Pine Grove schedules Clothing Closet

Almost every year that it is held, the Pine Grove Clothing Closet, a clothing giveaway event that provides items for men, women, and children, changes a little with the goal of improving. In 2023, the event grew from offering only children’s clothing, toys, and books to providing gently used items for teenagers and adults.

This year, organizers have added extra donation hours during the week prior to the giveaway. Donation hours will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Tuesday, Feb. 11, through Friday, Feb. 14. From Tuesday, Feb. 18, through Thursday, Feb. 20, hours will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and also from 6 to 8 p.m. each day. “It’s like two weeks (to donate this year),” commented Pine Grove associate pastor of ministries

Jaiden Brandt. “The week of (the event), we will actually have evening donation hours so that people who work during the day will have time to donate.”

This year’s Pine Grove Clothing Closet will be held at the church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brandt stated that the goal of the event is to show love to area residents in need by reaching out in a tangible way. Brandt reported that the church great room will be filled with free clothing and items for children; two other rooms - one with men’s clothing and one with women’s clothing - and a hallway where shoes will be available will be set up for the giveaway. Brandt noted that coats, shoes, boots, hats, scarves, and mittens are usually among the items available at the giveaway.

Another addition to this year’s event will be a table offering

Making Mom proud

When Garden Spot High School 2020 graduate Sabrina Dickson first headed to college, she did not know what she wanted to do with her life. After changing her major several times and considering taking a gap year, Dickson landed at Smoker Door Sales in Kinzer, where her title of experience and engagement coordinator covers a variety of duties.

“This just kind of happened through work experience,” said Dickson. “I realized all I want to do is build relationship in

a career that has an outward mindset, and this is it.”

Dickson handles both human resources and marketing for Smoker Door, but her position also focuses on coordinating company connections with local organizations such as The Factory, where Smoker Door is a sponsor in the BIG Shots fundraiser, in which Smoker employees participate, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, for which Smoker employees put together Christmas tree kits for area families. “We also host food drives and personal care item drives,” pointed out Dickson.

free coffee, hot chocolate, and pastries. “Our youth in grades six to 12 will serve (the food items),” noted Brandt.

Donations that will be accepted for the giveaway include clothing for people of all ages. Specifically, clothing items that are clean, smoke-free, and sorted by size and gender are requested. Car seats, cribs, and other baby furniture items are not accepted.

“If (donated items) aren’t marked, we slap a sticker on them when they arrive,” explained Brandt, who pointed out that presorting will help the up to 70 church volunteers who work to set up the giveaway on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 20, and during the day on Friday, Feb. 21. “On Thursday evening, a team of church volunteers starts setting up,” stated Brandt. “They get the tables out and start unloading a big trailer in the parking lot

Sheila’s shopping spree

When Sheila Barrage, who works as a supervisor at Shady Maple Farm Market, won a shopping spree at the company Christmas party, her first thought was to ask Brandon Ramiro, her friend who works in produce, to push the cart for her during her dash through the market. Sheila and her helper would have two minutes to put up to $500 worth or groceries in her cart. “(Ramiro) has been with the company forever,” shared Sheila. “He knows the store.”

Sheila, who lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment, has a standard freezer and refrigerator, plus a small fridge in the second room that her son, Ben, stays in when he visits. With limited storage for perishable items, Sheila knew a plan was needed to help her make

Schreiber Center unveils memorabilia display

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development unveiled its new “Wizard of Oz” installation during its annual Holiday Open House and Art Walk. The event took place on Dec. 11, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The new installation was designed to honor and display a “Wizard of Oz” memorabilia collection donated by Dennis Denenberg, a former Schreiber client who overcame speech challenges with the help of the center’s founder, Edna Schreiber. Denenberg’s story is a testament to the transformative work the Schreiber Center does, embodying the courage to overcome challenges, a passion for education and sharing wisdom, and the kindness of paying it forward.

