Expo To Offer Youths Venue To Show, Sell Livestock By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Old Line Youth Livestock Expo will be held on Aug. 22 to 24 to give young people, such as (from left) Madelyn Tedesco, Alex Tedesco, Waylon Kready with Mischief, Kolton Youndt with Diesel, and Kayden Youndt, an opportunity to exhibit and sell their market animals.
Like it has with so many other events, the coronavirus has disrupted fair season. For some people, that simply means fewer milkshakes consumed or carnival games enjoyed. However, for the youths who raise animals to exhibit and subsequently sell, the cancellation of fairs means a significant loss of income. “Most of the livestock had been bought before COVID. These kids have all this money wrapped up in these animals,” said cattleman Jevin Kready, who noted that because specific finish weights are required, livestock must be sold within the timeframes set at the time of purchase. The Kready family has years of experience in raising, showing, and selling livestock. As a 4-H and FFA member, Jevin began showing beef cattle in middle

in Columbia, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Manheim Central, Middletown, Lower Dauphin, Hershey, and Palmyra school districts will be eligible to participate in the Old Line Youth Livestock Expo. Market steers and dairy beef cattle will be judged on Saturday, Aug. 22; market goats and market lambs on Sunday, Aug. 23; and market hogs on Monday, Aug. 24. The event will be closed to spectators. Only exhibitors and parents or guardians will be allowed to attend. “We will be able to do social distancing because we’re just having animals,” Jevin said. “We won’t have livestock here overnight (for exhibitors to attend to).” The public is encouraged to participate in the auction of animals, however. The sale will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 24 by Hess Auction Group, 1667 Cider Press Road, Manheim. Bidder registration will begin at 5 p.m. A See Livestock Expo pg 8
REYS Welcomes New Executive Director

Local families now have an opportunity to receive support and educational services all without leaving their homes thanks to online programming being offered by the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster. Among the virtual programs being offered is a kinship support program, which is taking place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 19. The program is open to kinship caregivers - those who are raising a relative’s child. During the sessions, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who have taken on the new role of caregiver can talk about topics specific to kinship care and network with other people in similar situations. “We are doing everything virtually to break down time barriers. These families are overwhelmed because they are taking care of children they were not expecting to take care of lovingly and open-armed,” said Abby Keiser, director of Family Life Services. “We are able to provide the services; they don’t have to bring their children to a building. They can even be in pajamas.” See COBYS pg 2
When Cristina Paden applied for the executive director position at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) in Mount Joy in February, she never expected that the world would be affected by COVID-19. The pandemic not only delayed the interview process but has also impacted her list of job duties to include monitoring state-mandated guidelines about building operations and programming restrictions. Normally, REYS provides free after-school, evening, summer and music programs for children and teenagers at its youth center, located at 105 Fairview St. in Mount Joy. Since the pandemic, REYS’ programming, including Bible study, gettogethers and instruction, has been offered virtually through Instagram, Zoom and the REYS Facebook page and website. “Right now, we have limited programming. We are doing some things online with the students and offering several events outdoors where they are practicing social distancing. We don’t have indoor programming,” Paden reported. “I am reading Department of Education guidelines to figure
out what we are going to do and how to proceed.” Prior to joining the REYS team, Paden served as a campus minister at Alvernia University, where she organized and directed domestic and international short-term mission and See REYS Director pg 4

school, occasionally raising some pigs as well, and he has been in charge of the livestock show at the Manheim Farm Show for a number of years. Jevin’s wife, Courtney, currently shows animals at local fairs, and their oldest child, Waylon, first entered the show ring at age 5. Waylon, who will turn 8 this month, has exhibited goats and pigs, and he wants to add a steer next year. Jevin and a friend, sheep exhibitor Adam Zurin, had joked about hosting a livestock show, but when the Elizabethtown Fair was canceled, they got serious. Jevin, Adam, and about five other people created Old Line Youth Livestock Expo, named for the road the Kreadys’ back driveway meets. The Kreadys’ farm was an ideal place to host the event as they built a barn over the winter and had not yet filled it. Following the Elizabethtown Fair exhibition guidelines, only youths living

