Church To Offer Lenten Fish Fry BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For more than 40 years, St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia has been serving a Lenten fish fry to the community. While last year’s event was cut short by the pandemic, this year the event is continuing with a few changes. The Lenten fish fry will begin on

Friday, Feb. 19, and will run on Fridays through March 26. “We’ll be offering takeout service only, from 4 until 6:30 p.m.,” said Claire Storm, one of the event organizers. “(It) will be available at the Parish Center, Second and Union streets, in Columbia. Customers will be asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.” See Fish Fry pg 3

Horn Farm woodland steward Wilson Alvarez (center) leads a group of students in a hands-on class.

Horn Farm is offering a new Land Steward Training Program to promote ecological awareness and provide job skills.

Horn Farm Plans Land Steward Training Program earn how to be a good steward of the Earth at a new program offered by the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. The Land Steward Training Program will begin Tuesday, March 9, and will run on Tuesdays through June 29 at the center, 4945 Horn Road, York.

“We want people to have a baseline ecological knowledge, whether they are looking to be farming in the field or wooded areas.” “Horn Farm has run training programs for several years now,” said Alexis Campbell, executive director. “We started with farmer training, which evolved into regenerative farming training.”

From there, the center expanded its programming with a wider focus. “We developed a whole system approach so that we were not just focusing on field and farm spaces, but on wooded areas as well,” Campbell noted. “We hired a full-time woodland steward in 2018, and he developed a woodland training program.” The Land Steward program was a natural progression of the farm’s training focus. “We’re blending both the regenerative farming and woodland steward programs together and providing a hybrid program,” Campbell stated. “We want people to have a baseline ecological knowledge, whether they are looking to be farming in the field or wooded areas.” The Land Steward Training Program is an entry-level program that’s open to anyone with an interest in working with the land. “Our focus is on skill-building job readiness,” Campbell said. “ We’ll be

focused on deep ecological literacy.” The goal of the program is to equip students with skills that can be applied to a variety of land-based industries, including small-scale food production, regenerative farming, agroforestry, land restoration work and ecological landscaping. While the program will teach the basics of ecology, plant identification, horticulture and regenerative land management, it will also offer three practicums. Students may choose the regenerative farmer track, the woodland steward track or the whole landscapes track, which combines the two practicums. “It’s an intensive program, and we are looking to cater to people’s interests while still giving them a holistic experience,” Campbell remarked. The program will be taught by Andrew Horn, the farm manager, and Wilson Alvarez, the woodland steward, and will combine classroom training with hands-on work on the farm.

The creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details.

The Donegal-Witness Tree DAR Chapter supported the Lebanon VA Medical Center, the School District of Lancaster, and Dress for Success in December. To make it safe and easy for members to support these organizations, the DAR chapter organized a drive-up event, the Treasures From the Heart Trunk Drop, on Dec. 5. DAR members identified five outdoor drop-off locations where members could bring donations and give them directly to DAR volunteers. Clothing donated to benefit Dress for Success was valued at over $1,000. A $20 check was also received. themselves and their families by providing them with career and work attire. Monies also went to the School District of Lancaster’s Families in Transition Program, known as FIT. The goal of this program is to enable a student’s education to continue as uninterrupted as possible while the student is homeless. The items donated for Families in Transition were valued at $400. Additionally, $375 in monetary donations was received. The Lebanon VA Medical Center has been providing medical care to veterans for more than 70 years. The DAR chapter collected items valued at $250 for the organization along with a $75 check.

Campbell encourages anyone with an interest in ecology to apply for the program. “It’s a very simple application process, and it’s not a commitment if you apply,” she explained. Applications can be found by clicking on the Training tab on the Horn Farm’s website, https://hornfarmcenter.org. Although the course focuses on job skills and in-depth lessons, Campbell emphasized that anyone with an interest in the subject matter is invited to apply.

“You don’t need to be a professional to attend this course,” she noted. “If you just want to get more skills for how to restore ecosystems and how to make a positive impact on the environment, this is a great opportunity to do that. It’s a way to get out there and learn something new.” For more information on the program, readers may contact Campbell at 717-757-6441 or email e x e c u t i v e d i r e c t o r @hornfarmcenter.org.

Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out, and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all

the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with

Restaurant Week will take place from Friday, Feb. 19, through Sunday, Feb. 28, featuring more than 35 York city eateries. Delivery and takeout will be integral to this year’s event, along with dine-in options as allowed by state mandates. Normally, the event’s goal is to position York as one of the top culinary destinations in southcentral Pennsylvania by increasing awareness of the many dining opportunities available. This year, the event will aim to show the community what these restaurants can do when times are tough.

She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is

that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blingedout shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company.
