Describing the annual Fall Fest at St. John’s Herr Estate, Carolyn Livingston said it offers something for everyone. “This is an event this community looks forward to,” she stated. This year’s Fall Fest will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be set up inside the chapel, rotunda and recreation room.

“You’ll find a little bit of everything for sale, and it’s a very friendly atmosphere. It’s a fun, laid-back event.” Proceeds from the Fall Fest benefit the Residents’ Council and are used in-house for events such as a New Year’s Eve celebration, to fund staff Christmas presents and to bolster the retirement community’s benevolent fund. Proceeds are also given to various local nonprofits, including Hands Across the Street and Luthercare Kids. Perrone noted that the Fall Fest is a tradition at St. John’s. “It’s always the third Saturday in September,” she said. “We have people who come from all over the county and into York County. You’ll find a little bit of everything for sale, and it’s a very friendly atmosphere. It’s a fun, laid-back event.” Along with the Fall Fest, the Residents’ Council will host a drive-through chicken barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the community. Meals will include a half-chicken, a roll, a baked potato and applesauce. Preordered meals must be picked up by 2 p.m. Tickets are available in the office at 200 Luther Lane. Preorders are not required but are suggested.

“There will be hot dogs, sloppy joes and chicken corn soup. Everyone loves the soup,” Perrone remarked. “We’ll have a huge variety of baked goods made by the residents. They do everything from fudge to brownies, breads, cookies and muffins.”

“It’s a big yard sale,” said Anita Perrone, president of the Residents’ Council at St. John’s. “There’s also a lot of food for sale.” Yard sale items are donated by residents and their families and include gently used books, puzzles, household goods, jewelry and crafts. “We have a lot of seasonal items and lots of Christmas items,” Livingston stated. “Everything is very reasonably priced.” Food options are prepared both by the kitchen staff as well as residents.

If you’ve ever asked questions like these, the answers are now right at your fingertips. Columbia Borough has launched TextMyGov, a mobile phone program that connects residents with their local municipality.“Peoplejust send a text to get started, and then they can enter keywords to find information, or ask specific questions, which will be directed to the right person to answer,” explained Chris Vera, manager of the Columbia Market House. “There’s no app to download - it’s all done through texting.”

York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is in the process of planning to ensure the continued safe, responsible disposal of the county’s waste. As part of YCSWA’s regular operations, staff members constantly evaluate the waste disposal system’s current and future capacity, which includes considering reusing the York County Sanitary Landfill (YCSL). As the area’s population continues to grow, it is YCSWA’s responsibility to ensure that current and future York County residents can responsibly and affordably dispose of their municipal solid waste. YCSWA regularly considers long-term landfill capacity in the county, including exploring the possibility for smart YCSL reuse. Future site development would be done in collaboration with theResidentscommunity.with questions can email YCSWA at sitereuse@ycswa.com. Through TextMyGov, residents will be able to quickly find links, documents or text that answer their questions. “Maybe you want to tell a road crew that a tree is down, or you want to see the minutes of a recent public meeting,” Vera said. “You can access all of that through this program. It’s great because you can notice a problem, report it, and whoever is responsible for that particular issue will be alerted on their phone and they can respond immediately and get it taken care of right away.” The program eliminates the need to wait until an office is open, take a trip in to meet with someone or spend time on hold after calling for answers, heVerasaid. noted that borough manager Mark Stivers was instrumental in bringing TextMyGov, which is a nationwide program, to Columbia. “He thought it was a great way to get things out to the public and better connect with the people of Columbia,” Vera remarked. He added that all comments, reports and questions through TextMyGov are anonymous.Verasaid he envisions the program being another way to serve the people of Columbia. “I believe it’s important for the government and the citizens to unite to better understand what’s happening in the borough,” he noted. “This is a way for people to get their questions answered and have their voices heard. A lot of times, people aren’t sure who to contact or where to go for information. This makes it easy, because it’s all in one place. Highlighting historical moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, the program includes a look at the history behind over 30 well-known hymns, many of which were written as a result of tragic and trying circumstances. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “This Ole’ House,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The program also features hymn sing-alongs. The concert’s purpose is not just to entertain audiences, but also to educate them on hymns and their histories, share the Gospel message, and honor the memory of Graham, whose life mission was to let people know that God loves them. “Then Sings My Soul” was written by Kat Prickett, who grew up watching Graham’s crusades on television and listening to George Beverly Shea on cassette tape. She began creating “Then Sings My Soul” after Graham passed away in February 2018, and she initially presented one day of performances in a barn at her family’s business, The Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg, later that year. “Then Sings My Soul” has now been performed to audiences across Pennsylvania and New Jersey and at Dollywood Theme Park and the DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. A portion of all proceeds every year is donated to The Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C., in memory of Graham. A freewill offering will be received at Wrightsville Hope UMC, and a light luncheon will follow the event. For more information, www.thensingsmysoulpa.com.visit

