Lampeter-Strasburg

This library story features a happy homecoming.
Former Strasburg-Heisler librarian Jennifer “JJ” Landis has returned as the branch’s director, officially beginning her new post Jan. 1.
Landis came back a few weeks earlier to work with her predecessor, Kristin Fernitz. Fernitz, who served as director for 17 years, is still working at the library to ease the transition.
Landis had previously worked at the Strasburg-Heisler Library for about a decade as the children’s librarian before accepting a job in the propane industry in 2021. When the library needed
a new director, it seemed like an ideal fit.
“When I knew they needed someone, I was very interested in applying,” Landis said. “I felt like lightning struck me and I thought, ‘Of course I want this job.’”
The first several weeks have gone as well as she had hoped.
“Coming back here felt like coming home,” said Landis.
“Many of the same staff are here, and it’s been so welcoming from staff members, board members, and patrons that I know. It’s been easy to feel welcomed, but there’s still a learning curve.”
Landis said she does not plan to institute any big changes because none are necessary. “My
goal is to keep things moving in the direction they’re moving,” she said. “We currently have good momentum. We have lots of community support, wonderful programs set up, and my goal is to keep it moving in that direction. I don’t have any plans to make any big additions or changes because the ship is sailing smoothly.”
The director says the library must continue to work on increasing public awareness.
“Always a goal is more community involvement,” said Landis. “I want people in the community to be aware of what we have to offer and to realize that we’re here. We have eight pre-K programs a week, lots of programs for adults, and the materials we circulate. I

It was a banner day for Garden Spot FFA members of Lampeter-Strasburg High School at the PA FFA Mid-Winter Convention Jan. 6 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.
Garden Spot FFA celebrated members receiving their first blue corduroy jacket and others achieving the milestone of earning their Keystone Degree.
“The receiving of their Keystone Degree is a marker of
success and reflection,” adviser Katie Ranck said. Six Garden Spot FFA members received their Keystone Degree. To be able to receive the Keystone Degree, members had to have invested over $1,000 or have over 300 hours invested into a supervised agricultural experience (SAE), completed at least 30 hours of community service, participated actively in their FFA chapter events, and held various leadership roles. Do you know about The Fridge? No, I’m not talking about a typical run-of-themill refrigerator that you can find in nearly every kitchen of nearly every home. If you swap the neglected Tupperware container of old leftovers with locally sourced bar bites and replace the shelf of half-used condiments with hundreds of craft beers, you no longer have a common man’s icebox; you have The Fridge, a bottle shop and pizza café located at 534 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster.
The Fridge joined Lancaster city’s eclectic roster of eateries and bistros in 2011, but to understand its role in the local community, we have to go all the way back to the very beginning of the 18th century (bear with me).
In 1709, German immigrants made their new
home in Conestoga, the fourth settlement of its kind in Lancaster County. Among the many cultural traditions and customs brought from their European homeland, the first German-Americans arrived with a mighty thirst for beer. At first, beer was brewed inside taverns and inns, but breweries quickly began popping up to match the growing community’s penchant for pints. By the 19th century, Lancaster County was a well-known hotbed of breweries, earning the nickname Little Munich in 1868 after The Daily Intelligencer published a story that read, “Lancaster in America occupies the same position that Munich does in Germany,” citing the area’s rapidly growing brewing industry. Now let’s fast-forward to 2019. On a warm spring afternoon, I was sitting beside a console television on a sidewalk in downtown Lancaster city. I had greatly underestimated the weight of the massive appliance - which I found on the sidewalk a few minutes earlier - and I was only able to carry it halfway to my apartment before losing my grip. I sat next to the TV in defeat, cursing my hubris and wondering how I was going to finish my poorly thought-out venture, when the friendly face of Wyatt Deutsch appeared. Wyatt, a Warwick High School alumnus and recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, was dropping off his resume at local restaurants and cafes. Instead of finding a job, he found a gargantuan TV and a sweaty fool. After Wyatt graciously helped me haul the TV to my apartment, I spent a few minutes talking to him and his now-wife, Alex Douglas-Deutsch, who told me about their dream

Jones was a contestant on Season 2 of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” where he successfully fooled the duo. He was also a Top 12 semifinalist on Season 12 of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”
In addition, Brian Curry will perform one show only

