Hope@22 Will Raise Funds And Spirits BY CATHY MOLITORIS

A baby has brittle bone disease. Two people have been diagnosed with brain tumors. Another man, who is just 39 years old, has ALS. These are some of the people who will benefit from the support of Lancaster County Field of Hope this year. The Columbia-based organization helps people in Lancaster County who are facing health hardships, and

you can be a part of this mission by attending Hope@22, a fundraiser for the organization. Hope@22 will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Garth gallery, 22 S. Second St., Columbia. The event - named for the address of the gallery - will feature a silent auction, giveaways, beer from Pour Man’s Brewing, wine and lite fare. Josh Wolpert will provide live entertainment. See Hope pg 3

Displaying some of the works that will be auctioned off are Karen Spina (left) and Cle Berntheizel.

Supporting The Library With Local Art here’s no shortage of talented artists who have called Columbia home. Some of their work will be featured at Columbia Public Library’s second annual art auction on Sunday, May 15. A preview will occur inside the library, 24 S. Sixth St., beginning at 1:30 p.m., and the auction will start at 3 p.m. on the library terrace, weather permitting. Lite fare and beverages will be served. “There will be something for everybody,” said Karen Spina, a member of the auction committee. “We’re selling about 10 pieces that are being deaccessioned from the library’s permanent collection.” Additional pieces up for auction will include works by Wilfred Ferguson and items donated by local families. “These are very generous donations of (works by) gallery-caliber artists,” Spina noted. Several oil paintings depicting local scenery will be refurbished and reframed before the sale, with services provided by Garth gallery in Columbia.

The first auction raised more than $10,000 for the library, much of which was used to condition the space where the permanent collection is stored. This year’s proceeds will go toward restoration and conservation of a Lloyd Mifflin piece that hangs in a room off the lobby. Cle Berntheizel, founder of Garth gallery and a member of the auction committee, encouraged everyone to come out for the auction. “It’s a way to get local art out into the community,” he stated. “It’s a nice annual event we can do to help the library.” Spina agreed, adding, “It’s free, so why not come? There’s free food and free music from Columbia School of Music. It’s going to be a nice community day.” For more information and to see some of the works being auctioned, visit https://columbiapubliclibrary .org/art-auction or follow the library’s Facebook page. Sponsorship opportunities are available to help underwrite auction costs. For more information, contact Robin Gamby at 717575-9032 or rcgamby@comcast.net.

Along with live bidding, the auction will feature a buy-it-now table. “We’ll have art and books and Columbia memorabilia,” Spina stated. The event will also feature a silent auction of seven homemade cakes presented in vintage glass cake stands. “These will be made from ladies in town who are good home bakers,” Spina said. “There will be a good variety of flavors.” This is the second art auction at the library. The first was held in September of last year. Going forward, the event will be held annually on the Sunday after Mother’s Day. The library has a large collection of artwork, some of which is displayed throughout the building and some of which is in storage. “The deaccessioning process is always a bit painful,” said Steve Sherk, library board president. “However, it’s also gratifying to know that these treasures will hang in homes and businesses where they will be admired and appreciated. In addition, the funds raised at … the auction will enable the library to conserve and display important pieces in its permanent collection.”

COLUMBIA - HELLAM - WRIGHTSVILLE

Welcome to the Battle will bring together community agencies to discuss survivor impact, from rescue to restoration. Attendees will learn about the latest tactics traffickers are using to recruit local women into the sex trade, how to identify trafficking activity and what to do if they suspect a family member or friend might be a target of traffickers. This is the fifth year for the fundraising event, said Alicia Corrado, executive director of NSI. “Lancaster County just launched a local Human Trafficking Task Force,” she explained. “This year, proceeds raised will go to (the task force) to aid their efforts as they rescue survivors of trafficking in our area.” NSI is a member of the task force, and the agency works to offer rescued victims of trafficking access to traumainformed, comprehensive care, Corrado stated. NSI owns and operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for domestic sextrafficking victims. “Our goal is for every survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored, so she can return to the community and enjoy a life of sustained independence,” Corra-

do remarked. The task force uses the victim-centered approach, focusing on the restorative process of each victim, said task force coordinator Brad Ortenzi, who will be one of the panelists. Along with Ortenzi, Welcome to the Battle will feature panelists Heather Adams, Lancaster County District Attorney; Elizabeth Nolan, NSI clinical director; Heather Castellino, deputy attorney general of Eastern Pennsylvania; and Jessica Williams, Pennsylvania state trooper and Human Trafficking Task Force coordinator for Eastern Pennsyl-

vania. The panelists will present a discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with opportunities for questions beforehand and afterward. Other agencies that will be represented at Welcome to the Battle include FREE (Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved), ZOE International, Greenlight Operation, She’s Somebody’s Daughter and TFC Global. Corrado said inviting panelists from outside Lancaster County, including Castellino and Williams, is a deliberate move on NSI’s part to underscore the pervasiveness of human trafficking.