“I was first introduced to the ministry 12 years ago, and I felt like my calling was secured,” James said. “We attend motorcycle rallies and events. Our mission is to serve the culture and be a vessel for Christ, and I’ve seen so many lives changed through the ministry for the better.” As the tri-state chapter elder, James communicates with his chapter on a weekly basis and organizes events such as the dinner ride. “Anyone is invited to join the ride. It doesn’t matter what you ride; it’s that you ride,” added James. Bikers For Christ was founded in California over 30 years ago to provide a Christian ministry for motorcyclists. The group has grown in size and ambition over the years, now including thousands of members across several chapters. It is considered one of the largest motorcycle ministries in the world. Bikers For Christ sponsors events to raise money for underprivileged communities, those with disabilities and veterans. For more information on Bikers For Christ and the tristate chapter, search for “BFC Tri-State Chapter” on Facebook.

The dinner rides are held each Wednesday night and are open to anyone interested in attending.

The Appell Center for the Performing Arts and Creative Generation announced their new collaboration to produce an actionable plan to create a community hub for arts and cultural education in York County. Together, the organizations have devised a responsive and community-engaged participatory research and evaluation process, which involves numerous pathways for involvement of the myriad stakeholders of the Appell Center. Over six months, the teams will engage these stakeholders to imagine and forecast the futures of education and community engagement work of the Appell Center for the Performing Arts to inform future organizational planning and strategy. This work will also seek to amplify the voices of York County artists, educators, parents, youths, and organizations to inform broader dialogues about the role of the arts in education and collaborations between cultural and educationCreativesystems.Generation was founded in April 2019 as a research initiative and has grown its work throughout the United States and around the world. Through projects in the arts and culture, education, and social change fields - and the support of arts and cultural educators in their work to cultivate the creative capabilities of young people - the organization regularly supports organizations driving systemic change in their communities. James Emig of Wrightsville has been riding motorcycles since he was 16 years old. Emig, callsign “Uncle Jimmy,” began hosting Wednesday night dinner rides in April of this year to create an environment for riders to make connections with each other. Each Wednesday night at 6 p.m., Emig and his wife, Mindi, meet at the Rutter’s in Mountville, with an open invitation to anyone who wishes to join them. The group rides for 45 minutes to a destination where participants share dinner together. “My wife and I were thinking about how we’re strong believers in creating good surroundings,” said Emig. “Some people like to do it to have a date night once a week and others to be surrounded by friends or just to have a regular faith-based outing. The response we’ve received has been awesome and it’s become important to a lot of people.” James and Mindi are members of Victory Church in Lancaster and were inspired by the monthly meeting of the Victory Riders, but wanted to host something more frequent. The dinner rides average eight to 15 riders each week, and the Emigs plan to continue the tradition nextTheyear.ride is affiliated with Bikers For Christ, a motorcycle ministry that James joined seven years ago and that Mindi joined three years later. James now serves as the elder for the tri-state chapter, which covers eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and New Jersey. The organization focuses on Christian ministry through motorcycle riding and events and has chapters in every state as well as 21 other countries.

