Donating kindness … in cans, jars, and boxes
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Karey Gates, dean of students at Salisbury Elementary School, 422 School Lane, Gap, remembers how the school food drive held each December began four years ago. “It started when I was teaching sixth grade,” recalled Gates, who noted she was working with a group of students to organize kindness outreaches. One of the students suggested a food drive, and the idea took off.
Now called the “12 Days of Christmas Food Drive,” the effort kicks off when the students return to classes following the Thanksgiving break and continues for the next 12 school days. The collected items are delivered to The Factory Market at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, usually a few days prior to the start of the Christmas break.
This year, the results of the drive overwhelmed Kerri Burns, market and community engagement coordinator at The Factory. “It took two school bus vans to

deliver all the (donations),” shared Burns, who said that the food items weighed in at 1,674 pounds. According to Gates, that total represented just under 1,500 items.
NeurAbilities supports those with autism
BY JEFF FALK
Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how some people conduct themselves, gain knowledge, speak and listen and relate to others. It’s a disorder that we continue to learn about and one that might be more prevalent than first realized.
NeurAbilities Healthcare of Lancaster approaches autism from both clinical and behavioral perspectives. Two of the organization’s main goals are to
enhance the lives of people and families affected by the disorder and to integrate those individuals into society.
“People are often coming to us because they are struggling to support their family members,” said Adriana Neumann, NeurAbilities’ senior director for applied behavior analysis clinical services. “There’s something they’re struggling to manage. They want their child to learn, to make progress, to navigate the world. Every family is different. Every person is different. Our job

Gates noted that each year the drive is held, Burns provides an updated list of items the market needs. One item is listed for each day of the drive. This year’s
requests included Hamburger Helper, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, canned pastas, canned soups, granola bars, canned fruit, cereal, ready-to-make macaroni
and cheese, cake mixes, and hot chocolate mix.
A competition is held between the classes to see which group brings in the most items. This year, Nate Bushnell’s third-grade class brought in just under 200 items to win the top prize, which included a special Brag Tag for each student to attach to his or her backpack.
Burns said that she was surprised by the number of donations this year, noting that the amount of food topped last year’s total of 1,400 pounds. “It took a couple days to get the items on the shelves because it was significant,” she stated. “Each year, it is amazing (how much is donated).” Burns pointed out that the donations are especially useful because the items are specifically requested for the market. “It was exactly what we need,” she said.

Making Mom proud
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Garden Spot High School 2020 graduate Sabrina Dickson first headed to college, she did not know what she wanted to do with her life. After changing her major several times and considering taking a gap year, Dickson landed at Smoker Door Sales in Kinzer, where her title of experience and engagement coordinator covers a variety of duties.
“This just kind of happened through work experience,” said Dickson. “I realized all I want to do is build relationship in a career

that has an outward mindset, and this is it.”
Dickson handles both human resources and marketing for

Smoker Door, but her position also focuses on coordinating company connections with local organizations such as The Factory, where

Ellmaker Mansion

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township For the next several months, “From the Attic” will explore the properties that Gen. Marquis de Lafayette would have passed on his journey through Salisbury Township in 1825. As part of the Lafayette 200 Bicentennial celebration, a re-enactor portraying “Lafayette” will visit the area again on Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26, and will visit historic White Chimneys in Gap.

is located in what is now the Village at Gap shopping center. In the late 1700s and throughout the 1800s, the Kennedy name dominated deed records for Salisbury Township. Family connections drew James Kennedy to the Gap area in 1788 when he built the Rising Sun Tavern, which has since been demolished.
Per his father’s will in 1799, James Jr. inherited 270 acres of what has become the heart of Gap, including the Bellevue Presbyterian Church eastward to what became known as the Kennedy-Ellmaker farm.
Tax records indicate that James Jr. built a 35-by-30-foot house of two stories. When James Jr. died in 1839, his son William inherited one-half of the property and then purchased the other half inherited by sister Anna Maria. It appears that it is William who raised the beautiful mansion that can still be seen. The original small structure that sits behind the mansion is considered the original building.
Apparently, debts seemed to follow the property from then

Smoker Door Sales
Smoker Door is a sponsor in the BIG Shots fundraiser, in which Smoker employees participate, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, for which Smoker employees put together Christmas tree kits for area families. “We also host food drives and personal care item drives,” pointed out Dickson.
In her role, Dickson also works with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) and Linville Hill Christian School to arrange three to six job shadows and internships per semester. Dickson’s job involves supplying employee volunteers to move furniture in the local emergency shelter or set up chairs and tables for bingo events. “It’s a very widespread position,” Dickson noted.
The position of experience and engagement coordinator was created to help implement the core values of Smoker, which include valuing people over profits; generosity; and developing leaders. The missional
from pg 1
approach of the company includes living out core values in all aspects of work and serving the community.
“(The final core value is) ‘we make our moms proud,’” explained Dickson. “That’s kind of a catch-all for good character,” she noted, adding that owner Jeff Smoker often says, “We’re in the business of selling garage doors, but we do that as a means to give back to our community.”
Before Dickson filled the position, no one at Smoker Door was coordinating the efforts to live out the core values from a single vantage point. “They needed someone who had the time to prioritize ways for us to make an impact,” said Dickson. “To live out the vision outside of financial donations, (we needed) to put feet on the ground getting employees out there and building relationships.”
One of the outreaches Dickson enjoys most is the mentorship program she and a few other employees

