You’re invited to the Fight Hunger Fall Fest
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Attend the Fight Hunger Fall Fest, and you can enjoy a day of family fun while learning more about a serious need in the community.
“Fight Hunger Fall Fest is about raising awareness about food insecurity in our area,” said Jesse North, who is organizing the event with Alicia Ferrari and Sara Barrett. “In York County, one in 13 adults is food insecure and one in 10 children is food insecure. One in three kids qualifies for a free or reduced-price lunch at school. Hunger and food insecurity can affect child development, health and academic
achievement and future economic prosperity.”
The Fight Hunger Fall Fest will be held at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, 205 N. Second St.,

Wrightsville, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. Admission is free, but donations of nonperishable food and hygiene items will be collected for the Eastern York
Food Pantry and The Giving Table.
“This is a family-friendly event and a way to come together and have fun for a great cause,” noted North, who is the pastor of Wrightsville Presbyterian Church.
“We will have food trucks, crafts, games, a bounce house, a face painter, a live band as well as a free meal for each attendee.”
Last year was the first time the event was held, and it was very successful, he said. “We raised $1,000 in cash donations for local organizations dedicated to fighting hunger. In-kind donations included 500 nonperishable food items as well as 24 complete hygiene kits, and folks had an amazing time,” North shared. “We

“It’s time to socialize, have lunch and do some shopping for others or pamper yourself,” said Julie Bigler.
Hilary Smith, who is co-chair of the bazaar committee with
Denise Bollinger, agreed, adding, “The bazaar has lots of homemade baked goods and delicious homemade soups available for eat-in or takeout. There’s a nice variety of homemade and new gifts to purchase.”
For Bollinger, the bazaar provides an opportunity to browse unique gifts, patronize vendors and get started on Christmas shopping. “There

The motto of the Columbia Lions Club is “We Serve,” and the group will put that mission into practice with the annual Christmas Food Box Delivery. Working with members of the Sunsnappers, the club will deliver items to people in need in the greater Columbia area on Sunday, Dec. 22.
“The food box project exists in town to help families that may be in need,” explained Josh Birk, Lions Club member, encouraging
anyone in need to sign up for a box. “There is no judgment or anything. The project is there to support the people in town. It’s also a very hearty meal.”
Each family that registers will receive all the fixings for a traditional Christmas dinner as well as additional food items, including turkey, mashed potatoes, butter, milk, eggs, cereal, fruit and vegetables. The project is supported by donations from local businesses and individuals. Families in Columbia and the surrounding areas with

Registration now open for Santa Run and Walk 5K
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim Square at 8:30 a.m.
“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the square all morning until the start of the race.
The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”
The course is relatively flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. “We have a range of participants from (ages) 6 to 76,” Husser said. “We will have bananas, water and chocolate milk for all finishers. Plus, this year we will have cash prizes for the top three overall male and female runners as well as medals for various age groups.”
The first Santa Run began nine years ago, coordinated by Reenie Ober, who at that time was the executive director of the Manheim Downtown Development Group. “She organized the first Santa 5K, and then the Manheim Lions Club has been

sponsoring it every year since then,” Husser said.
Whether people are participating or attending as spectators, the Santa Run will offer an entertaining experience, she said. “It is just a lot of fun to do something on a December morning and then to visit all the shops in town, have breakfast and just enjoy Manheim in general,” Husser shared. “It is just a fun community event in Manheim, and it just gets you into the Christmas spirit. Just come out and feel the Christmas spirit.”
The cost of registration for the race will increase after Friday, Nov. 1. People age 15 and older who register before Friday, Nov. 15, may receive a Santa suit or a quarter-zip pullover, and youths age 14 and younger may receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat if registration is received before that date.
Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, located at 48 Market Square, but will