An award-winning mentalist, Curry has wowed audiences in venues across the country, including his show “The Good Liar” in Washington, D.C. He’s been featured on “Penn and Teller: Fool Us” and has performed at corporate events and on cruise ships on all seven continents.
Finally, “Imaginarium,” a dinner and magic show, will be featured on select days in March. Illusionist Brett Myers will take audiences to a largerthan-life circus, where people appear, disappear and fly. First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Romantic Flourishes,” on First Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey.
Selections will include Felix Mendelssohn’s “Allegro maestoso e vivace” from Sonata No. 4, “Canon
in B Major” by Robert Schumann, and “Rhosymedre” (“My Song Is Love Unknown”) by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Other works include “Grand Choeur in B-Flat” by Theodore Debois and “Choral in E Major” by Joseph Jongen. The concert is free and open to the public. don’t know if everyone in the Strasburg community quite realizes what we have.”
That creates a domino effect. “With that public awareness comes more users of the library, which brings in more donations, which we need to survive,” Landis said.
“We want to get out in the community as much as possible,” said Landis. “Continue to partner with local businesses like we do for our summer reading kickoff and be known at school board meetings and borough council meetings.”
Landis is already a fixture in the community, having lived in Lampeter for 24 years. After earning a teaching degree, Landis got a library and information science master’s degree from Drexel University in 2011 and was in that program when she volunteered at the Strasburg-Heisler Library.
“When I was in education, I did spend time in an elementary school library and that got me interested in school libraries,” said Landis. “Reading, writing, and teaching all culminates with the library. I am passionate about freedom of information and access for everybody, and that everybody in the community is welcome, those kinds of ideals. Those are my passions, and public libraries are the perfect fit for that.”
The Strasburg-Heisler Library is located at 143 Precision Ave. Hours are Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Landis says the library has two major events over the next two months. Throughout February and March, the library will be collecting underwear that will be donated to LS Together. The fifth annual event is known as “Drop Your Drawers,” a nod to the children’s book character Captain Underpants.
Adult Trivia Night will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Space is limited.

Brianna Shaffer, Audrey Wagner, Ian Lyons, and Owen Williams all met these requirements.
“It was definitely a lot of hard work with the FFA,” Immel said. “I started my freshman year and was a jacket recipient. It’s been an agricultural journey. My freshman year, I was not a
public speaker, and through the FFA I’ve developed my voice in agriculture. It’s a testament to what working in FFA can do for you.”
Immel, who has been riding horses since she was 7, completed supervised agricultural experiences, journaling her time spent training horses, feeding the horses, and mucking stalls. Immel raised two sheep for the West Lampeter Fair, competed in the national convention in agriculture sales, and was the runner-up in extemporaneous speaking at the state convention. She also earned a spot in the state fair queen competition after being named West Lampeter Fair Queen.
This year, FFA Alumni and Supporters donated 1,369 jackets to Pennsylvania FFA Members, setting a new record for the highest number of jackets donated to date. Local donations were made possible by chapter supporters Anita Martin, Donald and Emily Welk, Franco Family LLC, Jeri and Molly Ross, Josh Brian, Joshua Weaver, Kim Rubincam, South View Farms, Jay Sangrey, Jessica Thomas, and Brian Weldy. Among the recipients, 15 Garden Spot FFA members were proud to receive and zip up their FFA jackets during the convention. They were Alex Franco, Sarah Conrad, Ashlynn Frey, Zach Heil, Ashlyn Donaldson, Olivia Rubincam, Trent Thomas, Landon Giberson, Khloe Parsons, Kinsley Ferreira, Kylie Dyer, Lillie Byers, Maddy Albright, Rex Giberson, and Sebastian Delgado. To receive a jacket, members were evaluated on their participation in the FFA and had to fill out an online application. ”Every step in this journey may not be easy, but the hard work you put in will present opportunities and shape your future,” PA FFA Alumni president Sher -
isa Nailor told the crowd at the 96th Mid-Winter Convention.
Freshmen jacket recipients Frey and Conrad share a similar story. “I was really looking forward to it ever since my older sister (Kayla) got hers (in 2020),” Frey said. “I went to Mid-Winter Convention one time, and she was receiving her
jacket. I was watching her and watching everyone get up and put theirs on, and I was just thinking, ‘That’s going to be me one day, for sure.’”
Conrad said, “When I was in middle school, I remember my brother (Jonathan) going to all FFA events (in 2020), and he always came back so