The “Tribute to the Wizard of Oz” installation debuted at a time when the story is once again receiving attention from marking its 85th anniversary and from the excitement surrounding the recent film “Wicked.” The timeless themes,

including the importance of support systems and the journey to overcome challenges and discover inner resilience, resonate with the experiences of the children and families served by Schreiber. Like Dorothy’s journey to self-discovery, the therapy and support provided by Schreiber empowers clients to face their fears through action, grow by confronting challenges, and uncover the strength and potential they have had within them all along.

Denenberg’s career as an educator, an author, and a national advocate for teaching children about real-life heroes reflects the values of Schreiber’s mission: “Enriching lives. Giving hope.” His donation seeks to ensure that his collection of Oz memorabilia will inspire future generations of children and families at Schreiber.

The installation unveiling was accompanied by a meet-and-greet with Denenberg. The open house also included an Art Walk showcasing pieces

created by past Schreiber clients and staff, including a work by 2023 ambassador Malcolm Corley, who will be in attendance. Additionally, children from the S.T.A.R.S. Preschool gave three musical performances; craft stations for children were available in each therapy department; and holiday treats and photos with Santa were provided, sponsored by Manheim Auto Auction.

“The Wizard of Oz” includes the idea that “there’s no place like home,” a concept that is central to Schreiber’s family-first approach to therapy. The center’s mission stems from the desire to create a supportive, nurturing space for families and children to grow and thrive together. The installation celebrates the journey these children take to overcome challenges and discover the power of believing in themselves through the strength found in community.

Smoker Door Sales

Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) and Linville Hill Christian School to arrange three to six job shadows and internships per semester. Dickson’s job involves supplying employee volunteers to move furniture in the local emergency shelter or set up chairs and tables for bingo events. “It’s a very widespread position,” Dickson noted.

The position of experience and engagement coordinator was created to help implement the core values of Smoker, which include valuing people over profits; generosity; and developing leaders. The missional approach of the company includes living out core values in all aspects of work and serving the community. “(The final core value is) ‘we make our moms proud,’” explained Dickson. “That’s kind of a catch-all for good character,” she noted, adding that owner Jeff Smoker often says, “We’re in the business of selling garage doors, but we do that as a means to give back to our community.”

Before Dickson filled the position, no one at Smoker Door was coordinating the efforts to live out the core values from a single vantage point. “They needed someone who had the time to prioritize ways for us to make an impact,” said Dickson. “To live out the vision outside of financial donations, (we needed) to put feet on the ground getting employees out there and building relationships.”

One of the outreaches Dickson enjoys most is the mentorship program she and a few other employees take part in through PVSD. The Smoker team members meet with Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) juniors to help them prepare for interviews and provide career advice. Out of that involvement grew the idea of granting an annual scholarship to a PVHS senior. In 2024, the first Smoker Door Sales Character Scholarships were given to Mariah Kauffman and Kylee Worrell. “Because we pride ourselves on core values and character, I thought there should be a scholarship that was character based,” explained Dickson, who also wanted the scholarship to be of the same dollar amount as many academically based awards. Applicants were asked to answer questions such as “How have you been generous?” and “How have you developed leaders and valued people over yourself?” “We had so many great stories to choose from we gave out two ($1,000 scholarships),” explained Dickson, who noted that the funds awarded may be used at any institution of higher learning. “(The scholarship was) given to two people who have shown exemplary leadership qualities, have

gone above and beyond to help others, and taken the initiative to lead and inspire,” Dickson added.

While much of the community outreach initiated by Smoker Door Sales is done in the local area, Dickson said that the team does not restrict giving to Pequea Valley. “I send people to Water Street (Mission) to volunteer in the food outreach center.”

Internally, Dickson and a co-worker partner to organize a leadership development program with employees. “We read books on leadership and have discussions,” she noted.

