excerpts of the third part of the score. A Lancaster County sing-along is also offered at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster during the Easter season. That program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. During the “Hallelujah” chorus, the audience is

Join us as we sing together many of your favorite Christmas Carols!
Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a journey back in time to when Christmas Day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18th-century Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when General Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas Day marked the start of a festive season that included 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about 18th-century traditions, listen to traditional holiday music by the Harrisburg-based musical group Seasons and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will be stationed in various rooms of the mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. The candlelight tours will