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies
Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.
Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate custom-
ers age 18 and up without a prescription
If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores .com/pages/tgc-vaccines or www.martinsfoods .com/pages/tgc-vaccines.
Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site.
In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.
Fall Fest
also garnered more community interest. This year we have been approached by more local businesses and organizations that want to be involved. Local businesses have offered to help raise funds, and organizations like the Girl Scouts have already done community outreach to encourage in-kind food donations ahead of the event. We look forward to watching this effort grow and develop every year.”
Second Street will be blocked off from Walnut to Locust streets for outdoor activities, including music and food trucks, such as Joe’s Fish Sandwiches, The Roaming Roast, Halo’s Eatery and Get Creamed Soft Serve.
“Inside, we’ll have free hot dogs donated by John Wright Restaurant, chips from Martin’s Potato Chips and vegetarian chili from Becky’s Kitchen,” North said, adding that restrooms will also be available inside.
fulfill the group’s purpose.
“Wrightsville for All serves as a community advocacy and engagement platform, and we encourage residents to connect with each other on issues that impact our neighbors,” Ferrari stated. “This event specifically focuses on food insecurity affecting children and families in Eastern York and provides a free meal to every attendee. There are no overhead costs absorbed from the donations collected100% of any financial or in-kind donation goes directly to feeding families in Wrightsville and Eastern York.”
ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575 and 17538 are eligible to receive a food box.
The food box project began with the Columbia Jaycees in 1982. From one box that inaugural year, the project has expanded to provide food for 600 families.
The initiative is truly a community effort, Birk said. “Not only does the project feed 600 families in town, but it also brings the community together,” he remarked. “So many families in town line up to deliver boxes to the people in need. It is truly a community project.”

The Fight Hunger Fall Fest is truly a community effort, North said. “Wrightsville Presbyterian Church believes we should follow the model of Jesus Christ in feeding hungry folks; partnering with like-minded folks like Wrightsville for All, Eastern York Food Pantry and The Giving Table; and telling the whole community to join in the effort,” he shared.
For Ferrari and Barrett, founders of Wrightsville for All, the event offers a perfect opportunity to
It’s easy to make a difference in the community, North said, noting that donations will also be accepted at RE/MAX Pinnacle: The Bridge Team, 424 Locust St., Wrightsville, and a local Girl Scout troop will distribute flyers about a food drive to Wrightsville residents.
He hopes, however, that as many people as possible will come to the fest. “In a time when so much of the vibe is about what divides us, come be part of a community of people uniting to help each other and enjoy wholesome fun outdoors,” he said. “There is lots of negative energy out there, but seriously, who is against feeding hungry people? Who is against fun?”

Fulton Bank receives Freedom Award
Lancaster-based Fulton Bank was recognized as a recipient of the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members.
Fulton Bank team members who accepted the award during a ceremony held at the Pentagon on Aug. 22 were John Glover, head of commercial banking; Lisa Johanning, director of talent management; Lisa DeCoste, senior com-
mercial relationship manager; Natasha Luddington, chief legal officer; and Curt Myers, chief executive officer.
The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DOD) office, runs the annual award program, which has presented the honor to employers since 1996.
Recipients of the award include small and large private businesses and public sector employers nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization. Award

Fulton Bank
nominations are accepted from all 50 states, GuamCNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.
Fulton Bank is one of only 15 employers nationwide selected to receive the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award this year.
Pennsylvania Army National Guard Col. Brett Gagnon nominated the Fulton Bank for the Freedom Award for its support of his military career. In nominating the bank for the award, Gagnon stated that corporate executives, managers and co-workers all sent cards, letters and other items to him and unit members during his most recent deployment.
Bank personnel also maintained contact with his family, providing gift cards and support to his wife and children.
Fulton Bank also provides benefits to Guard and Reserve members. Deployed service members receive 52 weeks of differential pay while maintaining family health, retirement and investment benefits.
The bank’s nomination was selected from the 30 nationwide finalists.
Numerous Fulton Bank supervisors have received a Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award and Above and Beyond Awards. They have also attended an ESGR Boss Lift event and awards luncheon for which they received a Pennsylvania ESGR Certificate of Support.
ESGR exists to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DOD.