“(We want) to further help the audience understand the work that is being done to combat the vicious crime of trafficking in Pennsylvania, not just in Lancaster and surrounding counties,” she stated. “(We want) to also highlight what the community can do to keep their families safe and how the community should report to the task force when they see anything suspicious or come across a potential victim.” For more information on Welcome to the Battle or to purchase tickets, visit https://northstarinitiative.org /welcome-to-the-battle

Hope from pg 1 people from out of state or anyone who can’t come to the event can bid.” Heth remarked that Garth provides a unique space for the event. “It’s an art gallery, so there are all kinds of neat things to look at while you’re there,” she said. She also noted that the 2022 recipients of Field of Hope’s support are invited to attend Hope@22 as the organization’s guests and will be introduced at the event. Applicants are evaluated individually when determining who will receive financial support each year, she said. Since its inception, Field of Hope has helped 26 recipients, giving away just shy of $235,000. In the past, the auction has raised $6,000, and Heth said she’s hoping this year will match or sur-

pass that amount. Tickets are not required to attend Hope@22, but a door donation is requested. Heth noted that the event will take place on the second floor of the gallery, so stairs are used to access the space. “Come out and enjoy an evening of giving to others and supporting those who are going through a rough time,” she commented. “Come out and meet some new people. It’s a relaxing evening, although the bidding does get a little competitive. It’s just a fun night out.” For more information on Hope@22 or to access online bidding for the auction, visit www.lancofieldofhope.com.

O’Donnell To Portray Queen Victoria The Arts at Millersville University will welcome back Candace O’Donnell to the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, for “ Victoria’s Secrets - ‘He Was My All in All.’” Shows will take place on Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall. O’Donnell will portray Queen Victoria of England and will be joined on stage by her granddaughter, Keeghan McLane, as Princess Beatrice. This is the third show at the Ware Center for O’Donnell, who previously portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln and actress Sarah Bernhardt. “Victoria’s Secrets” centers on Victoria’s relationship with

her husband, Prince Albert, who took over the monarchy, and in effect, ruled as king. After Albert’s sudden death when Victoria was 40, Victoria devoted herself to memorializing and deifying him, which included sleeping every night under his portrait with both his dressing gown and a marble cast of his head at her side. The show includes information drawn by recent scholars from the thousands of pages of Victoria’s diaries, which she began at age 8 and continued until her death. The program will be introduced by McLane, who plays the role of Victoria’s youngest child, now in her 50s. As audience participation is her

trademark, O’Donnell will ask attendees to sing along with McLane to “God Save the Queen” and to return her signature royal wave. O’Donnell is retired from teaching English at Elizabethtown College and is a nationally published author. Over the years, she has performed at a number of local theaters. She appeared in Aurora Films’ “Another Harvest Moon.” Most recently, she was in Theater of the Seventh Sister’s “20th Century Blues,” directed by Michael Swanson, which was nominated by Broadway World Central PA in 2019 for honors in four categories. McLane, a Lancaster native, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts

in psychology with a minor in theater at Temple University. She is the acting finance director for Temple’s Insomnia Theater organization, leading and participating in 24-hour productions twice every semester. Effective March 1, masks are optional at Millersville University locations. Tickets for students are discounted. To purchase tickets, visit www.artsmu.com, call 717-871-7600, visit the box office at the Ware Center, or stop by the box office in Room 103 of the Student Memorial Center on the Millersville University campus.

Transfer Tuesdays are designed specifically for students who attend or have attended another college and are looking to complete their degree at York College. Attendees will get a transfer-centric perspective of admissions, credits, financial aid, and scholarships. An optional campus tour will be offered after the presentation. Two different sessions are available. Sessions are available each Tuesday at 11 a.m. on campus and every other Tuesday at 3 p.m. virtually. All are welcome to attend

an information session and campus tour. These daily sessions consist of an overview of the college from the admissions team. A student ambassador guides attendees around campus and answers questions about life at York College, from playing varsity or club sports to living in a residence hall. For more details on these visit opportunities, contact the Admissions Office at admissions@ycp.edu or 717849-1600. For information on measures being taken to ensure the health and safety of campus visitors, visit www.ycp.edu/admissions/visit -york/campus-visit-guidelines.

In April, the Penn State Master Gardeners will accept applications for its 2022 class. Training includes a weekly three-hour class beginning in October and ending in March. Class topics include botany, plant propagation, soil health and fertilizer management, composting, controlling pests safely, entomology, plant diseases, vegetables, lawn care, pruning, woody ornamentals, herbaceous plants, native plants, weeds, and invasives. The Master Gardener program is recruiting people who have a strong interest in horticulture and enjoy communicating with, teaching, and learning from other community gardeners. A commitment to ongoing volunteer work is also needed.

Potential trainees are asked to attend one of the virtual information sessions scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, or at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 31. The introductory sessions are free, but registration is required. Visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Master Gardener Training - Lancaster” to find details and to register for one of the sessions. The 2022 Master Gardener class will be selected based on the application and interview. The fee to participate in the program covers the cost of the manual and instructions. March is Women’s History Month, and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) invites individuals to consider purchasing an Honoring Our Women Veterans license plate to recognize the contributions that woman veterans have made to the nation’s history through their military service. A portion of the cost of each plate goes to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF). The Honoring Our Women Veterans license plate is available for passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds. The plate is available for purchase by anyone who wants to

The VTF issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that aid veterans service organizations and county directors of veterans affairs.