Dickson is excited to continue finding creative ways to fulfill Smoker’s mission. “Our culture is not just a policy or program but a way of life that influences everything we do,” she stated. “It’s so cool.” She finds the job fulfilling as well as exciting. According to Dickson, her favorite part of the job is

coordinating community outreach. “That is so rewarding to me,” she stated. “That is a blessing. It’s the Lord (at work).”

(where the clothing donations are stored). All day Friday, the two shifts sort the clothes and put (them) on tables and coat racks and get (them) displayed.”

The giveaway began with two mothers who attend Pine Grove who decided to give away children’s clothing. One was a mother of four and the other a mother of six, and the two had a lot of gently used clothing items to pass on for reuse. Brandt noted that both those mothers still volunteer to help out at the event. “It’s cool how it started with those two moms with extra clothing to give,” he noted.

In addition to provid -

ing free clothing, the giveaway has introduced a number of families to the ministry of Pine Grove. Brandt said that last year 123 families came through church doors to the giveaway, and that 69 of those were attending the event for the first time. According to Brandt, those numbers translate to 270 children and 203 adults served.

Any items left after the giveaway will be donated to local thrift shops and to Unto in Mount Joy.

Coats for Kids warms extremities and hearts

Picture this: A makeshift store containing aisles and aisles of brand-new kids’ coats separated by sizes, styles and colors. Families in need can enter, peruse the winter coats, select one and take it home.

That’s what Coats for Kids looks like. That’s what the Salvation Army means when it says, “Doing the most good.”

“My favorite part about

Coats for Kids is when the kids go into where the coats are,” said Shady Boules, who’s been Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ operations and development manager for five years.

“You see their eyes open. I tell them, ‘Go ahead; pick a coat.’ They’ll answer, ‘Do you mean I can pick a coat?

Do you mean I can pick my favorite color?’ For some, it’s their first time. To see kids making a decision on what things they can wear

is very rewarding.”

It is at that exact moment when all the hard work that goes into the Salvation Army Lancaster’s Coats for Kids program becomes worth it.

The 30th annual initiative to make sure every kid in Lancaster County has a brand-new winter coat continues. Coats for Kids, which is currently being implemented at the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ headquarters’ gymnasium at 131 S. Queen

St., Lancaster, kicked off its efforts in October, and the program will run through the end of March or until the weather turns warmer.

“Once fall arrives, some people start thinking, ‘How do I get coats for my kids?’” said Boules. “We want kids to be able to go to school and make sure the other kids can’t tell their coats came from the Salvation Army. We treat our neighbors with dignity. We want them to be proud of their

coats.”

This season’s Coats for Kids initiative has already distributed 1,900 brandnew kids’ coats to kids and families in need from Lancaster County. The Salvation Army expects to hand out another 600 coats before the end of the winter season.

Individuals can still donate brand-new coats by dropping them off at the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ headquarters, or they can donate monetarily.

“If people have more coats, we’d appreciate it. We need more coats all the time,” said Boules. “We hope we’ll keep doing it. Every single dollar for this program goes right to Coats for Kids. It doesn’t go anywhere else. We want to make sure we have enough coats for next year and the year after.”

The Coats for Kids program is designed for kids up to 16 years of age who reside in Lancaster County. Following an application and interview process, each child in need is permitted to choose one coat.

“We cover every ZIP code in Lancaster County,” said Boules. “Some people think we’re only serving people from the city, but that’s not true.”

“It gives hope to the children when they know there’s a community standing behind them,” Boules continued. “We have a lot of people dropping off checks and saying, ‘We were part of this program years ago. I’d like to give back and pay for someone else.’”

It takes nearly 150 volunteers - community members, members of churches, companies and service clubs and students - to make Coats for Kids run smoothly. In the early days of September, local television station WGAL helped raise $130,000 for the program.

“We’re very thankful for the people who believe in this service,” said Boules. “We are blessed to have a generous community. We want to tell the community that we’re here to help. The door is still open.”