Do you remember where you were when Hurricane Agnes came to town? If you do, you’re invited to share those memories at “This Place Matters: Marietta 50 Years After Hurricane Agnes (1972),” a Town Talk that will be presented at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25. The talk will be held in Studio 264, behind the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. This Place Matters is a nationwide campaign launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation designed to bring attention to communities such as Marietta, which is listed as a National Historic District. As part of the campaign, Marietta residents are encouraged to share photos of themselves and their favorite places in town on social media using the hashtag #ThisPlaceMatters. The Town Talk will be led by Elizabethtown College senior Eric Schubert and history professor Jean-Paul Benowitz, who will discuss their Summer Creative Arts and Research Program project launching a This Place Matters campaign in Marietta. “Professor Benowitz and I hope that an appreciation for the resiliency of the community of Marietta and an understanding of the context of why Marietta has been a nationally recognized leader in historic preservation and economic development will be highlighted,” Schubert noted, adding that the presentation is also meant to bring attention to Marietta’s Heritage Plan, which was created by the borough to focus on the town’s history. “(We hope) to inspire residents of Marietta to work together to identify, conserve and preserve Marietta’s heritage resources as a basis for retaining and enhancing strong community character and a sense of place.” Schubert said the talk will highlight Marietta in the context of Hurricane Agnes and its aftermath. “The audience will be invited to share their memories of Hurricane Agnes,” he explained. “We’re looking particularly for stories illustrating the local community’s commitment to historic preservation and economic development.” He noted that the presentation and discussion will be recorded and broadcast simultaneously for remote viewers and also as a way to preserve audience comments for future use. “We are planning on hosting future events where people will be filmed telling their stories as part of a larger oral history project,” he remarked. The 50th anniversary of the hurricane marked a good focal point for Marietta’s This Place Matters campaign, Schubert said, and he encourages people to come to the presentation to discover more about Marietta’s heritage and share their own recollections. “Come and learn about why this place matters, why Marietta is important, how Marietta continues to lead in the areas of historic preservation and economic development,” he stated. “Come share your stories about why this place matters.” For more information on the Town Talk, visit communityhouse.org.https://marietta

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited.Theevent will include a Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society educational and historical display, as well as a vintage Ford truck in the Pennsylvania Railroad livery from Ken Briers. At 11 a.m., Marino J. “Joe” Acri III will present on the Pennsylvania Railroad G5’s locomotive and backup service with commuter trains. Retired CSX engineer Dominic “DJ” Arlia will speak at 1 p.m. about his experiences working for the railroad, his model railroading hobby, being a licensed drone pilot, and his YouTube videos. In addition, Frank Crowe will create and exhibit works at the museum on Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Crowe is one of four artists-in-residence who will be hosted at the museum in the coming months in cooperation with the American Society of Railway Artists. The other artists are Gil Bennett, Ken Muramoto, and Nadine Charlsen. Crowe began watching trains at an early age, took up drawing and painting them and, as a result, earned a scholarship to the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, Crowe worked briefly for several railroads, and today he is a senior designer for a large carpet manufacturer. His work allows him to travel, shoot railroad photography, and paint. He has photographed trains in the 48 contiguous United States and in all but one Canadian province. Bennett will visit the museum on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23. He has had a passion for trains since age 2. Classically trained, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in architecture and fine arts. A selfdescribed “rivet counter,” he makes sure his subjects are rendered as accurately as possible. Bennett’s works in oil and watercolor are collected and commissioned by individuals worldwide and may also be found on calendars, cards, and book Muramotocovers.will also be present at the museum on Oct. 22 and 23. Muramoto blends his fascination with trains with his love of art. Diagnosed with autism at age 3, he showed a gift for drawing early on, and this talent was nurtured by his parents. He has received numerous awards in community shows.

Fun and learning will go hand in hand when Chiques PreK opens at Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The private school will operate Mondays through Fridays yearround and will offer classes for children ages 3 to 5. Cindy Beyerlein, acting director, said the school is a natural fit for the church because it will further the church’s mission of community interaction. “We were looking for opportunities to expand into the community,” she stated. “We wanted to increase our outreach and find new ways to connect with thePlanscommunity.”began for the preschool in January, and Emmy Brenner was hired as the lead teacher. She’ll be joined in the classroom by assistant teacher Kathleen Geigley, along with church volunteers. Beyerlein noted that the teacher-to-student ratio will be 1 to 10. Brenner brings with her more than 15 years of experience as a preschool teacher, including working at Head Start. She describes the Chiques PreK curriculum as academic-focused, with an emphasis on creativity. “We’ll have circle time with songs, stories and Spanish immersion. We’ll have lots of opportunities for students to burn off their excess energy with gross motor play both inside and outside. We’ll also be incorporating rest time into the day,” Brenner remarked, noting that students will bring their own lunches. Daily lessons in reading, math and science will be offered, along with smallgroup instruction and opportunities for tactile activities, imaginative play and more at various learning centers. There will also be a focus on social-emotional development of students, Brenner said. Students will also take field trips and will be treated to guest speakers and readers from the community. “I’m hoping to bring in someone from the police department as well as other community groups,” Brenner noted. Beyerlein added that the students will also be treated to intergenerational learning opportunities, when members of a group at the church called The Elderberries will visit the classroom. “We’ll be working on integrating them into the school as storytellers or to do crafts with the children,” she explained.Brenner emphasized that an academic-focused preschool program is an essential first step for students. “Pre-K gives students a better foundation for kindergarten readiness,” she stated. “It’s setting the child up for success.” School staff are working with area school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Columbia, Manheim Central and Elizabethtown, to make sure the preschool curriculum complements what the public schools are offering. Space is limited in the preschool to 20 students initially, although Beyerlein noted that there is room to expand to up to 60 students down the road. She anticipates lots of interest in the program. “The quality of this program is what sets it apart,” she said. “We are so blessed to have Emmy. We think this is going to be one of the most contagious, fun learning experiences around.” For more information on Chiques PreK, call Beyerlein at 717-682-3148.