She said that the virtual sessions enable COBYS to offer help on a broader scale, noting that anyone with a computer, phone or tablet can join in the Zoom meetings. “The pandemic has helped us understand how to be more efficient, Keiser said. “This is better for the families because of their feelings of being overwhelmed. They don’t have to feed their children dinner before (the session) or get them dressed or drive to a building and figure out parking. They can opt to get information via Zoom. A kinship seminar titled “Let’s Plan for School will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. “We will talk about what school districts are doing and how to prepare your child for that, Keiser said. “We will talk about what they do to organize their home space (for virtual learning), how to get their child ready, how to organize their schedule and have them think through everything. In addition, video sessions for children can be found at www.cobys.org under the Family Life Education tab. One program by Barb Paynter, Family Life
Education educator, features Wally and Molly, puppets that talk to children about current changes like why they must wear masks and why they have no playdates with their friends. The program is best suited for children ages 3 to 8. During the month of August, Keiser is offering free, individual online behavior consultations. To receive a free 30-minute video consultation, individuals may email education@cobys.org. “(We can) help them with specific behavior issues. For instance, if a child is having anxiety about going back to school, we can give them strategic skills to decrease their (fears), stated Keiser. “If a child is showing aggressive behavior, (we try to) change that from negative to positive through reward charts. When you are kind, you get a sticker. They are more apt to be kind to get stickers. Keiser emphasized that the program focuses on behavior management. “It is educational from a behavior management perspective. It’s not therapy, she said. To register for any of the online support groups, readers may email education@cobys.org or leave a message at 717-435-8139. “Anyone can be part of it, but they have to register because they get a Zoom invite, Keiser said, adding that callers should leave a message since COBYS staff members are working remotely. Messages are checked on a regular basis. The free sessions are funded through Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency and Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Agency.
COVID-19 Supply Kits Available Free COVID-19 kits, including personal protective equipment (PPE), are available. REYS Director from pg 1 service trips. She also served as a volunteer youth ministry director for many years at her former church. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in counseling and postgraduate education in ministry. Paden is of Dominican descent and is fluent in Spanish. She resides in Elizabethtown with her husband, Mark. She learned about the job opening at REYS on the Lancaster Bible College website. “I take graduate courses there. I was searching, and (it) came up,” Paden recalled. “I was excited at the possibility of being at a Christian organization where you can still influence young people, which is where my heart is.” In her new role, Paden has a variety of administrative responsibilities. “(I have) oversight of the staff and I work directly with the board of directors and have to manage everything from finances to building operations,” she stated. “I also have to work with external partners to make sure we are covered in terms of funding and (maintain) donor relationships.” Paden officially started at REYS on July 20, after a virtual interview in the spring and a
more recent socially distant interview in the REYS gym. “I have been able to settle in and get to the know the staff and get to ask a lot of questions,” she said. Paden and the staff members are in the midst of REYS’ annual backpack and supplies distribution. The giveaway was scheduled to begin on Aug. 10 and will continue through Friday, Aug. 14. “The backpack distribution is one of our larger programs. Students and families in the area can sign up and get a backpack for the school year filled with supplies (like) pens and pencils and notebooks,” Paden said. “The (pickup) schedule is staggered to make sure we are adhering to the (distancing) restrictions.” In past years, REYS has encouraged donors to gather supplies to fill the backpacks. However, due to current challenges, REYS asked that people donate financially this year to allow REYS staff members to place bulk orders for necessary supplies. “It is a huge relief for our low-income families,” said Paden. “(School supplies are) a big expense at the beginning of the year, so to be able to serve them that way is beautiful.” After working in a college setting, Paden is excited about her new role in serving youths. “I am passionate about connecting with young people and encouraging them to enter into a ... relationship with Jesus,” she said. To learn more about REYS, readers may call 717-6539511, email Paden at cpaden@reys.org or visit www.reys.org or www. facebook.com/RainbowsEnd YouthServices.

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-toShare, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. While visiting the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy on July 13, Paul Gardner of Buch Funeral Home in Mount Joy presented library director Barbara Basile with a check to sponsor the annual library subscription of Book Page Magazine. This donation allows Milanof-Schock Library patrons to receive complimentary copies of the monthly book review magazine when visiting the library. Buch has sponsored this library resource for more than five years. Gardner is a longtime advocate for and supporter of the library and previously served as the library’s board president.
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that.” On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia,” Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website.” As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to peruse and get comfortable with this format. Some are digitally native, but we tend to serve an older population and we want to give them time to warm up (to the process),” she said. “We will have a mailing that has step-by-step instructions.” People will be simultaneously bidding

You just say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’” The auction will close on Sept. 15. and whoever has the highest bid will win the item. “We will notify the winners on Sept. 16 if they won or lost the items,” Minardi said, noting that people will be asked to pick up their items at HCC in Lancaster. New items, quilts and sports memorabilia donations are being accepted at Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, by appointment only. Readers may call the Development Office at 717-295-3900 to schedule a drop-off appointment. All proceeds from the virtual auction and donations from corporate sponsors will benefit HCC, a nonprofit hospice provider serving patients and families at end of life since 1980. In 2019, the organization provided hospice, palliative and supportive care for nearly 7,000 patients and families. Nearly 9,000 adults, teenagers and children received grief support from the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. Currently, the center’s support programs are being held virtually. Virtual Open House Posted Baby boomers preparing for the future, caregivers considering alternatives for loved ones, and seniors who want to be aware of their living and care options are invited to take part in the 50plus Living virtual open house, which will be held online from Saturday, Aug. 15, through Monday, Aug. 31, at www.50pluslivingvirtualopenhouse.com. Participation in the virtual open house is free. Due to COVID-19 concerns, some 50-plus living campuses and agencies are not permitted to participate in live events, and some potential residents and clients are fearful of venturing out. Hosted by OLP Events, the 50plus Living virtual open house will enable interested individuals to virtually visit mature living communities and service providers online from the comfort of their home or office. Consumers considering their housing options will be able to browse the virtual open house, which showcases local housing, home care, and hospice organizations. Prospective residents and community and agency representatives from all over central Pennsylvania can log in and out of the event at will to share information and interact virtually. Throughout the 17-day online event, guests can learn about living and care options, connect with
sampling, lack of staff and product, and the inability to reach the festival site due to travel restrictions. Guests who purchased or exchanged tickets for the canceled events can request a refund or an exchange of their event tickets for a 2020 date-specific Faire reservation ticket at www.parenfaire.com/buytickets.html. The deadline for requests is Monday, Aug. 31. Mount Hope Estate & Winery, home of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, is located on Route 72, a half-mile south of Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 266.

protocols will be posted at www.parenfaire.com to help guests prepare for their visit. With capacity restrictions limiting daily attendance to a fraction of recent audiences, guests entering the front gates to this unique season will enjoy an experience similar to those of the early Faire years. Attendance will be set to the mandate to encourage social distancing and provide a safe experience for everyone. All tickets for the 2020 Faire season must be purchased in advance and will be for specific dates. No day-of gate tickets will be sold. Patrons who previously purchased 2020 Faire tickets must exchange them for the date-specific tickets through the designated box office form. The Faire will continue its dog-