take part in through PVSD. The Smoker team members meet with Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) juniors to help them prepare for interviews and provide career advice. Out of that involvement grew the idea of granting an annual scholarship to a PVHS senior. In 2024, the first Smoker Door Sales Character Scholarships were given to Mariah Kauffman and Kylee Worrell. “Because we pride ourselves on core values and character, I thought there should be a scholarship that was character based,” explained Dickson, who also wanted the scholarship to be of the same dollar amount as many academically based awards. Applicants were asked to

answer questions such as “How have you been generous?” and “How have you developed leaders and valued people over yourself?” “We had so many great stories to choose from we gave out two ($1,000 scholarships),” explained Dickson, who noted that the funds awarded may be used at any institution of higher learning. “(The scholarship was) given to two people who have shown exemplary leadership qualities, have gone above and beyond to help others, and taken the initiative to lead and inspire,” Dickson added.
While much of the community outreach initiated by Smoker Door Sales is done in the local area, Dickson said that the team does not restrict giving to Pequea Valley. “I send people to Water Street (Mission) to volunteer in the food
outreach center.”
Internally, Dickson and a co-worker partner to organize a leadership development program with employees. “We read books on leadership and have discussions,” she noted.
Dickson is excited to continue finding creative ways to fulfill Smoker’s mission. “Our culture is not just a policy or program but a way of life that influences everything we do,” she stated. “It’s so cool.” She finds the job fulfilling as well as exciting. According to Dickson, her favorite part of the job is coordinating community outreach. “That is so rewarding to me,” she stated. “That is a blessing. It’s the Lord (at work).”

is not to change individuals. Our job is to remove barriers and help them manage.”
Established in Lancaster in 2022, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a relative newcomer to the local autism treatment scene. NeurAbilities Healthcare, which is located at 1858 Charter Lane, Suite 201, Lancaster, serves its clients through a community-based approach and on a one-on-one basis.
“We want to provide services with excellence,” said Neumann. “Ultimately, we support largely the autism community, people with an ASD diagnosis. You have a lot of individuals who are experiencing different challenges. We like to focus on abilities. We’re supporting patients. We’re supporting learners. We try to capitalize on people’s strengths and focus on what they can do to overcome those challenges. We like to see every individual for who they are.”

The Lancaster office of NeurAbilities Healthcare is set up to be a colorful, warm, inviting space filled with toys and pictures that learners can relate to. More than 10 staff members operate the office, including three certified clinicians.
“In Lancaster, or anywhere you go, there are people who don’t know what autism is,” said Neumann. “The field itself is growing, and there’s always a need for autism services. As we’re working to grow the Lancaster clinic, we want to enhance community engagement. There will be a push in the community to know what autism is and what NeurAbilities does. Hopefully, we’ll be able to improve awareness around that.”
Currently, NeurAbilities Healthcare is serving about 15 local learners, mostly children under the age of 9 from Lancaster County. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 36 kids in the United States has ASD.
“We provide community-based services,” said Neumann. “We look at what individuals need. We do services in our clinic, in homes and in schools. It’s anybody with challenges impacting their abilities to function. Those are the people who are coming to us for our services.”
Backed by a private equity firm, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a self-sufficient private practice. Some of

the services provided by NeurAbilities Healthcare are covered by Medicaid or health insurance.
“We have individuals who come in who have certain skill deficits in communication, in patterns of behavior, in social interaction,” said Neumann. “We also support individuals who engage in challenging behaviors. When someone is engaging in a behavior, there’s a reason for that. We want to be able to teach a different skill. We’re focused on anything that supports independence.”
“There are other agencies that provide similar community-based skills,” Neumann added. “Some agencies don’t have clinics - they go into
schools and homes - and some only have clinics. But it seems to me that there’s always a need.”
NeurAbilities Healthcare operates a total of three diagnostic centers and 14 applied behavior analysis clinics in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
“We’ve got improved insight into what autism is, and we have more doctors who understand what it is,” said Neumann. “There are more diagnoses. The question we are asking is, ‘What is causing this?’ There has been research into it, but there’s not a hard answer.”

on. When William died, his wife could not afford the upkeep of the farm, and it was sold to Nathaniel Ellmaker Jr. in 1852. Nathaniel served as a Pennsylvania legislator and entertained lavishly at the mansion before enlisting in the Union Army. Upon returning home, he rented out the farm, preferring to reside in Lancaster until his death in 1894. Debt followed debt, and by 1909 the Ellmaker property came into William and Samuel M. Slaymaker’s ownership.
Through rather convoluted circumstances, from 1942 the property was in and out of ownership for the next 50 years until Lowe Associates purchased the entire farm and built the Village at Gap shopping center. The barn was demolished, but included in the permits was the stipulation that the new owners “try to seek an adaptive use” for the old mansion. However, it stood vacant for several years, suffering severe damage from vandalism and fire until the Salisbury Township called upon the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster in hopes of saving the treasure before it had to be razed due its hazardous condition.
Fortunately, the Auntie Anne’s

corporation, led by Salisbury Township citizens Omar and Anne Beiler, stepped in and, with the help of the Historic Preservation Trust, the building eventually resumed its grand appearance, with its stone exterior exposed to view and the white Tuscan columns gracing the front portico.
The Beilers applied for National Registry recognition, but they were told that to achieve this aim, the home would need to be restored largely to its original appearance, including covering the exterior stone walls with white painted stucco - historically a sign of the owners’ wealth. Not wanting to cover up the stone, the Beilers did not further pursue the Registry designation.
The restored mansion served as a bed and breakfast for a while. Today it is known as the Ellmaker Center, home to Cornerstone Reproductive Health. Employees