of running a restaurant together someday.
At this point, you’re probably wondering what this article is even about. Well, now you know two things: Beer has played an important role in communities across Lancaster County for hundreds of years, and Wyatt Deutsch is the kind of guy who helps you carry a 100-pound. TV down the block. In April 2024, Wyatt took over as owner of The Fridge, after he and Alex spent a few years learning the ins and outs of the local craft beer and food industry as it weathered the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. “It’s really something how in the blink of an eye your whole life changes,” Wyatt said. “That’s the thing Alex says all the time, ‘How many people can say they chased their dream?’”
Wyatt’s vision for The Fridge is reflective of the beer industry’s longstanding importance to the Lancaster community. Although he has no desire to change the formula that made The Fridge a cornerstone of the local craft beer scene, Wyatt said he’s brainstorming a few ideas to expand the restaurant’s role in the community, such as organizing public events and opening a neighborhood bar in the West End. “Lancaster’s a really tight-knit community, and we want to get more involved,” added Wyatt. “Whether you’re in Lititz, Strasburg or down in Solanco, you want a good community, and we’re fortunate to have that backbone.”
In addition to the closeness of the Lancaster community as a whole, Wyatt
attested to the camaraderie between the area’s growing number of craft breweries. “That’s my favorite thing about this community specifically; we’re all trying to help each other out,” Wyatt said. “There are more than 30 breweries in the county now, and we like to recommend them to visitors. Each brewery is getting better and better every year.”

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold a workshop, Intro to German Script, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the community room.
Mennonite Life archivist and librarian Julia Wiker will teach participants how to read Kurrentschrift, a distinct styling of the German script alphabet, as well as abbreviations and variations in writing and spelling. The session will also offer practice interpreting 18th- and 19th-century family records from Mennonite Life’s collections.
Learning to interpret
Kurrentschrift can be a valuable skill for genealogy research, not just for those with Swiss Mennonite ancestry, but for anyone with ancestral roots in German-speaking countries. The text is also found in the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur, which combines the elegant script with vibrant, colorful illustrations.
Knowledge of German is not required for this workshop. There is a fee.
To register in advance, visit www.mennonitelife .org/events.
In the case of inclement weather, the workshop will be postponed to Friday, Feb. 14.
will supply music.
The inaugural Philanthropist Award will be presented to Dr. Samuel and Dena Lombardo, huge financial supporters of Schreiber for many years and key supporters of a recent expansion.
A highlight of the gala is the unveiling of the yearly Schreiber Ambassadors, who share their stories of perseverance.
Visit https://schreiber pediatric.org for more information or to purchase tickets to the gala. Tickets may be purchased until Friday, Feb. 14, or until they are sold out. Donations may be made up to March 10.
Pam and Greg, the latter of whom has been a board member for eight years, are in their third year as gala co-chairs. Their older son, Alex, went to Schreiber for 18 years. “That’s one of the
reasons we’re involved,” Pam said.
Alex graduated from Temple University. Now 30 years old, he works as an architect. “Alex has physical disabilities, so Schreiber was who we went to for speech, physical and occupational therapy, and that’s what helped him to be able to go to college and be independent,” said Pam. “That’s why my husband and I have an affiliation with them, to give back to an organization that gave to us for so many years.”
The Oleksas feel companionship with other families that have the same need. “That’s now our goal as parents, to give back to other families, so they, too, can have the same opportunities with their child to be an independent person in the community, living independently,” Pam said.
The entire family is involved. All three children are Hempfield High School graduates. The Oleksas’ daughter, Ashley, a teacher who was inspired by Alex’s journey, is on the gala committee. The younger son,
Nick, lives in Dallas but is returning home to attend the gala.
“It’s our family mission to support this wonderful organization,” Pam said. “And we have a ton of friends who support us in this mission, some on the board and committee.”
The gala is a major fundraiser for Schreiber. “The reason that we do the gala every year is we’re trying to make up for the $2.5 million deficit for services that are provided to the 2,000 children who receive services every year,” Pam said. “Our goal is to provide services to as many children as possible, even if they don’t have any ability to pay, their parents don’t have the ability to pay. We still want to provide care to those children.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, provides occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, day care, infant care, and preschool for children with developmental disabilities, developmental delays, or acquired injuries.
“We have such an out -
pouring of support from the community,” said Pam. “The generosity of our community been amazing the last two years my husband and I have chaired.”
Pam says the committee is hoping to have 400 individuals attend the event.
“Our gala has continued to grow,” said Pam. “We were at a smaller venue two years ago. Last year, we were at the Imperial for our 40th. We needed to find a larger venue. It’s just been very positive, the growth.”
Pam also credits the Schreiber fund development team consisting of Danielle Sunday and Kristen Masengard. “There is a team of committee members who play a huge role in gathering sponsorships, silent auction items, and live auction items, which are the things that make our event a success,” Pam said. “The big thing is we’re so fortunate our local community supports the needs of the local children. Every year, it’s heartwarming for me to see that outpouring of support.”
The Ladies Night Out group from Millersville Community Church will meet on Friday, Feb. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The group previously met at the church’s Hope Campus on Bender Road, but it will now meet at the church’s Grace Campus, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville.
Kim Smith will present “God’s Stitching.” She will share how people’s lives are like a patchwork quilt - sometimes filled with beautiful memories and moments and at other times seemingly tattered and torn, strewn with
painful events. Smith will share some of her life experiences.
Smith is a second-grade teacher at Lampeter Elementary School, and she has been teaching for 25 years. She has two adult children, and a third is deceased.
Ladies Night Out is dedicated to providing programs and crafts for area women in a casual, friendly atmosphere. The programs are free, and donations are accepted to fund future events.
All area women are welcome. Reservations are encouraged by contacting the church office at 717-872-4571 or office@ mcchurch.net.
Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to an open house on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville.
The event will feature A Very Hungry Caterpillar Valentine’s party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 16:14, “Do everything in love.” Parents will meet teachers and learn the distinctives of the Principle Approach, a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and the method of education used at Dayspring. The station-centered event will allow visitors to see the way Dayspring teaches math, science/STEM, the Bible, reading, and more.
The preschool program is appropriate for children who turn 3 years old by Sept. 1 and lays the foundation for a Principle Approach education. This program offers an introduction to the alphabet, and students learn about a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet; this course of study culminates with Bible Character Day, complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates princi -
ples of self-government, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible stories. Daily art projects incorporate a history, science, Bible, and literature focus. Preschool students attend class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m.
The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation.
The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old or are young 6-year-olds at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon
as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program and the Really Great Reading phonics program are introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation for beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten.
The preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten classes use field studies to
bring to life what students learn in the classroom. In all programs, the seeds of scholarship are sown in every academic subject to inspire a love of learning and appreciation for God’s hand in all the children do.