“This is our club’s biggest car show of the year,” said Lancaster County Corvette Club member Mary Anne Lewandowski, describing the American Legends People’s Choice Fun Show. The show, presented by the club and W hitmoyer Auto Group, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., and the show will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with awards presented at approximately 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. The car show is open to any General Motors (GM) vehicle as well as any GM-powered vehicle. Those could include cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, hot rods, antiques, classic cars and more, said Scott Lewandowski, who is cochairing the event with Mary Anne, his wife. In addition to vehicles, the show will feature tickets for giveaway baskets, a silent auction and a cash prize drawing. A food truck and an ice cream truck will be on-site as well, and a DJ will provide music. Proceeds from the car show will benefit Clare House of Lancaster. The organization provides transitional housing to mothers and children facingScotthomelessness.andMary Anne, who describe themselves as “car nuts,” own several cars. College sweethearts, they bonded over Scott’s 1968 Camaro, and for their 25th wedding anniversary, they specialordered a Camaro and drove it across Route 66. They noted that there’s something special about Corvette culture. “A Corvette is just the cream of American-built vehicles,” Scott said. “When you drive or ride in one, it’s a different experience than any other car. When you pass another Corvette driver on the road, you wave to eachScottother.”and Mary Anne emphasized that the American Legends car show is a fun day for everyone - participants and spectators alike. “It’s not a judged show,” Mary Anne said. “The awards are people’s choice, so every person who enters a car gets to vote.” She added that many of the car owners bring lawn chairs and sit by their cars.

“People love to talk about their cars, and they encourage people to ask questions,” she stated.Last year’s show drew about 140 cars, more than 100 of which were Corvettes. Some vehicles dated back to the 1940s. “We really embrace those,” Scott said. “ We love it when people say, ‘Oh, my dad had a car like this.’ Or they say, ‘I had a Corvette, but I sold it when I had kids.’ We love to hear peopleScottreminisce.”andMary Anne noted that the car show wouldn’t be possible without the support of the 100-plus-member Lancaster County Corvette Club. “ We are so grateful for our club members who volunteer to help with this event,” Mary Anne said. “We couldn’t do it withoutPreregistrationthem.” for the car show is available for a discount before Saturday, Sept. 17. Dayof-show registration is also available. The first 200 registered people will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt. For more information or to register, email lccclegends@gmail.com or visit www.lcccpa.com.

Charlsen will visit the museum on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. She is an urban landscape watercolor artist with a flair for trains and industrial sites. From her extensive background as a theatrical lighting designer, she incorporates light, shadows, scale, colors, and textures into her work. While Charlsen paints all things related to the railroad industry, she said she particularly enjoys the challenge that capturing steam engines presents, as their workings are exposed and need to be portrayed accurately. The American Society of Railway Artists, formed in 2013, encourages the depiction of railroading past and present through art. The society counts both noted and emerging railroad artists among its members and presents a variety of opportunities annually for those who love art and railroading to comeAdditionally, together.

The Country Gardeners of Eastern Lancaster County will sponsor a fall garden tour, themed “Fall in Love With Gardening,” on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will feature seven local properties with ideas for gardening in the third season. In addition to the season’s typical sunflowers, the gardens include a variety of less-used perennials and annuals planted in unique combinations to create a new look. In one garden, tropical plants are featured at their best from a full summer’s growth, and another takes a fruit tree to a new level. One garden has a catio built for a cat rescue person’s passion. For more information, call 717-768-7676. Discounted tickets may be purchased in advance at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