Participants who complete the course and pass the multiple-choice exam with a score of 70% or higher will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certificate is good for five years.

happy. I was thinking, ‘Oh, yeah. I want to do that.’”
“It’s neat because those ladies both had an older sibling who paved the way for them,” Ranck said. “They were also very active in our Junior FFA program, which is our middle school club. They come up one time a month and are taught lessons by our current officers.”
Frey plans on getting even more active in the group. “I’m looking forward to becoming more involved with FFA over the next couple years, running for officer, getting my Greenhand Degree (the first level degree as a high school student),” she said. After the Greenhand Degree comes the Chapter Degree, Red Rose Degree, and Keystone Degree. There is also an American Degree, which must be completed three years after leaving high school.
“Less than 1% of FFA members earn (the American degree),” said Ranck. But Immel has beaten the odds before. She has been accepted to Delaware Valley University, where she will study animal science and pursue an FFA American Degree. Once afraid to speak in public, Immel now excels at it.
“FFA has really laid a foundation for her to be successful,” said Ranck.
Pennsylvania FFA hosts the state Agriculture Issues Leadership Development Event (LDE) at the PA Farm Show annually. Due to the winter weather, the competition was postponed. The Garden Spot FFA Agricultural Issues Forum Team has been preparing for the past semester to present on the topic of “The Effects of Proposition 12 on Farmers.” The team of seven consists of Rex Giberson, Sarah Firestone, Ashlynn Frey, Ava Immel, Landon Giberson, Brooke Rubincam, and Jack Ross. The chapter’s accomplishments go beyond this convention. Garden Spot FFA alumni Sydney Albright and Jaclyn Martin are state FFA officers this year, helping run the Mid-Winter Convention and handing out degrees. Garden Spot FFA president Sarah Firestone is working with the 2025 Junior Farm Show Committee, continuing to represent the chapter’s involvement in agriculture.
